good morning, thank you for joining us. it's friday, november 259 i'm pam cook. >> and i'm claudine wong. we want to start you out with a quick look at weather and traffic. hi steve. >> hello claudine and pamela. light rain around redwood city. back over toward hayward. i don't think there is much to make it down to san jose. highs today partly cloudy. upper 50s, low 60s. here is tara. here's a look at east shore freeway where traffic is flowing well. and along 880 at the oakland coliseum traffic also flowing nicely. we do have problems with muni in san francisco. we will let you know about it coming up. we begin with developing news from the east bay. a person is under arrest. the search continues though for more people involved in a shooting outside a san leandro

walmart. ktvu channel 2 reporter kraig debro is live outside the store right now where police remain outside. you can see behind you. kraig. >> reporter: police are still here. very quickly before we get into the story i want to show you one thing over my shoulder here. police have this quarantined off here. there is about 10-12 cars in here. people that owned these cars are stuck inside the store. police say one group of people was trying to rob another group of people. happen to be members of the same family in this parking lot. police say the family members didn't give up their goods right away which is a bad idea police say. and during the course of a struggle one of the people was shot. there was already a san leandro police officer or two of them in the parking lot patrolling as well as walmart security guards. officers were flagged down. they called for help. the family member already

detained one of the suspects. >> there was another person being restrained by a couple civilians. what we think happened is it was a robbery gone bad. the victims family fought with the robbers. >> reporter: now that person was taken to san leandro police station. police don't know if that person was the actual shooter or if it was somebody else. we had a witness we spoke to. she heard two groups of people arguing. the shooter got in a red car and left. police are still talking to witnesses. i got an e-mail into walmart for a comment 37 i talked to a witness over the phone. she was inside the store and saw both groups of people arguing. reporting live until san leandro kraig debro. a walmart store in arizona is back open after a thanksgiving day bomb scare. police officers evacuated the

store near phoenix after an employee found a strange package inside the break room refrigerator. a bomb squad responded to the scene with a robot. officers determined there was no threat and let the shoppers line back up for black friday. >> black friday is bringing in bargain hunters. lorain joins us live from the sun valley mall. hi lorain. >> reporter: hi. great deals out here. you know 4,000 people were lining up outside the mall at midnight last night here. that is because of deals like this one. see that sign. take 40% off your entire purchase all day long here at the mall. it's not just the great deals here that are bringing people. santa is on the way down here at the ice palace. he will be arriving at 8:00 a.m. with an ice princess. many people got here long

before that. take a look at sears this morning. they opened up at 4:00 a.m.. the mall itself officially opened at 5:00 a.m. and the line for sports authority was extra long this morning because they were giving out free gift cards up to $500 to every person that came in that door. of course all the shopping can be exhausting. we found one lady completely passed out. her empty coffee cup empty. one group of ladies we talked to said they had been up since 8:00 p.m. last night. >> we are veterans of it. we plan 12 months a year for this one day. we know we will do it. every year. >> we actually bring her child and her friend to stand in line for us. >> reporter: now those ladies were actually bringing their bags to the car but they were not leaving. they were putting their bags in the car so they can empty their hands and come back and shop

lists. the federation reports 32% of consumers plan to buy electronics this year. that is the highest level since 2008. the city of oakland is touting plaid friday instead. city leaders are urging residence to shop at and support local businesses. today's campaign keep downtown in the black will include music, raffles, and special discounts at the area stores. two ladies that own an oakland art gallery hatched the black friday idea. it has become a nation-wide trend now. some people will be staying home on black friday in favor of shopping online. if you are one of those online shoppers, you may owe more money than you think. the extra tax that comes with online purchases and why it's up to you to pay it. santa rosa police are investigating alabama officer involved shooting that left one person dead. the confrontation happened yesterday outside the redwood grove apartments. police say a woman was alone in

her apartment and called 911 to report an angry exboyfriend banging on her back door. when the police officer arrived he realized the suspect had a gun. the officer shot and killed the man. they are now conducting interviews to find out what led up to that shooting. >> domestic violence is a real unknown. you don't know all the emotion that is behind it. how long it has been going on. the build up. you don't know what happened earlier in the day. your hands are tied when you get on a scene like that. now that thanksgiving is over walnut creek is focusing on christmas. the holiday tree will be it will at 6:00 tonight. there will also be music, free candy canes, and santa will make a special appearance. there will also be a big chris mass tree lighting in downtown san jose.

