neighbors here told me they never heard any arguments going on in the past and they were shocked to see the scene here today. >> i mean they have this crime scene tape from here to down there, never happened never happened before. >> reporter: investigators aren't saying how many shots were fired. however i can tell you from talking to a neighbor here she heard the shots for herself. sounded like five shots in rapid succession. i can tell you it is santa rosa police that are on scene right now as a matter of protocall because this shooting involved an officer from the sebatopol police department. they have a search warrant for the house this involved. they at this point are not naming the man who was shot and killed or the officer who was involved here tonight. we're going to continue to gather information, of course we'll have much more coming up tonight at 10:00. we're live here in sebatopol.

in newark a man tried to do his own fire fighting to keep flames from spreading at his home. firefighters say that one resident needed medical treatment but it was for something unrelated to the fire. and a neighbor who tried to fight the fire with a garden hose suffered minor smoke inhalation. >> i want to stop it with the water, trying to protect my property. and the police some police come here and tried to push me out. he said, you get out of here. i said i want to turn off my water. nobody let me do it. >> reporter: he says fire crews pushed him away from the yard for his own protection. it's believed the fire began in the bedroom but firefighters are still looking into the cause. the use of pepper pray by protesters at uc davis has become a movement on the university grounds. protesters say they are in the for the long haul and they have

the community support to do it. ken pritchett has the story. >> reporter: when i was here it started with a dozen tents. now you see close to 60 tents. and monday is the day of the planned general strike. occupy uc davis protesters had their thanksgiving dinner this afternoon despite the cold and rain. >> the community is providing. we had, you know people after people coming to give us food. we've had one group that came and baked us this whole batch of cookies this morning. it's just piling up. >> reporter: among those bringing food and supplies was margaret ong inspired by the events that sparked this encampment at uc davis. >> when i saw the episode of the pepper spray, i was, i was just very upset that this happened. >> reporter: on friday two campus police officers used pepper spray on protesters who refused to disperse.

those officers and the police chief were placed on administrative leave by the chancellor who apologized before thousands of students and faculty at a monday rally. the chancellor has since allowed this camp to take hold by providing bathroom facilities and even food. >> the chancellor was so kind enough to bring us a bunch of thanksgiving meals. what she did not realize is we have funds of food, we have tons of community support and what we needed was blankets. >> reporter: tom he did not want to give his last name says this encampment will stay for the long term until every individual protesters desire for change is satisfied. >> so everyone has to be right with the entirety of our system for us to leave. so it's an indefinite occupation. >> reporter: this situation bears some resemblance to occupy oakland in that there was a police crack down. there was a significant backlash, and the tents were allowed to go back into place.

the mayor of oakland allowed the encampment to return there only to wipe it or to have the police go in weeks later and the people here at this encampment say they feel that they are safe for now. in davis, ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. in san jose today, occupy protesters staged a new action where they once had tents. robert handa here to tell us how it could lead to more aggressive action soon. >> reporter: while there wasn't anything going on inside, there has been plenty of activity outside of city hall with the return of occupy san jose. >> reporter: it was once a familiar site, the symbolic tent and 20 to 30 protesters with signless. but occupy san jose banned the

protests. >> we're not here to reoccupy but we're here to have our thanksgiving in our home and to show to everybody that we're still here and osj is not going away. >> reporter: the get together did seem more like a gathering of friend than demonstration. the bonding is crucial to keep the group from splintering after losing it's camp and to keep a united front as it fights with the city to get a permit that would allow them to set up another encampment. >> we all just fought through the garbage that was spewed out against us. and we're a lot stronger for it. >> reporter: while occupy san jose tries to work out a more permanent arrangement with city hall, . they hinted they might gather with other occupy groups on black friday. >> we would support any occupy

movement. we might be doing the same. >> reporter: although what occupy san jose might do next is unpredictable. the group is compromising a plan with the city. that will allow them to occupy throughout the day but not overnight. we could see demonstrations outside stores like best buy as part of occupy black friday. participates say they want shoppers to think about where their money is going. but a number of people we spoke with were skeptical. >> we need stuff for our family, i work every day and i think this is the best deal i'm going to get. they're not writing me a check, they're not saving me any money so i'm here. >> reporter: the occupy movements are encouraging people to spend their money at local businesses. ktvu's david stevenson is in san francisco where the frenzy shopping is getting an

