complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2news at noon. >> a major wildfire has destroyed numerous homes in reno and continues to threaten others. that is one of top stories today. good afternoon, i am tori campbell, more on that fire any moment but first new information was just released on the fatal shooting a vallejo police officer, claudine wong joins us now with the identity

of the suspect. >> reporter: within the last hour police identified the man they believe is responsible for shooting and killing the officer. we want to show you a mug shot just given to us by the police department of henry albert smith, facing charges of bank robbery and murder. a man who made one last desperate escape attempt moments before being captured. >> it is just terrible. it was terrible. >> estear foster said police swarmed the neighborhood when her son spotted him. >> he looked across the street and there was this guy standing there but he didn't know who the guy was so he came into the house and locked the door and shortly later somebody was knocking on my door. >> it wasn't the police. >> s it it wasn't the police, oh, yeah, open the door, open the door, open the door, he

sounded angry and desperate and police were here in moments. >> he was here and they were, they put the handcuffs on him and took him on in the car and took off. >> was he fighting them, was he doing -- >> no, he didn't -- he didn't fight them at all. >> police did taze the man, identified as henry albert smith of fairfield. police now say he alone was responsible for the bank robbery, the chase and the shooting of the officer and was armed when he was taken into custody. >> he had a handgun. we are not going to talk about the caliber but he had a handgun. >> today foster is still shaken but says she was grateful her door was locked when he came looking for an escape. >> he could have come in and probably killed me. >> we also learned he had a camera on his dash cam that recorded the car chase and part of the foot pursuit, police are still deciding whether to release that video.

>> the community is expressing its grieve grief over the loss of the officer with a growing memorial there. he had coached the girl's basketball team at vallejo high school. one of his former students brought her basketball jersey as a tribute along with the many canals and others. she said he was a strong person. >> he helped many people in the community and helped me become the leader i am and helped me continue with basketball. i am going to contra costa because of him. e wasn't i wasn't going to play basketball no more. i just can't believe it. >> she said she would not be going to college now, if were not for his efforts. the police department are working with his family on services. on to our other top story now, the governor of nevada has

declared a state of emergency over a wildfire broke out on the edge of reno and has destroyed at least 20 homes. the fire is burning in the collin ranch area, it has burned 450 acres, 9500 people are under voluntary evacuations as winds drive the fire toward more densely populated areas, 90 schools have been closed to reduce traffic and clear the roads for firefighters. >> a lot of thick brush and very nice homes, very nice part of reno and it is the typical sierra he altitude geography, so dry as bones you might say. >> several people have suffered from smoke inhalation, one suffered a heart attack. firefighters say high winds mean they will not contain the fire anytime soon. because winds are such a major factor we want to check in with

our meteorologist rosemary orosco live with a closer look at that. >> a rapid moving fire because of the winds. tory mentioned just 60 miles per hour in some cases in between the canyons and the reg tops the ridge tops could be closer to 80 or 100 miles an hour. looks like the winds are blowing in the city at 20 miles an hour, so smoke and air quality an issue for many of the residents, as we mentioned an evacuation of 10,000 people so far. the winds are going to continue to blow. let's show you some of the pictures of what has been caught so far as this fire started early this morning. you can see just the deep canyon area, you can see very thick brush and we have got a lot of trees there, that means a lot of fuel and the winds blowing erratically, that means dangerous to residents and dangerous for wildfire fighters as they try to get in there, in

addition to those high winds blowing and fanning the flames there, they also blow embers so now you have new fires so definitely have their hands full today, i guess the good news if you could call it the winds die down and snow is in the forecast, tory. >> we have more coverage on the channel 2 website including more images, go to ktvu.com. oakland police are investigating an overnight shooting. police found the victim lying on san pablo avenue near 34th street around 12:30 this morning. police tell us the victim had been shot at least once but they don't believe he was shot near 34th and san pablo because they could not find any shell casings. the man was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. firefighters spent the night putting out and apartment fire that broke out after midnight at unth avenue and plymouth street. firefighters say the eight unit

