good morning, everyone. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday, november 26th. let's check your holiday forecast. good morning. >> good morning to you! we have a pleasant pattern for the weekend. a cool start this morning, cooler than yesterday. we do have patchy dense fog, more on that coming up we'll be partly cloudy for the afternoon, and our temperatures will be warmer. we'll look by how much, coming up in a few moments. [audio not understandable] the space agency is launching the biggest explorer, you're taking a look at the mars rover about to blast off from cape canaveral. this is a live look. less than a minute from now, when this launch is expected to take place. the rover is a six wheeled explorer nicknamed curiosity, and it will send it into orbit

it. will take curiosity about about 8 months to reach the red planet. this costs about $2.5 billion. it's really a mobile lab holding science instruments needed to collect different samples from martial soil and rocks. and it's not a light instrument here. it weighs one ton, about five times more than the mars rover predecessors, that went to the red planet back in 2004. you talk about all those instruments on it, five instruments, 10 including a rock vaporizing laser. there it goes. there it goes! heading up into the sky this morning, right on time. there it heads into the sky. >> really not since the twin viking landers touched done on the martial surface in 1976 has an an advanced lab gone up.

here you are nasa still moving forward as it looks to go to mars. >> 8 1/2 months it. will not be a short trip for the curiosity. but it is headed out there on time, on schedule right now. 8 1/2 months before it reaches mars. >> nba owners and players say it is time to tip off. early this morning the two sides came to terms on a tentative agreement, and that means the hoop dreams of basketball fans have been answered. allie rasmus is live with the story. >> reporter: some are talking about the possible deal on twitter. charles jenkins says woke up to the best news, opportunity of a lifetime. other players like jeremy linsay he's excited to have a job again. but some players are expressing reservations.

that kind of highlights the issue here. this is just a tentative agreement for now. but after midnight this morning, representatives for players and the team owners shook hands on it, and there were sighs and smiles. players did make some concessions for this tentative agreement. waiting for pay cuts and shorter contracts and smaller raises. once the deal is finalized, a majority of the 30 teams and more than 430 nba players will have to vote on it to make it official. nba commissioner david stern talked about the need to restart the nba season for fans and for businesses. >> we resolved that despite some even bumps this evening, that the greater good required us to knock ourselves out and come to this kind of understanding. >> if a final agreement is reached, the nba season would start with a triple header on

christmas day. no word yet on when the warriors' first game would happen. we've reached out to team officials this morning, trying to get their reaction to this tentative agreement. we haven't heard back from them yet but will stay on this story throughout morning. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. two suspects in an attempted robbery are in custody this morning and police say the victims' family helped chase them down three men broke into a home on viewpoint boulevard at about 9:30 last night. they demanded cash and valuables but ran off after the victim said they had nothing. the homeowner called his son, who lived in the area. the son and other family members ended up chasing down two of the suspects and held them until authorities arrived. one of the suspects is still at large. three west oakland families are out of their homes this morning after an overnight fire started in one house and then spread to another. that fire started around 12:45 this morning at the home on

haven street. then it spread to the home next door. firefighters quickly arrived on scene and managed to extinguish the flames in both homes within about 45 minutes. the three families in the two homes made it off safely and the cause is now under investigation. investigators will survey the scene monday to determine why a water main burst in south san francisco. newschopper 2 captured this footage of water shooting a hundred feet into dozen homes a magnolia and palm avenues were flooded. the rushing water turned into a muddy river. the cause a feeder line that split open, gushing water through a 60" main. clean-up crews brought in heavy machinery to scoop up the mess. residents who were forced to evacuate were eventually allowed back home. the public utilities commission says it will reimburse everyone for damages, even so residents are wondering why it took more than three hours before water was shut off in the pikes. >> i came home and it was just pouring down the hill.

