the overnight hours and we are dealing with a frost and freeze advisory depending on where you are at. north bay locations a freeze warning and it is lasting until about 9:00 this morning and we will look at your temperatures and show you what you can expect today, here is sal. the traffic is getting notably more crowded as you head west and also it is looking good on 880 southbound. let's go back to the desk. well we have been talking about it all morning and kraig debro is up in petaluma where there is a freeze warning in effect, kraig? >> reporter: it is not quite freezing just yet but you will see the temperature is 35 degrees and then up want to show you some moisture in the street here. about an hour ago the moisture

that was left hereby a street cleaner, it is -- here by a street cleaner, it's still there. people are wearing hoods, doing anything they can to keep out of the cold. what is good for people is sometimes good for plants as well. that is why workers at a nursery are making sure plants needing protection from the cold got the protection they needed. that is especially important for overnight, they have issued an advisory for parts of the east bay. >> it is just plant protection right now if we are talking 28 degrees. burlap, anything that creates a barrier for frost to land so it will land on that barrier and not on plant. >> reporter: now your pet can also be affect by the cold. if you have your pet out overnight, you can put a sweater on him but what if you have a pet that lives outdoors

because one of the people in your house is allergic to the pet air, but according to the veterinarian, there is a way to conquer this need, to protect both and one solution has to do with where you keep your pet at night. if it is normally an outdoor pet, you can bring it into the garage and you can -- you can bring your pet into the garage and that way your pet can stay warmer and you can put a heater in the garage as well. >> if they are not a house pet, put them in to the garage just make sure there are no poisons or toxins. maybe close to the hot water heater or heater of the house. >> now we have calls coming into the napa count tip

sheriff's office -- county sheriff's office. >> reporter: on boulevard and sea street we spoke to a woman going for a run this morning and hopefully we will have a chance to talk to these cold weather warriors in a minute, kraig debro channel 2 news. the red cross is helping several people left out in the cold after an early morning house fire in oakland. that fire started 2:00 a.m. at a two story home at 30th street in linden. everybody was able to get out of the home safely but the fire did cause major damage. investigators are still looking for the cause but early evidence points to some type of electrical problem. new protests starting today and the home foreclosure, this national day is called occupy

our homes. demonstrations and 20 others are planned. they plan to rally to the park supporting people who have lost their homes. and in other cities, protesters will take over homes that are facing foreclosure and demanding that the banks negotiate with home onliers -- homeowners. l.a. times reports a 26-year-old woman died last night after falling 75 feet from the ship's walkway into chilly long beach harbor. a man who jumped into the water to try and resident cue her had -- rescue her had to be treated for hypothermia. a man was hit and killed in san jose. it happened near old tullely road. officers say the man was crossing monterey highway when he was hit by a pickup truck.

officers say drugs and alcohol were not involved. water and sewerage rates are going up in petaluma. the city council voted to raise rates last night. water rates are going up 3.8%. sewerage bills will increase 6.2% but city leaders say it is necessary to help pay for water investment in the water system. two people were killed in two separate attacks that occurred on a muslim holy day. look at this video, the very moment the suicide bomber blew himself up in kabul. we will bring you a live report and we are getting reaction from the top american commander in afghanistan. back here at home for the third straight year a record number of graduates have applied to the university

system. freshmans have submitted more than 2 5,000 and that's up from 605 from last year and this time, latino applicants out number white applicants. and cal state and east bay had '18% increase. san jose a 9% increase. sonoma applications were up 8%. later this morning food trucks will move into frank ogawa plaza and they will be there as part of an event. they are discussing new legislation to allow food pod events than will create a legal permit process to allow trucks to work in parts of the city. copper thieves are causing

big traffic problems in vallejo and it appears city work crews cannot keep up with it. allie rasmus has been speaking with people there, allie? >> reporter: off to our right is the bay and where we are sitting right now is a pretty nice walking trail but if you walk up to that intersection, this is what you will see. red flashing lights and neighbors tell us the lights have been out for the past three months. the public work's department knows the lights are out but they don't have resources to fix it and that's why they put up a sign for pedestrians and drivers to see. the sign says traffic light, not functioning because of copper wire theft. this is mounted on to a metal post. some of the neighbors like the fact that they are explaining what is going on here, others