the 32nd annual christmas in the park kicks off at 6:30 tonight. each year more than 450,000 people stop by to look at the animated displays. that event had been in danger because of the city's budget problems but donations are helping keeping it going this year. that is nice. time now is 6:07. tara has been following those problems on muni. >> muni service has been halted in san francisco due to an incident involving a person verses a muni train. this will obviously create problems for folks trying to get downtown to shop. now according to sfpd around 5:00 this morning a train struck a person walking on the tracks. witnesses say he tried to move out of the way but the train did clip him and received life threatening injuries. it happened under ground. so bus shuttles are now running from downtown to the west portal station to get you where you need to go this morning. up next we will take a live

look at the bay bridge. actually this is san francisco 101 on the left hand side there folks heading toward downtown. a bit windy out there. traffic flowing nicely. finally 237 in milpitas we are seeing a lot of folks on the roads. perhaps any way wherever you need to get this morning you will not have too much trouble. here is steve. >> thank you tara. we have a little system going through. oakland over to sfo we've had light rain. it's about gone. it's falling apart. i will show you in a second. after that things -- bless you claudine wong. things start to calm down here and warm up. you can see it right there. over to hayward. the 880, 580 split there over by san mateo bridge. a little bit of drizzle. 47 santa rosa. probably getting clearing taking place to the north. a lot of upper 40s or right at 50 for san francisco.

this will be it for awhile. pattern looks really quiet. in fact, last couple of days of november maybe early december we are not expecting any rain. but that is what forecast models are saying. there will be thick inland fog. no doubt about that. highs 60s to near 70 degrees. especially as we head toward sunday and monday. it's a dry pattern next into next weekend. partly cloudy. very light rain in the morning. upper 50s low 60s. it will be really close. no matter where you are. sonoma 59. 62 antioch. 61 in walnut creek. pleasanton at 61. low 60s for los gatos, morgan hill. woodside san mateo at 60. and 61 menlo park. upper 60s pacifica. fog nights and morns in the valley. temperatures will be warming up. upper 60s to near 70s. >> thank you, steve.

there are no longer any emergency oxygen masks or tanks in the bathrooms of commercial airplanes. the faa ordered them removed.

a notice posted on the faa website said they removed 6,000 planes in march. emergency masks were not effected by that order. crews in arizona are working to recover the bodies of the victims in wednesday night firey plane crash. three adults and three children were killed. the pilot had just picked up its children to celebrate thanksgiving. they are doing everything they can to consult the victims families. >> these families are obviously heartbroken, traumatized over the loss of their loved ones. >> one of the three children killed was autistic and the man believed to be a co-pilot of that plane was soon to be married. the recovery effort is extremely difficult because of the rough terrain. there was no indication the plane was in distress. centers for disease control says it looks like the virus originated in pigs.

the cdc says it has seen a total of 18 cases of this new virus overs last two years. that indicates it does not spread as fast as the h1n1 sprain that sickened thousands of people in 2009. central oklahoma should be getting used to earthquakes. it shook the region yesterday. it was centered less than ten miles south of sparks. about 35 miles east of oklahoma city. emergency officials say it did not cause any damages. earlier this month a 5.6 magnitude quake damaged more than 40 homes in that same area. a thanksgiving day fire damaged one home in newark. firefighter were called to the scene yesterday afternoon. neighbors tried to fight the fire with a garden hose but they were unsuccessful. firefighters say it looks like the fire began in the bedroom. they are still not sure of the exact cause. sonoma county is updating the public of a controversial

new policy allowing -- the county hasn't noticed an increase in crimes or traffic violations. critics argue the policy could encourage more illegal immigrants to drive without a license. supporters say the poll avoids unnecessary arrests. many people are out of the stores this black friday. some stay home in favor of shopping online. today and then on cyber monday. online shopping for cyber monday is expected to reach $1.2 billion this year. research group predicts holiday on line sales in november and december will reach $59.5 billion. that is a 15% increase from last year. also this year experts say we are likely to see increased shopping from smart phones and tablets. if you do shop an line the state says you may owe taxes on your purchase. it's called used tax.

