houston we'll -- "mornings on 2" starts now. good morning. welcome it "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. topping our news, a campus showdown at uc berkeley. right now, dozens of protesters are gathered outside of sproul plaza. there's quite a few people out there, even some tents. these protesters are being closely watched by police officers who have wanted therm repeatedly to pack up their tents and leave. this moving's standoff follows a huge occupy cal protest that at one point, involved as many as 10,000 students and occupy activists. the situation here this morning

is changing by the minute. ktvu's claudine wong is watching both police and protesters and she will have a live update from this scene coming up in 30 minutes. meanwhile, occupy san francisco's attempt to expand ended overnight. ktvu's kraig debris joins us live from -- kraig debro joins us live from san francisco and says police removed more than a dozen sites near the occupy site. >> reporter: good morning. the mad earn told me there were -- the commander told me there were 15 sites. they raided the encampment. seven people cited, three people yeted -- arrested. the reason for the raid last night was actually overcrowding. you see, that's the main encampment occupy san francisco, justin herman plaza. but because they got so big, they started to send people down here, the market down here, the sidewalk is open. that's a new development. they call that section the

bridge because it loosely link, the justin herman plaza encampment with the one in front of the federal building at 101 market street. reaction was swift. police say they've been warning people sleeping on the bridge that the encampment was blocking the sidewalk. occupy sf admits they have received warnings of the illegal cam. police said they arrived here with one mission -- to remove thants it -- to remeasure the tents. that's it -- to remove the tents. that's it. seven people were arrested. >> we came in and removed the 15 tents set up there. >> there's some panic. but when we think about it, talk to each other, we realize we are unique in san francisco and hopefully we'll do things a different way here. >> reporter: now, one of the reasons that occupy sf is a

setup raid, they say they have a meeting tomorrow afternoon to talk with ed lee about expansion. one of the people i talked with said this sort of kills the spirit of agreeability heading into that meeting tomorrow. one more thing, the sidewalk, i just want to remind everybody is open. i know a lot of people get off the ferry and they come here to go to work. earlier this morning that sidewalk had been closed. it's now open. reporting live from san francisco, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, kraig. overnight in oakland, police arrested a military veteran who had been camped out in front of the building as part -- memorial building. by were there as he was released -- we were there as he was released about an hour ago. >> it's not that there's conflict. i just want peace. i don't want -- i just want to sleep without anybody bothering

me. >> it makes me angry because our veterans literally give their lives for us, whether they lose their lives or not. once they join the military, they sign their lives over. >> benjamin hanks says he and some other veterans have been camped out in front of the veterans memorial building in oakland for several days. he says he was arrested when he refused to leave. stay with us for continuing coverage of the occupy protests. you can go to ktvu.com any time for the latest. 7:05. the academy coroner is trying to -- the alameda coroner is trying to determine why a-year- old -- 4-year-old boy from stockston died during a medical procedure in oakland. christien kafton is live with the details. >> reporter: good morning. i tried to get in contact with the family of jermaine harrison in stockton just about 15 minutes ago. so far, i've not heard back from them. now, the family brought the boy

here to children's hospital's research center in oakland on friday to have some teeth removed and other teeth capped. the family says he was put under anesthesia and never came out of it. the 4-year-old was born with a hole in his heart and had to have open-heart surgery and a pacemaker as an infant. they brought him here for the dental procedure. a nurse toll them he was given gas and never should have been due to his condition. >> the doctor checked out pacemaker out and his heart and said everything was find. he had no -- was fine. he had no liquid or fluid around the heart. he had nothing wrong with him. >> reporter: now. hospital said the boy was not overanesthetized. the hospital was not ruled out the child's heart condition as a possible cause of death.

the alameda county coroner is examining and an autopsy report should be available in about a month. and we're going to reach out to the family to see if they have heard anything from the hospital about little jermaine's death. christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, christien. police in mountain view searching for a man accuse of sexually harassing a housekeeper at the tropmy can na. police say the man asked for the 49-year-old housekeeper to come into his room to see something. buns inside, he allegedly hugged, kissed and exposed himself to her. eventually she was able to push him away and get away. police are not sure if the man rented the room is the attacker. we want too to -- we want to check in with sal.

