after weeks of controversy, police move in and clear out the much-debated occupy protest camp near oakland city hall. reaction to that is the top story. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. now that occupy oakland's main encampment has been disbanded, the cleanup process is underway. it's a big job. christian kafton has reaction

from business owners but we begin with kraig debro this afternoon. kraig? >> reporter: we're at the west side of frank ogawa plaza. you can see the progress city workers have been maybing in cleaning up the -- up the plaza. police say there will be a heavy presence to prevent people from sleeping here, not from speaking here. as the mayor briefed the public, the moved in. they found this man hiding. >> this is my home. this is my house. >> reporter: by midmorning, police arrested 32 people. just nine of them with oakland addresses. >> you are under arrest. >> the encampment became a place of violence and one murder. >> assaults, beatings, were made over the last two weeks. >> reporter: occupy oakland began over a month ago.

it sur po to draw attention to the inequities in the political and economical system. now it's costing the cities hundreds of thousands of dollars. >> we will be under contract with alameda sheriff's to be reimbursed from those costs. >> reporter: police are calling the camp at frank ogawa plaza a crime scene. some campers are not giving up so easily. late this morning, a handful briefly blocked the intersection of 14th and broadway. even though people can't sleep at frank ogawa plaza, the chief says they can speak there any time they desire. >> there is no curfew there. it's a public place. it's just like standing on the cover of 14th and broadway. >> that's why city workers are cleaning up the plaza. the city want this finished

this afternoon so the speakers can start using their first amendment rights. back to you. >> thank you kraig. police set up barricades -- barricades to keep people out of frank ogawa plaza. several shouted and jeered. no one threw anything. officers did not use tear gas or flash grenades. some occupiers say they are glad today's events were more peaceful. >> i am glad violence was not use. obviously -- was not used. obviously somebody was thinking about it and said this cannot happen again. >> police arrested 14, a group from an interface ministry, a

group that sent up the a tent -- sent up a tent and they stayed on the property after police gave the order to move out. some oakland residents heard the police were were stabling at the coliseum and -- staging at the coliseum and they tweeted all night. >> i think it plays a huge hart. they say they don't agree with the -- >> they say they don't agree with the election from frank ogawa plaza. we're learning more about the man shot and killed at the encampment. his name is coyote foster of oakland, 25 years old. police say foster had been staying at the camp for a few days before he was shot and introduced himself as campers

-- as alex to campers. oakland police are offering a $10,000 right ward leading to an arrest in this case. now that the site has been cleared. some stores and residents are breathing a -- a big sigh of relief. christien kafton has more on the changes the businesses are seeing. >> reporter: right now, take a look. you can see this tully's here, the doors are still closed at this hour. the mayor told some businesses to delay opening today. many seemed to hear the message and opened late. for the second day, the protesters were kicked out. some business owners told me they are happy they are gone

because they hurt business. one individual saided about was steady but he says they are -- said the business was steady but they are seeing an uptick this morning. >> usually in the 30 minutes we don't get much business. but for some reason we did this time. >> reporter: that's one of the businesses that benefited from the movement. protesters regularly stopped in for water and snacks, he says, and he says he sympathizes with their movement but also understands why they had to go. >> yes, we do sympathize with them. we are 100% with them. some people complain about the business about the -- they are right. it makes their business slow. >> reporter: early this move, oakland city administrators said complaints from businesses weighed into their decision to remove the encampment. >> i have received a number of communications from the business community that they have been impacted by a loss of

revenue from this. >> reporter: now, looking around the area, you can see the area around frank ogawa plaza is buzzing right now. businesses say they will be watching closely to see if the occupiers move back in after the police leave. we're live, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. some protesters from frank ogawa plaza have been making their way up to another area. snow park, and 19th and lakeside drive has been growing over the weekend. this weekend we saw people growing and shifting their tents around to make room for more. >> we've been working with some of the occupiers at snow park. that doesn't mean that snow park is not gonna be removed. it just won't be removed today. >> snow park, next to lake merritt -- lake merritt, is a