just -- just after the effects of it. but it was just flooding really bad. >> there are no injuries, but damage could run into the millions of dollars. the two water lines had just been installed as part of a seismic upgrade. water officials say they were built to last 100 years. san francisco police have released a photo of a man they believe intentionally drove over another person. investigators say the suspect and the victim got into a fight at a restaurant on the corner every geary and 11th avenue early thursday morning. when the victim walked to a nearby gas station, the suspect allegedly ran him down and drove away. here's a picture of the suspect. police say he was driving a black manslaughter a suv. the victim suffered life- threatening injuries. black friday has passed, and cyber monday is coming up. but today is still small business saturday. shoppers are being asked to visit their local small businesses today and spends money. organizers say small businesses create jobs and help boost the

american economy. and 89 million people plan to visit a small business sometime today. black friday shoppers at san francisco's union square found more than bargains and deep discounts during the busy shopping day. occupy san francisco protestors marched through the area yesterday afternoon and asked people to avoid shopping at corporate retailers. the occupy movement claims retailers are part of a so- called 1%. police officers responded to the scene, resulting in some scuffles and shoving. >> it's strange how they do it here. lots of people from out of town, lot of people with kids that will be worried. but it's a good message. >> little kids carrying a sign on how like enough money to spend in one day can educate every child in the u.s. i believe that. >> protestors also tried to storm both macy's and union square tree lighting ceremonies, but in both cases officers stopped protestors. retailers hope to extend their success on black friday

through the weekend. 152million people are expected to shop at stores through sunday. at bay area malls such as broadway plaza in walnut creek, a number of shopping bag held -- merchants say the crowds have been big. >> we can't tell. offices. that equates to 76 million people. good morning to you! we're looking at a mostly sunny afternoon, temperatures going to be warmer. this morning some of us waking up with patchy dense fog it's a chilly start, 5 degrees cooler around the bay area, 8 degrees in part of north bay. so dense fog this morning. we don't have any advisories, but there is santa rosa, reporting visibility between quarter mile and half mile. so you'll need to take it easy along the roadways. perhaps along the golden gate this morning. and concord also reporting visibility down to about a mile some we'll find it inside the valley. low-lying areas, where temperatures really begin to sink. and that cool air just hits the bottom and begins to saturate. 50 degrees oakland. 50 in san francisco. 46 hayward. looking at 39 in napa. so a cool one out there. getting out early, maybe back out to do some holiday shopping. bundle up, dress in layers because but the afternoon you'll be shutting some of those. satellite storm track pushed

>> this morning two of three students a arrested and released from egypt are on their way home. egyptian police released them this past sunday, accusing them of throwing firebombs at security forces. authority later released them on friday. two rest egypt this morning. sweeney is going to leave later today for his home in missouri. all three were in egypt as part of a semester study abroad program. the return home for the three americans comes amid continuing unrest. protestors in tahrir square continue to demand military government hand over power to a several 81 government. this all comes before monday's parliamentary elections. some egyptians watch the violence are skeptical, whether the elections this take place. >> there's a failure to see that the street is the only determinant of egypt's future,

and that the united states government as most governments should support whoever the egyptian people would like to see. >> protestors voicing support for the military are continuing to demonstrate in cairo. the protestors are using military is egypt's last standing institution. and say its fall will bring anarchy to the streets. there are growing tensions between pakistan and the united states. officials in islambad this morning accuse u.s.-led forces of firing on pakistani army checkpoints in the northwest part of the country. 25 soldiers were reportedly killed in the helicopter attacks and in retaliation pakistan has closed a key border crossing that nato uses to move supplies into afghanistan. the u.s. is offering condolences, while nato is promising an investigation. earlier this week the supercommittee on capitol hill announcend its failure to reach a plan to cut the u.s. deficit. the result could mean massive

spending cuts starting in 2013 and the defense budget is not likely to be spared. one possible cut includes the f35 fighter jet program, now projected it will cost $150 billion more than what the pentagon projected 10 years ago. but one budget analyst says some programs just cannot be cut right away. >> like closing bases, reducing personnel costs, reducing the number of personnel. those are things that take time to implement. >> men and women in the military are also likely to be affected. military health care costs have jumped from 19billion to $50 billion in the last 10 years. analysts say service members will likely see a decrease in benefits. they could also see smaller raises to combat pay. the 2012 race for the white house continues to heat up. and this morning we're learning new details about the strategy that current administration plans on using to win re- election. president obama's team is said to be crafting a campaign