>> there's a new crash on the peninsula. southbound 101 at willow road, just north of it here. it's so knew new -- it's so new that the chp system doesn't have it up there yet. it would be right around here. be careful with that. we will get you -- lert you know. i don't think the chp is there yet. maybe they are just trying to confirm that it actually is there. we'll let you know. let's move the maps to the south bay. there was a bus on fire and that fire is out. no one was hurt but the bus is on the shoulder and that offramp from 6 0 northbound to calaveras is tell -- 680 northbound to calaveras is tempo rare rarely closed -- temporarily closed. just up the road it slows down. the coliseum is fine. and the westbound bay bridge, you can see that traffic is backed up, moderate delay.

fog is definitely increased on the coast and also around the bay. so that means a little bit cooler pattern. inland will still be in the mid- 60s but closer to the coast and bay, upper 50s and low 60s turning much colder tomorrow. a tragic accident in china involving an overloaded minibus filled with little children, that's causing outrage across china. at least 18 kindergarteners and two adults were killed when their bus crashed head on with a bus in western china. authorities say the minibus had nine seats but it was jammed with 62 children. critics say that crash highlights all of the problems with an underfunded education system in some of the rural areas of china. well, the chp back here at home wants your help this morning. they are investigating a grim

mystery. a mother of two young children was found dead along interstate 680 in contra costa county. the body of 47-year-old roma batiaa was found south of bullinger road saturday night. she had been hit by a car or a truck. no one stopped. investigators hope someone will come forward with information. here's her photo. they also want to know more details about what happened on that road. 7:16. security, a lot tighter in washington, d.c. after two bullets were recovered from the extear year of the white house. the see -- exterior of the white house. the secret service is still investigating to find out if what happened on friday night, where the bullets came from -- came from. one of the bullets hit a window, but that window was specially protected by special glass. police recovered and assault rifle friday night. however, the suspect a 21-year- old man, is still somewhere on

the loose. police still don't know if he had a specific target when he was firing those shots. 7:16. democrats are calling on president obama to issue a veto threat today as the u.s. house prepares to pass a bill to make it easier for people to carry concealed weapons across state lines. but as alison burns reports, critics say it will ultimately weaken gun laws here in california and across the country. alison? >> reporter: that's right. republicans have tried to for years to pass this bill. today it looks like they -- it looks like they have their best shot. supporters say this ends confusion about how and where you can carry a gun. >> any time you make it easier for law-abiding citizens to carry firearms, it's good news for gun owners and bad news for criminals. >> authorities say the strict requirements for getting a

permit in california would basically be lenderred -- rendered obsolete by the legislation. it's expected to clear the house. it's unclear what will happen in the democratic-controlled senate. reporting live from washington, d.c., alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. all right, alison. thank you. the veterans job bill is expected to pass in the house. this bill is expected to provide businesses who hire veterans financial help. the senate passed the bill last week by a 95-0 vote. one week left before the deadline. >> the congressional super- committee says they are deadlocked. gop feels like they have gone as far as they can on tax hikes. if they don't come to an

agreement, 600 billion would be lost. a u.s. postal service wants to hear of the public's plans -- wants to hear the public's opinions about closing two postal offices of the postal service says relocating their work to oakland could save $2.5 million every year. a hearing will be held at the pet rue ma hearing facility and starts at 6:00 p.m. meanwhile, the u.s. postal service says it cost $5 billion despite deep job cuts. the postal service faces a deadline to pay $5.5 billion into a fund. congress is expected to delay that payment but postal officials expect to run out of money by next september. they say that would stop all service and private companies would only be able to pick up a small portion of the mail

