>> i'm tori campbell. it's thursday, november 10th. dave clark has the day off. topping our news, another tense standoff in the "occupy movement." this time it's on the campus of uc berkeley. police and protesters have been involved in several violent confrontations overnight. alex sav vig joins us -- savidge has more. >> reporter: good morning. so far the students are being allowed to camp out here in front of sprawl hall. you can see police officers are standing by, uc berkeley police, and you can also see that a couple of tents are set up on the plaza area and some people are sleeping in sleeping bags. a very calm scene, a lot different than what we saw late last night as police moved in to clear out what was a growing encampment here, part of the "occupy cal" movement.

>> peaceful process! >> peaceful process! >> peaceful process! >> hey! get back! back! back! >> reporter: this is the scene last night as protesters clashed with police at sprowl plaza on the campus. officers in riot gear used their batons to push through a group of people trying to get through. a police sergeant toll me this morning, close to -- told me this morning, close to 40 people were arrested, including a cal student and one protester -- prefacer. protesters are upset about the rising cost of education. >> it's not over. if anything, it will make us stronger. >> reporter: this is being -- beaing called "occupy cal" part of the broader "occupy wall

clara, kraig dequestion -- kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> a little competition going on there. thank you, kraig. the opening of a temporary ice rink is now on hold. the walnut creek on ice rink was scheduled to open tomorrow. but a problem with the ice is making that a problem. the rink has operated for the last six years during the holidays and have drawn shoppers downtown. i've been there. >> i've been there myself. it gets quite a bit of traffic. and speaking of traffic, sal, what's happening? >> the bay bridge toll plaza, backed up for about 20 minutes. the morning looks pretty good if you are driving into san francisco along northbound 101 or southbound 101. no major problems there.

basically we -- look, we've all been in it. i've done it on tv and radio. you want to say something, you just can't come up with it. the difference is when you or i do it, it's just a small deal. when he does it on the national tv stage in a presidential debate after a nare raw tiff has develop -- narrative has developed, he struggled. it can be a big deal. i'm not saying this is the end of the rick perry campaign. he still has a lot of money but this is not the -- this is not the kind of incident he needed. he got a lot of cheers from the crowd. mitt romney, sort of skating above everything. so the gop was shaken up a little bit by rick perry, and that might make "saturday night live" material if anything. back to you. >> thank you. disturbing new details are emerging about how the mortuary at dover air force base handled the remains of u.s. military

troops. alison burns is live this morning in our washington, d.c. newsroom with where some of those remains ended up. alison. >> reporter: this is a very emotional and gruesome story and it seems to be getting worse. now "the washington post" is reporting that the dover air force mortuary air force base disposed of individuals' for years. an air force investigation revealed gross mismanagement after three more rare -- mortuary employees blew the whistle. >> even those who came forward, every person there just like this is a sacred obligation -- just like every other person there, this is a sacred obligation. >> reporter: leon panetta says

the contra costa county police department is asking for help to find a man who tried to rob an individual. he's described as white, 45, 5'10" with shoulder-length hair and a goatee. the victim said he pulled over on arthur road on thursday last week and tried to pick up something by his car. at that point he said the man tried to rob him. the gun went off shattering windows. the victim was not hurt. this morning, caltrans opened up an extended carpool lane on southbound interstate 680. the carpool lanes are expected to shave about three minutes after the -- off the travel time between walnut creek and alamo. it can pretty -- it can get

pretty busy around that time. let's check in with sal. >> we're looking at that area because a lot of the slow traffic starts there. people are driving from antioch to pittsburg/bay point. a lot of people make the entire trip from antioch to the bay bridge. right now, we see a fair amount of slow traffic there in many of these areas with no major problems when it comes to crashes or stalled vehicles. we want to move the maps to the east shore freeway. you will see the traffic in pinole is going to be slow now. it really does slow down as you head westbound out towards the el cerrito area. we're also looking at the freeway here in hayward, we had an earlier crash on the dumbarton bridge eastbound near the toll plaza. that's really kind of a minor

issue now. there's about a 20, 25-minute delay at the toll plaza. this morning's commute on san jose, around the curve there is heavy. let's go to steve. good morning. 40s for some, 30s for others. patchy fog. mostly clear. it will be a day where we get higher clouds. the east wind continues for some which is really cold for ears. it's really warm. our observer in crockett says an east wind at 21 miles an hour with a windchill at 24. downtown oakland, 50. look at the system for tomorrow. it's looking weaker and weaker. i don't think it will do anything. along the coast we could see get some. 32, santa rosa. there's the 50 in oakland.