complex was vacant. no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation. this morning occupy oakland organizers unveil plans to set up a new encampments but not everyone in that neighborhood is welcoming them. protesters say they will stage a march and rally tomorrow, then pitch their tents on a piece of property at 19th street and telegraph avenue, owned by the oakland redevelop agency but there are businesses, the school of arts and condos in the area as well. >> we decided that on november 19th we will come together once again to show our force and re- establish our camp. the oakland commune will survive this attack and continue to grow and make oakland proud. >> you are going to put together a dirty filthy tent city right in the metledz in the middle of where all of us live. >> yes. >> they also plan to particular to protest plans to close the

school. protesters camped out on a san francisco sidewalk are now being told to leave. the city issued an order yesterday saying the tents are in violation of the city code. the mayor said the tents need to be taken down immediately but he will not say whether police officers will step in if the tents remain. california's unemployment rate fell slightly last month. the rate fell from 11.9% in september to 11.7% in october. with a total of 25,700 jobs added last month, a significant improvement from last year the same time. the added jobs were in construction, education, health services and hospitality. protesters filed into the lobby of the hyatt regency

hotel demanding two house keepers be rehired. the sisters say they were fired after they complained about these doctored pictured posted on a bulletin board. the attorney says it was in retaliation for their complaints. a spokesman says the protest is an effort to boost union membership. >> only a few weeks later they were terminated by the hyatt hotel. we think the termination raises questions. >> they are using a couple of dismissals very well warranted, a clear violation of policy, to drum up an emotional response to something that is not true. >> the woman's attorney has filed a retail retaliation charge with the federal commission. they just announced they are re-opening the 30 year investigation into the death of movie star natalie wood. light rain but rosemary says the cold may get most of your attention.

morning rush hour traffic had to use the shoulder to get around crews, work went later than expected when the new tar did not harden or cure. this shot is from the chopper it shows traffic backed up for miles. crews eventually packed up an hour later but it wasn't until well after 9 this morning the traffic finally lightened up. an 18-year-old woman from brentwood this brentwood died this morning in a crash. it happened just east of pleasant hill road. investigators say the victim, sidney plumber, was a passenger in a ford focus that hit another car and she was in the center divide when she walked back to the focus and was hit by traffic. the accident closed traffic for two hours.

the 33rd annual jonestown memorial service is underway right now in the east bay to honor the victims and remind the public about all the people killed in that mass suicide in jonestown, guana on november 18th, 1978, christien kafton joins us now. >> reporter: good morning, or good afternoon rather, that service started 20 minutes ago, let's take you inside right now so you can see. as you said family members or some of them are gathering here to remember that tragic day in 1978. the service is underway to remember all people who died there that day. some families had opposed the memorial here because it includes the name of people's temple and jonestown's leader jim jones. despite that it was completed this year, 4 slabs of granite with 1918 names etched into them here. this is where 412 of the

unclaimed victims were buried, organizers of the service say today is a day to think about the victims who died, including more than 300 children. >> they never had the opportunity to live their fum god-given destiny because of jim jones, the lune a tick lunatic and the madman. >> her family alone lost 27 members, it included singing and a prayer service, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2news. >> we are just getting word about a lot soldier killed in afghanistan, shawn walsh from san jose was killed owned on wednesday by what they call indirect fire. he was assigned to the 185th military police battalion based out of california. investigators say robert wagner is not a suspect in the

re-opened death investigation of his wife natalie wood. the los angeles sheriff's office said this morning that new information has surfaced that is substantial enough to take another look at the case. wood drowned in 1981 off catalina island. at the time it was called an accident but questions about the circumstances persisted for decades. >> the case has been assigned to two sheriff's homicide investigators who will be following up on the additional information as well as any other additional information that may develop. >> also today the captain of the boat natalie wood and robert wagner were on said he blames wagner for woods' death. he was not specific but the times report that authorities re-opened the case based on comments by the boat captain. the food and drug administration just announced the cancer drug avastin should no longer be used. they said it is causing side

