the back. he was taken to kaiser hospital where she was pronounced dead. news chopper 2 saw the suspect later. heavily armed officers responded from throughout the city, a helicopter also assisted in the search with some of these police helicopters have still been in the scene up until a little while ago. one man has been arrested, it's unclear if they are still looking for someone else. now when we arrived here on the scene it was obvious that something really bad had happened judging by the mood on the officers faces. they seemed distraught, at least a few of them. one of them was crying. so when we pulled up we knew something had happened. stay with us, there is a news conference from city hall and ktvu will be there. sal castaneda, ktvu news. we go straight to ktvu john sasaki who has the very latest

from the vallejo officer where that injured officer was taken. >> that is kaiser hospital where this officer was rushed by paramedics after this shooting. in the hours since it happened there's been a steady stream of officers, friends and family coming to the er in many cases the dispair they are feeling is clear. lots of hugs and tears. this afternoon, i've learned that the officer transferred here to vallejo police from the highway patrol so many at chp are devastated. we've also learned he's well known in law enforcement circles. one police officer told me he was a friend. in this situation just like any time an officer is killed all other law enforcement will feel as though they've lost a brother. this is how dangerous being a police officer can be. john sasaki. >> we'll be following if story on our website with any late breaking developments just log on to ktvu.com. it is a cautious celebration tonight for occupy

protesters in the bay area with a looming threat of eviction hanging over their heads. our live team coverage starts with david stevenson from the city where the mayor is being careful about imminent police officer action. >> reporter: we're live at the scene here in downtown san francisco at herman plaza where people are gathering to celebrate the two month anniversary of the occupy movement. everyone as the city government says they are ready to evict this camp. san francisco this afternoon served a final notice that the encampment in front of the federal reserve must pack up its tents or face consequences. >> they are now not in compliance. we have to get ourselves ready. >> ready for what is unclear. major ed lee today declined to

say when the tents lining the park might be removed by police. with an estimate 199 tents, public health officials say the camp on the plaza is a health hazard. the mayor says it's not enough. >> the meetings we've had have been very instrucktive because it indicates to us too that their leadership is not as solidifies as we expected them to be now. >> reporter: the mayor is frustrated that previous agreements to limit the number and locations of tents have been violated by other members of the leaderless group. >> the fact that other people may come in and cause problems, that's temporary. we have cooperated to the best of our ability. >> the core group has worked -- has worked well with us and they are trying as best they can to cooperate and be good neighbors. >> reporter: steven phillips says the occupation spread is

driving away business during an already slow month. >> the numbers have just simply made it so that it's attracted an element in here that's really made it difficult for us to support business. >> reporter: and as of just 30 seconds ago i received a call from the san francisco mayor's office, they tell me that the city has spent as of yesterday $625,000 to police the protest and inspect and clean the plaza here in san francisco. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. and let's take another look at that protest from a different angle. here's a live look from herman plaza there on the ground people walking around there. tents still up. people celebrating the two month anniversary. people there playing some bongos, playing music. same scene we've seen there over the past few weeks. yesterday close to 100 people

arrested after they took over a b of a bank. protesters are really denouncing bank bail outs and tuition hikes. the city posting those eviction notices. >> eviction notices have been posted but is that enough to get the occupiers to leave on their own? jade hernandez also live in the city after talking to protesters who offer a different perspective on what they feel will be a police raid on their encampment. >> demonstrators say they have a reason to be here. there's a teach in with speakers right over here. a press conference just wrapped up moments ago right here. just up market, reality began to seep in. >> basically they're telling us that all of our tents here have to be taken down. >> reporter: that includes this wishing tree and other items on the sidewalk in front of the

federal reserve bank. the note came from the city before we arrived this afternoon. but occupiers don't want to leave for fear of losing ground they think they've won. >> it's a movement, awareness for the rest of the 99%. >> reporter: the occupy movement in san francisco's justin herman plaza doesn't turn anyone away including the homeless. and the mentally ill with no place to go. we watched earlier today, police escort this agitated woman away after she demanded the media leave the encampment. when i asked if the homeless issue has become the main focus of sf occupy i was told other wise. >> there's pension, retirement, it's all fleeting. like our economy is crashing and we need to take action now. >> we're working on all these things that the city wants so we can try to keep the city off to the side so we can pay attention to the protest.

