hall of justice up in the third floor. about an hour ago, the news conference wrapped up. it whats with -- it was with george gascon. family members quietly followed him upstairs. he said the plea deal was consideration for the family members and that way the family doesn't have to come to court every day and see the man who killed kate huran. >> i'm very sad but i feel good there was a plea and this horrible monster will never see the light of day. >> reporter: today, the d. announced that -- d.a. announced that scott holland accepted a deal and waived his right to future state and federal appeals. he's expected to receive 50 years to life in prison. in november of last year, he posed as a pg&e worker and went looking to make a victim his victim. after knocking on the doors of

russian hills homes, kate huran opened hers. holland told investigators he was upset his wages had been varnished to -- to pay for child support. >> he went to cash his check, buy drugs and he was looking to rape a woman, he told police. >> reporter: police found holland after -- police found huran after making a welfare check. since he first came back from a trip, holland might have assumed there could have been a problem while he was on the trip. he says the timing of the announcement should not provide his opponents with ammunition. >> this case impacts me at many levels. anybody that tries to attach politics to this is really wrong. >> i also want to continue to do what we do in our community. to make sure that san francisco does not end up having people

coming in from out of the area. -- area. he should never have been here. >> reporter: kate huran's friends have now started a group to make sure that people who are paroled don't get paroled to neighbors he didn't -- neighborhoods he didn't commit his crime. holland is set to be sentenced nextment -- next month. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, kraig. a new report shows the crime rate is down in the area of north oakland under a controversial gang injunction. the injunction was put in place last year, designating a 100 block area of north oakland as a safety zone. according to a city staff report preparing for a meeting tonight. crime in the area is down by 2% over the past 16 months. however, serious crimes like assault with a deadly weapon, robbery and carjacking did increase. seven of the 15 people named in

the injunction have been arrested, six of them outside of the safety zone. city officials say that proves the injunction is successful. oakland police are investigating the shooting death of a man outside an apartment complex. police were called to kurkum court just after 8:00 last night. they found a man in his 40s who sh been shot several times. he was pronounced dead at the scene. police have not released any information about the victim or the suspect. an oakland man is behind bars this noontime after police say he beat up his own mother and left her with serious injuries. it happened around 9:00 yesterday morning at a home on snake road in the oakland hills. the names have not yet been released. the woman's son was arrested. neighbors say police have been calmed to the house numerous times. they also say the mother warned them to be careful around her son. >> his mother has come out and told us that he's not a good person. that's the whole reason why i

cannot stay home alone. my grandmother fears he might come next door and something might happen. >> the woman is in the hospital. her condition is not known. it's election day, at least for some people. odd-year elections are becoming increasingly rare. many communities try to only hold elections on even years as a way to save money and reach more voters but there's important issues on ballots. allie rasmus joins us live in san francisco where voters are deciding on a new mayor, sheriff and district attorney. is everything going. thely? >> reporter: so -- is everything going okay? >> reporter: so far, so good. you can hear the horns honking. but the real action for today is happening inside the basement of san francisco city hall. that's where the elections office. now, the direct off elections says so far all of the voting machines are working correctly. there are no major lines at any

of the city's 409 polling places. but the director said he's surprised by one thing, early voter turnout was lower than expected. yesterday he expected it would be 25%. today he rely -- revised those turnout numbers downward. >> we're looking at 15, 16%. so it would have to be a big push to get to 50%. that surprised me. i think everyone is kind of surprised by that. >> reporter: there are 16 candidates running for san francisco mayor. voters are choosing a district attorney also and also for the first time in decades, the city will have a new sheriff. candidates took advantage of these final hours of campaigning, making the rounds on old fire trucks, flashy buses and shaking hands with people outside of the stores. voters will used the -- will use the rank-choice voting system when they cast their ballots today. that means they will have to vote for their first, second and even third-choice candidates with each office. if no sickle candidate gets a

majority of the vote, then the second and third-choice candidates start to get counted. it makes the outcome so -- outcome a little more interesting in the whole -- you know, processed a little more precarious. >> some people say that's not a good thing. i like intrigue. >> i don't think you get the voters really -- i don't think you get the voters who people really want in office. and i think a perfect example of that is what happened in oakland. >> reporter: now, in oakland's mayoral race last year, jean quan didn't get the most first- choice votes but did get the most second and third-choice votes combined so she ended up winning. here in san francisco, the director says he should know if by midnight if the candidates have a clear majority. if they don't, then the rank- voting process goes into place and then the second and third- choice candidates will be

professors at sonoma state and other cal state university campuses are walking informational picket lines today. they say it's about saving public education. and they are unhappy with the chancellor. another -- chancellor and other csu officials. >> their priorities seem to be in enriching and hiring more managers, spending less on students, charging them more fees and giving them less classes. we think that's harmful for the students, the faculty and the the state of california. >> last year our fees eb went up 30% -- fees went up 30%.
