good morning to you. welcome to morning on 2. it's thursday, november 3rd. topping our news, an early morning riot on the streets of downtown oakland. there have been at least 100 arrests in a very violent and chaotic scene. police in riot gear fired teargas at hundreds of angry protestors gathered near city hall. several demonstrators were spotted throwing molotov cocktails and rocks at police and several buildings have been vandalized, following a peaceful "occupy oakland" demonstration. we have live team coverage. tara moriarity is live at the port of oakland. but we begin with kraig debro near city hall. kraig. >> reporter: good morning. downtown oakland is kind of returning to normal, but there are a lot of broken windows and graffiti down here. the night of violence was

certainly excessive, according to police, but they say it was just a minority of the people. however, some of the people in the crowds were throwing things at police, things like bricks like these and anything else they could find. the violence started where the one-day general strike 15 at 14th and broadway. while some accused of protests peacefully, others were breaking windows at wells fargo. earlier group marched past that bank without incident. workers spent the morning cleaning up the mess. it would get worse, though. police from several different agencies in riot gear faced off against what police called a minority of "occupy oakland." police say a couple hundred out of the 7,000 who marched peacefully caused the problem.

police say pro testers threw bricks and molotov cocktails. police retaliated and 100 people would be arrested. but not before one business owner estimates his damage to be $300,000. one of demonstrators says, however, the true spirit of the movement is still alive. >> you can see this now, as these occupation movements, growing people's movements of resistance. that is union members, teachers, students. >> that woman was among a few people out here this morning who took it upon themselves to scrape the graffiti off of one of buildings down here that houses tully's coffee. she and other people were doing that down the street. several people stood guard in front of a broken window to prevent looters from going in and taking things. but across the street at the rite aid a lot of work needs down done, graffiti goes down

from 14th down to at least 15th. we'll be trying to contact police to find out how many people if any were injured. i tried calling earlier to get a count but they were unavailable. we're having a briefing later this morning and will pass on the force. >> thank you, kraig. there were acts every vandalism in the downtown area several hours before the riot. protestors targeted whole foods at 27th and harrison yesterday afternoon. they spray-painted the word strike on the building, threw payment on the walls and shatter a large window. van as also targeted the bank of america. witnesses say about a dozen people spray-painted graffiti and splashed paint on that building and used a hammer to smash windows and atms. we're closely watching the port of oakland, confrontations are happening this morning. tara moriarity is at one of port entrances, where

demonstrateddors and truck drivers are facing off. >> reporter: over the past half hour, the protestors relented, pushing the barricades back so trucks can get through the intersection. the big rigs were actually lined up, blocked down the street towards the freeway. but now they are able to get through, but still not into the port. many truck drivers have gotten out of their rigs -- [audio not understandable] >> we will not negotiate. we're non-negotiable! >> reporter: heated confrontations, truckers asking the protestors to remove the barricades. protestors saying we're doing this for you, standing up against corporate god.

many say they support the idea, but they still need a paycheck. protestors say they are not giving up. >> it's more of a general sense every being fed up than it is about any specific issue. there's so many issues that have finally just reached the boiling point, and this is what happens when greed is allowed to go unchecked and here we are. >> protestors told us they're moving to end -- at the port and that should be interesting since the port has its own security down there. right now dozens of drivers are arriving at 7:00 is when they come so it's creating congestion. earlier protestors were not allowing anyone out of the port at this entrance here. but they have been letting some of these trucks come through. i see one up there, the red one, orange one on the bridge. it's backing up. but we'll stay on top of this, let you know what happens throughout the morning. protestors say they have no plans to leave until 9:00 this morning, and that would be a full 24 hours after the initial

