sniff. the wind of change blew in and unless you are in mendocino county we are in the 30s. i know the days are short and we will have upper 60s and 70s and wind advisories take us until 6:00 tonight. westbound is moving along nicely, no major problems getting out to the mcarthur maze. also the morning commute looks good and we are getting more people showing up at the toll plaza. 601, let's go back to the desk. starting with breaking news, right now fire crews are at the scene of an apartment house fire in the mission district and we just found out there were some critical injuries. tara moriarty is there with the details, tara? we just learned there were four victims in this fire, two of them critically injured with severe burns. >> reporter: one of the

firefighters was rescuing a woman coming out and was having a difficult time breathing so he gave her his mask in order that she could breathe. now looking at 24th andville lense why, it is located on bartlett and 24th. the fire broke out this morning and residents said they heard glass popping and shattering as they tried to make it out. we just spoke with the police chief and here is what she had to say about the fire and where it first started. >> it started at the rear of the floor, pretty heavy smoke conditions emanating from the roof and the windy conditions made it a challenging fire to fight. >> reporter: now on the bottom floor, we spoke to some people a little while ago and they are now at the sandwich shop trying to keep warm and conditions are

very windy as the chief mentioned. we spoke to a graffiti artist who spoke to all of his teams and i wanted to make sure he could grab what he could and tried to make it out. now the american red cross just arrived on scene and will be providing help to them and they are not sure when they will be allowed back in their apartments. live in the mission district tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. fires started after pour apower line -- started after a power line came down. alameda county firefighters responded to the scene at 11:30 last night and they say when they arrived to the power lines were arcing in the street. it took 30 minutes for the crews to put out the flames and fortunately nobody was hurt. in oakland a tree came crashing down on some power lines and a truck on bridge

avenue. police responded while pg&e crews made the repairs. no reports of any injuries there either. a high wind warning remains in effect for the east bay hills. time now, 6:03, northbound 101 after a wind related accident a car smashed into a tree. police believe high winds knocked down that tree and they are still not clear if the driver was hurt. while traffic is moving you may see debris. 27,000 customers are still without power in the santa cruz mountains, in the east bay 1200 customers are affected as well. in the south bay 880 and north of the golden gate, 185 people

without power and san francisco, they are not reporting any outages and they do have extra crews, they hope to have the power restored by the afternoon but they do warn there could be extended outages. another deadline in the occupied san francisco protest and the city has now given the protesters until the end of today to move across town. they ignored the earlier deadline of yesterday morning but city officials say the area has become a public health nuisance. they say they want them to move to a vacant school lot in the north mission district. and this one involves students at the school university. they are planning to meet at the malcolm x plaza for a rally and march. today's occupied demonstration is focused mostly on the recent

>> we are following it all but the biggest story is the wind because the wind will get your attention as you leave your house as you are driving on the bridges and if you are not paying attention you may think something is wrong with your car and that's not the case at all. it is just very windy out there and as you can see the bay bridge toll plaza, we have a bit of a back up and no major issues when it comes to stalled vehicles but certainly when driving on that span, both upper and lower deck, you will see some winds that will get your attention. if you are driving this morning on the freeways, this is a look at interstate 880 and that traffic looks good with no major problems here. let's go to antioch, bay point, pittsburgh, we don't have a huge back up and it is a little slow in antioch. it was slow a moment ago but if

you are driving on to the freeway traffic is moving well, mountain view is moving nicely on 101 and on 280 and 85. let's go to steve. all right, the source of our wind -- source of our wind, looking for bar stow, 60 miles per hour, that is a lovely morning in bar stow. 51 miles per hour yet the wind has died up in ukiah, 31 degrees. i am telling you the lows will be very quiet. they will take us to 6:00 tonight, strong high pressure to the north, there in lies the source of our strong winds and it will decrease overnight and we'll see temperatures plunge as long as that north wind holds. if it tails off, we will go

