family says he is hanging on. he was shot in the head as surveillance video recorded at least three men opening fire on a crowd of people monday night. seven people were hurt. >> everybody hopes that people will step up. and call out, you know, the suspects in this. because you know it is the innocent person's life. >> reporter: long-time oakland resident anthony mcneal organized what he called community healing and also spoke to lawrence's father at the hospital. >> what was amazing at the hospital, there was no meanness in his heart. there was only the concern of the safety and recovery of his son. and that he promised, you know to change his life. >> reporter: yet, revenge for the shooting is still the concern of the police and the mayor, and the mayor says she will walk in the coming days. >> people need to come forward, let us know who the shooters are, and so that we can stop the violence in the

officer jim capoot. a sea of police filled the stadium at vallejo high school as family and friends said good- bye to 45-year-old officer jim capoot. >> as we celebrate jim, i want you to think of the things that he taught you. things he shared with you, things he did for you. try not to dwell on the difficulty of this day. >> reporter: jim capoot left behind a wife and three daughters, each of them who paid tribute to the man who they called their best friend. >> dad told me always to charge on, stand on my own two feet, because my last name is jim capoot. >> i don't think i will ever truly believe that dad is gone, but i know i can live the life he wanted me to have. and everything he has taught me has been stepping stones to being able to overcome this horrible loss we have all seen. >> reporter: this former marine was also known for his love of coaching girl's basketball at vallejo high. one girl spoke of the incident

november 17th. >> as i stepped out of the car i felt sadness as i turned my back and walked away, not knowing -- that it would be my last moments with him. but i know in my heart he will always be there. >> reporter: the service ended with a fly-over by helicopters, and the missing may be formation. and a presentation of american flags for the family of police and the marine corp. in vallejo, . and the people in vallejo made their feelings known today. the procession carried the casket, and citizens and law enforcement and firefighters paid tribute to the fallen officers. people held up signs honoring his service and sacrifice. the crews saluted in silence, what is known as an officer's last journey. and officer jim capoot was not

the only officer honored today. coming up, how one community is remembering one of its own. and a high wind warning in having effect for the bay area, i want to show you just how windy it is outside. it is always crowded with the usual rush hour traffic. now let's switch over to a live shot of the san mateo bridge. bay area hills could see gusts of up to 60 miles per hour tonight. people all over the bay area are bracing for more as the wind storm gets intense throughout the night. live team coverage has chief meteorologist bill martin tracking the conditions. let's start with the health and science editor. the winds there are gusting over 30 miles per hour. >> reporter: we're at 1400 feet on a ridge above the tunnel. and just moments ago, the peak gusts of the day, 43 miles per hour. that is unofficial. the -- the potentially dangerous wind event is not over yet. and so far we have seen to have

dodged major problems. around the bay, many people appreciated the swirling autumn colors. >> fall finally hit, you feel the wind blowing, nice to see the wind moving. >> it is horrible for my hair, too windy. >> reporter: in walnut creek, a few limbs blown down. >> i love the wind. do better without it but -- you take what you get. >> reporter: the wind blew away bay area fog. it was a spectacular day up in the air. but landing could be challenging. at the field, some pilots struggled with 30 miles per hour gusts. >> it was quite windy, moving across the runway. >> reporter: a few pilots cancelled the trip. owners checked the tie downs. >> the wind came up, as you can see all the planes are chained downment down.

i think we'll be fine. >> reporter: and up on the mountain, peak gusts hitting 71 miles per hour before noon, this wind is dry. bill will have more in a moment to explain why. and that means that grasses are drying, fire danger increasing. i'll tell you in the last two or three minutes the wind does seem to pick up here. reporting live, john fowler, ktvu news. and let's talk to our chief meteorologist bill martin, and bill give us the significance of this wind event and what to expect. >> you know it is a significant wind event, here is why, it lasts 12 hours longer than normal. normally we get the strong winds overnight, they die down in the morning. they will start up overnight and keep going all night into tomorrow, a high wind warning for higher elevations, above thousand feet. wind gusts at 60 miles per hour in the east bay hill. john is in the east bail hills, but the winds are not clocking out of the east yet. that will happen in the north,

on thanksgiving, and that escobar ran him down later. last week he was spotted in north beach. >> another police officer who works patrol saw the surveillance video out in the media and so forth. and he recognized it. he actually saw him earlier that night. >> he faces charges of attempted murder and assault charges as well. they are still searching for him, in a black mazda with front end damage possibly. and district attorney says jury found 35-year-old umar hudson guilty of sexual assault and murder. he stabbed jernell scott outside her home. she was the mother of his daughter. hudson was also accused of sexually assaulting scott's daughters who were nine and 13 years old. now he is facing 80 years to

life in prison when he is sentenced on january 3. and wells fargo donating 4000 to a charity in eastern contra costa county after thieves stole the bulk of their donations yesterday. we first brought you the story on the 10:00 news, friends say they collected toys, food and clothing for needy families and that somebody took all of them from a storage room at the elementary school. and los angeles city leaders praising police today for a peaceful raid on the los angeles occupy camp. the whole world is watching. the protesters tried to stand firm during the overnight action, they were cleared out at the city hall. almost 300 protesters were arrested. nobody was hurt. >> the world was watching last night. what the world saw was a good operational plan that was

