good morning, thank you for waking up with us it's monday, december 5th i'm pam cook. >> and i'm dave clark. we have rosemary. >> good morning, to you. more of the same. that's what we are look for this afternoon. this morning we are dealing with the winds. the national weather service has actually canceled the wind advisory for our hills. the wind out there is just enough to bring our temperatures up anywhere from 10-20 degrees warmer than yesterday morning. so we will take a look at that. meanwhile your afternoon will be sunny and dry. good morning, sal. rosemary good morning, to you. on san francisco 101 traffic looks pretty good. a little breezy in the city. and on interstate 80 westbound it's getting more crowded on the way to the bay bridge toll plaza. let's go back to the desk. topping our news at 6:00. it is bad news for people that love red vines. early this morning workers at

licorice plant went on strike. kraig debro is there. >> reporter: behind me you can see the striking workers. last nights shift ended around 9:30:00 p.m.. today's first shift was supposed to start at 3:30:00 p.m. but when they showed up they started walking the picket line. now the company says they are walking picket lines over health care. but it's not the only other issue in the strike. instead of arriving to take their place at a specific job inside they are getting instructions on where to walk and hold the sign. the american licorice company hasn't responded to the allegations so far. the company makes red vine licorice. someone on the inside of the fence tolidine they would formant a reseasons and give it to us as soon as possible. the union company wants them to start making a copay through their health care benefit.

the union says workers haven't had to do either. health care is not the only issue in the strike. >> and wages. we want a little bit higher wages. the least senior people that live here is 15 years and up. >> we don't have very much. one guy has been working here for 35 years. 33 years. i believe they should have a little bit better benefit for them. >> reporter: up until now the workers said they had a very good relationship with the company. this is the first strike they have had here ever. he did say a couple years ago the company did manage to take away their retirement their medical care for retirees. they say they didn't put up a fight then. now they are upset at having to come back and strike over the second round of take aways. again i'm trying to reach a representative with the american licorice company to get their side. reporting live kraig debro ktvu

channel 2 news. there was gunfire at a burger king in redwood city. it was a double shooting. ktvu tara moriarty is in redwood city now to tell us the details of the get away car. >> reporter: it's a white buick with tinted windows. that is the biggest clue investigators have to go on. we did speak to an employee here at the burger king. there are no surveillance cameras on the outside of the building but there are some inside. perhaps it can show something. two people were shot here in the parking lot around 7:00 last night. we are off middle field road. redwood city police say one victim ran inside the fast food place to get help. one victim was shot in the arm. the other twice in the leg. now there is a place to buy christmas trees nearby. quite a few people were out and about doing their holiday shopping. they heard gunshots and saw the suspects drive up a. again

police are looking for four people in connection with this shooting. two ran away. the other two described only has hispanic men around 30 years old escaped in that white buick. investigators should be arriving to the station in a half hour or so. hopefully we can get more information from them and pass it along to you. we are live in redwood city. 6:04. unidentified oakland man was seriously hurt. he was shot outside his families home. this happened just after midnight at 105th avenue. she was shot in the chest. investigators say the attack may have been an attempted robbery. san francisco police are investigating a frightening accident involving a speeding car and neighborhood bar. it happened last night in the western edition. police say the driver clipped another car then smashed into the high tides bar on geary and jones. both the driver and its female passenger were rushed to san francisco general hospital.

now there is no word on their condition but no one inside the bar was hurt. and police say it was fortunate the crash took place on a sunday night when it's not crowded because on saturday night dozens of people were actually standing outside the bar at that time. time now 6:05. dozens of san francisco residence are in temporary housing. fire chased them out of their apartments. it started yesterday morning at this 40 unit building on eddie street in the tenderloin. at least 60 people right now getting temporary housing help from the red cross. the cause of the fire is blamed on a discarded cigarette. >> i guess i was more fortunate because there was other apartments that were more badly burnt. >> most of the residence will be able to go back home today. expect for those that lived in seven of the units that were badly damaged. meantime oakland firefighters are investigating a fire that left two families homeless. this one started yesterday morning at 28th and market

streets. more than a dozen firefighters battled the flames. no injuries are reported. concord police want to know who has been shooting and killing geese. seven dead geese were found saturday morning. police believe all of them were deliberately shot. this isn't the first time this has happened either. on november 9th, more than a dozen dead geese were found. nine of them at concord's willow pass pork. investigators believe they were all shot with a pellet rifle. two occupy santa cruz demonstrations were stopped by sheriffs deputies. early yesterday two protestors were arrested after demonstrators were removed from a county building they took over. deputies moved in on protestors that took over a downtown bank. 30 protestors left peacefully. there were no arrests. authorities are now putting