allegedly denied or delayed requests for thousands of documents related to solyndra. coming up at 7:15, what new documents released just yesterday show the obama administration was preparing to do just days before the solyndra filed for bankruptcy. the martinez school district will holds a safety forum tonight, dealing with the reason strong of school threats. police solved the case, friday they arrested a man to sending threats to schools in pleasant hill, concord and martinez. he allegedly sent the letters using a former friend's name if an effort to hurt his reputation. today's meet something to talk about how the threats were handle. it starts at 6:30 tonight at martinez junior high school auditorium. let's head back out to sal because it's been a busy morning for him. >> it's pretty busy out there. we do have slow traffic almost everywhere you look, and i want to tension the mains in marin

county has been reopened on southbound 101 so those lanes reopened. they did some emergency repair work. they did in an hour and a half. there was a huge pothole that opened up and they determined it wasn't safe to drive over. so still pretty busy coming into novato. things are getting a little better since all the lanes are open. but it just didn't get better quickly as many of us hoped. like all the lanes on open, cool! still slow traffic. westbound backed up at bay bridge toll plaza fork about a 20-mundt delay. south bay with sew traffic on 280 and 85, slowing down at highway 17. >> thank you. lots of changes, really cold numbers in the north bay. a lot of 30s although santa rosa was 36, now they -- they were at 33, and now they're 36. more on that in just a second. we do have big change in our weather pattern today. what's going on is clouds are already starting to increase. some temperatures in the north bay are beginning to go up and

clear for a while but now ukiah reporting some clouds. but little morning sun for a while. so if you need to get out and to something, now is the time do it because by the afternoon everything will fall apart. clouds, cooler, much cooler. tonight and tomorrow the bigger part of this system. cold air not going anywhere. there will be another reason on saturday and sunday, a break early next week. but next couple days all eyes are drown to the north because first the front comes by, light rain around the noon hour. that's the cold unstable air that has to filter in. 32 novato. these are probably going up because the clouds cover is coming in. middletown 34. some of the lows this morning, woodside at 39. still 36 santa rosa, 38 napa airport. fairfield was 41, now they're 43. so these lows are going up. san rafael was 44, now they're 47. still a lot of 40s around, very

low 50s. and you can see some of that rain turns to snow, higher elevations. so this is a very cold system that has to come by. there's not a lot with that part of the system. but right up there, this cold unstable air has to filter in and that's what will give us the patterns today that drops our temperatures. good 10, 15 degrees compared to yesterday's highs and the rain and wind will develop later on. snow level coming down. snow advisory for the mountains this afternoon into friday morning. snow levels start high, then take a big plunge by tomorrow around 3,000 feet tomorrow. 50s and 60s. say good-bye to 70s for a while. if anything, tomorrow will be colder. now we'll get a break late friday, we'll see increasing clouds late saturday, saturday is okay, then saturday night early sunday morning more clouds and rain. it will clear out late sunday. monday looks dry. >> all right. time is 7:11. president obama is in france this morning as uncertainty lingers over greece's bailout deal. what the administration is saying about europe's debt crisis and why the u.s. won't

i ride muni every day. i enjoy it the most when i'm with sidney. she doesn't notice that it's too crowded or that it can run a half hour late. i'm bevan dufty, and i'm running for mayor because it's not enough to just "get it done"-- we have to get it done better. sidney thinks muni is magic. we go underground and come out someplace new-- just us. i want all of us to see it that way.

good morning. beautiful sunrise, although big changes coming. but today we have some morning sun, then clouds will increase here late morning, early afternoon. that will lead to rain and much colder temperatures by tonight. temperatures today 50s and 60s. the congressional investigation into fremont based solyndra is expanding. there may be subpoenas of the white house. ktvu's allison burns standing by live in our washington, d.c. bureau with the details.

