different this year to kickoff the holiday shopping season. they avoided the big box stores and national chains and went to their hometown merchants. we have more from john about how small business saturday worked out. john? >> reporter: it is winding down in store, but for bars and restaurants, the night is still young, a campaign aimed at helping small businesses on local levels. this is a hot spot for japanese cuisine and also a small business. >> we put a lot of love into the product we produce. huge corporations have a textbook atmosphere. >> managers at double mountain cyclery build personal relationship with their customers. >> a lot of our customers are neighbors. we want to keep our service at a high level. >> reporter: now that the holidays are here, president obama is touting small business

saying they are the backbone of the community and the cornerstone of the nation's promise. this is the president of the northern california inspect book seller's -- independent book seller's association. >> the tax dollars created by purchases in small businesses come back to the communities. >> reporter: danville chocolates is another spot celebrating small business saturday. >> i think what we do is special. we work with our customers and personalize chocolate. >> reporter: people shopping today were thrilled to be helping out. >> i think it is important, otherwise we won't have this -- wouldn't have this small little downtown community feeling. >> reporter: customers say an advantage to shopping in small businesses is usually you don't have to face the big, aggressive crowd that is can overrun the bigger stores. >> and it looks like the early start to black friday was a big success to retailers.

one retailer analyst said sales increased 6.6%, saying people spent a record $11.4 billion in retailer stores and malls, up almost a billion dollars from last year. economists credit pent up bans from the recession on the shopping surge. they credit opening early and major discounts at that time stores enticed consumers. and a woman pepper sprayed l.a. shoppers at a wal-mart, surrendered to authorities, but then refused to talk about the incident. 20 people were hurt in the melee on thanksgiving night. the woman allegedly sprayed shoppers waiting for a shipment of xbox video game to be unloaded. the unidentified woman was released after invoking her rights against self incrimination. and two more suspects and a

weapon in a robbery and shooting has police looking for two more men. this man, 20-year-old tony philips, was one of three men who approached a group of shoppers around 2:00 friday morning. one of the shopper, 21-year- old christopher marillo was shot during a struggle for the merchandise. his cousin grabbed hillarys until the police -- philips until the police arrived and arrested him. and we have a report live from the city with protestors getting everyone involved. >> reporter: only a few people are gathered an left from the march that ended earlier at 24th and mission. it read full rights for all immigrants. the chants had been we are the 99%. that was today's emphasis. hundreds began the mark around 3:30 this afternoon. occupied san francisco supporters continued on to 16th

and mission then rallied there with speakers. the march then move add few block to 24th and mission where the supporters plan to rally again. they push for equal rights for all, including immigrants, especially immigrants. it read domestic workers are the 99%. organizers described families torn apart by current immigration laws and banks taking advantage of those in the community. immigrants, just like other oppressed communities have had enough, suffering from lack of housing, lack of dignified jobs and health care being terrorized by immigration and the police. enough is enough. we are part of this movement. >> reporter: there was a heavy san francisco police presence today. officers walked in a single file line next to marchers. the protestors remained peaceful while occupy protestors were encouraged to protestors in camp, any action which backs the movement. some mentioned another future

protestors to shot down the port of oakland once again. reporting live. and someone in seattle apparently had "occupy oakland" on their mind during a major act of vandalism. someone smashed almost all of the windows and atm screen at this u.s. bank bran in which the seattle university district. police say vandalism happened on northeast 63rd street before 3:00 this morning. graffiti sprayed on the building say revenge for "occupy oakland." police say no one tried to get into the bank itself. and occupy berkeley supporters showed up to knit hand-made items for occupy protestors facing chilly temperatures in the coming weeks and months. >> it is an act of solidarity. we are really happy to know they are there and we are here at the same time, and we just

want to send them a little bit of holiday cheer. >> organizers say they are hoping to send off their handmade crafts by december 12th. two 13-year-old boys are in custody following a home invasion robbery. a homeowner in rodeo called around 9:20 last night to report armed robbers had broken into their home on viewpoint boulevard. investigators say the robbers ran off whether the victims said they didn't have any valuables. relative who is lived nearby chased the suspects and deputies arrested the 13-year- olds about a mile away. they are now being held at juvenile hall at suspicion of burglary, robbery and resisting arrest. and a fatal shooting is being investigated in north richmond. marquis hamilton was shot outside a convenience store at 5th and market avenue around

