press conference to get started. let's go to ktvu john sasaki, he is live tonight at the hospital in vallejo where officers tonight are in shock and sorrow, john. >> mike, this is kaiser vallejo where there's been a lot of pain and anguish today because this is where the officer was brought after the shooting in the hours as soon as it happened there's been a steady stream of friends and officers. the dispair they are feeling is clear. lots of hugs and tears. we understand from residents here in vallejo that the officers who's name has not been released was well known in the community for giving back quite a bit. including as a high school basketball coach. and that he was a member of the vallejo police department for some 28 years. someone who's very, very well known in the community and i've talked to officers in other agencies, law enforcement agencies in the bay area who also knew him. who are also devastated by this

loss. of course in this situation, just like any time an officer is killed other law enforcement officials even though who don't know him they feel as though they have lost a brother. i've talked to several officers today who do feel exactly that. live in vallejo, i'm john sasaki ktvu news. the occupy movement is going strong in san jose at this hour as the protesters there also signaling that they are not ready to quit. their actions have been for the most part peaceful today and our ktvu janine de la vega is monitoring the situation. she join us now with what the protesters have planned for tonight. janine. >> well julie there are hundreds of protesters standing out here in front of san jose city hall. they marched about a half hour ago from martin luther king library. they marched about 100 blocks and stopped here at city hall. this is where the occupy encampment has been. they are all doing this as part

of the nation dade of action. people are here from various working groups. these are employee union, teachers, community workers of america. and you can see right now they are rallying, they are chanting. there's everyone a san jose city councilman that just took the podium a little while ago and was rallying the crowd here. something else that i want to point out is that there's actually one man who is actually up on top of the wall there at san jose city hall. he's been there for 26 days earlier today, he was told by authorities that he must come down. so far though we have not seen any authorities come in to move him down but there's speculation that might happen sometime later tonight. also, you don't see any tents here because they were moved out this morning. and every night the occupy san jose people have been moving their tents across the street to spend the night across the street. but as the marchers were coming in we actually saw somebody physically pick up one of the

at the -- one of the tents across the street and move it in here. tonight they're still going to be here in some form. it's unclear whether they're going to move the tents back here. most likely they're going to keep rallying, we're told that the organization move on.org plans to be here and joining this crowd of about i would say 200 people. so right now again they're still rallying and it looks like they're taking off and i'm not sure where they are marching to now. but it's been very peaceful, but yeah, very peaceful, just chanting. that's it from here live from san jose city hall, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. protesters say they are getting ready for mass resistance. david stevenson live in the city where there are signs of police eviction action could be imminent, david. >> reporter: san francisco of public health delivered this

notice of violation to occupy. one of a flurry of new warnings mitigating intentions to evict the camp. official arrived to postthe eviction notices. the city originally allowed the camp of 100 small at the present times as it met with protesters about their long term goals. there are now about 200 tents and more than 200 people camping here. the city says it spent $625,000 to police the protest and inspect and clean the plaza. >> our health director, our public works director, our human services director have all registered that this is not sustainable. >> reporter: the city today ordered protesters to remove tents in front of the federal reserve. left unsaid is whether police will step in soon to dis

here on the steps of sprawl hall on the campus of uc berkeley right now. now at about -- this all comes after this mortgage's raid which happened at 3:30 a.m. u.s. police and other officers cleared out about 20 tents. two people were arrested on that early morning raid. a university spokesperson told ktvu that administrators are now trying to work out an agreement with protesters. protesters raised their voices in support of the 99% and encouraged people to move their money out of big banks. >> ♪ >> more than 100 protesters rallied on north main street at about 11:30 this morning. they chanted and held signs that read rest in peace middle class and capitalism eight democracy. there were protests around the country to mark two months to the start of the occupy movement. in the city, 175 people were arrested in clashes between

police and protesters. the protesters said they were trying to retake the park where the camp started. 400 protesters marched through downtown los angeles this afternoon. lines of police officers tried to keep the demonstrators on the sidewalks about two dozen people were arrested after sitting down in the street. police also arrested several protesters who set up tents in bank of america plaza downtown. and our coverage continues online on ktvu.com. you will find the very latest information on the occupy movement and raw video from the protest right there. a fairfield mother charged in the death of four children was convicted today of involuntary manslaughter. shatara james was convicted of

one of the protesters arrested monday has now been releaseed from federal custody. 36-year-old francisco ramos of mexico was arrested outside oakland city hall. while in santa rita jail he was flagged by immigration and customs enforcement. he was then transferred and held in san francisco for a few hours this morning before being released. yearly is in the u.s. on an expired student visa. hundreds of faculty members staged a one day strike. >> enough is enough. >> reporter: that was the scene at usf east bay as teachers walked the picket line. the teachers say they were promised raises three years ago and still haven't received them. >> we are being asked to teach classes that have hundreds of students in them and we're not equipped to do that. we don't have the resources to

do that and it diminishes the students education. the california supreme court ruled today that backers of proposition eight have the legal standing to defend the law. the issue arose after state officials opted not to defend the voter approved ban in federal court. protect marriage took up the defense. the group says it is delighted by the ruling. same-sex marriage advocates say they are also glad the case can now move forward. chu testified today the federal loan to fremont based solyndra was not politically influenced. >> was there any influence of the political nature, i would have to say no.