early start this year, david. >> reporter: frank just take a look the line stretching down into the corner. people have been lining up since this morning anxious to get a black friday special. this year some stores are saying customers don't have to wait overnight in the cold for a good deal. >> i'm looking to get the tv, they have a 42-inch flat screen tv for $199. >> reporter: campers outside this san francisco best buy says black friday is worth staying away from home. >> my daughter is cooking right now. hopefully she's bring us some food later. >> reporter: more retailers are opting to open earlier by welcoming customers inside on thanksgiving day. >> it's busy. i think people were out and about and they really wanted to go shopping on thanksgiving. a lot of customers were asking us if we're open for

thanksgiving. >> reporter: san francisco's old navy flagship store today officered 3d glasses for customers. in daily city, the sports authority offered aggressive deals to create loyal customers. >> when you come in you get everything you buy 25% off, in addition to that we reward you a $10 cash card to come back and shop with us again. >> reporter: target opened 29 stores nationally on thanksgiving day. this daily city store wasn't one of them. though shoppers said they are willing to play the waiting game. >> actually i'm not missing thanksgiving because my sister and i are switching off. she's cooking at the house. she's cooking the turkey and ham. she'll be here, i'll be here for a couple of hours and she'll be here to shop with me. >> reporter: shoppers increasingly would rather shop late on thanksgiving for a black friday bargain than try to get the same deal on friday morning. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. a bay area analyst is tracking trends in electronic shopping this thanksgiving.

so far he says the numbers are up and that they're about to grow. >> we really start to see this grow is after people stop their thanksgiving dinner. what we call postpie purchasing. where people really start to rally back online. this will grow throughout the rest of the evening. >> ibm data says online shopping today is 20% higher compared to last thanksgiving and purchases made by mobile phones are up 15%. thanksgiving is proving to be a good day to hit the slopes in the sierra. sugar bowl opened its lift and one run to holiday skiers today. the conditions were a bit rainy but at least 250 people had arrived by noon. last year at this time, sugar bowl had more than 100-inches of snow on the ground and 80% of its terrain open. but the resort says that was exceptional and many years just being able to open by thanksgiving is considered well, gravy. ktvu.com has lots of resources to track holiday

travel. pilot error is the likely cause of a airplane crash. the pilot of the twin engine cessna was given instruction from take off from palo alto but they say he was told take off was at his own risk due to near zero visibility. the plane ended up crashing in an east palo alto neighborhood just seconds after taking off. the report states pilot douglas bourne failed to follow the standard instrument departure as instructed. thousands of rescuers combed the wreckage from a small plane that slammed into the mountains east of phoenix arizona but they don't expect to see any survivors. we first showed you the flames last night. it's believed six people were on board including three children. so far the sheriff's department says they have only found the

it was a fairly smooth ride today for most holiday traálars in the bay area but some -- holiday travelers in the area but some did have problems getting home for thanksgiving. mechanical issues delays moore's plane, then there were weather delays. she was turn over to a whole new airline and the bottom line

is, she's going to miss thanksgiving in philadelphia. >> i will arrive at 1 1:00 a.m., dinner is over, so i will miss my whole family. >> reporter: airport officials say things should be getting back on schedule right about now. a young bay area boy who survived a life threatening health scare three years ago is living up to his promise to pay it forward. ktvu's maureen naylor reports it's gaining him some national recognition. >> reporter: a seemingly hot meal of turkey and gravy gave many reasons to be grateful. >> i didn't have any where to go, you know what i'm saying, i really enjoyed this. >> reporter: joe prompted by a high school freshman who made it his might be to give it back. >> if i never would have been to the hospital i would have never been able to give back to these people. it's like how, someone i didn't know gave something to me. what i needed which was a

liver. >> reporter: after receiving a liver donation, he vowed to help others. >> we thought it was going to be just one day, then it grew. >> reporter: it grew to a monthly give away. >> i have nine daughters, you know. and to see a 14-year-old boy do something for the people, that means a lot to me. >> reporter: this year the group handed out hats, gloves and scarves. >> they go a long ways. something in my stomach, a warm head and some warm hands. >> reporter: now he's been nominated as a hero. >> i'm not really a hero i just wanted to do my job. >> reporter: part of that job is encouraging people of all ages to sign up to be an organ donor.