together a detailed report. criminal charges may be filed against those responsible. some san francisco -- are setting up a plan for a new occupy sf camp in their neighbor. they wants the protest to move out. one neighborhood group is worried the occupy camp could cause a public health risk. also concern about crime. many occupy sf protestors. saying they tonight want to move. another lucky super market seems to have been hit with a debt card scam. the latest reports come from a lucky store in petaluma. customers and employees at the store report as much as $1,000 withdrawn from accounts linked to their atm cards. that is after they used their atm cards at the stores self- check out line. last month skimming devices were found at self-check out

lines. today senate majority leader harry reid plans to introduce a compromise measure to extend the payroll tax cut that is set to expire at the end of the month. republicans rejected a previous proposal to raise taxes on wealthy americans to cover the cost of extending the tax cut. coming up we'll have a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom with the new way democrats are proposing to pay for the tax cut. 6:09. southern california residence preparing for the return of those santa ana winds. in fact a red flag warning went into effect at 4:00 a.m. this morning. crews are still cleaning up from last weeks wind storm. wind gusts up to 70 miles an hour are also expected. this is triggered a fire alert issued for the area. firefighters say the hides winds will quickly fans any flames that may ignite. after four days of darkness power is back on for residence

welcome back. a new threat this morning from the japanese nuclear power plant. the one that almost melted down by that march earthquake. as much as 12 gallons of radio active water leaked over the weekend. some of the radiation may have reached the pacific ocean. the water could have one million times as much radiation

as the japanese government says is safe. anyone who is close or effected by it could develop cancer by eating tainted seaweed and fish also absorbing that radiation in their bodies. dr.s in washington, d.c. will try again this week to try to push the payroll tax cut through congress. alison burns is in your washington, d.c. newsroom with a new way of how they will pay for the tax cut. >> reporter: pam, you know this payroll tax cut expires at the end of the month. time is running out for congress to strike a deal. democrats and republicans have been at odds over how to pay for it. today senate democratic leader harry reid will introduce a new plan to offset the cost. they will use savings from winding down the wars in iraq and afghanistan but that plan may not be pop with republicans -- popular with republicans. the white house has posted a

a news conference today. right now a conference on the future of afghanistan is around way in germany. about 100 countries and international organizations will be represented. 60 foreign ministers including secretary of state hillary clinton is in attendance. they will discuss afghanistan's future after most foreign military forces leave the country. >> the entire region has a stake in afghanistan's future and much to lose if the country company becomes a source of terrorism and instability. >> pakistan decided not to attend the conference. they are boycotting because of a recent nato air strike that killed pakistani soldiers. conference participates are discussing the transfer of security responsibility and long-term prospects for international aid. time now 6:18. sal, how is 880 look something

>> it's looking pretty good. there is a new crash on the bay bridge dave and pam. westbound bay bridge is on the incline section of the bridge. and we want to show you the toll plaza because the toll plaza is getting very slow. that's what will happen. we will slow down the metering lights as the toll plaza starts stacking up because of this new crash on the bay bridge westbound incline section. let's go out and take a look at 880 now. traffic is moving well in both directions here on interstate 880 as you drive north and south in front of the coliseum. this mornings drive is going to be okay here in the south bay. along 280, 101, and 85. let's go to rosemary. thank you very much, sal. good morning, to you. we are look at temperatures big range of temperatures depending on where you are at. if you are not dealing with the wind, chances are you are sitting in the mid to upper 30s and 40s. if you have wind outside your door perhaps 40s and 50s. we are looking at a 22 miles an

hour wind at santa rosa. napa 12 miles an hour. 16 right now reported in fairfield. had to take a second look at fairfield. that is the calmest we have seen it all morning. calm in livermore. we had winds pick up in the last hour or so. it doesn't look bad right now. light breeze around san francisco and oakland. so high pressure will remain in control of our weather pattern. we will be sunny. we will be dry. temperatures very similar to what we felt over the weekend. the winds continuing to blow throughout the afternoon. not too bad. but anywhere from 5-10 miles an hour. 15 is a little breezy. this morning again if you are sheltered from the wind perhaps a very chilly start. temperatures similar to yesterday. maybe even a little cooler. areas like santa rosa and napa where we are seeing that wind sitting in the 50s at this hour. that is a whole lot warmer than yesterday. sunny and cool afternoon

