good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it's november 5th, saturday. a very chilly start to the weekend, let's get right to rosemary with your forecast. >> good morning to you! it's a frosty start out there. although a frost advisory has expired for our area. we're waking up a very cool, some near freezing but in the overnight hours the high clouds have moved over and that has actually put the brakes on that cooling trend we've been seeing. we are going to remain cool through the morning hours. by afternoon, the wet weather will arrive. we will break it down for but show what you you can expect for your saturday, coming up! there's a nationwide movement underway today to encourage americans to take action at their banks. organizers want people to walk in, close their accounts, and head to a credit union. ktvu's ali rasmus joins us live from san rafael with more on bank transfer day. >> reporter: the banks are certainly aware of this movement, and so are the credit unions. many credit unions are going to be open late today, some have

taken out ads telling people they're staying open late to accommodate any new customers who may want to come in today and open some new accounts. people taking part in bank transfer days are upset with the major banks for a number of reasons. the federal bailout, some people think the banks don't pay their fair share in taxes. but much of the momentum started a couple months ago when bank of america announced plans to add a $5 fee for its debit card users. other banks, wells park, chase and citigroup, also said they would consider a similar move, and that's when many customers started closing their accounts. all of those banks have since dropped plans for that debit card fee, but meantime an estimated 650,000 people have opened new accounts with credit unions and more are expected to do so today. >> i am a customer of one of the big four banks, and i fully expect for us to do my bank next. and i'm going to close my account and my child's account is there, and i've been banking with this big bank since my mom

started me a account there when i was in junior high some i'm a long time customer and i'm fed up. i'm going to a credit union. >> a trade group says major banks are taking notice of this. >> i think banks want people's business, and i think they do listen to consumers. as we've seen recently. and they respond to consumer sentiment. the key is consumer to find the bank that suits them the best. >> now, consumers are advised to do their research before switching their accounts. here's some tips to consider. first make sure you're eligible to join a credit union, make sure it's federally insured. also don't move all your money at once. set up direct deposit and your automatic debits first, then verify the transfers are working correctly, then you can move the rest of your money to that new account.

al ali rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. another war veteran is in the hospital this morning after a confrontation with police in downtown oakland during thursday's occupy riots. >> i'm an iraq war vet! i did to 24 in iraq, one tour in afghanistan! >> our camera recorded 32-year- old kayvan sabehgi making a plea to police early thursday morning. moments earlier, officers can be seen trying to sub do you the 32-year-old. he says he suffered a lacerated spleen and other injuries as a result of officers using their batons. >> he was walking his dog, and just seeing what was going on. and it started getting thicker, and they asked him to move, and he said i don't like what you're doing. >> he is part owner of the elevation 66 brewing company in el cerrito. friends tell us he was not part of the vandalism in downtown

oakland early thursday morning. the police chief tells ktvu two investigators are now assigned to look into this incident. and in washington, d.c., two pedestrians are sent to the hospital after getting hit by a car near the occupy d.c. protests. ahead at 7:15, why this morning the driver is not facing any charges. the costs are adding up for oakland as it continues to deal with the consequences of the occupy protests. the city said it spent more than a million dollars les saturday. that includes $700,000 for police and public works and information technology workers. guinness these numbers do not include the past week. and mayor quan is now calling on occupy protestors to move to a new location. if they continue to act out. the mayor said the protestors may need to work with the city to move their encampment to a less disruptive area. she didn't say where the area might be. she said the protestors need to

take some responsibility. there's a riot in oakland led to one real estate developer to take matters into his own hands. as we told you yesterday, developers phil used his loaded shotgun to scare away rioters trying to get inside his building. he says he had no choice because there was no police presence at the time. that story is now earning him support, some online commentators calling on him to run for mayor of oakland. but he tells the contra costa times he has no plans to run for mayor. legendary 60 minutes commentator andy rooney has died. it was just last month the 92- year-old gave his farewell address on the show. he died late last night at a new york hospital from complications following an undisclosed surgery. he was known for his surly perspective and more than three decades on the show he delivered nearly 1100 commentaries. andy rooney, dead at age 92. three people were rushed to