5:00 p.m. deputies say he was deliberately targeted. no arrests have been made. and a case of groned theft is being investigated from a bingo game. officers received a call about 10:30 last night at a bingo hall on martin avenue. a woman won a $1,000 jackpot when a man grabbed some of her winnings and ran out of the building. police say the waiting vehicle was a dark colored honda and then he fled. police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in a conquered motel room. the victim was 46 years old and found in a room at the premier inn on concord avenue at noon yesterday. her identity, as well as the cause of death are unknown. and an inmate is back in jail after he escapes during a trip to the hospital. 23-year-old joshua plum of texas was examined at john deere medical center at walnut creek last night for possible

injury. authorities say he escaped when deputies tried to put him back in a patrol car. he is in a higher security cell now while he waits extradition to sex. and a pedestrian was struck and killed by a train in palo alto this morning. a man was hit at the california avenue cal train station just before 11:00 a.m. . the train was not scheduled to stop there. cal train's service was suspended for about an hour, causing delays on the system. 320 passenger were transferred to another northbound train. and the story of a young man struck and killed last week received financial help today. volunteers spent this saturday scrubbing vehicles for help. >> reporter: today in a quiet union city parking lot, inbetween sprays and washes, the memory of a young man was on the find of many. >> a tragic young life taken.

unfortunate. you know. so, i wanted to come out and support them. >> reporter: he was a senior in high school in union city and a busker and food runner at texas roadhouse. >> he wasn't a shy guy. he was one of those guys who was willing enough to meet people. >> reporter: i investigato rs say he was walking to work this week around 11:30 in the morning on sunday. he had headphones on, as he always did, listening to music. what was different, this time though, was a union pacific freight train was coming right behind him. >> he was a good employee, hard worker, always smiling. >> reporter: that is why the family and restaurant organized this memorial car wash to raise money for next week's funeral of their dear friend. strangers pulled in, opening up their hearts and wallets. >> we should be supporting them. it is the season, especially right now, to be helping out other people. >> everyone in our family was really close. it is very helpful for our loss

worked out. a majority of the 30 nba teams and a majority of the more than 430 players need to approve the deal for it to become official and allow team to begin playing on christmas. a public memorial is set to get under way in just over an hour for a young bay area marine killed in afghanistan. 19-year-old lance corporal josh corral of danville was killed last week during con bat operations. tonight's memorial is scheduled for 7:30 at the san ramon high school valley football field. he joined the marines shortly after graduating last year. we will bring you a report from the memorial service tonight on the 10:00 news. one of the three american students arrested in cairo is back home tonight. 19-year-old gregory corridor arrived in philadelphia this afternoon. the other two young men are expected back in their hometowns in indiana and missouri later tonight.

can hold life. it will take 8.5 months to get there. it is more than 354 million- miles away. time to talk about our weather. nice to see the sun out there today. let's see if things are warming up? >> temperatures, well, more 60s across parts of the bay area. a few spots of localized fog kept things on the cooler side. the macks you can see on live storm tracker two. a few high clouds are move from the north and west, remaining in place over the next few days. i can tell you we have a rain- free forecast developing, in fact. the main storm track heading way to the north. this was the scene today. some high clouds i showed you drifting in across a good portion of the bay area, with partly cloudy skies and patchy fog from earlier this morning. speaking of the fog, will it be regrouping overnight tonight. a dense fog advisory begins tonight at 10:00. lasted until 10:00 sunday morning.

this in place for the north and east bay valleys and san francisco bay for the boaters. visibility coming down to less than a quarter mile. that was the case this morning for the inland valleys. we could have a repeat performance tomorrow morning. it painted quite a bit of fog toward fairfield and antioch. temperatures in the 30s. san francisco downtown in the upper 40s. shoughs starting sunday at 43- degrees. high pressure strengthing and as a result, a lot of leftover moisture coming through from the area storms. temperatures tomorrow will be up a good 4 to 8 degrees. a dry weather pattern for a good portion of the week, with temperatures in the 60s to even around 70 degrees. here is the updated forecast model. it is showing you fog in the

members of a bay area blue star mom's group got together to spread a little holiday cheer. they decorated trees with pictures of their loved ones serving overseas. those involved with the blue star moms say it is important to have events like this and have the support of each other. >> it is hard to send your child off too a war zone. we know what it is like. this group knows what it is like. just meeting these other mothers is the most amazing thing. >> the decorated tree will be stay in the plaza in downtown san jose through the holiday. >> nice to see that there. also nice to see stanford pulling off a win today. yes. a big profile game, tries for
