jade hernandez. who's about to show us the weapons police say were used against them. >> reporter: we're going to show you in just a second. we want to show you first that there's a lot of graffiti still throughout oakland. this is just one example here at 14th and broadway. only 12 hours after officers used force to move anarchists, city leaders layed out their side of the story, literally. about 200 protesters tried to occupy a foreclosed building around 16th street admit night. >> there's reports that they were armed with rocks, bottles and other incendiary devices. >> reporter: officers pulled out tear gas and smoke grenades. >> we obviously changed our tactics from a peaceful right to assemble to something for of eluding and criminal behavior. >> we have too many people. >> reporter: police arrested

police chief howard jordan said they had over 400 police officers spanned out on the street overnight and they will continue to have a presence on the streets today and tomorrow. jade hernandez. >> more details now a special oakland city council meeting is just about to get underway. city officials say the aim is to discuss the recent violence and to evaluate the next steps moving forward. we're going to bring you that meeting live right here on ktvu channel 2 at 5:30. a lot of people are twitting on the occupy oakland website that they are furious over the violence. they are saying things like, go screw up someone elses protest. >> reporter: frank okawa plaza is a tent city and those tents came in handy late this afternoon when it started raining. but people say a little wet weather won't chase them away.

within a few blocks of frank ogawa plaza protesters were cleaning up a mess they say they didn't leave. walls scared from graffiti after last night's riots. >> what i was worried about is that the small shop owners when they got here i didn't want them to see this when they got here. i just wanted to clean it up. this is our community. >> this is hard work in many cases people paid for the cleaning supplies out of their own pocket, this college student says she spent $25. >> i feel like the, immature actions of a few are making the most of us not look very progressive. >> reporter: almost everyone here says that the an athat anarchy and violence was created by a small amount of

event took only about 15 second. you see protesters marching through the intersection then a lone protester standing in front of a mercedes pounding on a hood. then seconds later the mercedes moving forward. two people were taken to the hospital, treated and later released. >> we don't know what was going on the mind of the driver. i don't want to even make a conjecture at this point. >> reporter: they only took witness information for oakland police. but opd said they could not respond. oakland police now will determine if charges will be filed against the driver. >> do you know the folks that got hit by the car last night? >> no i don't know them. no. >> reporter: no one at the occupy oakland encampment said they knew the injured protesters and from the license plate on the mercedes we identified the registered owner but we've not been able to reach him for comment. reporting live in oakland, rita williams. things are back to normal

their jobs in the next couple of months. the lay offs will take place across the globe so it's not clear just how many jobs will be lost here in the bay area. they expect to see drops throughout the day. it's only the third time since april claims fell below 400,000. california topped the list for a surge in claims. mostly due to lay offs in the service industry. the decision by greece helped boost wall street today. the reversal led to a second day of strong gains in the u.s. market. the dow jones industrial average added 208 points. the nasdaq closed 57 points

today inside a san rafael condominium heavily damaged by a fire last night. the victim's identity has not been released but they say it might be of a 90-year-old woman. nine people were left homeless. a large south bay homeless group says they have the moral right to live in vacant foreclosed homes. the group's members toured the house they want to occupy one way or another. >> reporter: this foreclosed home near downtown san jose has been getting a lot of attention. not just from potential buyers but from that homeless group who says vacant properties as a solution to homelessness. >> we're going in. >> we're going in. >> it's very spacious. >> from the pictures that i saw it was really nice. >> reporter: these are members of cham, that has in the past

half ownership of facebook has been ordered to return to the united states. paul saglia claims he has a contract with mark zuckerberg giving him a 50% stake in facebook. the company is now worth an estimated $50 billion. seglia has been living in ireland. yesterday a judge ordered him to return to new york to search for a missing flash drive. attorneys believe that flash drive contains important information that saglia's claim is false. many are advertising their services on tweets.

early this morning when a small group broke out from a crowd of thousands and turned to violence and vandalism. ktvu's paul chambers live in oakland with who these people are and where they are from, paul. >> reporter: since we got that list i've been piling through these five pages of all these names. a lot of them are still here in the jail. and we've actually seen a couple of them come out in the last few minutes. >> 76 men and 26 women were arrested last night and can face numerous charges. but who are they? some are from oregon, utah, texas and new york. others are from southern california. but many of those arrested are from right here in the bay area including san francisco and berkeley. more than 1/3 arrested are from oakland. most were taken into custody for charges of remaining present at the place of a riot. other more serious charges include obstructing officer, defacing or destroying property with graffiti and battery against an officer. one oakland man was arrested on

assault with a deadly weapon and another man from elk grove faces a vandalism charge after an officer witnessed a suspect breaking windows at city hall. the district attorney can charge both men with felony. >> i don't want to label them as any particular group because i don't know that. generally we can serve them anarchist, people intent on hurting officers. >> these movements can't just be subdued demonstrations, people are angry. people have the right to be angry. >> reporter: now police claim it will release video they got from these problems that happened last night. these are cameras they wear on their uniforms they expect to release that tomorrow. paul chamber, ktvu channel 2 news. a special city council

meeting is getting under way right now at oakland city hall. the aim of the meeting is to decide what the next step is with the tent city and the occupy protest. they are also expected to discuss how police should respond to the protesters and the use of force specifically the firing of less lethal projectiles into the crowd. the meeting was scheduled late last night following the first wave of protest that turned violent. we are continuing to follow this meeting once it gets under way. we'll have more for you coming up on ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00. the chaos last night in oakland caused by problems for local businesses. a supermarket, banks and local shops were vandalized or forced to close early. tom vacar tells us how one major redevelopment project that could create a lot of jobs could be at risk because of what's happening to oakland's

several days since about a dozen members of congress began a very tough exercise. east bay congresswoman barbara lee is one of those living on food stamps for five days. that amounts to less than $5 a day. the congresswoman said she has had to shop very carefully and make her food last longer. but she said her hardship is nothing when you compare it to people who live in poverty every day. >> children go to school hungry, families, mothers and fathers try to figure out how they're going to take care of their kids and just survive through the day. >> reporter: our crew went shopping on food stamps with peninsula congresswoman jackie speier who is also surviving on food stamps this week. the united states and marine corp. today kicked off it's toys for tots campaign. they will ask shoppers to donate toys or cash to the toys

fewer people will be traveling by air this thanksgiving holiday. according to the air transport association annual forecast, reports will see 37,000 fewer passengers per day about a 2% drop from last year. that doesn't mean more room on the plane. airlines have cut down on flights. meaning the flights that are out there packed to capacity. another air fare hike for most domestic routes. ticks tickets on u.s. air will go up by four to $10. that air hike was quickly matched by competitors including southwest .

this was one of the vandals targets during all of the occupy general strike protests yesterday. the whole foods store 27th and harrison streets just north of lake merit. the word strike as you see there was painted across the front wall and a window was smashed. that store is cleaned up and opened tonight. but the effects of last week's vandalism and violence are being felt the day after and beyond. ktvu's consumer editor tom vacar, just in the past 15 minutes now you put a new letter out to mayor quan and it comes from the chamber of commerce. >> it's fair to say that this