why we're all here. the socio economic issues in all of america and what's going on. >> reporter: staying put has proven difficult with colder weather setting in. >> it's been 30 or some odd days for me and it's hard out here, hard. >> reporter: the progressive workers spent 90 minutes to announce their teach in that's going on. the san francisco police department and the public works department, they are pulling out the barricades. the barricades that have been up for all of today. we don't know what's going to happen, but we're going to keep you updated as soon as they start moving those barricades out, we'll give you an update at 6:00. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. occupy cal demonstrators are gathering at this hour for a large rally that comes after an overnight raid to clear the occupy encampment on campus.

jades hernandez live for us, what's happening now alex? >> reporter: this crowd just significantly in the last five minutes we saw a large contingent of student protesters make their way here. and as you can see they're making a lot of noise. carrying this large banner that says our space. and they were carrying floating tents as well. and saying they do plan to set tents back here back up here on the steps of the hall after the police action that occurred overnight where officers came in and swept out an encampment. there's a lot of anger and frustration from folks here. many people we talked to said they are determined to set tents up back here on the cal campus. what they say would be a symbol of defiance. >> demand all those at sprawl hall to immediately disperse. >> reporter: the surprise raid on occupy cal came at 3:30 this morning. police officers got help from near by agencies as they cleared out about 20 tents that

had been set up on the steps of sprawl hall. >> just swarmed the place, there were no 10 minute warning or nothing. >> every time they tear everything down, it shows to everybody visually how first amendment rights are violated. >> reporter: along with the tents, campus police also cleared out these two pianos that had become part of the occupy cal. >> if they come back on the campus -- >> reporter: michael young says the occupy cal movement needs music. >> it's important to bring an atmosphere of positivity especially because of what happened last night. >> reporter: administrators are trying to work out an agreement of some kind with occupy cal protesters that doesn't violate campus rules. many students though seem determined to build their camp back up again. you can see a fairly good crowd is getting set up here on the

steps of sprawl hall. this is part of an occupy cal rally as we take you up top floating above us here, you can see those are two floating tents here above the cal campus symbolic for the protesters out here after 20 of their tents were swept out of an encampment overnight. they have marched back here over the campus and many people determined to set tents back up here an encampment that the university says would violate the rules of the university. they're going to be holding a meeting at 6:00. the main topic will be the tents and whether tents will be set up here on the cal campus. we'll be here to let you know what takes place. for now we're live in berkeley, alex savedge.

people who support the occupy movement plan to rally to city hall. the group assembled here said to be made up of working families, students, and workers. they say they are speaking out on policies. we're going to continue our coverage by going down to robert handa a little later on in this newscast. meanwhile the occupy protest is relatively quiet today. in snow park about 25 tents are still up. when we checked this afternoon there were no signs of trouble or police activity. and frank ogawa plaza in front of city hall was empty. workers have worked to repair frank ogawa plaza. businesses in that area are up and running. this was a day of action in new york today where the occupy movement began exactly two months ago. as many as 175 people were

arrested during demonstrations across the city. protesters began with a march to the new york stock exchange where most of the arrests took place. at least one protester was injured. five officers were also treated after someone threw a liquid into their faces. later protesters took their message to the subways and then the city bridges. in los angeles, hundreds of occupy protesters marched through downtown today to show solidarity with the movement. some protesters carried tents and snarled traffic at one point by setting them up at a busy intersection. a few other marchers were also arrested for straying away from the permitted march rout. we have several crews monitoring the area. our coverage continues on our website. log on to ktvu.com for all the latest on the moves those protesters are making around berkeley, san francisco and san jose. the california supreme court handed a partial victory. backers of proposition eight do have the right to defend its

we're following developing news happening right now in downtown san jose. we're giving you a look at what's happening at the martin luther king library in san jose. people there are gathering in support of the occupy san jose protest. our robert handa is there on the scene we're going to bring him into our live coverage in just about 15 minutes. cal state university faculty fumes about not getting its negotiated raise went on strike today and brought their one day action to two campuses including cal state east bay and hayward. the strike comes one day after the board of trusteed voted, rob roth with the latest. >> reporter: teachers say they will return to the classroom tomorrow but expect for strikes at other campuses in the months

to come. reporting live, rob roth. >> enough is enough. hundreds of teachers from cal state east bay stayed out of their classrooms and walked the picket line today. some faculty arrived at the strike by bus from cal state schools as far as turlock. this teacher was protesting with his infant son. >> i cannot afford a sitter to hire someone to keep him while i'm here. >> reporter: teachers also say the quality of their environment has been affected. >> we don't have the kind of resources to do that and it diminishes our students education. >> what's important is that the faculty union leadership has determined to focus that anger internally as opposed to really focusing on sacramento.