handled by the u.s. postal service. republican presidential candidate, newt gingrich, is fielding questions about reports that he was paid as a lobbyist for the mortgage company freddie mac. according to bloomberg, gingrich made between 1.6 and $1.8 million in consulting fees from two contracts with freddie mac. but gingrich said he only provided advice to the mortgage firm and that he was not a lobbyist. >> that's just not true. i have never lobbied. >> can you describe what you did? >> there were no contracts at any time. we were always clear about that. how's that? >> since din grip's contracts with freddie mac ended in twa -- gingrich's contracts ended with freddie mac ended in 2008, he's been a critic of the program. rick perry said if elected, he would end lifetime appointments for federal judges. he also said he would slash the pay for federal lawmakers,

effectively turning congress into a part-time institution. perry says congress is out of touch because lawmakers are overpaid, overstaffed and away from home too much. 7:20. well, secretary of state, hillary clinton shows she can life at life's funny moments. take a look at what happened during a photo-op in hawaii. anti-trust lawsuits filed by nba players against the league means all eyes will be on an oakland federal courtroom. u.s. man straight judge donna rio was assigned to hear the case by the u.s. district court of northern california. oakland flightive leon poe and four other players are listed as plaintiffs. plaintiffs filed suit in minnesota but his attorney wants both matters to be heard in northern california. the league canceled came through december 15th. december 15th -- canceled games through december 15th. a record number of californians are leaving the state and moving to texas. according to census figures,

more than 3,000 moved to texas in the past five years. 70,000 picked up and left in 2010 alone. the experts say historically there's been a lot of back-and- forth movement between california and texas but some people say right now the economy seems to be better in texas, with more jobs and cheaper rent. >> as they say, don't mess with texas. 7:24. let's check in with sal keeping a close eye on the commute. >> all right, tori and dave, we do have slow traffic in many spots now. this is the heart of the morning commute. traffic on 80 westbound is busy. some of that fog is moving through. got some streets with that -- about that. i know steve's twitter is probably blow up. there are no problems on 580 and 80 but very slow traffic at the bay bridge toll plazale we had an earlier stalled vehicle up -- toll plaza. we had an earlier stalled

right now, several protesters remain at sproul plaza. they've received several record from the police to leave. claudine wong joins us live from the scene. it looks like the orders are being ignored. >> reporter: the protesters say they are staying, they are keeping their tents here.

they consider it free speech, part of their movement to stay in front of this administration building here at sproul plaza. there are more than a dozen spent tents that are up along the steps here in front of sproul hall. you can see people taking their time sitting -- i talked to protesters out here who say look, they thought sometime in the night police would come in and clear out their tents. that did not happen despite repeated warnings from police that they either had to leave or they could face arrest. i talked to one protester about how he feels about making it through the night. he insists he's not going anywhere. >> we start to worry when they put on riot gear and gas masks because that means they are gonna tear gas students protesting. the violence the police have used is inexcusable. it's not that they are bad people. they are being told to do bad things. >> reporter: so we've watched on two different occasions police come out here and give two warnings. one warning happened a 2:00 --

happened at 2:00 another one at 5:00 and another one at 5:30. when we come out here live, you can see the business of the way getting underway. crews are out here cleaning up the plaza. take a look at kroys the play -- take a look at the plaza and you can see the number of officers on standby. the indications from that one protester who said he doesn't think anything is gonna happen, one, the traffic coming through here -- [ no audio ] >> reporter: at thin po -- at this point, it's still a holding pattern. the police said they are not gonna tell us what their plans are. we will say in the past we've been criticized for not giving

them enough warning. we'll watch things here and check back for -- and have more later. it appears the suspect shot on the cal campus had no connection to okay pie cal protests -- occupy cal protests. the shooting happened near memorial stadium. a man was spotted in the elevator carrying a gun in his backpack. the police shot and wounded the man after he pulled out the gun in the computer lab. >> the officers challenged the individual to drop the firearm. he did not. and the officers were forced to have to fire on the individual. >> the unidentified man is still at oakland's highland hospital. investigators say they still don't know why he brought a gun to the business school andis -- it's still not clear if he is a student. 7:33. only a handful of protesters remain at occupy oakland and frank ogawa plaza as the city cleans up the area.

