. taking action, more than a thousand occupy protesters take to the streets of oakland, and eye a new place to camp. we'll tell you what they're demanding tonight. and up in flames, the possible cause of the five- alarm fire that destroyed an apartment complex and two well known businesses in berkeley. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 action news at 6:00. good evening, i'm heather holmes. and i'm ken wayne, the

occupy protesters are on the move again tonight, taking their anti-wall street message back to the city streets. after almost four hours of marching through downtown oakland, the crowd of 700 here marched within the last 30 minutes. here is what is happening, live from news chopper 2, you can see several hundred people are jumping up and down in the street. the protesters have just taken over an empty lot there and are setting up a new occupy camp. we have team coverage of tonight's occupy activity around the bay area. we begin with ktvu's jade hernandez live at 19th and tel'graph, what is happening now jade? [loud noises] [inaudible] >> reporter: there are protesters -- [inaudible] the demonstrators are -- a lot going on out here.

[inaudible] [inaudible] >> reporter: the protesters turned the corner at 19th,. [inaudible] we heard loud noises -- [inaudible] to bring their tents into the other areas out here. [inaudible] obviously we're having some audio problems with jade hernandez, essentially what is happening is the occupy protesters had vowed to take over an empty lot there at 19th and telegraph, you can see by the pictures they already set up tents in the area. that is what they said they would do. the fence was placed earlier by police, but the fence has been torn down. some of the neighbors that live in that area say they didn't want the occupy protesters there. starting a facebook page. they planned to link arms, tried to surround the area to protect it from the campers. but that did not work. we'll try to check in with jade

later to see what is happening there. and tonight's occupation beginning with a large march through downtown oakland as hundreds of protesters rallied outside banks and schools. and the march spread out across all lanes of traffic on broad, grand and other streets blocking traffic as the demonstration made its way from city hall to elsewhere. we have more from the live story. >> reporter: heather we started at frank ogawa plaza, now the streets here are back open. they closed them to allow the march to come through and kind of opened them again as the march went through each intersection. the march we saw? overall everything went pretty smoothly. the occupy oakland day of action is a mix of dance parties, and street protests. it stretched three city blocks

long. >> guess i will have to wait until they are done, do you know how far back they are? >> reporter: they targeted the banks along the 1 1.7-mile route. the words were in chalk, not paint. the protest was loud and peaceful. >> we are the 99%. >> reporter: the protesters highlighted the education. >> i am hopes to teach them that if there is an issue, if there is anything you want to address you can use your voice. >> reporter: with small but powerful messengers like cora. >> can you tell me what your sign says? >> i don't know what it says. >> reporter: are you showing them why you march? >> because were trying to save the -- >> reporter: this was important on this day of action. and you're looking at cora's school across the street from me, one of five oakland elementary schools that is

slated for closure due to budget cuts and the only school that was highlighted along this protest march. reporting live in oakland, noelle walker, ktvu. and the patrol shut down the grand exit there for a while this afternoon as the marchers went to the grand lake area. our news chopper 2 was over head around 4:00 this afternoon, after the officers chosed the ramp. you can see -- closed the ramp. you can see the flares and the officers there, and it remains heavy. now to occupy san jose, shaun kelly came down after nearly four weeks on top of the 36-foot tall wall, then pitching a tent in the afternoon. other protesters held signs, chanted. the san jose police responded, ordering the protesters to leave. police say the demonstrators left peacefully, and there was no vandalism or arrests.

and removing several tents at justin herman plaza this afternoon, they warned demonstrators they had to leave the grassy areas there, at the embarcadero. the officials say the camp cannot continue indefinitely. the san francisco police were not involved in the actions today. and uc davis launching an investigation into the use of pepper spray against the occupy protesters on campus. the dramatic video gained nationwide attention . [loud noises] . you can see it here, the officer spraying demonstrators in the face as they circle around the police. today, the uc davis chancellor called it chilling, saying she is setting up a task force to look into the police's response. at the press conference, some called for the chancellor to