allison. >> reporter: that's right. this is new this hour, republicans are aggressively trying to make the case that the white house has failed to cooperate in the investigation of the solyndra loan debacle. let's get to a live look at the hearing room, house investigation committee is -- will vote any minute now on whether use officials for infor about solyndra's half billion dollar federal loan guarantee. >> we have a right to know who was involved and what decisions were made and why p at this point in time i'm not confident that we will have a good faith response from the white house without issuing a subpoena. >> democrats are accusing republicans of abusing their subpoena power for the sole purpose of trying to embarrass president obama. >> the process of this committee so far has showed a great inclination towards haphazard behavior and shows a lack of respect for the

president. >> the white house says it's released about 80,000 pages of documents relating to the solyndra deal. e-mails released in just the last 24 hours show the white house was considering a bailout of solyndra, including more money, just days before the company's collapse. but the idea was ultimately rejected. i'll have more live coverage of the morning's subpoena vote during my next update in about an hour. allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, allison. testimony time is 7:16. president obama is now meeting with other world leaders at the g-20 summit in southern france. he is meeting and greeting other world leaders. president obama talked about the main focus of the summit. >> the most important aspect of our task over the next two days is to resolve the financial crisis here in europe. >> the white house says the u.s. will not contribute any money to help europe out of its

financial crisis because it is europe's problem to solve. today the occupy san francisco protestors are taking part in a march in downtown san francisco. they're calling for a financial transaction tax that would be a sales tax on trades of stocks, bonds and other financial transactions. the march is scheduled for 11 a.m. and will end at 1 p.m. it starts at 101 market street. nurses and organizers are also joining the march. right now in greece, an emergency government meet something underway there. several lawmakers called for the resignation of the prime minister because he decided to allow the people of greece to vote on a european bailout plan. the lawmakers want to let a coalition government approve the bailout plan without holing a risky referendum on it. the people of greece have been staging protests against the kind of austerity measures called for in the bailout plan. there are worries the greek people will vote no in the

referendum, and that would prevent grosse from getting them funds it needs to avoid bankruptcy. back in this country, the u.s. senate is poised to block yet another plan for economic stimulus spending by president obama. this time his dollars 60 billion plan for infrastructure jobs is expected to fall victim to a filibuster by the republicans. the president made his case for the measure yesterday and is pressuring republicans to support him. but they're opposing the plan because they say it includes a tax surcharge on income that exceeds $1 million. the number of americans living in poverty is at a record high. the brock, institution review of cencus poverty data shows the impoverished population grew to $46.2 million in the last 10 years. it shows only 5 tracks in the bay area show extreme poverty. overall, about 12,000 people are living in such conditions down from about 9200 in the year 2000. this morning herman cain is

battling a new accusation of sexual harassment. the ap is reporting another woman who worked with cain at the restaurant association says he made sexually suggestive remarks and gestures towards her. she did not file a complaint at the time. republicans campaign calls the charge baseless. cain says it shows his campaign is entering a new stage of success. >> the third phase they tried to destroy you. well, got a little of that this week. [laughter] >> the cain campaign is accusing a former staffer now working for rick perry of leaking information about two sexual harassment settlements to reporters. perry's campaign denies any involvement. a cartoon of the prophet mohammed may be blamed for a fire that destroyed the offices of a french magazine. police in france haven't said yet if this fire was arson.

however, the editor he is the fire occurred just after they published an issue that made fun of islamic law. he says he found a molotov cocktail among the ruins of his office. >> it's an indescribable mess. and everything has meld, and the keyboards, the computers, everything is dead. ashes cover all of our belongings. >> the cartoon featured a figure that reportedly looked like mohammed and saying, 100 lashes if you don't die of laughter. the cartoonist says he didn't mean for offensive, and the magazine says it will quickly bounce back. time is 7:20. and they were joined together but now they are apart. the small step doctors are taking to help the twins adjust to their new life. plus, tiger woods finished 30th last month in the golf tournament in the south bay. why he is -- believes he's on. right road back.