expected. upper 50s for your lunch hour. 60 degrees today for oakland. 62 san jose. 59 san mateo as well as san francisco. upper 50s along the coastline. extended forecast not a lot of change going on. we are going to lose the winds for tomorrow morning. we are talk about it a little bit because that is going to mean very cold temperatures. freezing and sub freezing numbers as we start tuesday morning. could equal frost and freezish use there. wednesday, thursday, and friday will be dry and mild with a cool start. facebook has big plans to expand. that means hiring at least 1,000 new employees in the coming year. social networking giant is preparing to go public next year. that is purring its growth. most of its current 3,000 workers are in palo alto and seattle with a marketing office in new york. some of the new hires will be engineers that will also be based in new york. national gas prices are slipping. the average price for a gallon of regular is $3.28 a gallon

which is down an average of two cents a gallon. here in the bay area prices are higher as usual. prices have dropped more than a nickel in the last week. drivers in san francisco are paying $3.72. prices in the east and south bay an average $3.64. universal studios may open a west coast version of the wizarding world of harry potter. they can walk through the hogwarts castle and ride on the flight of the hippo. and no plans to open the park until at least 2015. the florida theme park opened 18 months ago. even more being considered for asia. expect more police patrols in san francisco's most popular tourist spots during the holidays. how the police will crack down on aggressive panhandler. also this disturbing incident at a college football game. raising questions about stadium

francisco police. city is trying to make sure tourists enjoy their holiday season. police are hoping to curb the problem of aggressive panhandling. while asking for money is legal, when a panhandler follows you or blocks or threatens a person that becomes aggressive. police say that won't be tolated. >> i felt like we may have been approached a bit more frequently in years past. maybe a little bit more aggressively which is unnerving for him honestly. and this year we really haven't seen very many. >> police say they will handle aggressive panhandling on a case by case basis. in some cases the person can be warned, they can be cited, or

heading up. we will smile and say good morning, to you. thank you for joining us here. it is monday, december 5th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. thank you for joining us. time now 16:30. we want to go over to sal. there is a crash on the bay bridge. >> that is right westbound bay bridge. it's actually on the incline section. you can see it. there is an injury crash blocking the two left lanes. one of them involves one of the vehicles involved is an ac transit bus. give yourself extra time to get on the bridge. what happens is they switch the metering lights on to extra slow as emergency vehicles arrive and trying their best to get this out of the way. i'm afraid this will be bad news for the bay bridge if you are trying to get into san francisco. this could actually effect your commute for long time because even if they were to get rid of this, the bay bridge toll plaza is very, very slow.

it will take awhile to unwind. again two lanes blocked. westbound bay bridge with an injury crash. leave the house early. think about using wart of a different way to get into san francisco from the east bay. let's move along and take a look at it. let's go back to the desk. >> that is a major story. we will get back to you with what is happening at the bay bridge. a police search is under way for whoever is responsible for a double shooting that happened on the peninsula. it happened in the parking lot of a burger king restaurant. ktvu tara moriarty is in redwood city now. and you just talked to an employee at the store that told you police are -- don't have a really critical clue they are looking for right now. tara. >> that is right. you know you can imagine they were hoping to see surveillance video. the workers here tell us the camera which is located inside. it's just above the camera and soda machines. it doesn't work. and it hasn't worked for some time apparently. so really the biggest clue we know of the investigators have

people at oakland rock ridge neighborhood about armed robberies. these fliers can be seen up and down through the neighborhood. now one mugging is reported from last month. two men told a female victim to lay down on the sidewalk and stole their purse. stay right here with ktvu channel 2 morning news. we are checking with oakland police this morning. we will find out what they are saying about the passing out of these new flyers. support of oakland is making a public plea. the port authority has taken out a full page add in the oakland tribune asking the demonstrators to keep the busy port open during the holidays. this is part of a strategy by occupy oakland to block the port if a few weeks. last month the demonstrators were able to bring the port to a standstill as part of the november 2nd day of action. occupy organizers have a new target for their protests. ahead in 15 minutes where they are asking members and supporters to demonstrate tomorrow for a national day of

action. your time now 6:34. this morning the u.s. postal service is about to announce major changes including a longer delivery time for your first class mail. allie rasmus is at a mail processing plant in oakland to tell us how all of this is going to effect you. >> reporter: first class mail includes any letters sent with a first class postage stamp and some pack annals and -- some packages and periodicals. right now it takes 1-3 days for first class mail to arrive at its destination. come this spring they are warning it could take anywhere from 2-5 days for first class mail to arrive. it's all because of proposed cuts the u.s. postal service is thinking of making to its processing facilities. they are considering closing about half of its mail processing facilities. about 250 of those facilities 500 facilities nation-wide.