>> reporter: the teacher's union estimates half the teachers have cancelled classes. this student was disappointed his class was cancelled today. >> kind of bummed. i understand that people are mad but it is affecting my education. >> paying faculty a fair salary is not a matter -- it's not putting us against the students. >> reporter: teachers say they'll be back in the classroom tomorrow but expect more strikes at other campuses in the months to come. reporting live in hayward, rob roth, ktvu news. we learn that a man accused of firing an assault rifle at the white house may be mentally ill. we're told that oscar ortega hernandez thought he was jesus. authorities say he fired nine bullets at the white house friday, that cracked a window in the president's living

quarters but no one was hurt. ortega hernandez will be transported to washington, d.c. for prosecution. police are looking for a man who robbed the chase bank. police say this video shows the man that robbed the bank. he handed a teller a note demanding money but did not have a weapon. they do say the money had a die pact in it that exploded and that the man might have been covered in red die. he is described to be in his early 20s with light clothes, cropped hair and wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt. we're talking about changes and we're starting to feel some of those changes already. >> you can see them outside right now with the clouds increasing. temperatures today dropped off a good five to 10 degrees in some places. things are changing around. i have low both radars working right now. one up in sacramento, doppler

radar. as you come closer, we're watching radar. there's high windmill that is reflect off the davis radar. you get the picture, dry out there now but showers are headed our way. it's basically a cloudy kind of cool weather pattern today. look at this out here, doesn't that look like the middle of winter kind of february like pattern. the cold air is getting here. when you get cold air you do get low clouds like this. these clouds will thicken up. some dynamics and mechanisms are going to show up here in the next 24 hours or so. tomorrow's forecast showers and cooler, snow levels will be low. as you said yesterday and the day before that, this system, this one coming in right now for tomorrow. it's a cool one, doesn't hold a lot of moisture. cold air just doesn't do that. we're not expecting a lot of shower activity. it'll be widely scattered, low showers friday. most likely toward the middle end of the day. we'll get to that in a moment, forecast overnight lows and the

energy secretary spoke, he said that politics had nothing to do to his decision to lend millions of the dollars to the firm. >> i made them with the best interest of the taxpayer in mind. i did not make any decision based on political considerations. republicans on the house energy and commerce committee lit into steven chu today. they brought up e-mails that says the white house asked solyndra to wait off to announce their bankruptcy until after the november elections. >> if you go back to look at the time the decisions were being made, was there incompetence. was there any influence of the political nature and i would have to say no. >> so no apology. >> it is extremely unfortunate

what has happened. president obama toured solyndra one year before it went bankrupt. the white house fired back today showing that the public chair interviewed with the deal on behalf of a solar company in his state. forklifts at the warehouse on potrero hill are busy moving pallets as requests are at an all time high. >> sometimes they are part time jobs they string together, none of them with benefits. people that have left their careers and are near minimum wage to make ends meet. >> reporter: california farmers have been especially generous offering fruits and vegetables at lower than usual prices. the san jose occupy

movement is getting a big emotional boost from this rowdy march going on right now but it comes as san jose occupiers are being told to move on. and another live look for you on if ground at san francisco's justin herman plaza. the city has posted final notices saying that the tents must be taken down. right now occupiers concerned that a raid might come at any point. we are continuing to follow this developing situation. the state supreme court today handed down a 61 page ruling, we took a look at it. we will tell you what it means for the battle.

the road for those who have been camping out. now the situation is heating up. robert handa here to tell us how the situation is heating up. >> reporter: moments ago we showed you the rally that was going on at martin luther king library, now the march is underway and this demonstration is made up by working groups showing their solidarity to the day of action. the service employee union are the organizers. there are no plans for civil disobedience. this group is marching to city hall to join the occupy group that has been camped there but people here will find a much different situation there starting today, occupiers are being moved out. >> reporter: sean okelly has

campus. we want to give you a live look now, about 200 people have gathered. students tonight are telling ktvu they will rebuild the camp. they recently attached some balloons to tents which are now floating over head. we are again live on the scene there at berkeley, and we'll continue to follow that situation and from the cal campus i want to go across the bay to san francisco and give you another live look there at justin herman plaza. the city officials there in san francisco saying that that encampment is now becoming just a public health nuisance. city did post a final notices in that area saying that tent must be taken down. as you can see there on that live picture, million tents, dozens of them still remain there at the foot of market street. we also have a live crew there on scene and we'll continue to follow that situation there at occupy san francisco. we showed you protesters