we have new details about the progress of the formally conjoined twins recovering from an operation two days ago to separate them. their doctor at children's hospital told ktvu news that angelina is progressing quicker than angeliquea. they are from san jose and are in separate beds. but they are in the same room so they can see each other when they're awake. tiger woods says get ready for him, he says he is healthy now and at the practice range often and believes he's going to get back to his championship form. the tiger played in the open in santa clara county last month. now he is due to play in australia next week. anded he's battled marital problems and injuries over the past two years but believes he

is getting better. it began as a largely protest, now it is causing problems at port of oakland. it's also causing problems elsewhere. sal is keeping an eye on that that and the roads for us. >> good morning. yes, we have a big problem now in san francisco. it's affecting a lot of people, southbound 101 at candlestick. this crash is blocking lanes, two lanes at least. look off camera here at 101 san francisco, so far it has not affected that commute. also this drive, if are you driving -- move it out to contra costa county, highway 4, antioch slow but it's typical here, concord to walnut creek. and then traffic in hayward is slow approaching a street -- or tennyson road, there's a crash. he's let's go to live pictures, bay bridge backed up for a 20- meant clay. and san jose not to be outdone, stop and go traffic through

downtown. cold out there this morning. lots of 30s and 40s, and it's going to get colder, especially on the high temperatures later today. systems getting closer, higher clouds moving northwest bay. they were clear for a while but that's not the case here. there will be some morning sun but it's not going to last too long. but for a couple hours especially towards peninsula, east bay, south bay, but north bay will cloud up had and here comes that system, temperatures going up a little bit. and because of cloud cover but they were really cold for a while down towards 31, 32 for a while near santa rosa. starting to head up. 40s and 50s, big change in the pattern from that east- northeast wind now, getting a southerly brose and the first system that comes by going through is northern mendocino county won't do much but it's what behind that cold system, off oregon, is driving towards us. so much cooler today. we'll get morning sun but then clouds roll in. could be light rain in the north bay in the afternoon or late morning, but more likely tonight. 50s and 60s on the temps today,

vandalized. we'll bring you a live report on all of this from downtown oakland, coming up at 8:00. in the meantime, tensions are heating up at the port of oakland this morning. demonstrators have been blocking big rigs all morning long. ktvu's tara moriarity is there at one of port entrances. tell us about the confrontations, tara. >> reporter: you know, the big rig horns basically say it all. either you're hearing this beep beep and a waver and cheering, or it's a long, drown-out honk, truck drivers annoyed by these protestors. if you look behind me, you can see where they've set up on third and adeline. they're not blocking the intersection like they were before, but truck drivers are still not being allowed into the port through this entrance. >> you are the people! [everyone talking at once] >> are you not welcome here! >> we got to be like this! get off!

>> tensions have been flaring since this morning, when the first wave of truck drivers came through. some truck drivers asked protestors to remove the barricades, some tried to remove them themselves. protestors didn't like that. they stood their ground saying we're part of occupy wall street movement. some have been criticized for hurting the 99%, including small businesses. but the protestors disagree. >> i spent 60 bucks at local businesses today. because that's what it took to be out here. some people -- you know, are saying don't go to the corporate places. i saw them try to shut down burger king today. so they're not going to the corporate businesses. they are going to the smaller businesses, and -- so i don't have any sympathy honestly. >> protestors told us they are moving the individual gates now at the port and that should be interesting since the port has its own security there. right now dozens of drivers are arriving so there is congestion

in the area. but they may be able to get through on the other side. this entrance here at third and adeline, again, blocked off. more of an annoyance for the truck drivers trying to get in and out of the port. protestors will stay until 9:00 this morning, full 24 hours after the initial protest started. we'll let you know if anything happens. tara moriarity, ktvu channel 2 news. then there was this. this scent add together tension at downtown oakland last night. a car, this car here, hit two protestors as they marched with hundreds of others by the long broadway. the angry crowd then surrounded that car as the emergency crews tended to the two injuries. the terrified drivers sat inside a car while dozens of people screamed at him through closed windows. witnesses tell us the driver panicked after hitting one person, then backed up and hit the other. both victims were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. we have been getting a lot