take a look at new video. the city is out there power washing and cleaning. the city is planning on resodding the grass where people have been camped out. it will cost around $30,000 to do it. city officials say the occupy protesters can use the plaza for cities and rallies. but they are no longer allowed to set up tents and campout overnight. >> it's not over. this is huge. it's monumental. i'm proud of myself and everyone who is involved. i'm not sure who is dash what's coming up next, but it's good -- >> there's still a police presence as you can see, just to make sure no camps are set up out there. 7:24. new this morning, families living in a san jose mobile home park say they are fed up with bad living conditions out there. residents in san jose community -- and community leaders have

called a news conference for outside the western trailer park on monterey highway at 11:00 this morning. they say park management is not repairing sewage and other problems in a timely manner. the park's owner told the mercury news she's spending $15,000 in the past year upgrading the sewer system. today the california legislative analysts office will release its latest revenue report which could indicate whether more state budget cuts are needed. if the revenue forecast calls short by more than $1 billion, it will trigger automatic cuts. those cuts would affect universities, developmental services and in-home support for seniors and the disabled. if revenue calls short by more than $2 billion, school funding could face further cuts. csu students are bracing for another round of tuition fee hikes. this morning, csu trustees will decide whether to raise tuition by 9%. coming up at 7:45, what could

help the 23 campus system avoid tuition hikes next year. 7:35. a strange story. a santa clara county man has been charged with killing a bobcat and then eating it. 38-year-old henry arnabel was arrested november 7th. investigators say he shot a bob cat, skinned it and ate it after it attacked five of his roosters. prosecutors say he's not really in trouble for eating the bobcat. eating a bobcat is not against the law. but it is against the law to kill one. 7:36. well, sentencing is set for today for a sonoma state stunt texting pea hind the wheel when she hit and killed a toddler. 1-year-old kaitlynn dunnaway has pleaded no con toast to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charges steming from that ins tent -- from that

incident. 2-year-old callie murray died. callie's mother was seriously hurt. 7:36. a sonoma county firefighter has pleaded guilty to em baezleing -- embezzling money. michael becktold is accused of taking more than $63,000 from the firefighters union. police say he spent the money on housing, shark season tickets and a trip to disneyland. he faces up to three years in jail. a man released under the -- under california's new medical parole program is back in custody. the department of corrections and rehabilitation ordered convicted burglar, peter post, back into custody, after he committed a lewd act as at a -- a lewd act at a nursing home. a parole board will have to decide whether to revoke his parole. the law pass was designed to save the state millions of dollars by releasing those inmates to those facilities.

city officials have been considering banning from people from living in their cars. the city is now looking at alternate idea, among them is an ordinance that would designate certain parking lots for people to live inside their cars. well, the -- well, the a.c. transit board will hold a public hearing today about its plan to cut a major bus route. that proposal covers express service over the dumbarton bridge between union city and palo alto. it two eliminate dd-3 on december 13th. it would reduce trips on db and db-1. that meeting, by the way is at 4:00 p.m. at the a.c. headquarters in oakland. 7:3. we want to check -- 7:38. weigh want too economic in with sal -- we want to check in with sal. >> hey, tori. you probably won't be surprised when i tell you there are a lot

7:41. groundbreaking for the 49ers' stadium is getting closer and closer to happening. the city council unanimously approved allocating $10 million to prepare a city-owned parking lot for stadium construction. $4million will come from the city's redevelopment fund and the 49ers are lending the rest. we're 100% committed to having the stadium at santa clara. we believe the city has responded as well. >> in january, crews will be getting the lot next to great america ready for construction for the 68,000-feet stadium. santa clara's city manager says if the project falls through, the city would have the site ready for other redevelopments. a confession from facebook. the activities it's been tracking for months by both members and nonmembers of the social networking site. ened at penn state coach who played -- and the penn state coach who played a key role in revealing the sexual

stocks are down since the price of oil dropped. there's still concerns about europe's debt crisis. the problem may start to spread to european nations. the dow is back above 12,000. the nasdaq is down 13. s&p down, 8. google is expected to announce details of its new music service this afternoon. google has already cut deals with sony, emi and universal as well as several independent