commute. >> black ice could be a problem. this is a look at the approach to the toll plaza because it is getting more crowded in another ten minutes or so and they will turn those metering lights on. trying to get into san francisco, so far looks good if you are driving northbound 101, this is northbound 101 approaching the 80 split, no problems on southbound 101. if you are driving, it is a nice drive all the way to san joaquin valley and if you are driving southbound you can see traffic is moving well on fremont and northbound 101 on 280, those freeways look good, let's go to rosemary. grab the hats and gloves. santa rosa napa all checking in

at 32 degrees, the bay and closer to the water it helps to moderate temperatures, 33 oakland, a chilly start red wood city 37, 40 degrees mountain view, the difference between yesterday and today, a whole lot. 20 degrees for parts of the north bay valleys where we had the winds and temperatures were sitting in the lower 50s. you may like the chris cold calm air -- crisp cold calm air better but anyway the frost advisory is for our east bay valleys for 9:00. the freeze warning is sitting anywhere between 25 and 30 degrees through the early morning hours and the advisory for the east bay, 30 to 35 general left temperatures a chilly start to the morning and we'll see a nice rebound, we will be sunny and cool in the

. new this morning, the death toll is rising from at least three explosions in afghanistan targeting worshipers on a shi'ite holy day. here is reaction from the top u.s. commander from afghanistan. >> reporter: that is right i

just got a statement from the commando of nato forces in afghanistan. he said an attack on pilgrims on this holy day is an attack on islam. the explosion targeted worshipers and this explosion in kabul was caught on camera. in this attack a man blew himself out, you can see people fleeing from the scene. more than 160 people were hurt, dozens injured, another explosion happened in the northern city where a bomb strapped to a bicycle exploded as a convoy of shiites were driving down the road. while it is more common in pakistan, it is more rare in afghanistan. they are calling on the leader toddle agree text act of -- it

president but his plan "b" is to change it from the outside. illinois former governor rod blagojevich was accused of trying to sell president barack obama's former senate seat. they want to hand down a 15 to 20 year prison sentence. they are looking into a defense friendly and may not have a problem doing something against the prosecution's recommendation. she was at the center of a while lie pub -- of a highly publicized murder trial. she is working with an attorney now who is well-known for brokering book deals. amanda knox returned home and was convicted in 2009 in italy of her roommate's death but was

freed after that conviction was overturned. we have learned it was approved to build a sports complex. they are approving a 4-1 vote occurring this morning. several people signed up to speak on this issue. it is right there on the oakland piedmont border. it would include soccer and baseball fields. >> the number in favor were more than those opposed. it's as good as any for this proposal. >> not everyone supports this sports complex. critics are worried about traffic congestion as well as pedestrian safety. >> pedestrian safety is definitely something sal talks about occasionally, how is

traffic this morning, sal? of course we watch out for all forms of transport, if you are walking or takes being certain forms of bart, you can see traffic is busy but it is stop and go in antioch if you are driving there and also stop- and-go traffic on interstate 680 already from concord to walnut creek. this morning's toll plaza is backed up and meeterring lights came on. maybe there is a back up of about 10 minutes and it is growing at the toll plaza. road sensors are not showing a lot of traffic on 585 to cupertino. it is a nice drive on 101 all the way to san jose and as we look at livermore we have slow traffic already on westbound 580 livermore. let's did to rosemary.

a chill in the air, goose bumps and temperatures dropping back into the 20s and 30s in some of our valley locations. you can see the freeze warning is widespread. east bay valley not lit up but i can tell you a frost advisory is expected through 9:00 for our valley spots there. we have calm conditions, just a light breeze out there this morning but we have a cool dry air mass in place and our temperatures really plunged. 31 in snap a, petaluma -- 31 in napa, petaluma, i can't pick up the number there but we are making observations. in livermore low 40s right around san francisco as well as oakland and 38 degrees in san jose. 48 degrees at fso.