strategy involving vice president joe biden. the plan is to have biden campaign heavily and three battleground states. ohio, pennsylvania, and florida. some political analysts say they believe biden might be more an asset connecting with voters in those states rather than mr. obama. ohio, pennsylvania and florida hold 67 electoral votes. the clock is ticking on the occupy los angeles encampment. mayor villaraigosa news forked yesterday protestors must leave the encampment by monday morning. he praised the movement but says the 485 tents are unsustainable. >> i'm proud of the fact that this has been a peaceful, non- violent protest. it has been peaceful because we decided to do things differently here in los angeles. we've not stared each other down, crossed bare kids and barbed wire. >> we'd like to express the

fine is denying the allegations and remains on paid administrative leave. the fbi has now traced a mysterious deaths of three people to a phony craigslist ad. after receiving a tip, agents found a body yesterday near a shopping mall in akron, ohio. the bureau believers the victim was killed after answering an online ad for a farmhand. two people have been arrested in connection to the case. one of the suspects is a high school student. a speck in the disappearance of natalie holloway will stand trial for murder on another case. jordan van der sloot is command with killing a 21-year-old woman last year in peru. the death happened five years to the day holloway vanner in aruba. the trial is january 6th, he's also accused of trying to extort money from holloway's father. destroyed by drought, what is happening to christmas trees in texas putting a damper on what some consider a holiday tradition.

a southern california community is rallying around a palm tree. the tree was isolated when dirt fell away last weekend in san pedro. some people want the city to save the tree as they see it as a symbol of hope. more land is expected to fall into the ocean. the texas drought is wiping out a large number of the state's christmas trees this year. one farm says it had to cut out 1500 to 2,000 trees in september because of decay. the state has shipped in trees from across the country to bring vent a christmas tree shortage and some people say they are losing a family tradition when they can't go out and chop down that tree. >> we were a little disappointed. it's fun to get the perfect tree and chopping it down.

>> texas triolets are now charging $30 more for out-of- state trees. the white house is getting into the christmas spirit this weekend. the horse-drawn wagon delivered that tree yesterday to the white house. first lady michelle obama and her daughters and bo the going on hand for that delivery. the evergreen comes from wisconsin. and that tree is going to be displayed in the blue room of the white house. [cheering] look at that! that is here in the bay area. the tree lighting ceremony that took place last night at san jose plaza. it was part of the 32nd annual christmas in the park festival. the tree is environmentally friendly as well. leds and other lights in place this year. santa will be there this weekend. children can visit free between 3:30 and 9 p.m.

cheffa is the fairmont hotel have put the finishing touches on the largest gingerbread house. it's a 22-foot high masterpiece and opens today. it 5500 pieces of gingerbread to build that house. and it's topped with 850 pounds of royal icing, 425 pounds of candy, and 8 gallons of chocolate. berkeley clairemont hotel club and spa has their own winter wonderland planned. they're holding a village lighting ceremony tomorrow and there will be carolers, food and drinks and a 10-foot tall replica of the clairemont. that starts at 11 a.m. tomorrow. and there are plenty of other events around the bay area. all you have to did is go to ktvu.com, and click on the holiday weekend tab, which is at the top of the page. lighting trees part of a classic tradition, fun to be part of. >> we're looking good, dealing with patchy dense fog out there for the weekend.

