after a day of mostly peaceful demonstrations, tear gas flies in downtown oakland when rogue protesters cause violence and vandal criminal. today, the cleanup continues. i'm claudine wong in today for torii campbell. an estimated 100 people

were arrested. and while those protesters and police seem to agree, a small group was responsible for most of the vandalism, there was still a lot of damage done. ktvu's kraig debro has been on the scene all morning long. what's next for city officials? >> reporter: we are at 16th and broadway behind me. if you are in downtown oakland today, this is a scene you will see all over downtown. business owners scraping paints over windows if they are still lucky to have them others are boarding up where windows once were. >> all we are doing is asking them as citizens, as the people who live here, as the ministers who practice their faith in their communities here, just give us a break. >> reporter: to hear police tell it, a peaceful one-day

general strike had a violent night a minority of people occupied buildings, and then attacked officers with bricks, rocks. some in the group trashed downtown, breaking windows and spray painting. >> i'm very disappointed in what i'm seeing. oakland is a beautiful city and there are different ways to disagree. >> today, a group is asking to take more pond. the news came in city hall where windows were broken. lines of communication really need to be open between the occupy oakland people and city and so far, i don't think that's happened very effectively. >> we need our cops in our neighborhood to protect i. we are the first most dangerous city, violent crime in california. the fourth in the united states. >> reporter: they say that

because the cops are so preoccupied with occupy oakland, they can't defend the rest of the city. now the city council will have to decide if the en campment stays or go. >> if we move them out, i don't want to about pull ourselves anything thinking that will stop. >> reporter: we are supposed to get a briefing from police in the city right at this hour. we'll have all the details from that later on today. no word on injuries just yet. one of the things that police do want us to know, want the city to know, a very small percentage of the people took part of these violent incidents last night. tonight, we should hear at the city council meeting, just exactly what's going to happen with the occupying encampment. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thanks, kraig. we are just getting word as well that the city officials are going to hold a press conference about 1:00 this afternoon. we are monitoring that for when

it starts and we'll bring it to you live when it happens. now, as you just saw, the cleanup after the violence is already under way but work is going to take time. we saw crews getting ready to get back to work on the wholefood market bless. wholefood hired a professional crew to it scrape the word "strike" off its windows. this footage shows the taggers in action and what looks like peaceful demonstrators trying to stop them. 80 plus people were arrested, all of them after midnight. five civilians and three officers were hurt. we do not know how bad any of those injuries are. we are told that 15 law enforcement agencies were called in to help with mutual aid the port of oakland was fully operational again as of one hour ago, following more

protests earlier. [ yelling ] >> you are the people. just turn around. >> i support what you guys do. i totally agree. i can't back my truck in. >> protester this is morning faced off with truck drivers trying to break a block aid. demonstrators erected metal penalties to keep trucks from entering the port. and cameras captured. the driver refused to stop and plowed past the demonstrators while some drivers say they do sympathize with the movement, they say it's misguided and will cost them work. >> are you going to lose money because of this? >> of course. you can do anything. how do you support your family? >> reporter: the ill will did subside. demonstrators left around 9:00 and some told us that they went

to breakfast with the long shoremen. turmoil over the debt crisis in europe cast a shadow over the g-20 meeting in france. senior officials from the euro zone nations plan a side meeting with representatives of the international monetary fund to discuss the ongoing crisis in greece and concerns over the situation in italy. protesters are calling for a worldwide day of action to coincide with that g-20 summit. occupy san francisco started their march a little more than an hour ago. tear yatara moriarty has more. >> reporter: the they got bail out, we got sold out cry was part of the chant. they left about an hour ago as part of the occupy movement.

>> banks got will bailed out. >> we got sold out. >> reporter: the group marched for about four or five blocks. they are asking for tax on transactions on wall street which they say would generate $350 billion a year for the people who need it most. they say that the obama administration opposes the adoption of a financial transaction tax but the group is pushing for it anyway. nurses here say they see the effect the economy is having on patients every day who turn up in their emergency rooms. >> we see the people who are under insured, putting off medical care. we see the stress related illness, people who have lost their home and we are out here to support the occupy movement. we are part of the 99%. we support the 99%. and enough is enough. >> reporter: dozens of officers on motorcycle and patrol cars and on foot blocked off area streets so protesters can march. the group hopes to catch the

attention of the president. g-20 leaders are meeting in france to discuss the economy and they say that mr. obama needs to be on the side of main street and not wall street. >> all right, thanks, tear ya. we will have continuing coverage on the occupy movement today. you can get the latest movement any time today by going to ktvu.com. a new economic report find there are fewer areas of extreme poverty in the bay area when you compare that to a decade ago. the brookings institute finds four of the five neighborhoods are in the east bay area. more than 40% of residents in those neighborhoods live below the poverty line there were eight areas of concentrated poverty in the bay area in 2000. meanwhile, the same study finds the number of americans living in poverty overall is at a record high.