satellite radar, you can see mostly clear skies, we have a ring of -- ridge of high pressure in place and it will remain in place. temperatures sitting in the mid- to-upper 50s for lunchtime. we will have light winds so it should feel mild for the most part. sunsetting at 4:51, another round of what we saw yesterday, we were pretty brisk yesterday and the winds did not die down until the evening hours. you can see all the way through the weekend upper 30s as we progress through the week for the overnight hours, back to you. they are joining forces in a daily deals business and clear channel which owns wild 94 in the bay area is adding stations owned by cumulus

coffee shop had condensation on the window caused by hot on the inside cold on the outside. in areas has issued a frost bay for parts of the north bay and a frost advisory for parts of the east bay. we ran into firefighters who had been out on a call already this morning and they say that call had a lot to with something they see a lot this time of year. >> we saw gas in this structure, somebody turned the heater on and the heater malfunctioned and the gas got into the utilities. >> the gas was shut off but firefighters see a lot of gas type accidents, people turning on their furnace for the first time or their heaters you are

looking at things like pets when it starts to get cold and there are plants that need to be covered up to keep their branches from breaking off and pets same thing. some pets done need it because their if you are is thick -- fur is thick enough. some need to be taken in and coming up we will have more from the firefighters on what are the most important things to do this time of year. kraig debro ktvu channel 2 news. police are continuing search for his attackers. the incident happened shortly after 6:00 half the night near a payable park. the 19-year-old was stabbed multiple times and he is now being treated at a local hospital.$♪ but his condition is not being released. >> right now police are

canvassing the neighborhood and then we will start processing this crime scene. >> there are reports there were three male attackers but anybody with information is asked to call the police. a body was found underneath 680 and 580 overpass. the body was inside of a sleeping bag and it appears he had been dead for several days. police are waiting for a medical examiners report and they don't think foul play was involved. they are warning customers to check their bank accounts following a widespread credit card scam. they have posted signs warning customers to check bank statements and close accounts if something seems wrong. somebody installed card skimmers at self check out stands.

>> the secret service tells me it is the most sophisticated device they have ever seen in the united states. >> i guess i was surprised that something like this could happen. >> so far the amount is in the thousands of dollars. they have now checked the card readers at all of its stores and has removed all of those skimmers. they will consider banning plastic bags and the expansion would ban any plastic bags at any retail outlets including restaurants. if this is approved it will take affect in july. ed lee is trying to persuade the 49ers to stay in

san francisco, however mayor ed lee is planning on meeting this week to talk about building a new stadium at hunter's point. last week the city of santa clara worked out the financial arrangements to seal a deal for a billion dollars stadium for the 49ers. three banks pledged $850 million and the rest of the money will come from hotel tax and possibly redevelopment money. mitt romney will be in the bay area to attend a fundraiser. they will endorse mitt romney today. police were out there searching for hours and the suspected gunman was finally found. he was on the roof of an apartment building near jack london square. look at center of your television screen. you can see the man crawling up the edge of the piling. he was a suspect yesterday

afternoon and they think he actually threw his gun off that same pulling. traffic problems, it appears the city cannot keep up with the crimes. allie rasmus is in vallejo with more on the story, allie? >> reporter: it is a problem the people in vallejo seem to be aware of and people have stopped to pull over and talk to us about problems they have seen with intersections and lights that are out because of copper wire thieves. this is daniel and the lights are flashing and the traffic signals have been broken for the past through months neighbors tell us and the city's public works department knows it's broken and they have put up signs which read,

traffic lights not functioning because of thieves. the city has 30 repairs just to do for the past couple of weeks and the city does not have all of the resources to fix them. city leaders have put the repairs on hold for now and that's the reason they have put up the signs to explain they know about the problems, they just can't do anything right now. >> if i have to cross, i worry that people will actually see me. put it does upset me people are doing that. >> reporter: and some of the residents around here say they feel a little unsafe crossing the street again because of the traffic signals are broken and the crosswalk signs don't work. there are 77 lighting fixtures that had copper wiring stolen since may and it has cost the

city $200,000 in repairs and when copper thieves are usualliable to reseller what they take at $25 each and that is a shame. >> hear that car roaring behind allie? sal, how are the cars doing now? >> well they are not driving as fast as that yahoo. i am just kidding he probably had a different muffler. there was a crash near summersville road and a minor one, the traffic is mild on 680 going towards the creek. westbound interstate 880 right now pebble road, there is a crash on the shoulder and it is not causing a major back up.