fewer processing facilities mean it will take longer to sort and deliver mail. especially to the outlining suburbs. the postal service is trying to deal with a projected $14 billion loss next year. we heard about the financial problems they have been facing for the past several years. if you take us back out here live, this processing facility we are standing in front of in oakland is not on that projected closure list. there is a processing facility in petaluma that is. a lot of people in the north bay got fliers warning them the north bay facility is on that projected closure list. that is supposed to effect people. zip codes that start be 954 or 955 area code. walnut creek police are look for two people involved in an attempted high end purse theft over the weekend. it happened saturday night at the nordstrom department store. investigators say an oakland

man ann out of the store with $- - ran out of the store with $10,000 worth of purses. he is also accused of using pepper spray on customers that tried to tackle him. they are still looking for his female accomplice and get away driver. a brief scare at at & t park over the week. it was all caught on camera. just like that. this happened saturday night. a stadium rail collapsed during the bcs title game. some of the fans toppled to the ground below. show it to you again. now happily no one was seriously hurt. no one had to be taken to the hospital. later today demolition crews should finish tearing down a berkeley apartment building damaged by fire. only part of an exterior wall remains of what used to be a four story building on

telegraph. the fire last month severely damaged the building leading engineers to call for its demolition. no one was injured in that fire but 70 people lost their homes including several ucbergly students. 6:37. we have a major commute mess near the bay bridge. often sal will say it's done. you haven't said that yet. >> yeah we are trying to be optimistic. i'm thinking that is now the case. two left lanes continue to be blocked. whenever that happens for any length of time we usually do have very bad commute for the rest of the morning. here it is. the peak of the commute and two left lanes are closed at the bay bridge. incline section because of an injury accident involving an ac transit bus and other vehicles. police and fire on the scene. traffic is backed up big time and backing unto the east shore now. you will see the east shore freeway is going to be slow. this will have a chain reaction in all the east bay commutes.

let's move along and take a look at the santa clara valley which is not effected by much of this. there is a crash northbound 280 looks good. so does 85 and 17 into the santa clara valley. let's go to rosemary. it will be a pleasant monday afternoon. relatively speaking. we are in early december. we are dry. clear skies and we will continue with sunshine as we progress through your workweek. this morning and at this hour we are cool and breezy in some areas. fairfield 26 miles an hour gusts still reported at this time. 22 miles an hour the winds this santa rosa. 12 napa. livermore the winds die down and have yet to pick back up. areas around san jose a light breeze. hayward all reporting a light breeze. for the most part this wind has been enough to stir up that cold air we see sink to the bottom and stick right about now. temperatures although sitting in the 30s earlier this morning

their on strike signs. whipple road is a busy road. they will have a big audience this morning. the worker says the last shift here was 9:30 saturday night. the first shift today workers are supposed to start to arrive at 6:30. so far according to the union no workers have crossed the picket lines. there is about 178 unionized organizers. the strike is over health care benefits. right now the company pays into into a union trust fund. that pays for the union workers health care benefits. the company wants to stop paying into that trust fund and have the workers go on their own health care insurance. that will require the unions pay a deductible one union representative said is worth thousands of dollars. what does that mean to the workers? one worker said the plan being offered by the company now means that if they took that plan, her son would be without health care. >> my son is a student and on the plan he has right now he's

claim proves officers did not use excessive force on a dui driver. officers pulled the suspect over for making several illegal turns. police say the suspect disoboed their commands -- disobeyed their commands and a fight insued. the officer used his stun gun 13 times to subdue him. the city of oakland takes an important step today. the police department will unvail its new academy members later this morning. it's the first academy to see city laid off officers. there are ten trainees today. all were scheduled to become police officers until the recent layoffs. the money for them comes from a $10 million justice department grant. the city of oakland will hire 25 police officers and assign
