. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu channel 2news. >> 48 hours agriculture this war veteran was arrested on the frontlines of the protest. tonight he is in a hospital after surgery and he blames police. good evening. >> another war veteran in the hospital tonight after a confrontation with police break up a protest. eric live at highland hospital where he talked to friends of the man who just had surgery earlier today. >> reporter: he is still recovering from a lacerated spleen. his friends say it happened

when police arrested him early thursday morning and one of our cameras was rolling for part of that. >> i'm an iraq war vet. i had two tours in iraq, two tour; one in afghanistan. >> reporter: that plea from the 32-year-old wasn't enough to get him out of handcuffs early thursday morning. moments earlier we caught the tail end of the take down when several officers moved in to subdue him in the process his sprained friends say he was hit with batons. >> i'm just blown away that he could come back from fighting for our country and then get treated like this by the authorities. >> reporter: what's worse, friends say he was denied proper medical treatment in jail billion he made jail and was rushed to the hospital. it's the same place another vet scott olson was taken after he

had a fractured skull during another protest. a second ktvu camera caught him face to face with riot police minutes before he was arrested. >> they told him to move and he said i'm not towing anything. >> reporter: friends say the man was not part of the vandalism. >> he wouldn't do that. he is a business owner and he wouldn't harm someone else's business or cause problems. he was just out speaking his behind. >> reporter: i talked to the interim police chief and he said he is not seen the video but he said he has assigned two investigators to look into what happened. the sheriff's office is also investigating. we are live in oakland. > >> and more details, cameras were there last week when a scott olson was hurt, apparently hit in the head with

a tear gas canister. he is improving and is doing great in his friends words. he is texting but they aren't revealing anything more about the 24 early-year-old. >> for the first time oakland is provide something of the cost related to the protest as we first reported at six, the city said it had spent more than a million dollars on people and other costs through last saturday including $700,000 for police and 37,000 for public works crews and information technology workers. again these numbers don't include just the past week. so-called hard costs add up quickly. the police and public works departments have each spent $70,000 on supplies and equip helicopterment. another one hundred thousand was spent on security to protect the police department's website that was targeted by hackers and 25,000 went to repair damage down it the plaza. timing said to be everything in politics and tonight the mayor

is unable to reset her clock as the camp grows right outside her office. tonight she is under attack from business leaders and some city officials. they say they are angry she let the camp to return to the plaza. at the same time her earlier decisions to evict them and let the use of tear gas hasn't won her support among the protesters either. >> her handling of the protesters is seen as a national model for what not to do. it's a case study of the wrong response at the wrong time. >> the forceful removal of the camp 11 days ago also cut off many of her long time progressive supporters and put oakland in the national spotlight. just blocks from the plaza it was opening night at the symphony. what we found when we asked people here and around town

about the protesters. >> new video where 11 of the 35 students on a school bus were taken to the hospital because they may have inhaled diesel fumes. we are told the line on the bus ruptured and fuel sprayed inside the bus. the driver pulled over on the boulevard and then called for help. the students were returning to wood side high from a rafting trip. taking them to the hospital was a precaution. new jobless numbers are offering a glimmer of hope for the unemployed and the economy. the labor department is reporting that last month unemployment dropped to 9% nationwide as the economy gained about 80,000 jobs. even so experts say the numbers below what is needed. it's a mixed bag as john learned today. >> reporter: the building of a new d dealership in walnut creak has put a lot of people

job. >> reporter: how does that make you feel? >> frustrated. >> reporter: looks like there is a lot of opportunities but looks can be deceiving. >> we have them posted there and so, it's hard. >> reporter: this construction project will hope as the new dealership in about two weeks. the superintendent said his crew will likely fibbed find more work after because he said companies putting people to work on other projects. in walnut creek. >> a legal challenge was launched today in four california cities including san francisco to block a federal crack down on medical marijuana. last month california's four united states attorneys announced a wide ranging investigation saying the industry had been hijacked. the lawsuits filed today are on behalf of the landlords and other. they say the justice department should come to the table and talk reasonablely about public poll civil.

>> pg&e crews found a new leak in the same gas pipeline that exploded in san bruno. they said they found it in palo alto during the testing of a stretch of the pipe about 20 miles south of san bruno. they say a high pressure water test indicated a very small hole about a millimeter. they plan to pinpoint the leak by injecting a special gas that can be detected by electronic sniffers. >> once you get those indications we will dig out the area and hopefully identity where this pin hole leak is and make repair its on that. >> pg&e also plans to retrofit a section of the pipe. they plan to install a new pipe inside the first one which will then be a protective casing in the event of a quake. >> a frost advisory is going up overnight for some of the bay area's inland valleys as the temperatures fall.