moving towards fremont, the traffic looks good from hayward to fremont. and this morning if you are driving in san jose northbound 280 in san jose it looks good getting up to highway 17. also looking good coming over the hill with no major surprises on the way down to the valley. and we are braving a cold snap here in the valley and there you can see a light breeze. when you do have a slight breeze, temperatures are expected to feel five degrees cooler than what they read. santa rosa 27 degrees and the airport in petaluma that is one of the chill thinker spots. -- chillier spots. san jose sitting right at 38 degrees, half hour to sunrise and once we see the sunshine

temperatures will turn around. we have an advisory in place for the east bay valley firefighter advisory and temperatures are expected to sit at the 34 degrees mark. that freeze warning is indicating temperatures are sitting in the 20s so again until the afternoon, we have a sunny pleasant tie. ridge of humidity is still overhead and we will be right where we should be this time of year. in the afternoon we will feel better. 61 for berkeley this afternoon, 61 expected in hayward, santa clara 61 and 62 in san jose, 61 degrees this afternoon by the coast there in santa cruz. extended forecast, temperatures will not bulging a whole lot, we will warm gradually, it will be a modest warmup. cold tomorrow, perhaps not as cold and once we get passed

at the historic queen mary. the woman was 26 years old. the occupied -- a rally at the occupied movement starts today. tara moriarty joins us with more with the plan for today, tara? >> reporter: well occupied protesters plan to leave their tents and instead occupy some homes. they are trying to draw attention to the people who have lost their homes because of foreclosures. there is still a couple of occupied protesters there. town at the plaza one of the protesters was getting out of hand and very foul mouthed and actually spit on us and we had to leave. most of the protesters have been excited about the event for today because they are engaging in something called

home defense. you may roll, occupied protesters occupied a for closed lot. they were kicked out because the homeowner said she didn't give permission. and later in oakland this morning, one group plans to march with the bank with a mother and her three the children to demand new loan. this affects everybody in their homes, their the children, their day-to-day life, they are waiting for the sheriff to come and throw them out of their homes. >> 6 million americans have lost their homes and another 5 million are at risk. marches are planned all over the u.s. including new york and l.a. and coming up, we will meet a driver in l.a. who is in danger of losing her home. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. later today, mitt romney will be endorsed by former vice-

president dan quail. he will endorse him later today and he comes here to the area where he will not make any public appearances. well newt gingrich is not backing away from controversial statements about child labor. in an appearance with donald trump in new york, he still thinks poor children will be given a chance to learn poor work habits. he will tree eight -- create an apprentice program similar to his reality show he has and donald trump likes that idea. double trouble today, city leaders consider some stiff fines for city parking, that is coming up on mornings on 2 this morning. how is the commute, sal? it is going to be busier

now than we told you last time. traffic outside the toll plaza is backed up for a 15 to 20 minute delay, no mail problems getting into san francisco. if you are driving northbound 101 that looks good coming up to the split and on the dumbarton, no major delays and the winds has not been a probably him as it -- problem as it has been over the past few days. 20 minutes until the official sunrise and we will finally see some of our temperatures turnaround. it is a shimmering start out there, below freezing in our north bay valley in some locations, napa 31 but that is a is reporting a very light breeze and outside it feels more like 27 december grease.

concord -- -- feels more like 27 degrees. 37 in red wood city and in palo alto 35 degrees, clear calm skies, and great conditions for frost advisories. frost advisories are through the east bay until 9:00 and freeze warnings through 9:00 this morning. we'll see temperatures turn around and it will be a gradual warmup. upper 50s lower 60s, pleasant afternoon in store. 61 in danville as well as pleasantville and as we check in with san bruno 59 in the city, san mateo upper 50s and 60s for the coast, winds will be light, sunny skies overhead.