city-owned park. we're now hearing from the iraq veteran who was hit by an october in the head during a demonstration. he was released from the hospital last week. yesterday, he posted a photo on his google-plus account along with miss first public statement since being injured. he says -- san francisco police are continuing their search for two people who attacked officers during a weekend occupy sf march. officials say the first officer was trying to keep demonstrators out of the street when a woman slashed his hand. the second officer was hurt while chasing a protester who had taken his radio. that's when another protester pushed the officer and cut his face and tore his uniform. both officers were treated and

released at the scene. police made two arrests at the occupy sebastopol camp during a routine last night. police say both men are transients with outstanding warrants related to drug and theft cases. they were taken into custody without incident. uc berkeley police are investigatinthdepartment's response to last week's occupy cal protest. the university police chief says he's interviewing witnesses and reviewing video of wednesday's violent clash between officers and students to see if excessive force was used. he's also using the incident to decide if pepper spray and tear gas should be used in future demonstrations. and this was the scene over the weekend in portland, oregon. police in riot gear forced

state farm. a california patrol officer who was shot after a routine traffic stop on highway 99 is recovering from surgery at this hour. we first told you about last night's shooting near sacramento on "mornings on 2." police say the driver shot the chp officer in the wrist and in the hip. and after a brief chase with local police, the suspect flipped his car in a ditch. when the suspect refused to show his hands, police fired two shots into the car, killing him. caltrans is scrambling to reassure the public that their more than $600 billion invest

wounded. five suspected gang members are under arrest in the shooting. a man has died after being hit by a san francisco muni bus. police say the pedestrian was run over by the 14 mission bus just after noon on fifth and mission street. his right leg was pinned under the wheel. emergency crews freed the man and took him to the hospital but he later died. the driver has been placed on paid leave, spending -- pending an investigation. one of the founders of the social networking site has died. the san francisco medical examiner's office confirms 22- year-old ilia is dead. no word when or how he died. he's an alternative to facebook founded last year by four new york universities students -- new york university students. the white house is pleased that the supreme court will hear arguments over president obama's healthcare over haul and it says it's consecutive --

overhaul and is confident the law will be upheld. federal appeals courts have been split. arguments could come in march allowing plenty of time for a decision in late june, just four months before election day. and the president of the charity linked to the penn state child sex abuse scandal has resigned. they've launched an internal investigation. former penn state coach jerry sandusky founded the second mile and is accused of sexually abusing children he met through the charity. he's out on bail and the a -- and a judge has ordered him to stay away from children but he lives next to an elementary school and neighbors are upset. >> i think we like to believe in presumption of innocence but i think there's a level of protection that a neighborhood and community is entitled to.

>> reporter: private property signs have done up on sandusky's lawn after police say someone threw a cinder -- cinderblock through his window. air travelers can expect full flights this upcoming thanksgiving. even though fewer people are predicted to fly. 23.2million people are expected to fly which is less than last year but there will be few empty seats because airlines are reducing the number of flights to offset costs. and if you are looking for cheaper airfares for the holidays, timing is everything. travelzoo says it's best to buy about four weeks out when prices tend to dip. if you can wait until the week you want to leave, airlines often release money-saving deals on tuesday to fill empty seats for that same week and some airlines provide exclusive deals through sites like twitter and facebook. good afternoon to you.

today. wednesday we start to drop off just a little bit. we are still in good shape. that's when we expect the possibility of light rain moving in late friday into saturday going to be cold, going to be soggy. it looks like we'll get a break on saturday. but another second storm roms in saturday night into sunday. when i say cold, it looks like by sunday snow levels could be down to 1500 feet. >> wow. wily have to bundle up. >> yes. >> okay. thank you. new developments late this morning have put the upcoming pro basketball season in serious jeopardy. nba players rejected the latest contract offer after meeting with tale owners. kobe bryant and carmel though anthony were there for the negotiations. the nba called for a 72-game season beginning december 17th but players called the plan extremely unfair, saying it two limit their free agent options. they also began steps to disband their union.

largest ever placed. it is a big week in the plan to build a new home for the 49ers in santa clara. tomorrow the city council was expected to approve $10 million to bid a 65,000-square foot stadium of if all goes as planned -- stadium. if all goes as planned, construction would begin in 2013 and theers would play their first game two years later -- and theers would play -- 9ers would play their first game two years later. sub stole a sword from abraham lincoln and tomb. lincoln, his wife and sons are buried in the tomb. we're keeping a close eye on the developments today with the occupy protests.