>> reporter: these people have sadly led processions for many people. but for lance corporal josh corral, they never saw anything like it. the out-pouring of support, thousands attending his service. >> life was -- >> reporter: just 19, josh corral called chachi by family and friends died in combat in afghanistan. >> when he became a marine, he told us he was going -- he wanted to serve. he talked about making a difference. >> reporter: his family says they have seen how their son has made a difference, touching and inspiring countless lives, as evident by the out-pouring of support in danville for a marine returning home one last time. >> i think it is just danville, they have been a huge supporter for us, for the troops.

>> reporter: it is a quiet day, but a day of celebration here at the reception. there is a mariachi band playing, something they say his friends would have liked. in the south bay today, a soldier comes home. ktvu speaks with the mother of the fallen soldier, shaun walsh, as his body comes home to the bay area. and sad news tonight about a first round pick of the oakland raiders. chester mclaughlin died tonight, he was only 42, he passed away they believe after suffering a heart attack. he was the raiders' first round pick in 1992, selected to play in the pro bowl four times -- in the nfl. he was in his second season as a defensive coach at stanford. mclaughlin is survived by his wife and two children. and environmental activists and out door business owners

gathered in golden gate park today to urge governor brown to restore funding to state parks. the parks are slated to close in july as part of 11 million in budget cuts, they claim that the cuts are short sighted. saying that the parks actually generate more than four billion in business every year. >> over 85 million people come to visit california state parks, every year. to go picnicking, hiking, biking, enjoying our natural beauty. >> reporter: today's rally was part of the state wide push by environment california to convince the legislature to restore complete funding to the park system. an exclusive poll showing president obama is losing ground here in california. the poll shows fewer california voters want the president back in the white house for a second term. 45% said they are inclined to reelect the president, that is down four points from march, 44% said they are not inclined to vote for him.

however, voters still prefer president obama over the top republican rivals. he leads mitt romney 50% to 40% and leads gingrich 55-35%. and looking at funding to move ahead with the project to install solar panels on thousands of military houses in the country, they suffered a setback when the application for a federal loan guarantee was rejected in the wake of a solyndra guarantee. but the company is getting a loan from the bank, and will go forward with the five-year project to install the solar panels on the military houses. and a fishing vessel fined on fishermen's wharf, two gallons spilled, they didn't believe the spill posed a danger to the environment. coming up at 5:55, the crab boats are back, and the harvest of the season.

and heavy fog keeping people grounded today at the international airport. at least 13 leaving flights cancelled this morning, because the planes never arrived the night before. fog came in last night, keeping some flights from landing in san jose. southwest airlines hit the hardest, airport operations were back to normal by the morning. as breezy as it is, it will get more intense, right? and the strongest winds, in the fairfield area, the winds are coming out of the north. but as we go into the evening hours, the blue -- representing a north wind, i'll show you what is happening in the east bay hills, the winds are stronger right, 26, san francisco, let's call that north, what happens is the winds will clock around, coming this way. more northeasterly, and that is when the funneling in the ridges occur in the east bay hills. and that is when we'll see the peak winds, at 11:00 tonight, i

would say and 9:00 tomorrow morning, we'll see the stronger winds in the east bay hills and around the bay area. that is where the wind advisory is in effect for areas above a thousand feet. the rest of us have wind warnings above a thousand, wind advisory for the rest of us. the fog impacted the airport, but when you get a strong wind like this they have to change the runways, landing in the wind, they like the take off into the wind, landing coming into the wind. you'll see the changes, flight delays possible, not because of flight but because of wind. as we look at tomorrow, the wind forecast, 70 miles per hour winds above 35 feet. above hamilton, near the area not quite that high. 60 miles per hour wind gusts at about 2000 feet. that is oakland hills, just below 2000 feet. and in the valleys, wind gusts at 40 miles per hour. that is how it breaks down. the significance of this event, the winds go -- tonight,

percent in 2005. the most common was credit card theft, accounting for more than 60% of all id thefts. and the british government wasting no time with iran, following the attack on its people. they evacuated all their staff from the country. britain has ordered all iranian diplomatic entities to leave immediately. last week they cut all financial ties to iran over their suspected nuclear weapons program. and for the first time, a u.s. secretary of state is in myanmar, also known as burma, for two days. she will work to improve the ties with the u.s. secretary clinton is set to meet with the military leaders and pro- democracy leaders. and former illinois governor rod blagojevich is

