work. they are still going through everything. we are putting it together for tonight at 6:00. live in san francisco, eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. former bart police officer johannes mehserle spent part of this day on the witness stand in a civil trial brought by a man who said his rights were violated. it happened on the bart platform in oakland. ktvu's rita williams is live that courthouse where today's session just wrapped up. >> former police officer johannes mehserle just finished testifying here about an hour ago after four hours on the stand. >> good, thank you. >> reporter: this is the first picture of johannes mehserle we have seen since my interview in jail 14 months ago. he had just been convict offend

man lotter for killing oscar grant. now that he served his time johannes mehserle was at the san francisco federal building with four other bart police officers defending themselves in a lawsuit filed by another passenger in a another case six weeks before the shooting of oscar grant. >> one of the officers. >> reporter: kenneth carrethers said the officers used excessive force and violated his civil rights at the bart station, november 2008. >> i got a black eye. >> reporter: kenneth carrethers said he did nothing. >> this is about kenneth carrethers who spoke his mind but never touched an officer. >> i am just glad the truth is coming out. >> reporter: johannes mehserle testified today as two other officers did that kenneth carrethers came at them with threats. >> i don't believe there is any

evidence that would suggest they did anything but told the truth. >> what happened to oscar grant is direct relation to what happened to kenneth carrethers when johannes mehserle arrested him. >> reporter: the jury will have to decide if the officers vierated kenneth carrethers' civil rights and if so how much bart has to pay him. i learned that after court ended a few minutes ago, johannes mehserle's father took a picture of oscar grant's uncle with his cell phone outside the courtroom but

inside the federal building. any photography is not allowed in the federal building. it was brought to the judge's attention and i am told that johannes mehserle's father will be barred from attending anymore of this trial which resumed on monday. reporting live, rita williams, ktvu channel 2 news. we are on storm watch tonight. rain is on the way and snow on the way to the sierra. our chief meteorologist bill martin will tellous how close the rain is, first to ken pritchett in the sierra. any snow fall today? >> reporter: right now here it is not snowing but it is very cold. it is windy. if you are headed up to the sierra be prepared and be prepared for traffic. thanksgiving is the busiest time of the year in terms of traffic. as you can see right now, the interstate is fairly clear. >> reporter: this morning traffic was light. but caltrans says 2-3,000 cars per hour will pass over the summit of interstate 80.

investigators are looking for the cause of his house fire. it started this morning and sent smoke into the air. university police are investigating an attempted purse snatching on san jose state this morning. police say a employee was standing near the atm kiosk this morning when a man tried to grap her purse. she ran back to call -- to her office rather. 35 and 50 years old with a medium to light complexion, standing about six feet tall and weighing about 150 lbs. he was wearing a light gray zip- up hoodie, blue cotton running pants and tennis shoes that may have been black and white. no arrests have been made. police say a protesters

admitted to vandalizic -- vandalizing banks. police released this surveillance video. jared bedecarre confessed to tagging the banks and he painted foreclosed on four backs. he used washable paint so there was no permanent damage. freddy mac said mortgage rates took a drop this week. the average 30 year fixed came in at 3.98%. and 4/100 hire than the record low 7 weeks ago, up 3.94%. the dow fell 236 points to close at 11,258. the nasdaq fell 61 to 2,460.

volunteers and staff at the san francisco food bank are packing up more food to help the needy. the food bank is helping a record number of families. a million pound of groceries this season they will disribute. poultry, fruits and vegetables. they have teamed up with e&o trading company to help 10 families for a thanksgiving dinner tonight. >> the need is just as great in sonoma county. they have been serving free thanksgiving dinner to 500 people an hour. ktvu's rob roth is there and shows us how many people are still waiting to get in. rob? >> reporter: here at the fairgrounds, thanksgiving is coming early. take a look. this dining hall has been

packed since 11:00 this morning for people trying to grab a thanksgiving dinner. >> reporter: they will have fed more than 5,000 needy people. families, including this family. >> we don't have money. 78 special since he lost his job four months ago. they came here to celebrate thanksgiving and be around other people in similar situations. >> our food ran out and the rest of the hunt we got to worry about what we are going to eat for the next day. >> reporter: this effort is organized by the gasple mission in santa rosa with the help of

ktvu's alex savage has more. >> reporter: this boarder up business burned a couple weeks back and early this morning the market caught fire. an arson investigation is underway and the sheriff's department says fuel was used to start both fires. >> reporter: fire tore threw after 3:00 this morning. the owner is in tears. >> i lost everything. nothing left. >> reporter: he says the fire did a half million dollars in damage to his store and investigators believe it was intentionally set. the first drew crews smell fuel. three separate fires were started. the first started with this display, the other two were near the back corner of the store. the fire came two weeks