with it. there have been gusts of 54 in the last hour at the reservoir and i was just looking at half- moon airport, 57 degrees, northwest at sacramento, north at 5s o, you get the -- fs o, you get the picture, they went from 41 to 58 and as long as the wind is there, 58 mountain view and the city is still sitting at 58 degrees. the system carved its way out and the system will slowly turn, step by step, inch by inch it will go into the four corners and the wind will start to decrease a little bit. thank you dave. sunny skies, visibility is outstanding and that strong north wind is high and 60s and 70s, we will lose that wind

tonight and it will be a 3 dog night. mild conditions, yes, 75 and napa, as long as the winds holds and if it doesn't it will bring you 65. yes lows, wind protected areas will be in the 20s near the coast. right now alameda sheriff's deputies are at a home which started as a house fire overnight may turn into a criminal investigation, paul chambers is there to tell us why. paul? >> reporter: good morning and i think you may be correct as they are out here processing the scene, they are putting up yellow tape and i will tell you what leads us to believe it is a criminal investigation. crews were able to get this under control quickly because they were already fighting

another fire nearby. they were able to locate the fire to one room and they located the cause of the fire and sheriff's deputies are still on the scene. the reason this home became on fire is because of an illegal marijuana grow operation and nobody was hurt in the incident and it's unclear if the homeowners were home when the fire started. i am trying to talk to crews to find out what is going on in this home and as we said it may be considered a crime scene and of course we will stay on top of this and i will bring you further information as it develops. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. anger and grieve over a horrifying crime on the streets of oakland. >> they didn't get a man, they didn't get a teenager, they got a toddler. >> the wounded child's mother

. the parents of a toddler are hoping he lives to see his

second birthday which coming up and a gunman opened fire as he was shot in the head and is still fighting for his life. >> they didn't get a man, they didn't get a teenager, they got a toddler, a one-year-old, he has not even been here long enough. he doesn't even know what is going on and he should not have to go through this. >> the surveillance video shows the little boy in his father's arms just moments after the attack. the gunmen are still on the loose and a $35,000 reward is offered for any information that leads to an arrest. candidates are really turning up the heat on a former house speaker newt gingrich. as his rivals are looking for ways to bring him down, here is more, allison? >> reporter: the big news for newt gingrich is he is now

news. herman cane now says he will decide if he will continue with this campaign after he talks with his wife tomorrow. the republican presidential candidate said he talked with his phone since a woman from georgia went public with allegations saying he had a 13- year affair with cane. he wants to talk face to face with his wife and cane said he is a victim of character assassination by his opponents. britain has now closed its embassies on iran and london to leave within 48 hours. now the moves are in response to the attack to tehran on tuesday. british officials say iranian police allowed them to set fires and steel personal belongings of embassy staff. the germany and france

embassies and norway has temporarily -- temporarily closed their embassies until further notice. hillary rodham clinton met with the new president and urged him to release 1500 political new prisoners. it is the first time in 50 years and before leaving myanmar, she will have dinner with the president. in a report, reportedly clearing a sacramento police officer who was in their custody. tyron smith after he allegedly shot a twin rivers officer, he lost consciousness in the back of a police car while being taken to jail. an autopsy are including factors such as bronchitis and the use of marijuana. critics of the police have been worried suggesting that smith

died from excessive force. well the east bay charity group friends of oakly now expects to be able to help hundreds of families in need after all. yesterday we told you about the storage locker was broken into by thieves and $4,000 in toys blankets and food and toys were stolen. it was to help families have a nice holiday season and neighbors and businesses stepped forward with new donations replacing all of the stolen items. there was more shaking in berkeley overnight and they reported an earthquake measuring 2. 3 jolting the area and that was fathered by a -- followed by a strong after shock. it does not appear these attacks were tied to the berkeley area in october. time now 6:19 let's see what is happening with sal. >> gosh it seems like a long

time ago, we are in december now. >> my goodness, everybody. this first day, we have high winds and that means you will be driving to work and the car may be shaking. just give yourself plenty of time and westbound 80 is busy heading out to the mcarthur maze with no major problems there. also it looks good and there is a back up but it's not huge, it is about a 5 to 10 minute delay and once you get on to the bridge it does look good once you get to san francisco. traffic looks good getting to the valley and northbound 17 looks good as it turns to 880 in the san jose. if you are driving on northbound 101, it is a nice drive on westbound highway 4, it is slow from antioch to pittsburgh and after that, traffic on 680 looks good as you drive from livermore to the

