oakland faces, they don't want their officers in the frontline at risk for nothing. >> reporter: you are looking live from chopper 2. this is the martha just left the plaza just about a minute ago. it marches -- it's new new here lately and the people who respond for mutual aid with the city are starting to rethink that response. i talked to a spokesperson from richmond and from alameda and they basically say they are rethinking the response because of the cost and because it there doesn't seem to be any stated end game and they cleared out this camp and them let them come back to make it bigger stronger. if the city needs help they will have to pay other agencies to help them. reporting live. >> and let's go out to paul chambers who has the latest on the protesters marching right now. >> reporter: they have taken broadway street.

we can see traffic stopped here behind us there. is no traffic coming down the street because -- we come to the other side. people have started marching down broadway. we have left 14th. they are going down toward the pair moment. we are walking with them. they say it's about a protest for veterans, about a protest for police brutality. you may remember there are two people that are veterans that took part of the protest who were hurt by police. that part of this protest. you can see there are more than a hundred people. excuse my breathing as i walk with them. walking down the streets of oakland like i said. they decided to leave city hall. they started walking down broadway. cars on both sides as you can see are at a stand still. nobody is able to move. nobody is able to go anywhere but the people are still taking over the streets, of course we will stay on top of this and bring you the latest and as it develops. live in oakland.

paul chambers, ktvu channel 2news. >> the mayor is facing mounting criticism for her handling of the protest. >> i think she believed she could negotiate with the folks to get them to voluntarily leave the plaza. >> reporter: we talked to city leaders about the crisis and how it could affect the political landscape. we will have that coming up at 5:30. >> protesters in salt lake city have until tomorrow to clear out after a protester was found dead in his tent. a 42-year-old known as mike was found about ten this morning. it's not clear why or how he died but temperatures dropped below freezing and police say he may have died from the use of a small propane heater or perhaps a drug overdose. the police chief said the camp is a public safety concern and people who don't leave by tomorrow will be arrested. >> more outrage over police response to the protest. today the lawyers for two people hit by a car during the strike are calling for the

arrest of the driver. you may remember this video from november 2nd. the driver of a mercedes hits one person and then backs up and hits another person. the victim had serious injuries. in a press conference attorneys for the victim say that bart police let the driver go without a citation, didn't collect evidence from the crime scene and haven't talked to witnesses. >> with the help of the citizens of oakland we are going to bring this man to justice, hold this man responsible, open if the police will not do their job. >> reporter: bart police say they were directed to let the driver go by oakland police and that opd is investigating. we have crews monitoring the protest, the coverage will continue on the website. log onto the website for all the latest on the move the protesters making. >> in the rain coming down today throughout the bay area.

widely scattered showers moving from the south and going north. that's unusual. let's go outside. it was raining in china town. now despite the feel that the rain was coming down pretty heavy the accumulations are just about a tenth of an inch. going now to the next camera and you will see the downtown san francisco. umbrellas out, slowing it down. people -- some had a holiday today and others still at work. then on the freeways and the afternoon you can see what's happened. we have 80 here by emoryville. headlights toward san francisco. that's slow. both ways because of the rain and perhaps because of the holiday. first thing i want to point our you can see the coverage from oakland, richmond and san rafael. the oranges normally would show heavy rain but it's moderate to light rain. sometimes the radar does this.

. live pictures tonight of the occupy oakland protesters about 200 of them marching through downtown oakland. they are at 9th and broadway. they are marching in part to honor the two war veterans who were injured in earlier protests. you will recall one of them suffered serious internal injuries, another a wound to his head. now despite the rain, despite the cold and despite calls for them to leave the camp site, it appears they aren't going away and that's turning in to a huge problem for the mayor. there is a recall effort underway and she is facing criticism pretty much from all sides. patty lee is here now and tells you that criticism is also coming loud and clear from members of the oakland city council. >> reporter: that's right. the city council president said that the fact it took a deadly

lobby building of the oakland police department. this is a live picture and we see several police officers all in their gear and -- we see a lot of what appear to be protesters. these are members of the same group that was marching leading from civic center around downtown oakland. past the fox theater and back it appears inside opd headquarters, paul chamber social security on the scene. let's bring new and you tell us what you see. >> reporter: we are actually at the intersection of 7th and broadway. they are taking -- the outside of -- around this corner. the protesters walked up from 14th and broadway. made a left. came down telegraph and straight to the police department. you can see about eight officers standing outside oakland police department, guarding the front door and as you can see we can go to the left you can see the people are talking, these are veterans who are asking the police to stop beating veterans.

that's in reference to the two injured during occupy oakland. there is about 200 people. its been a peaceful situation. no problems, there were issues with traffic for a while but that of course as it moved away traffic wassable to open up. we are standing out here at 7th and broadway right in front of the entrance of opd. there is about seven or eight officers in riot gear here at attention. there is been no problems, no problem was the veterans, the protesters or the police. they are just standing guard as a standoff to people are letting their words be hard. they wanted to come out and let the police know how they feel and what's going on and as i said there is about 200 people here just giving reports, testimony about what is going on with oakland police and occupy oakland. we will stay with this and bring the latest. we will continue to march with

>> we all are busy, get lazy,. >> we are proud of what san francisco has done with them. >> reporter: san francisco recycling 76,000 pounds of them every year, most picked up from 30 drop off locations. >> we are doing a lot of outreach to try to help people understand that they require special handling and we are trying to make it as convenient as possible for people to do the right thing. >> reporter: the used cfl's are packed shipped to the only facility in northern california licensed to take the mercury out. >> the white coating here, that's the mercury powder. >> reporter: to take it out, they feed the bulbs into this machine. the powder is then packed in to large drums. >> surprisingly we do not see that many cfl's yet. >> reporter: he believes so few are recycled because of a lack
