complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu news at noon. an overnight tense standoff at the uc berkeley office. we start with breaking news, bodies found in a building in pittsburgh. police are on the scene now but we have very few details. the contra costa county coroner tells us the bodies were found in a building on jack less than done court -- london court. we are on our way there and we

are working our contacts to find out what has happened there. we will get new information for you and we will have an update before the end of this newscast. now to the showdown on the cal campus between "occupy" protesters and police. dozens of students defied an order to not camp out overnight. as part of our continuing coverage on the "occupy" protests, claudine wong joinings us -- joins us live to let us know what is happening now. >> reporter: very calm here as the business of the university gets underway. there is a small group of "occupy" protesters still on the steps up here. you can see they are clearing up their stuff getting out of the way. they have agreed to move out of the way. what you have not seen here is tents. there were tents overnight. a few tents this morning. a single tent for most of the morning but just about 90 minutes ago police moved in to take that tent away. our camera caught the scuffle

as police moved in to take one final tent off the plaza. you can see at one point a police officer ripping it away and moving away from the crowd. >> someone tried to defend it once it was being snatched and then about five or six cops swarmed around him and basically detained him. it just seemed like a very, you know, premature and really immature move on their part. >> reporter: that tent was the last tent in an attempt to occupy sprow plaza. it sat on the steps of the plaza and we watched as police went over to ask protesters to put it away. at about 10:30 police decided to take it but even as a protester was taken away, the angry crowd followed. >> shame on you, shame on you. >> reporter: this all followed a crackdown overnight when police moved in to clear up the plaza what had been filling since midday yesterday. a sergeant told us that almost

40 people arrested after refusing to leave. the university has said the crowd could stay as long as they didn't bring tents, didn't use amplifiers, don't have -- didn't have fires and didn't try to sleep there. protesters brought tents anyway and police came in twice overnight to clear everyone out. so you're taking a live look at what is left of the "occupy" cow encampment that was here, some cord board, some sleeping material, this seems like a line is going to be drawn at these tents at sleeping bags at sleepingover night here. they are going to try to gather up a crowd for this evening. live, claudine wong. >> thank you. oakland police are investigating a late night shooting in west oakland. police found a man shot around 11:00 last night near 34th street and magnolia. he was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. police are not saying what led up to the shooting. no arrests have been made. details of a federal raid

are being released at this hour in a joint news conference with the oakland police department and the u.s. marshal service. ktvu has exclusive video of the aftermath of the early tuesday morning raid on a house in the oakland hills. a federal official says the investigation involved firearms and illegal narcotics. we have a crew at the press conference and we will have more on ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00. a fugitive who has been at large for 40 years surrendered this morning in san mateo county. ronald bridgeforth was taken into custody in redwood city. kraig debro joins us live to explain why he turned himself in after all these years. good afternoon. >> reporter: govern. both sides have a theory on that. ronald bridgeforth as you said stopped running and turned himself into the san mateo county jail this morning but why would a father of two, a man with two master's degrees and a college counselor do that? because before 67-year-old

ronald bridgeforth was any of those things, his attorneys said he shot it out with police officers in 1968. appearing with his attorney this morning outside the courthouse, bridgeforth says he will plead guilty in his role in the gun battle. he says his family was one of the reasons bridgeforth made his decision. >> well, this seems to be the right thing to do and in the end it's always about family. >> reporter: what do you mean? >> no, let's just go on. he's taking responsibility for his actions. he wants to be a model for his sons. he wants his sons to continue to be proud of him, for the man that he is today and not on that day of november 5th, 1968. >> we are ready to do business with him again. if he doesn't want to plead guilty, we have the witnesses available to testify. they have a memory of this event, a very clear memory of this event. i spoke to one of them

yesterday and we would be ready to proceed. >> reporter: this is ronald bridgeforth in 1968, in november of that year south san francisco police stopped him and two other men in a car on el camino real. the officers suspected the men were trying to use stolen credit cards. bridgeforth jumped out of the back seat and fired at the officers. the local assistant district attorney says bridgeforth pleaded guilty the following year but then jumped bail. three years later he was one of nine men accused of killing a san francisco police officer. the men belonged to the black liberation front, the blf was formed by former black panther members who believed the movement was too soft. bridgeforth shot up the ingleside station. it was more than an assault, though. officer john lynch day. bridgeforth -- he says that's why bridgeforth is turning himself in and not for any

higher moral purpose. >> i think there are a lot of reasons that one might show up after 42 years, perhaps one of them being that the san francisco homicide has gone away. >> reporter: the chief deputy district attorney says bridgeforth could be in court next month to enter a plea. reporting live in redwood city, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. san jose police are investigating a number of accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists. at 63:00 yesterday even a -- evening a car struck a woman while she was crossing jackson avenue. she later died. two people are hospitalized from separate incidents on tellee road. two other accidents this week killed a pedestrian and bicyclist. this morning a woman who living on the avenue says the intersection can be dangerous. >> most of the cars sometimes

