that was the scene, police fired tear gas at angry protesters gathered at city hall. several were spotted throwing molotov cocktails and rocks at police and this violent situation is far from over. joining us from downtown oakland, kraig, how does it looks right now? >> pam, i am at 14th and broadway, we had a line of police in riot gear facing off against demonstrators, that situation has eased up. some encouraging news, there group of people who are -- there is a group of people who are in disagreement with the violence that is going on. they are trying to do as much clean up as they can, but in

the middle of the night it got really bad and i want to show you, police tell us this was being thrown, things like this was being thrown at the police. this brick weighs 10 pounds. but it was not just bricks, it was roman candles molotov cocktails. >> it began -- >> reporter: it began peacefully enough, but a group of people broke off at 16th and broadway. police moved in and tried to get those people moved out and that's when the violence started. they threw those molotov cocktails, roman candles, anything they can get their hands on, police responded by deploying tear gas. they had bean bags they were shooting and they made at least 100 arrests. a spokesperson said they could

not give a number because the number keeps going up. earlier this morning, we saw is a group of demonstrators facing off and i spoke to one man, i said what is the connection between the vandalism and occupied oakland. >> the majority of people here are working class people who lost a lot, students who are mad because of school cuts budget cuts like me, that is what i am here for. >> and some of the other things that went on, the graffiti that was spray painted on a number of buildings, you have broken glass at different places throughout the night. there was one incident throughout the night. there was a person trying to leave on 14th. she tried to go around him and he went up on thehood of the car, she got frightened and got

market, they spray painted the word strike on the side of the building and shattered a large window. many of the occupied protesters stopped in to try and stop the vandals. >> think tried to break the -- i saw them trying break the windows and it's only when i saw people cleaning the windows and cleaning the graffiti that restored my faith in humanity itself. >> dozens of people splashed paint and graffiti and used a hammer to smash windows an amount tm. -- and atms. >> these are the people who are responsible for much of the violence. take a look, they were wearing black clothing, wearing masks and carrying sticks.

there was another tense scene last night. a car hit 200 protesters, angry crowds then surrounded the car and attended to people who were injured. the terrified person sat in his car while dozen screamed at him through closed windows. the driver panicked after hitting one person and backed up and hit another protester. both victims were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. both are returning to normal this morning. thousand blocked the gates including the main entrance on harbor road. they took these pictures above the march. protesters spent more than 6 hours there last night. in a statement all maritime operations are were shut down at the nation's busiest port.

the first crews found a woman outside who was suffering from smoke inhalation, she was treated. she lives where the condo originated and her smoke detector did tell her to go out. they knocked down the huge flames. >> they had already establish had itself in a make ithood, they work diligently to stop the spread in this complex. >> reporter: in the meantime the fire investigation has been called in and they will try to pinpoint a cause for this fire. although the fire does not appear to be suspicious at this point. a at it tall of nine people are affected and are being helped