effects including high blood pressure, bleeding or heart failure. the agency adds there is no prove it extends patient's lives. despite this new ruling it will still be used to treat colon cancer patients and certain tumors. the holiday travel season is underway and sfo expects today to be its busiest day. more than 140,000 passengers are expected to pass through sfo today. nationwide air travel is expected to be down this thanksgiving but not at sfo. a 4.5% increase is expected compared to this time last year. in contrast the san jose airport made the top of the list of lease crowded airports this thanksgiving. amtrak is gearing up for the holiday rush. next week cars will be added to trains along some routes. bus service will also be

this morning because we saw the same thing on veterans' day. light rain, cooler, your weekend going to see a slight break on saturday before more rains moves in but it is still going to be cool and breezy, 57 napa, widespread 50s. 50 degrees for san jose could be one of the warm spots along the peninsula today, 58 san bruno, 58 in the city, scattered showers today, mainly dry for the first half of tomorrow, more rain expected sunday morning then monday's monday-tuesday not bad at all but farther down the road one of the busiest days of the year could get rain, perhaps wednesday -- >> thank you rosemary. >> okay. >> crab boats should be taking off from docks around the bay area but an ongoing price dispute has stalled the crab season. the crab season opened on

tuesday but fishermen are refusing to go out until a price is agreed upon. they are asking for 2.50 a pound, buyers are offering two dollars. >> it is almost too late for thanksgiving. >> people are going to be disappointed. >> i know they are and i feel bad about that but we can't work for free. >> the crab season north of sonoma county has been delayed because the crabs there are too small. monterrey county's spca is offering a reward for information leading to the conviction of whoever left six puppies at a recycling center. they found the puppies ought the facility north of watsonville on wednesday. the spca says evidence at the scene suggests someone just drove up to a fence and threw them over it. just ahead another look at the situation in reno where a wildfire has caused a state of emergency. and why this land mark sign near the bay bridge will soon be taken down.

well stocks are mixed, the dow at least edging higher as investors balancing signs of future growth in the u.s. economy with a looming deadline for congress to reach a deal inits deficit reduction talks, that deadline is monday night. the dow is currently up 40, le,811, the nasdaq though having a tough time for tech stocks today, down 12, s&p is

up one. we have an update now on a wildfire burning on the southwest edge of reno, where the nevada governor has declared a state of emergency. the fire started just after midnight. it has burned at least 450 acres. it has destroyed at least 20 homes. winds are gusting to 60 miles an hour, one person has suffered a heart attack and several people have suffered smoke inhalation. firefighters say they have no idea how the fire started or when they will have it contained. san francisco's famous yahoo billboard is about to go away. the billboard overlooks the eastbound approach to the bay bridge. it has been there serving as an icon for 12 years, the removal comes as yahoo has been struggling with a decline in revenue. the space will become available beginning in december starting at $65,000 a month. palo alto is trying to keep

people shopping longer with extended hours. normally they can only stay in garages for two hours but through new year's day drivers can leave their cars in there for four hours instead. the deputy city manager said the city wants people to shop without worrying about a ticket. two hour restrictions though will remain at surface lots. a giant christmas tree arrived this morning at jack london square in oakland. it is a 55 foot silver tip fir. the company carlton christmas trees delivered it around 7:00 a.m. after a six hour drive from mt. shasta. the public is invited to the financial tree lighting ceremony two weeks from today on friday, december 2nd. the event will also feature live reindeer, music and a talent show. san francisco's embarcadero centers will be a lot brighter tonight. time for the annual lighting of the tall buildings. this is video from last year's lighting. today's event starts with a winter carnival at 4:00.