valley. at 6:20 let's go back to steve. windy conditions, although some of the gusts at the surface are not too bad, 20 to 40 miles per hour. ukiah 31 degrees. big bear lakes, 60 at tahoe and 90 plus up in mt. shaft terrible. even now half-moon bay reporting gusts up to 60 miles per hour and so there are some good gusts out there and we will take the wind advisory which is 49 to 58. any breeze today takes us to the mild category and lows will take a big plunge into some 20s by tomorrow morning. if not it will be saturday

morning. sunny and windy, visibility is outstanding, yes 75 at napa and as long as the wind holds up we will go with it. nothing compared to today, look at the low, yes there will be a lot of 20s and there is a breezy event as we go from sunday to monday. starting today, doctors can prescribe generic versions of the best selling drug. patents for lipitor have expired and it should be available at discounted prices up to 50% for lipitor. pfizer sold nearly $11 billion worth of lipitor last year. there are reports two private investor groups may buy all of yahoo. if it goes through, that deal can be worth more than $25

. goods morning, a little bit of slow traffic we have a problem in the valley and we will tell you more in just a minute. they are charging for toys in kids meals and the charge only applies to restaurants in san francisco. it applies to a new city law which goes into effect today and the law prohibits

restaurants giving out toys with kids meals that don't meet strict nutritional standards. they are helping bay area schools while at the same time promoting efficiency. they are one of several schools taking part in the energize for prize program. it allows $100 for every home they sign up for an energy upgrade. the school that signs up the most homes will win $25,000. and after accidentally being shot by a dog, it all happened during a duck hunting trip. he said he and his brother-in- law were ready to get a wounded duck from the pond and that's when the dog jumped on to the boat and hit the loaded beebee gun and was shot.

expected, barns and noble is expected to report some good retail sales as well. good morning, it is thursday the first day of december, i am dave clark. for the news right now, we are following this story, two people were critically injured just hours ago in an early morning fire which happened just two hours ago in the city's mission district. tara moriarty has more on what happened, what do you know? >> reporter: two victims are critically injured with severe burns and they have been transferred to a hospital. we have learned more about the dramatic rescue where a firefighter brought a victim down that ladder. the apartments that caught fire

-- >> my roommate alice was yelling get up -- get up and i was just going why because i didn't understand and she said because there is a fire. >> reporter: now flames broke out and within three minutes, the fire was upgraded to a three-alarm fire. they are not sure if it was located in a bedroom but the fire chief told us about one dramatic rescue. oop i understand -- >> i understand one of the victims was brought down through a ladder and she was given a mask so she could have some fresh air to breathe so the firefighter had some smoke inhalation but we are not treating him. >> it is very windy out here which of course made it difficult for fire crews in this area, the city what ha lot of tune -- the city had a lot of units and wanted to make

sure the fire did not spread. they are monitoring some hot spots and they are continuing to monitor as investigators come to determine exact how how this fire started. we will of course stay here and let you know more information as it becomes available to us. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. much of the bay area is under a wind advisory and so far we have seen trees knocked down, and a lot of power outages. claudine wong joins us now with a look at some of that mess, claudine wong? >> reporter: we have seen downed christmas trees and take a look at this. we have seen this mess out here and we have all these downed fence. and we are trying to figure out if it is wind related.