many retailers that sale online and out of state don't collect that tax or don't tell the buyers they may owe the state tax. collection of the taxes but it does not go into effect until next year. until then it's up to the buyer. voters are soon going to have to decide whether to extend a sales tax. libraries in the county have received funding from a one eighth of a penny sales tax since 1998. that tax is set to expire in october of 2014. they have agreed to place a 15- year extension on that tax on the june ballot. california lawmakers are getting ready to turn in their state owned cars. originally the state planned on giving the lawmakers a $300 a month transportation allowance. but now lawmakers can't get the allowance because the commission that approved the change overstepped its

authority. they will get reimbursed 55- cents a mile to use their personal cars. the auto show is gear up. the latest models are on display. this year the show is featuring alternative fuel and electric vehicles for the model year 2012. and there is simulators so you can test drive those cars. right now 6:17. we want to check in on the roads. tara is in for sal. >> just before 5:00 this morning a train struck a person walking on the tracks. witnesses say that the person tried to move out of the way but the train clipped him and he received life threatening injuries. the victim was take ton sf general. it happened under ground between the montgomery and embarcadero stations.

along the bay bridge here is a live look at the span. traffic is flowing well in and out of san francisco. down in the south bay 280 in san jose this is near the bird avenue exit. a bus is stalled in the slow lane. here is steve. thank you. one little system looks like it's just falling apart. right about on the peninsula and there you go. mostly cloudy skies. temperatures a lot of moisture in the air. fog will be an issue. temperatures though in the 40s right now due to the cloud cover. right about at 50 for san francisco. not much left of this system. just a little bit. 40s to right at 50s. everyone is close here. san jose, livermore at 46 degrees. after today though high pressure says i'm your fair weather friend. everything is going north. way to the north. partically -- partly cloudy

light rain. today they are in the very low 60s. tomorrow mid 60s. we will see upper 60s by sunday and near 70 by monday. it looks really quiet in the middle of next week. if you think more people are out on black friday this year, you are correct. 34% of consumers are expected to shot today. that is up from 34%. they are expected to spend $500 billion during the shopping season. that is up from last year. stock markets in asia and europe are lower today as there seems to be no end in sight. even germany's budget calls for increased borrowing. they will try to end a six-day losing streak. the trading session will be a short one with markets closing at 1:00. a proposed surcharge on plastic shopping bags is going to move forward. there are two meetings to talk

about that surcharge. under this proposal alameda county shopper will pay 10 cents for plastic bags. a group representing makers of plastic bags is threatening to sue alameda county if that surcharge is put in place. rescuing dogs from a war zone. >> this little girl was as a puppy being stoned by the afghan police. >> the thanksgiving reunion between a u.s. marine and the dog he befriended on the front line. and a kitten trapped below ground. we will show you the long rescue to set her free. highway 24 through lafayette traffic is looking good at this hour. we'll have more traffic hot spots coming up.

coming up later. that is a sweet little sound. firefighters in san diego county spent their thanksgiving trying to rescue a kitten trapped in an under ground pipe. emergency crews had to be creative. they created a catch pole. it took several tries before rescuers could get the wire around here and finally pull her out. the kitten was apparently a stray. one of the police officers helped in the rescue now plans to adopt her. 13 dogs are now in the u.s. after being rescued from the streets of afghanistan. this is u.s. marine ward vanalsteen and khloe. she was adopted by him in afghanistan. she says the dogs are often used as weapons against u.s. soldiers. >> the taliban knows that it's so demoralizing for when they

kill these dogs. so they target them. >> the dogs were rescued and brought here by now zad dogs. american troops spent their last thanksgiving in iraq. in baghdad military men and women enjoyed a traditional turkey dinner yesterday. one soldier commented it never compares to his mom's cooking but it was good. arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords spent part of her thanksgiving serving food to troops at an air force base. it was giffords first event since she was shot in the head last january. she used only her left hand as she served food alongside her husband. give giffords is an inspiration to the troops. >> we have a lot of members

that sustain battle injuries. they are dealing with a lot of the same issues the congresswoman has had to deal with. >> giffords continue to under go inintensive rehabilitation. they asked a member of giffords staff to take part in the meal. a tree lighting ceremony in san francisco's square helped kick off the ceremony today. the tree lighting in the square will be at 5:30 tonight. police are now calling it a robbery gone bad. outside a walmart parking lot. the search this hour for everyone involved responsible for a black friday early morning attack. the holiday shopping season is well under way. we will tell you about some of the strategies and budgets that black friday shoppers say they are sticking to this year. the opening bell is about to ring on wall street. we'll have the early stock numbers for you.