scheduled to be sentenced next tuesday. and today, the federal prosecutors gave the recommendations. they say that rod blagojevich deserves 15-20 years in prison for his multiple corruption convictions. the charges include trying to sell or trade the senate seat that came open when president obama was elected. an associate of rod blagojevich who was not an elected official has already been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison. the man who shot and wounded president reagan in 1981 wants longer releases from the mental hospital where he lived for the last 30 years, after a jury found him insane after the shooting. an attorney argued he is no longer a threat to anybody. and hinckley is asking to extend the visits to see mom's home in virginia, they are currently 10 days long. and he would later like to live full-time outside the mental

hospital. and preacher billy graham in a hospital in north carolina, he was shown near in 2007, being honored by the former president at the dedication of the billy graham library. he is 93 years old, in stable condition tonight. he was admitted for tests to see if he has pneumonia. no word on when he will be released. and another countdown for occupy sf protesters as they consider a big move. he was just weeks away from returning home to his family in san jose, but today the body of that soldier returned from afghanistan. you'll hear his story

occupy protesters are asking for items. tomorrow's deadline is time for them to leave the camp. for weeks now the mayor and police have been cagey about any plans to clear that camp. david stevenson live in the city now where protesters have just hours to get out. >> reporter: well, gasia mikaelian, tonight there is a new deadline for occupy san francisco as some of the protesters here consider a big move across town. >> i will tell you today that time is short. and that -- we do not want -- anybody on the property as of noon tomorrow. >> reporter: san francisco's department public works director told the staffers that the tents must come down to restore justin herman plaza. after the meeting last night they did not accept the offer of the abandoned mission district school as a protest site. >> right now the general idea is we have not rejected or accepted any offer as of yet.

>> reporter: still, the protesters met today about the school campus in discussing possible provisions for service dogs and children. >> we do clarify that children will be allowed to visit the tent classes but not spend the night or live in the camp area. >> it is a very high crime, high drug use area they were trying to give up. >> reporter: one spokesperson said that the movement must stay near justin herman plaza near the city's financial district to remain relevant. crime near the plaza are on the rise, the mission district residents are split on whether they would welcome occupy sf. >> it can be pretty crazy. it will just probably be a lot crazier. >> i don't think it would contribute to any -- no violence or anything. you know? all they need is a stable place to lay their heads. >> reporter: the city officials continue to say the camp is not sustainable. but for now, there is no official day for it to close. the goal tomorrow is to get crews in to care for some of

the palm trees and grass along the plaza. reporting live, san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu. and the students building the area reopened today after the occupiers vacated the building yesterday. the hahn building was closed after the protesters took it over. they ended their occupation because it was an inconvenience to other students. protest organizers said they were demonstrating in solidarity with other protests at uc berkeley and davis. and a gang member facing 10 years to life for his role in the murder of a college student. a jury convicted velazquez of conspiracy to commit murder and assault. prosecutors say that two other members of the ms 13 gang opened fire outside the bart station two years ago. 21-year-old frias died, two others wounded. and police say that a teen

stabbed a jogger last night in a failed robbery attempt in oakley. investigators say the attempt happened at 6:45 at the shoreline, as the 58-year-old victim had just finished running. he told police that a boy between 14 and 16 years old wearing a great hoody demanded money, then stabbed him in the arm. the man says the boy ran away, they took the man to the hospital where the doctors treated him for the stab wound and blood loss. a very difficult day for a mother in san jose today. this afternoon, the body of her son who was killed in afghanistan was flown in. and ktvu has more on how the young man had big plans for his life when he returned from his tour overseas. >> reporter: frank, moffett field is flying at half staff to honor the marine, his body returned in a casket instead.

always quiet on the tarmac today at moffett field, as the plane carrying shaun walsh came in. walsh was shot and killed by enemy fire in afghanistan. his mother brought his dog, lena to greet his body. >> lena would have been there when he came home anyway. and i just feel it is important to me that she was there. >> reporter: sheryl walsh says her son wanted to become a k-9 police officer and enlisted in the military to help. just hours after his death, his friends posted this tribute on youtube. his mother says the video shows the type of person he was, a happy soul who loved to make people laugh. she was very touched by this picture taken earlier this month. >> my son was always saying i love you, always, and the fact that he put it up there i -- it just makes me -- so proud.