come to trial at the same time. occupy protestors in seattle demonstrated against one of the nation's most powerful bank executives. protestors gathered at the university of washington last night. they were denouncing the visit by the hid of j.p. morgan chase, jamie diamond. they blame him for chase acquiring washington mutual. the buyout put 3400 employees out of the work. and some military veterans are joining occupy protests marches to show solidarity with the iraq war veteran seriously injured last week in the protests in oakland. >> we swore to protect and defend! the constitution of the united states of america! >> these veterans marched in new york city supporting scott olson, whose skull was fractured when he was hit by a tear gas canister. hundreds arrested after that peaceful protested turned into a riot and a number of oakland businesses were the target of vandalism and were to

close. coming up at 7:45, pam cook is going to have more on how businesses are being affected and what some protestors are doing to help. at least nine people are homeless this morning after a fast-moving fire in season rafael. it severely damaged four condo units at this complex on knollwood drive. alex savage has been will all morning, and firefighters are still looking for hot spots. alex. >> reporter: dave this, has been a very stubborn fire. you can see the street is still closed off with crime scene tape and fire crews still out here inside this condo complex, trying to check for any flare- ups. make sure this fire doesn't flare back up. which it did several times earlier this morning. luckily, everyone made it out safely overnight although one woman suffered smoke inhalation and is being treated now at the hospital. this fire broke out just before midnight at condo complex here on knollwood drive in san rafael. it spread from that original unit to three others nearby.

the red cross tells us a totaling of nine people were displaced. crews from san rafael and several neighboring cities were able to keep the fire from jumping to other buildings in the complex, but it certainly was an anxious time for a lot of neighbors. >> you can see for yourself these are cedar shake condominiums, and they're just tinder. and the whole row could have been threatened, and the brave work the firemen were able to contain the flames. >> the red cross is now offering to help all of the displaced families. most are staying with friends and the fire department says the family living in one of these damaged units is out of town now and they have yet to find out about this fire. meantime, an investigation team has been called in to this condo complex. they'll be ought here all day long searching for clues, sifting through the debris out here, trying to figure out a cause for this fire although a chief told me earlier that at least on its face, it doesn't look like this fire is

suspicious. alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco firefighters rushed to a navy ship. it's docked in san francisco after reports of a fire. the henry j kaiser was docked at pier 70. yesterday morning workers reported smoke pouring out of the empty fuel tank. firefighters say they think it started by rags that were ignited by a nearby pump. that is generally used to supply diesel and jet fuel to other navy ships. former giants star barry bonds is making a new pitch for bryan stow. >> i would like you to join me and my friends in supporting bryan stowe and his family. >> bonds is appearing in a video posted on youtube with stowe's family. he is encouraging fans to donate money for a college fund for stowe owes two children. he visited stowe in the hospital and contributed to that fund. the show is also posted

this picture. it shows bryan stow and his ability to write his own name. he does remain in rehabilitation center recovering from a brain injury he got when knocked unconscious outside dodger stadium last march. in san jose a homeless cup from is holding a tour of a foreclosed home today. the community homeless alliance ministry will conduct a tour at 11th and james streets at 1:00 this afternoon. they say they support the occupy movement and they believe the effort should be extended to include occupying foreclosed homes for either evicted or homeless families. the recent reports say vacant foreclosed homes in the bay area are being snapped up by investors. bart wants to give back to its most loyal customers. the examiner reports bart posted a $21 million surplus last year, and bart may offer larger discounts to passengers using clipper cards, lower prices for off peak times, and

may even offer free rides to people who take more than 40 trips a month. the board will talk about possible fare changes in a staff retreat this weekend. if you're getting ready to head out the door, it's been a busy, busy morning and sal keeping an eye on all that for us. hi, sal. >> hello, claudine. we have a lot of slow traffic in many areas. first of all we'll start off in san francisco, looks like there is some sort of stalled vehicle or crash or something on southbound 101 just after the 80 split. you can see some stop and go traffic on 80 westbound, coming out to -- past the 80 split for guardrail repair. damage from an overnight crash. this closure begins well before ninth street and continues all the way up to just past the 80 split some now we know guardrail repair. was confused because they first reported this at ninth street so i guess it's going on the whole way. let's look at southbound 101 at candlestick. clearing a crash there.