>> he says he is not ready to concede the race. >> there are a lot of votes that are left to count, like 31 to 35,000. >> i've been told a lot of those have first -- i think any candidate would wait it out. >> the department of elections says they will be tabulating the results of the remaining vote by mail and provisional ballots over the next few days. in another san francisco race george cassgun cascone has been the city's police chief and appointed da at the beginning of the year. however, the race for san francisco sheriff is at this point undecided. ross is leading with 53%, paul me moto -- miamoto is in

second. overall voter turnout in the bay area for tuesday's election was low. some ballots are still being counted so the numbers may go up slightly but at this point election officials in alameda county are reporting a 27% turnout. in san mateo county 22% and in san francisco 33%. election officials say off-year elections frequently have low turnouts but that this year's election was even lower than they expected. a new report out today shows a number of people applying for first time jobless benefits last week fell to its lowest level since april. the labor department says new applications for unemployment dropped to 390,000. that's down 10,000 from the week before. it is the third time in four weeks that initial claims fell. however, economists say applications actually need to stay below 375,000 to signal sustained job growth. that has not happened since

last february. job seekers lined up this morning for a job fair at the oakland coliseum. more than 70 employers set up booths seeking to fill open positions. the fair also included workshops on how to effectively use the internet in the job hunt as well as resume reviews and critiques. the event was organized by among others congresswoman barbara lee and officials from the city of oakland. this morning rick perry sold the associated press he is not ending otherwise presidential run despite last -- his presidential run despite last night's embarrassing gasp at last night's presidential debate. >> commerce, education and the -- what's the third one there? let's see. >> perry repeatedly could not name the third cabinet level agency he would eliminate if elected president. it was the department of energy. afterwards he tweeted he's glad he wore his boots because he stepped in it.

trustees, by rod erickson to handle this. >> for the first time in 46 years penn state has a new football coach, tom bradley was named interim coach last night and be on the sideline for saturday's modem game against nebraska. he had been penn state's defensive coordinator under joe paterno. the contra costa county sheriff's department has a new tool to find a gunman who tried to rob a man along interstate 680 near pa chafeo -- pacheco. the sketch is released today, described as a white man, 45 years old, 5'10" with shoulder length hair and a black goatee. the victim said he pulled over near arthur road last thursday to pick up something on the other side of his car. at that point he says the man walked up and tried to rob him. anyone with information is asked to call police. some good news for carpoolers in the east bay. this morning caltrans opened up an extended carpool lane on southbound interstate 680 between red gear and la

southerna -- lavorna road. it is expected to shave about three minutes off the travel time between walnut creek and alamo. today the california supreme court is hearing arguments about whether the state has the right to eliminate 400 local redevelopment agencies. cities and counties say the state is raiding their could have in other words -- coffers in violation of state law. the move will save california $2 billion a year. local governments use the funds to pay for critical projects. the morgan hill unified school district has won a legal victory in its controversial decision last year ordering students to remove their american flag t-shirts. you may remember the incident on sink demya -- senko demaio -- cinco de mayo. three families sued claiming the school's actions violated

first amendment rights. school attorneys say this week a district court judge dismissed all claims. homeless advocates in san jose are hoping to help people stay warm during the winter months. members of the community homeless alliance ministry were in downtown yesterday handing out hundreds of blankets. the pastor of the ministry recently started a campaign urging the homeless to take over empty buildings for shelter. and after a cool morning, temperatures are beginning to recover this afternoon. taking our live look outside towards san francisco, currently checking in 63 degrees, bit of haze, but mostly sunny skies, things changing tomorrow. no rain drops detected here with our live sweep, but by this time tomorrow there will be a few showers at least approaching parts of the bay area. forecast headlines for tonight, we do actually for today we do have this, not tonight just yet

calm the market today. also the drop in first time claims for job loss is boosting confidence. dow is at 11,881. the nasdaq is fairly positive, up about a half point. s&p up eight. eddie murphy is pulling out as host of the academy awards. he made the announcement yesterday after his friend, bret ratner reside. rat ner was supposed to produce the upcoming oscars but he stepped down after using a gay slur during an interview. the academy has yet to announce who will replace murphy. the show is set for february, 26th. we now have more information on our breaking news out of contra costa county. four bodies found in a home in pittsburg. we have just spoken to police and here's what happened. police responded to the home on jack london court earlier this morning where a suicidal man was holed up. they couldn't contact him so they went into the home where they found four bodies, all adults. police believe it was a murder-