the review shows that the impoverished population grew to 46.2 million in the last ten years. nationwide, 10% of all people live in extremely poor neighborhoods. this week of job reports is a hopeful sign. it said that application dropped to 392,000, bringing it to the lowest level in five weeks. the labor department says that worker productivity is up in the last quarter. analysts say this is good for corporate profit because it could mean more hiring. congress subpoenaed the white house this morning for more documents related to solyndra. by a 14-9 party vote, a house committee demanded that the obama administration turn over documents involve the fail solyndra loan. they want document detailing the half a billion dollars loan guarantee. democrats say that the gop is trying to further embarrass the president and the green energy

industry. and the prime minister of greece told told that country's parliament that he has changed his mind and he is not going to hold a national referendum on a european rescue deal for the greek economy. the european economy has threatened to cancel the deal if the prime minister went ahead with the national vote. greece's prime minister says he will now invite greece's conservative opposition to join the debt talk. gop presidential candidate herman cain is continuing to defend allegations of sexual harassment. a woman says that herman cain made gestures towards her. she considered filing a claim at the time but did not. the campaign calls the accusations baseless. two other employees reached a settlement for similar claims coming up, we'll tell you why this is a critical day in

in closing arguments this morning, the lead prosecutor says that the evidence is overwhelming that conrad murray's actions helped cause michael jackson's death. jackson's personal physician is facing manslaughter charges. what murray did did not have to be the sole reason that jackson died. >> conrad murray's actions need only rise to a trivial or remote factor in causing the death of michael jackson for there to be criminal liability under involuntary manslaughter. >> the prosecution contends that murray gave jackson the powerful propofol. the defense claims that jackson gave the drug to himself. fire tore through a condo last night. the flames severely damaged four condo units at the complex. one person ended up in the

hospital. >> reporter: flames poured from this row of cop doughs on norwood drive in san rafael. the fire started and quickly spread to three other connecting units. doug van quail woke up to the sound of silence. >> the flames were licking up about 20 to 30 feet below the level of the roof line and there was one big solid flame >> reporter: the first firefighter who got here found a woman outside her condo suffering from smoke inhalation. she was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. the red cross says a total of nine people were forced out of their homes by this intense fire. >> this was just a rap it quidly building fire that caused -- rapidly building fire that caused firefighters to fight the fire from outside. >> reporter: crews were able to keep the fire contained to this one building but there were anxious moments for workers in this complex worried that the

flames may jump to nearby flames. >> you can see these are cedar shake condominiums and they are timber. the whole row could have been threatened. >> a fire investigation team will spend the whole day here trying to pinpoint the cause. but the fire investigators say that the fire does not seem suspicious. starting a week from today, cubans will be able to buy and sell real estate. that announcement came into today's edition of the country's communist party daily paper. it's the latest of president raul castro's economic reform. cubans will be limited to owning one home in cities and another in rural areas. exiles wishing to get in on the land grab is out of luck. it is limited to cuban citizens and island residents only. sitting around could increase your risk of cancer. scientists found that a lack of physical activity and long

cooler for today. you probably noticed when you stepped outside. tomorrow, sun clouds mix. showers will be returning from one part of your bay area weekend. current numbers, oakland right now, mid-50s, san jose at 62. santa rosa, at this 12:00 hour, 56 degrees. here is the weather system responsible for this change it for today you can see the speck of clouds showing up right here in the pacific with the cold air for today. this is what we can expect. temperatures coming down a good 10 to 20 degrees from yesterday's high. showers developing from around 9:00 to 10:00. that unstable air moves into the region, we could have a few thunderstorms push into parts of the bay area. this will be a snow producer in the sierra. winter weather advisory kicks in at 5:00 this afternoon until 5:00 tomorrow morning. snowfall will be in the order of three to six inches and snow

coming down to about 4000 feet. here is the forecast model at 3:00, a few showers moving into central portions of the bay. more activity coming. we could have a bit more coverage here at 5:00 spreading to the south and for the evening hours, more shower clusters pushing into the bay area. once again the possibility of a thunderstorm and it's cold enough we could have a little bit of a dusting across the area, peaks up 3500 feet. so that means maybe a little bit of dusting for did i diabloo. here is a look at the extended forecast with the weekend always in view. we could have a few showers first thing tomorrow morning. only a chance but then you can see another rain cloud pushing back into the region, claudine, especially by saturday afternoon, up in the north bay, developing saturday night and maybe a few lingering showers into sunday but a big change