it was blocking lanes, watch for slow traffic and there's also a crash in the south bay, northbound 17 right here at the hamilton avenue exit. serious crash if you're a 17 driver, give yourself plenty of extra time. let's look now at 280 northbound, that traffic is moving along pretty nicely. if you are driving this morning, until you get to bascom avenue, then it slows down. if you're driving in oakland, headed down to hayward, southbound 880 at highway 92, we have very slow traffic approaching the 92 interchange because of a crash on the shoulder. now let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. very good morning to you. all big pattern change today. it starts -- it's starting north bay already and will move over all of us. we'll get a little sun in the morning, and get that run in or whatever, mountain bike riders better go because it's dry now but that ground will get sticky here pretty fast. clouds increase, much cooler. high pressure for a couple days, had offshore wind.

new this morning, this week's jobless report is a hopeful sign for the job market. it says application dropped to 397,000, bringing it to the lowest level in five years. the labor department also says worker productivity is up in the last quarter. analysts say this is good for corporate profits because it could mean more hiring. businesses in downtown oakland became the target after the occupy movement turned violent overnewt. pam cook joins us live from the newsroom with some of the aftermath this morning. pam. >> reporter: there are peaceful protestors, and there be vandals. a lot of people including police officers want you to know there's a difference. one violent group broke into the tully shop in the plaza, smashed a window and stole food. protestors who did not take part in the attack actually tried to patch up the broken window. three say the coffee shop actually sympathizes with the occupy movement, and should not

good morning. welcome back to mornings on 2. it is thursday, november 3rd. topping our news for you this morning, an early morning riot on the streets of downtown oakland. there have been at least a hundred arrests and it was violent. and chaotic. police in riot gear firing teargas at hundreds of demonstrators right near oakland city hall. several demonstrators were seen throwing molotov cocktails and rocks amount the police. you can see several buildings had been vandalized.

this morning's riot follows a largely peaceful occupy oakland demonstration. we have live team coverage for you. tara moriarity is now at port of oakland, it's been busy there this morning. but let's start with kraig debro, near oakland city hall. kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. people who worked down here, who live here, starting to wake up and come downtown. and they do not like what they see. take a look behind me. that's the rite aid at 14th and broadway. just look at all that extra feetee. that goes all the way at least a block, one business owner says he has 300,000 dollars in damages, and that's just him. he estimates the total losses to be over a million dollars. most of the losses to private property, perhaps or at least a dozen broken windows, glass spread over the sidewalk and the street, then graffiti, just about everywhere you look, between 14th and 15th streets on broadway. but there's also some on 16th

street where the protestors took over a building. garbage cans were abused and set on fire. a woman said when she got off the bus this morning, and saw this, her heart sank. >> i'm very disappointed in what i'm seeing. oakland is a beautiful city. and there are other ways we can handle our disputes. >> police in riot gear faced off against what police called a minority of occupy oakland. police say only a couple hundred out of the 7,000 who took part in a peaceful protest caused these problems. police say protestors threw bricks, rocks and molotov cocktails. police retaliated with teargas, bone bags and a hundred people would be arrested. around 4:30 this morning, perhaps 3:00, i spoke to a man who was in a line of people who were sitting directly across from police in riot gear. he seemed john f. kennedy what

about losing some pay. i guess a lot of them aren't -- hourly wage per load or per shipment. so they're losing some money. and actually mailed a point to apologize to a few of them. >> protestors say this is all for a greater good and more attention it gets, the stronger their message becomes. some told us they're not stationed at individual gates but there is port security down there. so they may not have much of an effect. as far as we know, trucks can enter the port now through the other entrances, so this blockade here is more of an inconvenience at the moment. protestors tell us they'll be here at least another hour, 24 hours after the initial protests started. and we did notice that there was undercover police officer that came by with his camera and took pictures. but obviously police feel their presence is not needed here. perhaps more needed on the plaza where kraig is. >> thank you, tara.