the hospital overnight after a shooting in san francisco's mission district. police say gunfire was reported on 16th and hops streets, not far from bart station. officers say a 24-year-old man and a 42-year-old man suffered life-threatening wounds. a 34-year-old was also shot, and he is expected to survive. there is no word yet from police on what led up to this shooting. no arrests have been made. 14 and family of oscar grant will gather this evening to mark the first anniversary of the sentencing of johannes mehserle, a former bart police officer received a two-year prison sentence for shooting and killing grant back on new year's day, 2009. me was released this past june, after serving half his sentence for involuntary manslaughter. today's rally begins at 5 p.m. at franco gallow plaza. organizers will stand in solidarity with the occupy oakland protestors there. a group of peninsula high school students are recovering

this morning after inhaling diesel fumes from their school bus. the vehicle carried some 35 students from woodside high in redwood city. they were returning from a trip to yuba city when a fuel leak forced the driver to pull into pleasant hill. about 11 students went to the hospital for minor problems. you better bundle up and carry an umbrella this weekend. workers at lick observatory are already encountering snow. look at that! the cold snap is bringing many plant owners to the fuji garden center in san jose. they're seeking advice on how to best protect their plants with a temperature drop. and last night's frost advisory in parts of the bay area. >> reduce your watering to probably one-fourth of what you usually do. and i would start deadheading most of your lavender and other varieties that are starting to look skunky for the rest of the year. >> some south bay homeless shelters opened early yesterday to protect people from having to brave the cold. they don't plan it open

good morning to you, san rafael! cool start to the derek high clouds ahead of the next storm that approaches the area for the afternoon. new this morning a series of earthquakes is rattling the midwest. the first quake was a 4.7 magnitude after midnight pacific time and was centered near the town every prague, oklahoma. that's about 50 miles east of oklahoma city. since then, they're reporting five aftershocks ranging from 3.4 to 2.7. law enforcement have not received any reports of injuries, but several people say items have fallen off shelves in their homes. the 4.7 quick was felt by people in states as far away as kansas, missouri and arkansas. also new this morning are two people in the hospital after getting hit by a car near

the occupy d.c. protests. it happened last night after the car drove through a crowd and hit three people altogether. two had to be taken to the hospital. their conditions are not known. the driver is not facing any charges. the d.c. police department says the driver had a green light and the pedestrians hit were apparently trying to block the roadway. the work of the original occupy wall street protests is starting to change. organizers in new york city have brought in large tents to replace several smaller ones. the idea is to increase safety and communication among the protestors. some tents will be designated for groups like women only, or transgender. efforts to secure a bailout for the country are moving ahead. the greek prime minister survived a no-confidence vote it thorn partly because he vowed to step aside to for. a new coalition government, which is seen as the only way greece can secure that bailout

package approved by european union leaders. the bailout package is needed to greece can avoid a default on its debt. and marine one brought president obama back to the white house late last night. the president spend the les two days in france and much of that summit focused on making sure thely doesn't follow grosse into a near default on its debt. with president obama traveling back home, veto biden taped the video address and the focus once again on jobs. >> my dad used to say a job is about a lot more then a paycheck. it's about dignity. it's about respect. and too many americans have been stripped of their dignity through no fault of their own. so we can't wait to help them. >> the vice president taped the online video address yesterday after speaking to students at the university of pittsburgh. in our election 2012 coverage, two g.o.p. candidates for president will face off in a debate tonight. but it will be a bit different

format. businessman herman cain and former house speaker newt gingrich will debate each other in houston. and tonight's event is inspired by the 1958 lincoln douglas debates. there's no moderator and it will last 90 minutes. during the debate, the two candidates will discuss and respond to each other's positions on domestic policy. the night's event is being hosted by the texas tea party. and as her maine cain gets ready to take part in the debate he's also dealing with his ongoing sexual harassment scandal. the campaign is considering a lawsuit against the politico website which broke the news that two women accuse cain of sexual harassment in the late 1990s. politico says it's standing by the story. meanwhile, a lawyer for one of the women who accused cain of harassment says his client has no plans to go public. >> she and her husband see no value in revisit this is matter now, nor in discussing the

matter any further publicly or privately. in fact, it would be extremely painful to do some of. >> the lawyer went on to say his client stands by the sexual harassment claim she made against herman cain. the women ended up receiving a settlement. there's a new public service announcement aimed at helping kidnap victims and jaycee dugard has let her face and voice to the cause. [audio not understandable] >> this was released yesterday on behalf of the jaycee foundation, which helps families who are victims of abduction or suffered traumatic injuries. jaycee was kidnapped by philip garrido and his wife and held captive at their home near antioch for 18 years. jury deliberations in the dr. conrad murray trial will continue on monday. protestors on both sides of the case made their voices heard yesterday outside the courthouse. inside the courthouse, jurors failed to reach a verdict after