showing support for the occupy movement in several bay area cities today. that includes walnut creek. dozens of people gathered on main street starting at 11:30 this morning. this following the similar protest at that same location yesterday afternoon. >> we're here to support the public at large with which we have done historically. we're here to support everyone because everyone deserves health coverage. everyone deserves housing, everyone deserves a job. >> reporter: organizers say they are also encouraging people to move their money out of big banks. now we have several groups monitoring the occupy protest and our coverage continues on our website. you can find the link for the

bay area. >> reporter: the issue is brought to the state's highest court by the ninth circuit court. the question is a legal one. it was challenged in the courts, usually when that happens, public officials defend it. but neither the governor nor the attorney general would. so the backers of prop eight protect marriage.com did. what the ninth circuit wanted to know was could they. in the decision filed today the justices said quote, we conclude that california law authorizes the official proponents under some circumstances to appear in the proceeding, to assert the state's interest in the initiative validity. protect marriage responded saying the group is delighted calling the ruling a disaster for the quote homo sexual

screening and was a battle to uphold marriage between a man and a woman. same-sex marriage supporters weren't surprised. >> no it's not a great surprise. we were here for the arguments and we did feel there was a general sentiment at the court that day that the judges would uphold the initiative process in california. why we're not shocked by the outcome of today's ruling at all -- >> now we go to the ninth circuit and they need to argue marriage. >> marriages first happened in 2004, now here we are looking at not until 2012 when we're going to get a decision on prop eight from the ninth circumstance quit. so this does feel -- ninth circuit. it is still up to the ninth circuit what's going to happen. claudine wong. herman cain says he has no plans to quit his race to the white house.

more developing news this time straight to the south bay where this is another look thanks to live chopper 2 of a large crowd that continues to grow there in san jose. the plan is to gather at the library and march to city hall to join protesters that have been out there for a week. this group are made up of teachers and students and

others who sympathize with the occupy movement. take a look right there in the middle of your screen, a lot of balloons and what's attached is a sign. we're also seeing a tent being held up by the balloons. at this point, people in berkeley are saying they are not going to go, they plan to stay but we haven't seen any new tents actually set up on the ground. we have crews in berkeley, san jose as well as san francisco and elsewhere, we're going to stay on top of these developments and bring you the latest as we get them. the house of representatives today voted to kill funding for the light rail project. republicans push for the cuts saying the money would be better spent improving existing rail service. among them congressman tom mcclintock in placer county. >> this has been a scam from

day one. it shocks me it's taken this long for it to unravel. >> california voters approved the nearly $10 million bond for high speed rail. critics want to put the project before the voters once again in hopes of now derailing it. by next summer, b.a.r.t. riders should be sitting on some new seats. the b.a.r.t. board of directors voted to spend almost $2 million to replace some of those old fabric seats with vinyl ones. next year crews will begin changing seats. we have a picture to show you of what the new seats will look like. more new seats may be ordered depending on funding and passenger feed back. one proposal would extend service by half an hour on friday night and then delay the first train on saturday morning by a half hour. no decision has been made but the board asks staff to research whether buses could be

40 minutes since jade hernandez was bringing us a live report. and we saw police lining up right there at the camp. at this point it doesn't appear like much has changed and to be honest it looks like it's a pretty quiet scene. people milling about, i am guessing a lot of people inside the tents. today marks two months exactly since the occupy movement started. in san francisco, the police and the mayor have been pretty -- about the scene. bay area researchers say a new age of ocean exploration dawned today in san francisco. ktvu's health and science editor john fowler joins us live with robots of the deep. >> reporter: right now four robot discoverers are off the golden gate, swimming on their own across the pacific. the first few miles out past the crab pots was on the back of a boat. you see them here four surfboard shaped robots. going where none has gone

aa estimates that 40 million americans will travel 50 miles or more on this thanksgiving weekend. about 90% of it are going to travel by car. this year's is a 20% increase from last year. drivers will be paying a bit more for that road trip, gas prices are about 50-cents higher per gallon compared to last thanksgiving. san francisco airport kicked off the holiday travel season and one week from thanksgiving the crowds already are gathering for the big get away. >> we're going to see a big bump in traffic today, and by tomorrow people start to travel out here for the holiday. it will continue through the end of the year for the christmas holiday. 140,000 people are expected
