complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 news at noon. as black friday shoppers were inside, shots rang out outside an east bay store and we just got new information from the victim's family. good afternoon. i'm claudine wong in for tory campbell. the news that began early on this black friday in what police are calling a robbie gone bad. it happened at the wal-mart on

hisperian boulevard. we have more on the victim's condition and who is in custody. kraig? >> reporter: the man who police have in custody may not be the shooter. look at the volvo there. that's the family's car. the family had been together hours earlier having thanksgiving dinner. >> the victim's mother and sister were black shopping on friday at southland mall when they heard about the shooting. >> one of my friends came up and said, oh, my god, oh, my god, someone got shot. >> reporter: the mother drove on the way home from that area and even told her sister but not even even dreaming that it was her son. >> they came in and jumped him and his cousins, all for a radio. a car radio.

>> reporter: >> reporter: -- people are just getting crazy now. >> police say that the try yo were standing around this f- 350. two men got out and demanded the merchandise. >> during the struggle, we believe that one of the suspects pulled out the gun, shot one of the victims. >> reporter: wounded, morello and his cousins chased one suspect down and held them for police. a witness said that the shooter fled in the car. the victim was taken to the hospital center. >> this is the holidays. we are supposed to be out giving thanks and being thankful for family. >> she and her family are thankful that chris toifers alive. police say they need the public's help identifying the other suspects. they are hoping that many among the hundreds who were here will call them and help them with more details. kraig, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thanks, kraig.

things also got ugly at a wal-mart store in los angeles. police are searching for a woman who used pepper spray on shoppers. it was all over an xbox game and a wii game. 20 customers, including children, had to be treated for exposure. less serious crimes can increase during the holiday shopping season. coming up, you'll hear some advice from some bay area police officers about how to keep your self from becoming a victim. malls across the bay area are filling up with black friday shoppers. thinks the view from news shopper 2. look at that parking lot. that is the south land mall in hayward. this is what it looked like at 7:45 this morning. as you can see, most of the prime spots were long gone by then. shoppers showed up for the midnight openings at macy's and koals. the rest of the malls opened their doors at 5:00 a.m. the malls tried to lure people

with a $10 gift card if they spend more than $100. >> who has a picture of their pet. >> stores pulled out all the stops. one family rented a kitty cart of sort. they didn't have a any kid but need add big stroller to carry all those bags of goodies they bought on this black fry day customers all said they came prepared. >> it is a strategy. you go in this line, you go standing in this line and go to this line. we run to our line and just know our spot. >> the great mall has 6100 parking spaces but shoppers will tell you it was more difficult to find a good parking spot than a bargain. and similar scenes played out throughout shopping malls across the bay area including the sun valley mall in concord. >> reporter: the sound of stores opening, better than holiday music to many black

friday shoppers. >> we do it every year. we plan 12 months a year for this one day because we know we're going to do it, every year. >> we actually bring her child and a friend to stand in line for us. >> they started looking for bargains at 8:00 p.m. last night. at sun valley mall, more than 1500 fans were outside. tryptophan did not stop shoppers coming here after stuffing themselves with turkey. >> here at h & m, some of the racks are empty, like these right here. that's because of deals like this. a fashionable kimono for five bucks or something that's always in style, a little black dress, check out the price tag, just five bucks. >> for the less prepared, the early hours proved too much. some didn't even bother changing out of their pajamas.

cynthia drove from vallejo to fair field to con court just to claim her spot in line at the sports authority. >> after this, i'll shop a few more stores and then i'll go home and rest. >> it's not all about consumerism. >> it's more ritual, just hanging out and spending time together. >> reporter: lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. here are some more details about black friday. the retail industry monitor shopper track expects black friday will be the busiest shopping day of the year for the eighth straight year. the next busy day is super saturday, the last saturday before christmas. the black friday term started in 1966 in philadelphia. it describes the heavy and loud traffic. in recent years, it means that businesses are in the black and making a profit. while crowds rushed the big box stores but the push was on

to push people into independent stores and out of big boxes. it is called plaid friday. >> reporter: we are on college avenue near the rock ridge bart. you see a lot of pedestrians on the streets but no long lines and no crowded parking lots to deal works all part of plaid friday, the push to focus on locally owned businesses. you see a lot of sales signs in store windows here. at least one of the store on this suite was open at self- a.m. and shoppers came to buy some gifts. >> purchased some bubble bath for babysitters, moms. >> some shoppers told us that they wanted to stay here. >> a lot of people are going up here. people are having a hard time it's also a nice atmosphere on

the street, when you have smaller stores. >> small store face big competitions this season. customers often come in and ask them to match the lower prices of billing box retailers and that is very you have to do since small stores can't buy the aim valium of goods that the major retails do. so they have found other ways to compete. >> we were matching prices and we decided to do that because we were losing so much money. now, we are offering store credit in the amount of the difference, the price difference. yeah, just hoping that at least it will keep the people that are loyal to the store coming back. >> now, the term plaid friday was coined by an oakland shop owner three years ago. why plaid? she says it's supposed to be a reference to how businesses like this are supposed to be part of the fabric of the community. while many people were out at the stores, some will wait

muni services back to normal after a light rail vehicle struck a pedestrian causing major delays. the person was hit about 5:00 this morning, below ground between the embarcadero and montgomery light rail stations. the victim was taken to san francisco general hospital. the ex-first and 10 of the victim's injury was not released. there are changes in b.a.r.t. service today to accommodate black friday shoppers. b.a.r.t. plans to run longer trains throughout the day. b.a.r.t. also plans to run longer services the. it is cold out there and some people are struggling to stay warm. ktvu journalists are stationed

told us that he can now push himself in a wheelchair. he is still recovering to fight from the brain injury that he suffered during an attack outside dodgers stadium back in march. >> a lot of cloud cover. mostly cloudy skies, a few clouds in the skies. weak list system did give us some light rain. that's gone. but low clouds from the byproduct of yesterday's system has moved off but not the cloud cover. the rain is ending. looks like we are done for the day. the 5 to 7-day outlook is very, very raw. unless something changes, it's not going to be one where we get much more rain. we look for warmer weather to kick in. we have a little stretch of rain but temperature now, signs point towards those going up in the next few days. tomorrow, don't be surprised if there are some jumps about five to six degrees, maybe some upper 60s and 70s possible as

we head towards monday on the high side if you don't get the fog. and therein lies the key. mostly cloudy skies will persist. i would think we'll start to clear tonight. 50s for many on the temperatures. they are stuck with low 60s but most locations around 56, 55, 57 degrees. high clouds moving in high pressure building in a big way. so the clouds will move north. thick inland rain and fog will build here. that's dry pattern until next week. looks like into the end of the month and maybe the first couple of days of december. we'll see but that's how it's looking right now. patchy fog. temperatures in the 60s for many, or upper 50s. there is really not much of a temperature spread here today but starting tomorrow, there will be. and then we'll take that into your weekend for warmer weather, especially on sunday

and monday, yes, that's 70 degrees temperature on the high side as we get toward early next week. >> unusual? >> we are due for that. >> we are so spoised here. what to we do? >> emergency crews are on the scene of a big water main break in south san francisco. acoeur d'alening to authority, it ruptured around 2009. the pipe is at elm street and tamarack lane. several streets are blocked off because of this torrent of water that is just pouring down the streets. there is no word on when that pipe will be fixed or when the water service will be restored. officials say that a man was hiking in the california forest when he became tired. that's when rescue crews were called in. they used a search light.
