tampered card reads and. good evening. >> federary authorities call it one of the most high end operations they have seen. a lucky market chain is take a unusual step and telling people they may need to cancel credit cards or change their bank accounts. lloyd is live in san jose where he has learned at least 80 people have reported compromised accounts after using tampered card readers at luckies. >> reporter: i'm one of the lucky stores's, one of 23 where credit and debit account information has been stolen. a sign is posted warning customers to check their statements and close their accounts immediately if something is wrong. officials say the problem started customers swiping their cards at theself check out stands. >> they said somebody put magnetic device of some sort onto machine and it took

information. >> reporter: it happened in lucky stores, save marte the parent company said it was found during routine maintenance. we talked to the company's chief financial officer on the phone. he said they found board sniffer devices. >> the secret service said that it's the most high end device they have seen in the united states. they planted a second head in our units and the computer board picked up the information, the credit card numbers. >> reporter: the company said so far 80 people have reported money taken or suspicious activity of their account. the amount is in the thousands of dollars. >> i guess i was very surprised something like this could happen. >> makes me wonder how someone could do this and come under the management's -- you know,

. police officers in the bay area's largest city are calling in sick in record numbers. what was happening during the two biggest spikes. >> reporter: san jose police chief recalls one day 15 out of 100 called in sick. >> it wasn't a lot of margin for something happening. >> reporter: they were sketched in mid-october while look agent homicide of two students and a officer involved shooting. >> that was a lesson we learned that we wanted to make sure we have coverage. >> reporter: this year police department employees have taken more than 132,000 sick hours, up 40% from last year. sick calls spiked in february after the department announced layoffs and in june right before they went into effect. >> is that concern you? >> it does. it just means we need to be watching everywhere. >> reporter: this resident

before the city started layoffs last year but the academy training was cut short because of budget cuts. >> i get it start my dream job. a long path in the making. >> reporter: the grant money will also rehire four laid off officers and hire 11 more. the department should have some 670 officers. >> the number of homicides in the constituent dropped last year to the lowest level since 1966. in 2010 the california department of justice counted 1809 homicides, a drop of 8% compared to the year before. hispanics made up the largest number of victims, gangs and drugs were the top factor. a val johan man in jail for allegedly stabbing a man to death inside his apartment. police say officers responded