but those earlier hours means that employees will have to start working late thursday night. employees that we spoke to here didn't seem to mind having to work the early shift. >> i actually wanted the midnight shift but i wasn't able to get it. so yeah -- >> why? >> well i thought it would just be fun working the black friday shift, see how busy we were going to be. >> reporter: retailers typically have the best deals on appliances and toys. that's enough reason for some who want to get holiday shopping done early and get discounts. >> this year i think i want to try it out and definitely get a head start on everything but we'll see how it goes. >> it's going to be $89.86. >> reporter: retailers hope the new hours will add up to more revenue. janine de la vega, ktvu channel -- channel 2 news. the number of people filing for unemployment benefits for the first time fell to 388,000. that's the lowest number since

april. the four week average dropped below 400,000 for the first time in seven months. on wall street today, stocks took a tumble under fears of more trouble in europe. traders say the market is on edge as the crisis appears to be spreading to larger countries. the dow jones lost almost 135 points today, the nasdaq lost more than 51. facebook is adding skype video chatting. facebook users will have to synchronize their facebook and skype accounts. after that they'll be able to make skype calls to either service when they are logged in. we have radar working for us right now. you take a peek and you see not much going on. a little bit of shower activity in the hills here. very light. unsettled weather headed our way. look at the clouds out there today, how it stacked up.

that's a cool looking sky. a cold air system headed our way. not a real well organized cold front. but a lot of cold air. what that will give us is sort of this instability in the area over the next three or four days. that will bring scattered showers at times. those showers start tomorrow. then they'll kind of linger and go away in the evening and then we'll see then again saturday night and sunday morning. here is what it looks like in the forecast, lots of 40s, low 40s. tomorrow the showers are widely scattered. it's going to be hit and miss tomorrow and it'll be light. mainly in the afternoon. a good shot for your afternoon commute to get a little bit wet. this system on the weekend seeps down the coast. right now it looks like it's going to move down to san francisco. this computer model does this. 8:00a.m. tomorrow morning, right, maybe a sprinkle. light drizzle. there's your afternoon commute. no big deal but possible wet. there's your friday evening

now a big time manager. named the chicago cubs new manager. this is the first managerial job for him. he of course has been a long time coach in the major leagues. this past season was the milwaukee brewers batting coach. and this is a sporting life for right now. more of course tonight at 10:00. julie. >> all right, mark thanks very much. we are monitoring the upcoming vallejo police press conference on the officer shot and killed today while he was trying to apprehend a bank robbery suspect. >> it all started about 1:30 this afternoon at springtown center at the bank of america. there are reports of a bank robbery. two men reportedly wearing halloween masks entered the bank, then the patrol officer who was near by responded. when that officer got to the bank, he reportedly spotted the suspect vehicle which was described as a gnc denali he started to chase it. that chase came to an end near

by on the 100 block of janice street. one of the suspects fired at the police officer who was shot and killed. we're looking at live police pictures right now of them getting ready to hold a police conference ready to clarify whether there was one suspect or two suspects. one suspect reportedly captured. officers have been going door to door and there's a massive search involving police agencies from many different areas around the bay area looking for potentially different suspects. let's go now to this police presser in vallejo. >> on today's date at around 13:36 hours police responded to a call of a bank robbery at the bank of america on springs town center. while officers responded to that call, they received some additional information about a vehicle which was associated with the suspect which was fleeing the area. officers in route to the call were able to locate this

vehicle, attempted to stop this vehicle, we were led on a vehicle pursuit that roughly three or four miles which terminated in the 100 block of janice avenue. the pursuit was terminated because our officer employed a pit maneuver which spun the vehicle out. and he then pursued the suspect on foot into a residential neighborhood. shortly after exiting his vehicle and chasing the suspect, officers who were arriving just moments later heard several shots fired. they discovered our officer down in the backyard and he was mortally wounded. he was transported at that time to a local hospital. and emergency medical doctors and technicians and nurses worked on him for about an hour

with emergency medical procedures which were ultimately failed. the officer next of kin has been notified. he is identified as officer james kapoo of the department. he's been with us over 19 years also with the california highway patrol for a couple of years before that and also a former united states marine corp. service as well. right now we have numerous investigators that are at the police department. they have just finished a briefing, we are in the process of continuing our investigation. we have one suspect in custody. we are in the process of spreading out and determining exactly what happened during today's events. that's all the information i