beginning deliberations earlier in the day. the deliberations followed six weeks of testimony. the prosecution is accusing murray of involuntary manslaughter for the death of pop star michael jackson. >> the evidence in this case is overwhelming. the evidence in this case is a you abundantly closure that conrad murray acted with criminal negligence that, conrad murray caused the death of michael jackson. >> what dr. murray gave michael jackson absolutely would not have harmed him without an unusual and intervening circumstance. >> seven men and five women sit on the jury. a two-hour notice will be given once a decision is announced. several police officers and sheriff's deputies in sacramento are facing weapons charges this morning after being accused of illegally selling weapons. federal agents did serve search warrants in the case this past week. the sheriff's department is only saying that there is an ongoing investigation and that

other departments are involved. it's not known what kind of weapons the officers and deputies are accused of selling. prison inmates in riverside county may soon be charged rent. an ordinance unanimously approved by county supervisors would charge prisoners about $140 per day. now, if payments can't be made, the county would put a lien against the inmates' property or the nearest family member's property. county supervisors say it is fair, since inmates receive free medical compare have access to public defenders. >> this also very important time for counties and cities to recognize ways in which we can be reimbursed for the costs of providing services. >> if the measure is passed, the county estimates it could bring in 3 to $5 million per year in added revenue. kelly slater is no longer an lever time surfing champ. the mistake that caused him to lose the title for now. >> and the focus on our weather

a british company says california could hit the jackpot, if the firm is allowed to take over the lottery. the group is proposing to manage lottery sales and marketing. the company believes it can boost ticket sales and generate far greater earnings. camelot would also pay the state a fee of a billion dollars. the group already consults with california and operates the united kingdom's national lottery. a convenience store in stanford, connecticut sold a powerball ticket this week. the owner says a customer is insisting he picked those right numbers, but there's a slight problem. >> he said his number but he can't find the ticket. he lost the ticket. so i don't know what to say.

welcome back to mornings on 2. it is being called bank transfer day. organizers are planning rallies and marches across the bay area and the entire country. the goal, to get people to close their big bank bank accounts. ali rasmus is live to explain. >> reporter: the idea behind it, moving your money to make a statement. so moving from one of four major banks like bank of america, chase, wells fargo and citigroup to a smaller community bank, or even a credit union, that operates as a not-for-profit. the people taking part in bank transfer day are upset with the major banks for a number of different reasons. number foreclosures, the federal bailout, but much of the momentum for this started a couple months ago when bank of america announced plans for a $5 debit card fee for its debit card users. other big banks said they would also consider similar move and that's when many customers started getting angry and closing their accounts. all of those banks have since

dropped their plans for deb the card fees. meantime, an estimated 650,000 people have opened new accounts with credit unions, more are expected to do so today. we talked to one man planning to close his account at within of the major banks and he explained why. >> you have no ethics. that's it. >> so where are you moving your money to, a credit union? >> i'm not sure yet. credit union, maybe not. i'm not sure yet. >> we also talked to a spokeswoman from a banking industry trade group and she says major banks are sitting up and taking notice of this movement. >> banks are very competitive, and they want your business. so they are going to try to offer the most competitive rates. and you can't just take it for granted that you're going to get better rates at a credit union. >> now, there are some advice that consumers should take into consideration. some tips before they make a switch. first of all, you should make sure you're eligible to join a credit union because not everyone is. make sure that credit union is

my children especially, my obligations to support my kids with my desire to be more deeply involved. >> one man we did talk to do not want to go on camera because he believes his employers might not like the fact he spent several hours each day at that occupy encampment in san francisco. the occupy fort collins movement in colorado is distancing itself from a arsonist. mrs. say 29-year-old ben gilmore set fire to a condo complex under construction, destroying the building and damaging a second nearby building. before the fire, he reportedly spent time at the occupy fort collins. >> he may have stopped by, but he is in no way a direct relation to our movement. peaceful protestors. >> one person's actions within the group does not represent the group. >> gilmore's mother and wife left court yesterday after his first court appearance. during that appearance, his mother asked the judge to lower the $250,000 bond.