30 -- 7:29. in san jose, police are investigating a series of accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists. police are asking drivers to be more cautious. claudine wong joins us live from san jose and tell us just last night there were three accidents just minutes apart. claudine? >> reporter: that's right, tori. three minutes -- three accidents last night. five in the last few days. obviously very concerning this morning. we're at tully road and lanai. this is the one of one of the accidents. but there were actually two in the immediate area last night. one happened at 6:46 p.m. a 54-year-old man was cross

cross -- was crossing the road when he was hit. also on tully road, a 44-year- old was injured. this is video from jackson. you can see the remnants of flare still on the ground. that's where police say a 67- year-old woman was hit and killed last night as she crossed the street in the crosswalk. i talked to a woman last night. she said she heard about the accident and she's worried because she crosses that intersection every day. >> most of the cars -- >> reporter: you worry every time you cross? >> yeah. it's dark. i'm worried. >> reporter: back live out here on tully road and laini -- lanai. the total killed in san jose,

determined to stop them. back to you. in oakland, a shouting match erupted between occupy protesters and city and business leaders and police. [ chanting ] >> several city council members called a press conference to demand the encampment outside of frank ogawa plaza to be broken up. their message was drowned out by angry protesters. >> we're here -- [ inaudible due to shouting ] >> mayor quan said the camp at frank ogawa law za must be removed. police found a man shot around 11:00 last night at 34th

and magnolia. he was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. police are not saying what led up to the shooting and no arrests have been made. 7:32. ed lee is now claiming victory in the san bernardino mayor's race -- san francisco mayor's race after the latest elections show he's passed the required 50% park. he was 61% of the vote. john avalos has 38%. more than 38,000 ballots still need to be ballot -- counted. >> i want to thank the people of san francisco. it's wonderful -- it's wonderful to represent so many diverse communities and then to know that your work is welcomed. >> but john avalos says he's not yet read toy -- ready to concede. >> there are a lot of votes

that have not been counted. i think any candidate in his or her right mind would weight it out. >> the department of licenses say they -- says they will be tabulating the remaining volts by mail and the provisional ballots in the next few days. gorge cass gone -- george gascon is going to stay on as the city's district attorney. he has 64% of the vote faired to his opponent -- compared to his opponent. the race for san francisco's sheriff at this point is still undecided. ross mirkarimi is leading with 53%. the difference this votes is only 7,000. so it's still too close to call. overall, voter turn out in the bay area was low.

sam ballots are still being counted -- some ballots are still being counted. at this point, officials in alameda county are reporting a 27% turnout and in san mateo 22%. and officials say off-year elections frequently have turnout but this year's elections, even lower than they expected. last night, police confronted hundreds of angry protesters and students near the penn state campus and a student march turned into a student riot. we are live from the penn state campus. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. here on campus, the students are waking up to a new era. joe paterno is no locker head football comb and that -- coach and that did not go over well with students.

the dow is up 50. nasdaq is down 8. s&p is up 3. also helping the markets, a new report out this morning shows the number of people applying to jobless claims for the first time fell to its lowest number since april. applications for new unemployment insurance dropped 10,000 from the week before. it's the third time within four weeks initial claims are down. but applications need to be consistently lower than 375,000

to signal sustained job growth. and that has not happened since last february. it's a surprising turn in a bay area cold case. it involves a fugitive who has within on the run since the 1960s. pam cook's in the newsroom with more on this story. good morning, pam. >> good morning. he's eluded police for more than 40 years. now he says he wants to do the right thing. now, we're live outside the cut hours in redwood city where -- outsite side the court house -- outside the courthouse in redwood city where the suspect is expected there within the hour. now, bridgeforth has two grown children. his family says they knew nothing of his father's past but i wants be a better role model for them.

funeral services will be held on monday for a 14-year- old gunned down in a drive-by shooting. last night, 350 people attended a town hall meeting. they were there to seek answers about the shooting that killed her and wounded three other teenagers. her father was also at the meeting urging the community to come together against any illegal activity that may lead to violence. >> if your neighbor is doing

in front of sprowl hall. also some people in sleeping bags. everyone is being left alone. police are simply standing by here. a much different seen that we saw last night as police moved in to dismantle the tents set up here. officers used batons to push through a group of people forming a humane chain. we talked to -- human chain. we talked to one individual. >> i got involved in the chain. they were using batons and i got thrown to the ground by police. at that point, i decided i was here for the long stay. >> reporter: police say 40 people were arrested, one was a student and one was a pro ker -- professor. this is part of the broader "occupy wall street" movement.

accidents just last night. one happened at 6:46. a 54-year-old man was crossing the road when he was hit. seven minutes later, also on tally road, a 44-year-old cyclist was hit. both of those victims are fighting for their lives this morning. a few minutes before the accidents there was also a fatal accident on jackson. i want to show you video from the scene where you could still see the remnants from flairs on -- flares on the ground. a 67-year-old woman was walking across the crosswalk when she was hit and killed last night. i talked to a woman who said she did hear about the accident and was worried because she does cross that intersection every day. >> most of the cars they don't stop. >> reporter: so you worry every time you cross -- >> yeah. i'm worryied. >> reporter: back out here live on tully, the scene of one of

>> superjohn avilos says he's not yet ready to concede the race. >> there are a lot of votes that are left to count, like 30,000 is what i've been toll. a lot of those are votes that have not been counted. i think any candidate in his or her mind would wait it out. >> the department of elections says they will be taboo liting the results of the remaining vote-by mail and provisional ballots during the next few days. overall, voter turnout in the bay area for tuesday's election was low. some ballots are still being counted, so the numbers may go up slightly. but at this point, election officials in alameda county are reporting a 27% turnout, in san mateo county, 22%. in san francisco, 33%. election officials say off-year elections frequently have low turnouts but this year's election was even lower than they expected. 8:57. let's get another check in with sal. >> hey, mike and tori. right now. >> traffic is moving along