nba players and owners reach a tentative deal. good morning, everyone. welcome back to mornings on 2. nba basketball is back. after a marathon bargaining session into the wee hours of the morning, the players and the owners have reached a tentative agreement. allie rasmus is live at warriors headquarters now in oakland, and you just talked to a spokesperson. what did he say about the situation? >> reporter: well, as you mentioned it's that tentative agreement turns into a final deal, then the nba season would start on christmas day. no word yet on when the warriors would have their first game. but training camp would start on december 9th so presumably by then the warriors training facility would be back up and running. 10 minutes ago, i did talk to the spokesman for the warriors. he says because of a gag order issued during the lockout, he

can't comment on the tentative agreement until the nba gives the team permission to do to because a team made a few comments and was fined $500,000. so for now, the team spokesman says they are just in a wait and see mode. this is just a tentative agreement for now. but after midnight this morning, representatives from the players and team owners shook hands on it. there were smiles of relief in the room in new york, just after midnight our time. players did make some concessions, agreeing for now to pay cuts amount to go 300 million a year, and shorter contracts and smaller raises. a majority of the 30 teams and more than 430 nba players will have to vote on it to make it official. nba commissioner david stern talked about the need to restarted the season for fans and businesses. >> the thousands of people who are dependent upon playing of our game at arenas, parking

at 7:41, let's check your traffic. 280 in san jose looking good this morning, but there's a problem on the lawrence expressway. the chp says a car knocked down a pole and is now blocking the roadway. that is near oak mead so watch out for. that an onramp to interstate 580 in richmond could close for five years and that is angering city leaders and residents. times reports caltrans is planning a deck prepare project east of the bridge and that repair project would force the 580 onramp to close through the summer of 2014 that. could force drivers in western richmond to try to go east on 580 to first cross the bridge before driving back on eastbound 580. caltrans isn't commenting on the story. it's the most popular movie in theaters now. but why some some say latest "twilight" flick could be bad for your health. one more gift...

scene and managed to extinguish the flames within 45 minutes. the three families in the two homes made it out safely and the cause is now under investigation. in rodeo, two suspects in an attempted home-invasion robbery are in custody this morning and the victim's family helped chase them down. investigators say three men broke into a home on viewpoint boulevard around 9:30 last night. they demanded cash and valuables but ran off after the victims said they did not have anything. authorities say after they left, a homeowner called his son who lives down the street, and the son and other family members ended up chasing after the two suspects and held them until police arrived. the suspect is still at large. overnight, it was that nba owners and players have a handshake deal in place to end the 149-day lockout. ktvu's allie rasmus is live at warrior headquarters in oakland with when the games are expected to begin. >> reporter: i walked to the

warriors' team spokes man and he explained that because there's a gag order during lockout he can't comment on the tentative agreement yet. but some of the warriors players have been talking about this possible end to the nba lockout on twitter. some players seem a little more skeptical. this is just a tentative agreement for now. representatives for the players and team owners shook hands on it, there were sighs and smiles of relief in the room. players did make some concessions, agree to go pay shorter contracts and smaller raises. once the deal is finalized, a majority of the 30 teams and more than 430 nba players would have to vote on to make it

year-old tony phillips in connection to that shooting. police are still looking for two other suspects. and the search continues for the woman who squirted pepper spray at fellow shoppers in los angeles. video inside the store shows a mad scramble for a game system, about two dozen people suffered skin and eye irritation. the woman could face felony charges of assault. investigators have been watching the store surveillance video trying to identify her. and another incident of black friday sri lens happened a a wal-mart outside phoenix. police knocked at grandfather unconscious. officers accuse him of shoplifting a video game and resisting arrest. but his family says he put the game under his shirt when unruly customers tried to snatch it away from him. witnesses also claimed he did not resist arrest. the investigation continues this morning into a federal of officer involved shoot. authorities released the identity of the man killed and the officer who shot him. police a a woman called police

on police reporting her ex- boyfriend was banging on the door and trying to get inside her apartment. when officer dennis arrived, 25- year-old pablo ramirez refused to cooperate and then pulled out a handgun. the officer fired three times at perez, killing him. police are investigating that shooting. solano county businesses are stepping up to help after the shooting death of police officer jim capoot. this business is selling special mocha cream chocolate cupcakes in honor of the fallen officer. proceeds will go to capoot's family. hundreds of cupcakes have already been sold. the bakery owner says it's a small way to remember the officer. >> doesn't feel like it's enough, to be honest, because it's just a cupcake. but hopefully people come and it can grow a lot more. >> other businesses are also helping out, like this mexican restaurant which plans to donate proceeds made during the