learning more about the shooting outside the san leandro walmart. kraig debro joins us. he just spoke to a witness. >> reporter: a witness and i just spoke to police again. they are reviewing the security tape. we do have a conflict between what police are saying and what my witness says. behind me you can see police are still here. now they have the yellow plaquered out in the parking lot. usually marking evidence. the victims clothes are still in the apartment. the victim is said to be in stable condition. this appears to be according to our witness this appears to have started just tension related to holiday shopping. the police are saying what happened is a family was inside shopping. they got what they wanted. when they came out they ran into a group of people. those people demanded the family hand over their goods. they struggled. somebody pulled out a gun and

shot the victim. police actually don't know if they have the shooter in custody. thigh are not sure if the shooter is still outstanding. we have other witnesses that say the shooter got in a car and sped off. a woman we talked to said the two groups of people that were inside the store arguing and that is what led up to the shooting. >> i saw like the one guy argue. i think the security he did ask the one guy top leave and then he left. but then as they were leaving and i was coming out the store they were like continuing to argue at that time. and then i just walking fast. and then i got in the car. by the time i got in the car you can hear police coming and everything. >> reporter: just to be sure i asked the witness if those people she saw in the store was the same group of people in the after math of the shooting. he said they were. again i talked to him on the

phone about this. he was looking at the surveillance tape. he didn't see the suspects inside the store so far. we will have to clear that up. reporting live in san leandro kraig debro. black friday shopping at a north carolina mall got off to a scary start after shots rang out. detectives say the gunman and another man ran away after the shooting. amazingly no one was hurt. police are still trying to track down two suspects. los angeles police are searching for a woman that sprayed pepper spray at fellow shoppers. that attack happened after 10:30 last night. the woman armed herself with that spray to gain an advantage in fight for merchandise. 20 customers including children were injured. the lines are growing all over the bay area as stores are opening for black friday. allie rasmus is at great mall

in milpitas where people have been braving the crowds since midnight. we have seen a lot of people with a lot of bags. >> reporter: a lot of bags. there is a little bit of a lull. a lot of people that got here before the doors opened are making their way toward the exit or they have left or in some cases like these young ladies they are sitting down on the ground surrounded by their bags and stuff just taking a break and breather. some people have been here since midnight and going from store to store ever since then. we have seen many shoppers with bags loaded in their arms. we did see one family at 4:30 this morning that remembered a kiddy cart even though they did not have kids with them. they rented the cart so they would have help hauling around their stuff. the shoppers we talked to said they have a budget and strategy they are sticking to on this black friday. one drove here all the way from tracy said she planned ahead so she could spend more.

-- occupy movement will target major retailers in a nation- wide campaign. some of the big name stores that could come under fire today. new youtube video shows a scuffle during an occupy oakland protest. you can see oakland police officers tackling somebody to the ground yesterday afternoon. it happened when a truck tried to deliver portable toilets to plaza. officers ordered the truck to leave saying protestors did not have the proper permits. and that apparently led to the scuffle. officers arrested one person. z thanksgiving brought occupy protestors back to oakland city hall for thanksgiving dinner. protestors say they are not reoccupying city hall they just want to show a united front. they are in negotiate negotiations to allow all day protests without camping.

bart plans to run longer trains throughout the day. bart also plans on running longer trains sunday to the oakland and san francisco airports for all of those returning home from their holiday trips. time now is 6:36. if you are heading out on the roads, tara is watching this accident with muni all morning. what is going on? >> we have new video coming in on this muni accident. we were able to get under ground and get a closer look at where the accident actually happened. police say just before 5:00 this morning a train struck a person walking on the track. witnesses say he tried to move out of the way but it clipped him. he received life threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital. it happened under ground here. now muni is offering bus shuttles from downtown to the west portal stations. no word on when the muni trains will be back in service. in the east bay traffic

pretty steady. you never know what it will be like the day after thanksgiving. just use this day to relax or shop. in the south bay 101 in san jose northbound 101 traffic as you drive toward the airport no delays. here is steve. thank you. a very good morning. we have a mostly cloudy skies. a few breaks in those clouds. temperatures in the 40s for many. almost across the board here. a couple little very low 50s. there goes our system from yesterday. and right there. just that little guy. looks like it's washing itself out. looks like this is it for november. unless there is a tremendous hiccup in the forecast. i don't think there is. it looks really quiet. we had a little stretch there. not a lot of rain we had some. we had wetter months than that. at least the pattern did give us some rain. there is not much left now. there is a ban going through the north bay. it looks like it's falling