resign. the students protested the higher tuition costs. you can see more on the video and the footage on our website at ktvu.com. click on the occupy protest link on the home page. and an up date on the fire that killed one person, destroyed dozens of homes. investigators now believe the fire was caused by downed power lines. it started yesterday morning, growing to more than 2000 acres in just hours, destroying 32 homes, damaging several others. one man also died of a heart attack while being evacuated. last night the snow helped them get control. the fire is 80% contained and today many evacuees went back home. >> and to know that some were not as lucky. it is heart breaking and random. >> firefighters expect to have that fire fully contained by tomorrow. and berkeley city officials say the building badly damaged in a five-alarm fire last night is a public safety danger and

must be torn down. a four-block area around telegraph and haste will be closed at least until monday morning. some say they know how the fire started. >> reporter: it has been a fixture on the corner of telegraph and haste since 1916, inside, the pub, and nearly a century of history. >> i am shocked, in disbelief. >> reporter: the firefighters got a call about smoke in the building just before 9:00 last night. within hours it was a five alarm blaze. >> the flames started to go through the roof and started burning green, like maybe it was hot enough to like melt copper. >> reporter: the red cross says approximately 60 residents were displaced, some coming out to console each other. there were no reports of injuries. the fire may have started in an elevator equipment room? the fire started, working

vertically, spreading. >> reporter: more than 16 hours after this fire started firefighters were still tackling hot spots, the building has been red tagged and engineers say it is not sound. that is part of the reason the intersection will be closed throughout the weekend. the owners of the restaurant next door carried out cash registers and cooking equipment, as they and others closed up shop during the weekend. the manager there says he is not sure when or if the owners of his restaurant will rebuild. >> i have been working for this place for 23 years or so. half of my life. and -- now it is gone. >> reporter: his work, in a place dozens of people called home destroyed overnight. in berkeley, ktvu channel 2 action news. berkeley city officials are asking those who are living in the building to call the police and fire nonemergency line so the student can better assess who needs help. the number on your screen.

and a disabled woman who went missing in oakland has been found. lee of oakland wind was seen last monday, and didn't return from classes. she is at risk and needs medicine to control schizophrenia. and folks lining up this morning outside the church in west oakland for the giveaway. 100,000 turkeys were handed out, and many were making bagsful of thanksgiving day trimmings for each family. and another live picture from the occupy oakland movement at 12th and 19, demonstrators on the move since this afternoon. they plan to set up a camp, this time in uptown oakland. and also, car sales moving

. we want to go back now live to the top stories, and occupy protesters took over a vacant lot in the telegraph area, more on the story with jade hernandez. >> reporter: well, heather, it starting raining out here, but as you can tell it is not bothering the protesters out

here. there are possibly a couple of hundred people, maybe 500 people were expected out here. there are tents placed out here, i want my photojournalist to tell you these are the tents they put out. in the last 30 minutes, there were about 13 of these tents put up. and demonstrators have a flat bed truck with a banner on the side. what it says is the oakland cohmune lives. it is live out here, very, loud. i do hear that the oakland police department is at every corner, monitoring the situation. now the oakland police helicopters have been in the sky with the spotlight on the crowd. i want to take it back to the studio, we'll have more at 10:00. >> all right, jade, thank you very much for the update. and community members calling for peace today at the site where an oakland man was

killed at frank ogawa plaza after spending time at the oakland camp. >> members of the group save rallied at the corner of 14th and broadway this week, where one girl was shot last week. the event holds several events, saying it is important to show kindness to the victims and the toll it takes on the community. and the opening day of the san francisco auto show, the show features the latest models from 38 different manufacturers. there are 600 cars, suvs and trucks on display. 17 of the models are electric or hybrid vehicles. the show runs through november 27th. the admission, nine for adults, and children under 12 are three. the month is expected to be the best month of the year for new car sales. as we hear, the automakers are expected to roll out discounts and incentives during the

upcoming holiday season. whatever takes to get people's attention, this car lot hopes that the blue guerilla will do the trick. it could get better, according to one website, data shows that the sales for new cars are the biggest on black friday. many are trying to make way for the 2012 models. and with the holidays approaching they're offering zero% financing, cash rebates and deep discounts. >> people are lining up. all that sort of stuff. it is in the end, we're in the mood if they're in the mood. and it is time to buy. >> reporter: nissan of oakland just opened a few weeks ago, a sign of recovery in the auto industry. they had good foot traffic in their showroom. later, potential buyers were also eyeing inventory. >> and looking for something reliable. it will last me for a long time. and just -- trying to get a good deal, really. >> we will hear advertising, a