. just four days to go until election day and we learned about a printing problem that could send tens of thousands of voters to the wrong polling site come tuesday. >> that's right. could be more than 100,000 people who got these guide was the wrong polling address sending them instead to a house up here on howell street. the elections director said an outside printer's error on the guides ended up directing 11 5,000 to a polling place near city college, a mistake they are rushing to clear up. >> i don't want them to go there and all the sudden very 3,000 people in line. >> reporter: that's just one of the concerns as the city prepares for tuesday's election. today workers were sorting vote by mail ballot, turn out has

been low with only 1500 early vote he. >> i know who i want to vote for. may as well get it done. >> reporter: another issue is the rank choice vote that could factor in to the mayor race with a huge field of 16 candidates. in 2007 the mayor captured 74% of the vote in the first round but this year if nobody gets a majority it'll kick in. >> it's confusing yes. >> reporter: officials have posted signs throughout the city showing how to mark candidates and a reminder not to put the same in all three. >> if you mark the same one three times it counts once. >> reporter: many seem to be getting used to the system that was launched in 2004. >> avoid the run off and that's what the intention is because costs less. >> reporter: some wonder how it'll affect the race. >> i think it'll be a close call. hopefully we have somebody who is cost in what they are doing.

in greece the debt and political crisis appears to be letting up a bit. in a session the prime minister survived a no confidence vote. now he is starting talks on a new coalition government and said he will step aside if necessary. had the government collapsed it would have threatened the deal on his country's massive debt and that would have had global consequences. >> concerns about the greek vote weighed on iter investors. the markets ended on the downside. the dow lost 61 points. groupon gained nearly $17 billion on its first day. the stock was offered at $20 a share and closed at above 26. some say they have doubts about the business model and accounting. >> a man convicted of shooting two men in a church was sentenced to 40 years to life

in prison. prosecutors say the 20-year-old was searching for a rival gang member on valentine's day of last year when he burst in to the church. when he didn't find his target he shot and wounded his rival's two brothers who were 14 and 19. his family pleaded, saying he is mentally ill however the judge wasn't could vinceed and said bugs showed a lack of concern for the lives of others. embezzlement charges against a former giant giante playe have been expanded. robino connor is a accused of embezzling $2.2 million. a new court document filed in the case is one that is normally used when a defendant intends to plead guilty. >> that long and delicate surgery to separate twin

sisters. rita williams tells you how they are doing and what their mother did to prepare them to be separated. >> reporter: blowing kisses, that's the way they said good- bye to me the day before their life changing surgery. that and a smile. >> they play differently and talk different. >> reporter: we watched as angelina fit pieces in to apposes that her sister threw on to the floor. >> she just think of joined at the stomach and chest there was no way for the 2-year-old sisters to take time out from each other. surgery at the hospital changed that. we learned today both girls now are awake in separate beds breathing on their own. their mom tried to prepare them for separation by taking their dolls apart. >> soon you will be separated like this. >> reporter: this is the

alternative to surgery. these girls joined at the head once were a side show attraction. for a while that was the same fate for these two, born in 1811, the reason they used to be called siamese twins. >> they share the pelvis or share spinal cord or the brain. those are still waiting for advancing that we haven't had yet. >> reporter: next week we should see the first pictures of the now separated twins. rita williams,. >> your saturday morning will be a cold one. these are the overnight lows forecast and it'll be colinear some areas, look at all of the upper 30s and low 30s near freezing or at freezing. your saturday morning events will need a jacket. anything before ten, 11:00 and the daytime highs won't get that much warmer.

. as the move helicopter changes there is a growing group of part time protesters, lot of people who believe in the movement are juggling their work and family obligations to spend time at the camp. we found one man who said he normally spends five hours a day there. he didn't want to be shown so his employer wouldn't know how "time" he spends doing it. >> i have to balance my responsibility to my family and my children especially, my obligation to support my kid with my desire to be more deeply involved. . and something unusual for

both part timers and the die hards, when this yoga flash mob added a new dimension to the protest. >> a time magazine article online suggested oakland is starting to cover the original wall street in new york as the center of the movement. how do oakland residents feel? amber lee visited several corners including opening night at the symphony to ask about it. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: the theme of opening night the age of agony as the city contend was the discontent of protesters just a few blocks away. the michael morgan has lived here 22 years and has sympathy for the group but concerned about their impact. >> those of us who are not actually participating but are in sympathy will go out of our

way to support the businesses that are right around that area. >> reporter: a few blocks south these two friends said the movement has caused them to switch bank. >> i'm with chase now. >> it's helped me think about a lot of the issues. >> reporter: in east oakland we saw parents walking their children home. they said they agree with the message of the movement but not the violence. >> that is not -- nothing to do with what we want. we want change, not violence. >> i'm fed up with it. i'm actually more fed up with the leadership with the government,. >> reporter: this father said the city's official move to remove the protesters then let them back drained resources and is hurting residents. >> we are spending our time fighting protesters who isn't stay on course. what is going on?

>> reporter: in this hotel a group called circle of friends marked 20 years of giving the mentally ill a voice. >> it's about us being together and about the power we give each other. >> reporter: about 50 people gather to recognize the gains they have made in controlling their inner demons. >> i do admit i have mental illness. >> reporter: instead of being locked up they are living out in society on their own. this is part of the consumer elm powerment movement allowing the mentally ill choices and a say in how they are treated. >> i know what i need. i know what i believe. i know what -- who i am. that keeps me out of the hospital. >> reporter: mental health professionals say they realize their patients have a say in their treatments. >> folks recognize that

. it's not part of the protest but a grass roots movement is asking people to traction father their money tomorrow out of the big banks. we talked to people already making the switch and one business that seeing up ticks in customers. >> reporter: a group of 40 parents with their children in tow marched to the wells fargo