the judge refused. firefighters found a body while battling flames apt a condo in san rafael thursday morning. neighbors say it is likely that of a 90-year-old resident. two units were destroyed and two others were damaged in the fire. firefighters are still looking for the exact cause, but they say it appears to be accidental. pg&e says it will take several days to repair a pin hole size leak in the same pipeline that explode indeed san bruno last year. a high pressure safety test this week uncovered the leak in palo alto near page mill road. that's about 20 miles south of san bruno. crews are draining the line of water and will then pump a special traceable gas to locate the leak. pg&e says the hole is about a millimeter in diameter, and not an immediate health hazard. >> it should be fairly easy to

repair. what we can to is put a sleeve around the pipe or if it requires we might just cut out and replace this section of pipe as well. >> of the 60 tests completed so far, pg&e says two have revealed leaks. pg&e also plans to retro if the a section of a 50-mile pipeline in san francisco. three people have been detained in connection to a shoot that injured an 11-year- old san francisco girl. 911 calls reported several gunmen yesterday afternoon who were firing into a mini park on leeland avenue and peabody streets. that is in the city's visitation valley neighborhood. a bullet grazed the girl but her injuries are not life- threatening. the gunman was seen driving off in a green lexus. police located that vehicle and recovered a gun. the woman hit by a san francisco muni train is doing worse than originally thought. she was struck on 19th avenue on thursday night.

it was originally reported she suffered non-life-threatening injuries, but police now say she is in critical condition. that crash remains under investigation. san francisco's city hall will open its doors at 10:00 this morning for voters who want to turn their ballots in early. meantime, the election department is raying to solve a problem before tuesday's election day. an outside printer published voting guides directing 115,000 people to the wrong polling place near city college. >> that's the primary thing that i'm worried about for this election something, that the people who have that -- on the back of their voter guide and it's not their polling place, i don't want them in to go there and all of a sudden i have like 3,000 people online. >> three notices have been sent to voters telling them their correct polling place. another concern is clearing up any confusion over the rank choice voting system turns out -- turnout is expected to be or is so far fairly low. officials say 1500 people have voted at city hall.

there's a recall this morning involving frozen oysters sold to asian grocery stores in california and seven other states. korean farm is voluntarily recalling this brand quarterback frozen oysters. those are passed in three pound bags and and have a use-by date of february 2013. the fda says three people in washington state at restaurants ate those oysters and then later tested positive for moreo virus. recreational fishermen are bringing if there can be this morning. make the season a lot longer whether there's more crab available.

a bus crash kills one college student and injures 15 people in texas. the vehicle belonged to abilene christian university. the agriculture students were headed on a mission when their bus hit a highway culvert and flipped over several times. four passengers are in critical condition this morning. airline passengers could get annoyed this holiday season. fares are generally higher this thanksgiving compared to last thanksgiving. and some cases, the difference is more than 20%. airlines are saving money by cutting down on the number of flights. travel agents say boy tickets as soon as possible, and expect to pay $5 a day more for each day you delay through thanksgiving. local hospitals and chain, are facing a drug shortage.

protests will be taking place. >> reporter: that demonstration is supposed to happen here in front of bank of america to cone side with when is called bank transfer day. a day for people to express their frustration with major banks by clouding their accounts in moving their money to a small been or credit union. [audio not understandable] this all started with a facebook page. a business owner was upset and bank of america's plans for new fees for debit card users, back in late september. and since then the facebook page has grown to tens of thousands of supporters. an estimated 650,000 americans have opened new credit union accounts since september. now, the movement also begin traction with other people who are upset with the becomes future other reasons, foreclosure rate, the federal bailout, we talked to two people this morning who are

closing their accounts and they explained why. >> we have no ethics. that's it. >> so where are you moving your money to, a credit union? >> i'm not sure yet. credit union, maybe, maybe not. not sure yet. >> the b of a 5-dollar atm got me thinking how we bailed this. out and if you it's time to serve us, the customers. they want to keep charge us a lot of extra money some seemed like they're very grote. >> consumers thinking about making the switch are advise towed do some research ahead of time. first make sure you're eligible to join a credit union. mack sure the credit union is federally insured. also it's recommended you don't move all your money at once. set up direct deposit first, and your automatic debits first verify the transfers are working correctly, then move the rest of your money over. so although this is supposed to happen today, bank transfer day this, could be a longer process for people taking part.