little bit more in november or december. and obviously because a lot of people are off on that friday and shopping we'll see a lot of excess sales because of that. >> reporter: dealerships hope that the spending will continue through december, so it makes for a happier new year. ktvu. and an accident in the tailgating area of the yale- harvard football game left a woman dead, others injured. police say a beer keg blew up, hitting the three women before crashing into two other vehicles. investigators don't know why the driver sped up and didn't say whether alcohol was a factor in the crash. and president obama heading back to the u.s., following his nine-day pacific tour. he boarded the plane today shortly after a surprise meeting with the chinese premier. during his trip, mr. obama announced a multi-billion sale of boeing aircraft and a new

military agreement with australia. and members of the congressional super committee said they're working through the weekend to reach a deal before the wednesday deadline. democrats rejected a republican plan to cut about a half a billion in spending. the democrats insist on tax increases for the rich as part of the deal. if the committee doesn't come to an agreement, 1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts will be set to take effect beginning in 2013. and today, officials in libya say that muammar qaddafi's son has been captured. pictures show that seif al- islam has been captured by rebels in the southern part of the country. seif al-islam faces trial from alleged crimes from his father's rule, including torture and murder. and getting new snow, our crews shot this footage here. as you can see a coat of fresh

snow is covering the mountains, in placer county, at last check there were no problems on the main routes to the sierra, a few more inches of snow are expected tomorrow. and you can tell, it is raining here, more snow coming. and it is chilly. yes, an active weather pattern, crossing northern california. the winter weather advisory kicks in for the sierra the next few hours. right now the maps, i can show you this. the coverage has been increasing over the past one to two hours. some light reports of rainfall, also moderate reports as well, yellow showing up in the middle of the bay, right around san francisco, sausalito. you can see the coverage there, not a lot to show knew the southern half of the region, the coastline of pacifica, the airport, of course we're watching the weather in palo alto for the big game.

right now it is dry. but they could dodge a few rain drops later on today as the energy sweeps in from the north. we were able to sneak in a dry day for the daylight hours, mostly cloudy sky, the clouds increasing over the past, three to four hours. tomorrow morning, a few scattered showers out there. temperatures, the coolest locations, back down in the upper 30s. napa, a forecast low of 39, san francisco at 48, and san jose in the lower 40s, 43 degrees. here is the satellite, the radar, you can see the system we're tracking over the past few days, the forecast track is a challenge. we take this into tomorrow. the circulation out here, in the pacific it will head down here towards southern california down here tomorrow, then we'll produce rain in the bay area, the heavier rain set for tonight, rainfall developing, moderate to heavy rainfall, and even the possibility of an isolated thunderstorm for tomorrow morning, some scattered showers, and once again, we're

going to hold on to that slight chance of isolated thunderstorms for the sunday morning, then in the afternoon hours, partly cloudy skies, by mid-to late afternoon. for the sierra, the winter weather advisory that begins at 10:00 this evening. snowfall will be on the order of 4-8 inches, here is the updated forecast model, showing you the rainfall on the increase throughout the evening hours, also into tomorrow morning, tracking moderate to heavy downpours, not a lot to show you tomorrow morning, still scattered showers for tomorrow morning, a chance into the afternoon. and by this time tomorrow it will be dry. tomorrow morning, 7:00. scattered showers, by 12 tell, mostly cloudy skies, temperatures on the cool side. once again we're not warming up too much. mainly in the mid-to-upper 50s. if you're heading to the 49ers game for tomorrow afternoon, mostly cloudy skies, chances of showers, temperatures in the mid-50s. here is a look ahead your extended forecast with a remainder of the week, take a look at thanksgiving, you can see a couple of dry days for

. today marked the opening of a photo exhibit featuring occupy protesters from all over the area, there are imaging from los angeles and new works being added as they come in. the gallery calls the show a vehicle for discussion about the occupy movement and the goals. the exhibit is on display at the studios on magnolia street