how to respond to the occupy movement? that's the only item on the agenda for oakland city council meeting tonight. we'll find out if last night's vandalism and arrests swayed the council guns a resolution supporting the occupy wall street protest movement. a 15-mundt citizen comment period is slated for the beginning of the meeting and all scheduled to start at 5:30 at city hall. we do always have continuing coverage of the occupy protests on our website at ktvu.com. we also stream all of our newscasts live there. one person is known to be dead, another injured in a double shooting that happened in san francisco. a shot set ander alert sent police to a nome in the 100 block of brookdale avenue. police found a 23-year-old gunshot victim. he was pronounced dead there at the scene. san francisco general hospital later notified police about a 32-year-old man who walked in with a gunshot wound. investigators say the shootings

back now with the latest. kraig. >> reporter: you talked about the vandalism, talked to a property owner who owns a couple buildings here. he estimates his damage to be $300,000. but he says all of downtown oakland may be up to a million dollars. tonight is a big night for occupy oakland, especially camden, because tonight the city council will look at whether or not they should let the occupy oakland movement stay here in the plaza. this could be one of les times you see this plaza. we walked around this whole thing, just to observe what was going on. we wanted to see people were different, what they felt about last night, and what we found was the city is a city. it's not clean. it's not totally messy. but this has been a problem. the fire chief is here every morning checking for fire hazards. and then at one time we saw a big empty space where bricks

should have been and police saw it was those bricks that protestors picked up and threw at them during last night's riot. when i talked to a woman who works here, she just got down here this morning. she said it's very disappointing but she has ideas for what to do. >> if i lived in a perfect world, i would have -- ask everybody to come and share -- and their energy and clean up and take care of our city. because we love oakland. >> last night around midnight, police moved in on a group of protestors that took over a building on 16th street. when they tried to do that, they were met with bricks, explosives, and even some m80's. police retaliated with teargas and bean bags and made 100 arrests. before they could do that, you probably saw earlier some of

drive. ktvu's alex savage is there with more on their -- several people now homeless, right? >> reporter: that's correct, dave. this huge fire forced nine people out of their homes. they were all living in this row of condos inside this complex here on san rafael. the fire tore through overnight and you can see crews out here still at this hour dealing with flare-ups, make sure there are no hot spots that flare back up. and also trying to clean up after this fire overnight. everyone luckily made it out safely although one woman suffered smoke inhalation and is being treated at the hospital. there's no clear cause for this fire, but a chief told me it does not appear specials. the fire broke out just before midnight at the condo complex on knollwood drive. it spread from the first unit to three other connected units, very quickly. crews from other neighboring cities worked to contain the flames. one neighbor told me this was the biggest fire he has ever seen. >> the whole building was going up just like a giant match.

the flames were licking up about 25 or 30 feet above the level of the roof line. and it was one big solid flame licking up with remnants of the flame licking up above the main flame over and over, just like a huge forest fire. >> the red cross is now offering to help all the displayed families but most of them are staying with friends or neighbors or hotels. and the fire department says the family living in one of these damaged units is actually out of town right now and they have yet to find out about this overnight fire. meantime, we've watched as an investigation team has moved in here to this complex. they will be out here we're toll for most of the day, gathering evidence, trying to pinpoint an exact cause for the huge condo fire. alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. let's head back out to sal. how are the roads looking? >> they're busy this morning. certainly has been a busy