upcoming monday night football game. a local froze on yogurt shop plans to hold its own event. his memorial service is scheduled for wednesday morning. the parents of a man shot and killed by a oakland schools police officer have filed a lawsuit against the school district. 20-year-old rahim brown was shot at a dance in january police say he tried to stab an officer with a screwdriver. the parents don't believe that but also say if brown did do it, he didn't deserve to be shot. the mothers of -- has foiled a separate lawsuit. the city of richmond will pay a $1.5 million settlement to the family of a mentally ill man who died in police custody. he died in 2008 after police used a taser gun on him. police say he posed an immediate threat during arrest. his family says he was never investigated and the family plans to use the settlement money to advocate for better treatment of the mentally ill. a danville marine killed in afghanistan will be honored at a public memorial tonight.

lance corporal josh coral was killed last week during combat operations. tonight's memorial is at the football stadium at 7:30. his body is scheduled to arrive at travis air force base on monday. in san jose, blue star moms will be apt christmas in the park festival to help decorate a christmas tree. a blue star moms will decorate the tree with pictures of men and women serving in the military. the owner of a berkeley apartment building gutted last week by fire is going to begin tearing down the building on monday. the fire destroyed the building. there's concern the building might collapse. so the street is going to remain shut down until that demolition work is finished, which is scheduled to take about a week. 39 apartments were destroyed along with a well-known restaurant and a longtime sports bar.

just five blocks away a super murder debt is closing. the owners say they're closing the store on telegraph and derby. an exact date has not been determined. they closed in october as well as stores in danville, walnut creek, emeryville and palo alto. they were bought by the investment group capital. this morning it's still unclear what will happen to that young orca that washed ashore at point reyes national see shore. it was first spotted thursday about 10 miles northwest near mcclure social security beach. orca sight relationships rare here. yesterday scientists made the dangerous trek over rocks to the isolated beach. some hikeers also managed to get a view of the animal. >> it's kind of mixed emotions. it's exciting to be able to see one, but it's sad to see a creature that big that hasn't survived. >> a team from the california

good morning to you! mostly sunny skies this morning. 50 degrees during the holidays. about the initiative that with shut down california's two nuclear power plants could result in rolling blackouts, higher electricity rates, and billions in economic losses. those are the findings from a new report from california's non-partisan legislative analysts office. the l.a. o. says shutting down the plant in san diego and san luis obispo county would negatively impact the economy. it could make california's budget even worse. there's a potential ballot measure in california to legalize marijuana for some people. the secretary of state cleared a proposal to legalize marijuana for anyone 18, 19 excuse me, or older. they need about a half million signatures to be placed on the ballot.

voters approved the measure, it would create a california cannabis commission to regulate growing sales and smoking in public. it would exempt pot for personal. analysts say it'si its impact is uncertain because marijuana use is still illegal under federal law. efforts to investigate a thanksgiving eve plane crash in arizona have been hindered. this time by bad weather. federal investigators arrived at the scene yesterday to try to determine what caused the crash. three adults and three children were killed from that plane slammed into the side of the mountain and burst into flames on wednesday night. officials say the nature of a crash and the rough terrain could make this investigation very difficult. >> with the high-impact velocity and the fire that ensued, the wreckage is barely fragmented. it's -- some of the clues, information we need won't be available. but that's the basic plan is to assess the wreckage and understand as west we can the

developing news out of los angeles. a woman who allegedly squirted pepper spray at federal customers in a wal-mart on black friday has surrendered to police. authorities have not released her identity yet. they plan to release more information later this morning. police sergeant says the woman is not currently in custody but could face battery charges. she is accused of firing the