apart. maybe mists or drizzle there is not much left. 40s for everybody. upper 40s for everybody. after that this system high pressure is here to stay for awhile. it will kick in and send everything way to the north. it will warm us up by long range. by that i mean next five or seven days. expect for thick inland fog. highs will be in the 60s to 70s. it will be a dry pattern into the middle of next week. partly cloudy after that light rain has ended. 50s and 60s. temperatures coming up a little bit for some and holding steady. there will not be a big difference in the highs today. starting tomorrow there will be a little bit of a separation. low 60s here from fremont to gilroy. a little cooler near the coast. still not bad. upper 50s to low 60s. fog sun mild. and then it will be warmer. in fact upper 60s to near 70s

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning new. police are still at the scene of a black friday shooting outside a san leandroball mort. investigators believe a group of people went up to another group and demanded their belongs. the gunshot victim has been taken to the hospital and is at last word in stable condition. officers have one suspect in custody but they are looking

for others. right now san francisco muni is running bus shuttles downtown. that happened at about 5:00 between montgomery and the embarcadero station. the man is taken to the hospital and is said to have life threatening injuries. tara moriarty have the latest in about five minutes. sebastopol police say domestic violence forced an officer to shoot and kill a suspect. the patrol officer responded to a 911 call to a woman because the exboyfriend would not leave. suspect was armed with a gun and shot and killed by the officer. an outside police department is investigating. time now is 6:44. the black friday frenzy is bringing shoppers to bay area malls. we understand some shoppers showed upright at midnight. right? >> reporter: yeah they started

there on one of the upper levels of the macy's store. these pictures provided by photo journalist sid who is out braving the crowds. you can see the doors are open. people out there heading on in to shop. a big store so you may be able to find some spots in there that are not super crowded. it should be a long day of looking for deals there in san francisco. midnight door busters and deep discounts also has occupy protestors out as well. they are calling for the occupation of big box retailers. stores like best buy and target could become the sites of pickets and boycotts. the national occupy black friday movement wants consumers to avoid big box stores and instead pen their money at locally owned businesses. >> i think when we can go out and support local businesses and local vendors and mom and pop or mom and mom and pop and pop shops that is awesome. >> we need stuff for our

the pilot of that helicopter that crashed in new zealand while the cameras were rolling. boy just incredible. that helicopter was helping to install a christmas tree when the blades got caught in cable. that's when the choppers tail snapped and crashed to the ground. the pilot walked away with only crashes. he says it's all thanks to a seat belt. >> that is the belt which is attached to the floor of the aircraft. and you know if i wasn't wearing that, it would have been all over. >> now he says the accident has not destroyed his love of flying and he's looking to get back into the air as soon as he can. we have a new update from the family of injured giants fan bryan stow. coming up we will take a look at the promising news his family shared on thanksgiving. 6:49 is the time right now.

back in to tara moriarty. muni getting things back up and running. >> we received word those trains should be running in two house. they had to shut down service. it happened around 5:00 this morning when a train struck a person walking on the tracks under ground between the montgomery and embarcadero stations. in the east bay highway 24 through lafayette no delays on the right hand side there as you drive toward the caldecott. finally in the south bay we do have an incident to report here on 17 northbound lark avenue. little vehicle collided with someone. it's all been moved over to the right hand shoulder. you can see a little bit of backup being caused there. 6:50 let's check in with steve. thank you very much tara. we do have mostly cloudy skies. there is breaks in the clouds.

we had light rain go through. it looks like it's all done. temperatures in the 40s to right about 50 degrees in san francisco. we'll end up with a lot of upper 50s and low 60s today. all signs point toward a much warmer pattern. a little bit of a system right there kind of holding on a little bit. a little band went through us. after today it looks like the rain is done here. forecasted highs san francisco 59. look at tomorrow. by tomorrow 66 santa rosa. 63 for san francisco. concord 65. san jose upper 60s. these are forecasted they could change. the trend is to get no more rain in here and bring temperatures up. 40s for almost everybody. there is the 50 mountain view. it looks like the pattern is changing a little bit. we will go very quiet. there is a lot of moisture in the air. there will be a lot of night and morning fog. once that sets up it's tough to budge.