because he wasn't afraid to show people he loved them. >> reporter: those who loved them watched as the casket was lowered off the jet, others were on hand to pay respects. walsh was set to become an adviser to teens upon his return. >> this is a chunky faced little kid, and to watch him turn into a young man, a great future ahead of him. i mean that is the part of it that is painful. knowing that we've lost them. >> reporter: a group of freedom riders followed walsh's body as it exited moffett field. his funeral is set for this saturday at oak hill cemetery in san jose. the public is invited to attend. reporting live from mountain view. ktvu channel 2 action news. and republican presidential candidate herman cain today dismissed speculation that he may give up the race for the white house. >> they want you to believe that with enough character assassination on me -- that --

i will -- drop out. >> no. >> they -- >> reporter: cain spoke to supporters at a dayton, ohio, campaign rally today. earlier today he denied claims he had a 13-year affair. he took aim at obama today. and president obama urging congress to extend the payroll tax cut which he says saves middle class families up to a thousand a year. the president made his case today while making a campaign style stop in pennsylvania. the tax break is set to expire at the end of the year. democrats want to take a vote this week, they also say they want to cover the cost of the tax break with a sur tax on millionaires. republicans are debt set against that idea. we told you earlier in the news cast, how the good news on the jobs front and europe has things soaring today. how is it playing on main street? more on the story.

perspective, the market is 800 points lower, than the high reached just seven months ago. but 55 points higher than the recession low of a few years ago. reporting live, consumer editor, ktvu channel 2 action news. we have developing news right now. back now to that little boy who was shot in the head earlier this week in oakland. just moments ago his father spoke outside children's hospital in oakland, and channel 2 action news' has more. >> reporter: he appears to be responding to his parents, that is encouraging news. they came out of children's hospital just an hour ago to talk with us. they stood outside, take a look at the video we shot at that time. there are about a dozen family members who gathered around the family just trying to show their support. they also had a poster they made up with messages for the little one-year-old boy. the father says that the boy was shot in his arms, and he

told us just this past hour that his son was conscious when he was brought to children's hospital. now the family -- has made up some tee shirts, they say they have been here nonstop, just trying to stay with the boy and be strong for him. and tonight the parents have asked the community to help the police to try to find whoever shot this child, and also to pray for the boy's recovery. here is what the parents had to say. >> pray for my baby, that is all, just keep praying for my baby, that is all i got. all i got. >> they didn't get a man or a teen. they got a toddler. a one-year-old. he has not even been here long enough. he doesn't even know what is going on. he shouldn't have to go through this. >> reporter: and as police investigate again, the parents are just pleading with the community to step forward if they have any information. this little boy is here, today, he is struggling, trying to recover from this gunshot wound. and they say that his birthday

. all right, take a look at these photos of what authorities say was a drug tunnel near san diego, for smuggling drugs. the enforcement officialings officials took the pictures, agents say the tunnel was six miles long with electric rail cars. they took 32 tons of marijuana that had been brought through the tunnel or was waiting to be taken. and a small but often used off ramp nexted to the golden gate bridge was closed. it is also used to reach lincoln boulevard and merchant road. today's closure from 10:00 until 5:00 in the morning is part of the bigger project to widen and replace the drive.

the new doyle drive is expected to be completed in 2015. and police say a kentucky father tried to load groceries and his three children in the car forget one thing, his six month-old baby. he left the baby in a shopping cart near lexington and drove off, later, the couple called police. the man realized the mistake, the officers wouldn't file charges but have turned the case over to social services. and great white sharks are common off the coast, but east coast fishermen had a close encounter in a small boat. the fishermen were off the north carolina coast on thanksgiving when this 18-foot long great white began to circle them. at one point the shark pushed the boat, luckily nobody fell into the water, and the great white later on swam off. taking a look at the high

quickly rising college costs, the sub committee heard from representatives and groups dedicated to cutting costs, the representative said the federal government did what it could do, and wanted to know what the educational institutions are doing to help the students. and 30 years since the state tobacco settlement, a new report showing that the issue has gone down. the organization tobacco-free kids says that funding in fact is down 36% over the last four years. and nevada and california joining forces to try to bring the 2022 winter olympics to lake tahoe. the last time they hosted the olympics was back in '60. the government said they have a memorandum of understanding with california to make a joint bid. and today, we talked about the wind. >> the fog is gone with the strong winds, wind advisory for all of us.

wind warnings for areas above a thousand feet. here is what happened with the winds, gusts on top of mt. diablo, we have gusts up to 71 miles per hour, at 11:00, later in the day, temperatures, winds up to 58 miles per hour. so mount diablo indicating strong winds, increasing winds overnight, changing directions, northeasterly, that will focus the strongest winds most likely in the east bay hills, dry, warm tomorrow, again, the wind event goes from now through tonight when it will be at the strongest, at 2 or 3:00 in the morning. and then later it will decrease, tomorrow, a windy day as well. high pressure, low pressure, that does the wind, as the low pressure and high pressure come in contact, the winds increase. that is where we are now. they're actually getting close enough together, the winds are gradually increasing. so you will know it is the strongest winds after the east bay tonight. winds easily tonight, 65 miles per hour, some of the higher elevations.