occupy san francisco is set to march from justin herman plaza today. the march starts at 2 p.m. protestors are planning to head to the federal reserve building as part of that nationwide protest against banks. after that, they plan to head to the bank of m tower in the financial district. thursday's riot in oakland went one real estate developer to make matters into his own hands. developers phil used his loaded shotgun to scare away rioters who were trying to get inside his building. he says he had no choice bus there was no police presence at the time. the story is now earning him support. some online commentators are calling on him to run for mayor of oakland. he tells the contra costa times he has no plans to run for mior at this time. many of the people taking part in occupy san francisco and occupy oakland are camping out every night. but other protestors are just protesting part time. we did find several people spend, just a for you hours a

day at the encampments. most are juggling work, family and otherrer other obligations but want to give what they can to the movement. >> i'm a young professional. i can't say where i work, but i do work 50 hours a week. >> i have to balance -- >> one man we talked to believes his employers might not like the fact he does spend several hours each day at the occupy encampment in san francisco. a man said to be involved in the occupy movement in colorado is in trouble with the law. coming up in 15 minute, the crime he is accused of committing and what the occupy camp has to say about it. three people have been detained in connection to a shoot that injured an 11-year- old san francisco girl. 911 calls reported several gunmen yesterday afternoon fired into a park on leeland avenue and peabody streets in the city's visitation valley neighborhood. a bullet grazed the girl and her injuries are not life- threatening. the gunman we're seeing driving

off in a grown lexus and police located the vehicle and recovered a gun. the condition of a woman hit by a san francisco muni train is worse than originally thought. she was struck by an m train at 19th avenue and randolph street thursday night. it was originally reported that she suffered non-life- threatening injuries but police now say she's in critical condition. the crash remains on investigation. on monday the marin county coroner expects so release the identity of a person killed in a fire in san rafael thursday morning. neighbors say it's likely a 90- year-old resident. two units were destroyed and two others damaged in the fire. firefighters are still looking for the exact cause but they do say it appears to be accidental. pg&e says it will take several days to repair a pin hole size leak in the same pipeline that exploded in san browno les year. a high pressure safety test this week uncovered the location in palo alto near page mill road and juniper

boulevard. it's just about 20 miles south of san bruno. crews are draining the line every water and will then pump a special traceable gas to locate the leak. pg&e says the hole is about a millimeter in diameter and not an immediate health hazard. >> a pair like this should be fairly easy to do. what we can do is put a sleeve around the pipe, or if it requires we might cut out and replace the section of pipe as well. >> of the 60 hydrotests completed so far, two have revealed leaks. pg&e also says it plans to retrofit a section of a 50-mile long pipeline in san francisco. local hospitals and chain ex are facing a drug shortage. the bay citizen reports many of the drugs are needed for cancer treatment and surgeries. the government is blaming the shortage in part on the introduction of more drugs without the same production capacity. president obama even signed an executive order this week to help drug shortages.

local hospitals have been trade to go cover up shortfalls. the new federal crackdown on medical marijuana dispensaries is facing four lawsuits this morning. dispensaries and left hand lords in four california cities filed those lawsuits yesterday, including san francisco. they want the department of justice to come to the trouble and take about reasonably about public policy. the four u.s. attorneys have deferred the crackdowns saying the medical marijuana industry has been hijacked by profiteers. san francisco's city hall will open at 10:00 in morning for voters who want to turn in their ballots early. meantime, the election department is racing to solve a problem before tuesday's election day. officials say an outside printer published voting guides directing 115 thundershower people to the wrong polling place near city college. >> that's the primary thing that i'm worried about for this election is that the people who have that health street on the back of their voter guide and not their polling police, i

the bombings and shootings around the city in the northeastern part of that african nation. gunmen blue up a bank and attacked police stations and churches. a radical muslim sect is claiming responsibility. it wants the nigerian government to enforce strict muslim edicts, threatening more attacks if that does not happen. rescue crews pulled out 45 coal miners and china. they spent 36 hours trapped by thursday's cave-in. rescuers dug a small tunnel 1600 feet deep to reach the miners. while eight miners died, seven were pulled to safety yesterday. the earthquake caused chunks every coal and rock to explode in the mine. some 2,000 people are killed each year in chinese mining disasters. there have been no reports of damage or injuries after an earthquake in chile overnight. a 5.7 magnitude quake struck in the northern part of the country. last year an 8.8 earthquake and tsunami in chile killed more than 500 people. in grosse this morning, efforts to secure a bailout for the country are moving a hess.