>> reporter: mike's meals will serve 800 people which is a lot less than it does the rest of the year, and they say that's because there are so many hand outs this time of year. it took 500 volunteers several days to prepare the meal. more than 1,000 turkeys were donated to feed the hungry and the homeless. including 200 from san francisco major ed lee and 400 from safeway. the project open hand kitchen was busy cooking and then delivering 2,600 meals for those with long term illnesses who cannot leave their home. join ktvu the day after thanksgiving to make sure those in need stay warm this winter. tomorrow drop off your lightly

used or new coats. a number of on air folks will be there all day to collect your donations. tomorrow, aaa is issuing a tow service. until 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning folks can call aaa and ask for a tipsy tow. they will give a person a tow and 10-mile car tow. a man is in custody in a fatal stabbing. sheriff deputies responded to a fight around 9:20 last night. the victim was found with multiple stab wounds. the contra costa sheriff's office says the suspect is being held on $1 million bail. oakland police are investigating an accident that involved a truck. we're told the truck hit a

black sedan before smashing into the building there. police say that both drivers on the scene claimed to have the right of way. the building was empty and neither driver was injured. a quarantine has been lifted at a north bay nursing home following an outbreak of noro virus. authorities say they returned operations to normal last night. 81 people got sick during the outbreak and the facility was under restriction for just under a week. the decision to lift the quarantine is allowing residents to spend thanksgiving with family and friends. and welcome back, the skies are starting to clear at least in the high clouds and the low clouds. the fog trying to reform. we're looking for an end to the showers in the next few hours. maybe a sprinkle. but the main rain is over for now. live storm tracker 2 does a number of things. for one it shows us the rain. i stuck in the due temperature,

the temperature reaches 46 in napa or 47 in napa you get fog. look how close those cities are to the dewpoint. farmers-- a lot of agriculturists pay a lot of attention to dewpoints because once fog forms -- let's say the dewpoint is 40 degrees, the temperature warms up a little bit. so you can tell which nights are going to be freezing and not freezing based on the dewpoint temperature. the temperatures will be high, temperatures are going to warm. you won't have any trouble getting around in the bay area. i think we're going to see plenty of fog in the north bay valleys around 11:00, or 12:00 tonight. we're headed for some cool overnight lows, valley fog in the valleys. the valley fog will be worse or the thickness in the north bay valley. tomorrow morning with the fog,

slowly burning off. we're going to end up with high pressure, dry weather and partly cloudy skies. the thing that's interesting here, daytime highs tomorrow will warm up. computer model doesn't show rain anymore. all we're doing is we go through saturday, and sunday watch the clouds come in on sunday. so more clouds on sunday. but really nice bay area holiday weekend in store. rain stays stays warm so we're in good shape there. warmer still as we head into the weekend. really nice here. partly cloudy, mostly cloudy but i think the real weather story will be the fog. lots of out of towners driving around the bay area and they don't expect to bump into it. it's a nasty -- >> that real thick fog can be scary. >> tonight is going to be a good one too. tonight at 7:00. we just got video of a reunion

thousands of people started out their thanksgiving by burning off a few predinner calories. some 20,000 people hit the streets of san jose for the seventh annual applied material silican valley turkey trot. the race raised about $7,000 for the food bank and two other charities. more than 4,500 people laced up their sneakers for the sports and fitness turkey trot. runners some even in costumes raised thousands of dollars for public schools. what would thanksgiving be without some good football games today fred. >> as a matter of fact there is one already understood way. the harbaugh bowl underway. second quarter highlights at 10:00 tonight. the detroit lions big man earns the turkey of the day award.

lions hosted green bay today, watch the right foot of sue as he gets off packers, evan detrick smith. sue stomps on smith's arm. green bay scores two touchdowns under three next offensive plays. aaron rogers to jones. jones races 65 yards. that makes it 21-0. packers now 11-0 for the first time in franchise history. lions fall to 7-0. while they look like a play off contenders at time they lose their eighth straight thanksgiving game. green bay wins 27-15. dallas cowboys got their swagger back. they hosted miami entering the fourth quarter. but tony romo, watch him roll out. that's robertson's second score of the day. but this game features five