aftermath. pam. >> reporter: it may have started as a protest against big corporations on wall street, but it is certainly developed into a threat against the economy in downtown oakland. we were there this morning as you can see it, when the clean- up began at whole foods market at 27th and harrison. the word "strike" scraped off the side of the building and the windows there. that actually began yesterday afternoon. this is youtube video showing the vandals in action, and then what looks like some of the peaceful protestors actually trying to jump in and stop them. now, they're not the only protestors who stepped in to stop the violence. and clean up what has been left behind. no very positive when i saw the breaking of the windows. it broke my heart. and it was only when i saw others stopping it and cleaning graffiti. >> we've been watching clean-up

this morning. one violent group broke into actualee's coffee shop, and smash the window and stole food and graffiti is seen all over downtown oakland. chamber of commerce has been asked to step in and try to protect businesses. it does have a statement i just check its website. it says that while per mountains and inspections are routinely required for activity in public and private locations, this is not followed at campsite at the plaza. and asserting a free speech interest does not make otherwise illegal activity acceptable. pam cook back over to dave. >> thank you. in just about 10 minutes, closing arguments start in the involuntary manslaughter trial of michael jackson's doctor. dr. conrad murray decided not to testify in his own defense. adam housley is outside the l.a. courthouse with more on how the

defense wrapped up the case. >> reporter: that's right, closing arguments begin 9:00 local time here, the judge will give jury instructions as well. right now we're toll the attorneys are in the courtroom, asked to come in a half hour before as the proceedings have begun. eventually bring in the jury at 9 a.m. that's the plan. you mentioned dr. murray did not testify. that last decision came on tuesday. the judge asked him three times over the course of five weeks testimony here whether or not he would testify. the first two times he said he wasn't sure. finally the judge said i need a decision on tuesday morning. and he asked him tuesday, and murray after confirming with lawyers said he would not testify in his own behalf. so what happens now? the jury will be brought in, jury instructions will be read. lowing arguments. whether or not they believe the closing arguments will be long or short. once that is completed, jury

will have a chance to pick their foreman and go over the instructions from the judge and then contemplate only one count. they only have to decide one count, involuntary manslaughter, whether they believe that's true or not true. if they do find him guilty, he could be sentenced to four years in jail. but now we're told that even if he is found guilty. and the judge gives him the fur sentence, it could be pretty like hawaii he would serve very little if any time at all due to jail overcrowding. that's something you take into account. and if he is found guilty, that sentencing hearing would be scheduled sticks to eight weeks from now. so the jury will get this case here in about -- 10 minutes or some of we dough know the jackson family is here in force as they having been throughout the time. joe and jackson, mother and father are here, as well as sister latoya about and brother randy stemming from the death mach in 2009, where the prosecution believes dr. murray gave michael jackson that fatal dose of appropriate physical.

adam housley, ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning, there's good news from this week weak jobless report. the report says applications dropped to 397,000, bringing to to the lowest level in five years. this is only the third time since april that applications have fallen below the 400,000 mark. the labor department also says worker productivity rose at a rate of 3.1% last quarter. analysts say this is good for corporate profits and may lead to more hiring. this morning's retail sales report shows slow spend engine october. analysts say that's a bad sign for merchants heading into the holiday shopping season. the result are based on revenue at stores that have been open for a year. they're considered to be a key indicator of a retailer's health. cuba just took another baby step towards becoming a free market in morning. cuban state media report starting a week from today, cubans citizens will be allowed to buy and sell real estate.

demonstrators blocked big rigs with a metal fence. several times. angry drivers tried to knock it down. they say the protests are hurting people it's supposed to defend. the protestors said they would leave at 9:00 this morning. they haven't budged but we're hearing now the port will be operating as normal this morning. a homeless group in san jose is holding a tour of a foreclosed home today. the community homeless alliance ministry will conduct the tour of a foreclosed home at 11th and james streets. that's at 1 this afternoon. the group says it supports the occupy movement and believes the effort should be extended to include occupying foreclosed homes for evicted and homeness families. they point to recent reports saying vacant foreclosed homes in the bay area are now being snapped up by investors. here's a nice story. later this morning, u.s. marines will kick off the annual toys for tots program.