yesterday these fences were standing straight up and it looks like they literally toppled because of the force of the wind. just down the street, we also saw christmas trees down and it is just a half a block from where we are. it's not going to stop anybody from boying one for the holiday but it will take awhile, it is something owners would not want to see. we have an issue of downed power lines, lines that got knocked down from the wind and this was all on 146th and east 14th street where the lines were causing a fire. >> we had power lines arcing the street and within 30 minutes we had the firelocked down and -- knocked down and -- fire locked down and contained. >> reporter: coming up live to

always post them to the ktvu channel 2 news facebook pages as well. a search is underway for a man who may have tried to kidnap a young girl. it happened near the brewing company about 7:00 last night. they walked up to a group of young girls and grabbed an 11- year-old who screamed and reportedly fought him off. police say he is a white man in his 40s 5-foot 6 inches tall with curly gray hair. he was wearing along brown coat with dark pants. today bart is expected to become the first public transit agency to limit cell phone service black outs in stations. it will only allow them to limit cell phone service during threats. they were criticized back in

using aimed at stopping a planned protest against shootings by transit police. bart's board will meet at 9:00 in oakland. also, a jury will begin the first full deliberations in the new trial. four current bart officers are accused of beating a man in 2008 at a bart station. he claimed the officers became enraged after he cursed at them. he is seeking more than a million dollars damage. that incident happened just six weeks before the fatal shooting of oscar grant. and the latest move for the occupied protesters, acl lawyers claim they used excessive force violating the protesters' constitutional rights of free speech and the lawyers took it a further step, they contain it could

discourage people from attending future demonstrations and oakland attorneys said that claim is pure speculation. here in the bay area and all over the world, people are marking world aids day. >> now this ceremony was felt on the eve of world aids day. this happened in san francisco and it has been 30 years since the first reported cases of hiv and aides in 1981. millions of people still live with the disease and millions more have lost their lives. and a red web bond -- ribbon, a big red ribbon, this is in honor of world aids day. president barack obama is taking part in a panel of discussions at the university and he is expected to talk

about plans for hiv and aides treatment here in the u.s. the commute is getting a little busier and let's check in with sal castaneda. near 580 near grant line road a multi- vehicle crash in dublin where apparently there is a person down on the road and a couple of lanes are blocked. so two not one but two crashes on 580 in this area one on the pass and the other is 580 and the traffic will be busy in that area. let's look at the bay bridge toll plaza and that's backed up for a 15 to 20 minute delay with no problems and interstate 880 in oakland looks good in both directions here. we have wind advisories going until this afternoon and actually until this evening and the culprit is that low in

southern california, a couple of inches of snow and 100 miles per hour on the southern crest of california gusts about 40 to 50 miles per hour and i have seen 40 to 57 in the last hour. we are not done yet. that low will hang out there for another day and slowly work its way back to the four corners and decrease that wind. then temperatures are going to take a plunge and it will get cold here in the mornings on friday and saturday but until 6:00 tonight, gusts are still possible in higher elevations and north wind though, northeast for many, san jose west, but north or northwest or northeast, it should start turning northeast later on. although up towards mendocino county the wind has tailed off and in napa, 45 or 46 about an

hour ago. we will have 65 sunny and breezy high today 70 degrees as long as the winds hold up we will have warm temperatures. the low will finally start to move by tonight and things will calm down a lot but the wind should tail off, and the winds keeps highs around the 60s and close to 70s, unless you are in one area which is cold and breezy -- breezy forever. with your weekend in view things will calm down and boy, the lows will be cold as we go into the weekend and blustery sunday night into monday, nothing like today though. southern california is dealing with high winds, take a look at this, this is los angeles, you can see the camera shaking and that's because of the wind gusts are up to 97 miles per hour which are

. well,good morning to you welcome back. here is a look at some of the top stories, two people were critically hurt in an early morning fire in the mission district at this apartment house at 24th and bartlett. a fire caused those -- strong winds caused those fires to spread. tara moriarty has more coming up at the top of the hour. well those strong winds sparked this fire in san leandro. the guy gutted a -- the fire

gutted a vacant building and when firefighters got there they noticed the winds caused the power lines to arc. they are giving them until noon today at justin herman plaza until noon today to move across town. they ignored an earlier deadline yesterday morning. tonights new deadline could give them enough time to get permission for an even longer stay in a downtown park under a single large canopy tent. they have had problems with the protesters in petaluma. and a house fire in san leandro, joining us now from san leandro, there are signs this is no ordinary fire investigation, paul? >> reporter: that is correct, i

spoke with a resident nearby and they say officers are over here quite often and there is a sheriff's deputy on the scene. this is now an open and active investigation by the alameda county sheriff's office because the fire was caused due to illegal activities. crews were able to get the fire under control quickly because they were already in the area fighting a different fire. the fire started in the basement of the two story home and they were able to contain it to just one room. illegal wiring is said to be the cause of the fire and investigators told me the fire is directly linked to an illegal marijuana grow but they found a substantial illegal marijuana operation with plants in various stages of growth. as for the fire nobody was hurt and nobody was present when the fire started. once again, this is an open and active investigation and sheriff's deputies are waiting

to get a search warrant so they can figure out what is going on exactly but they did say the marijuana grow operation was in various stages of growth. live in san leandro, i am paul chambers ktvu channel 2 news. they are expecting to raise taxes to deal with california's budget deficit. the governor wants to put his plan and he will ask voters to approval a temporary sales tax and raising income palm rates for people -- income tax rates for people who earn more than $250,000 a year. a crash on 580 in dublin, sal castaneda? coming up -- coming up to the 880 interchange, they have confirmed a fatality but traffic is being allowed in left lane only, emergency crews

are there and traffic is backed up all the way to the pass. this is a major problem for interstate 580 driving from livermore to caster valley and it's going to be there for a bit as police have to do their investigation. again 580 after santa rita road, an injury crash after one person is confirmed dead. this is a look at 880 westbound getting out to the mcarthur maze and that traffic is moderately heavy. traffic is backed up at the bay bridge toll plaza for 10 to 15 minutes and i would say it's right into between those two. here is steve. up the skyline over to the santa cruz mountains and oakland hills and out to black

hawk, 40-mile-per-hour winds and it is producing some snow up in big bear lake and winds up to 60 to 80 miles per hour and i have seen 50 plus near tahoe but things are calming down for some, mendocino 30 mile-per-hour winds gusts so it just depends on where you are wind advisories are out, still getting gusts up to 70 though. it allows temperatures to be very mild. santa rosa went from 48 to 59 in one hour. our temperatures will be near 70 degrees once that wind tails off, temperatures will plunge and there is a very cold air mass coming in, as long as the air mass holds, get ready for very cold lows an extremely dry air mass, there will not be any fog. mid-70s for some and then

tonight we say goodbye to most of that wind. that is not on the coast and that will be for inland areas. another blustery system, as another system drops down on sunday and monday. several retailers are reporting strong sales for november. nordstrom reported 5-point 5% compared to last year. and macy's another 5% jump in sales. this retailer, sales at target were up but less than 2%. gap defied the trend, november sales at the gap down 5% from last year. the latest job sales, new unemployment claims rose by 6,000 to 402000 last week and applications were less than 400,000 for less than three weeks. a lot of uncertainty still in

. stock exchange dow jones industrial average down 12 points and today we are talking retailers, a lot of them coming in with good november sales. university is warning students to be on alert after one student was tied up and robbed at gunpoint. it happened just before 8:00 tuesday night in an apartment on campus. a man and woman broke into a graduate housing unit, tied up the person inside stole a laptop, wallets and cash. the person who was robbed was

not hurt. one of the robbers is described as latino with medium build and the woman he was with is also latino and 20 - 30 years old and was wearing dark clothing. it started west of priest valley road, about 50 acres burned and the fire was contained by about 5:00 this morning. no reports of you injuries and no word on what sparked that fire but a burn ban has been issued through saturday. we now know the cause of that fire which destroyed an apartment complex in berkeley. it started in the basement of the building with an electrical malfunction. two well-known businesses are damaged as well and the reports say the building had a history of problems one of which was

caused back in february. nevada is planning to host a bid for the olympics in lake tahoe. remember this, they hosted the games back in 1960 and the last winter games were in salt lake city in 2002. denver has approached the national committee about hosting the 2022 olympics and the decision about that year will not be made for another three years. coming up on 7:00, let's check in with sal castaneda for traffic. we have slow traffic all over the bay and we have that accident i will tell you about but this is 237 as you cross 880 stop-and-go traffic. also north and southbound right passed with the coliseum, it's nice and clear and i want to mention there is a grass fire near highway 9 and 17 and
