we'll be in the 50s. upper 50s is about as good as it will get. here is sal. >> right now traffic is moving along relatively well. we are looking at a live picture from news chopper two. and you can see that it looks like things are beginning to get back to normal. i see cars on some of the streets again. and the embarcadero you can see cars are driving on the embarcadero getting out to the bay bridge. this is a look at interstate 880 north and southbound that looks good. let's go back to the desk. we are continuing to follow our breaking news this morning. the long anticipated raid on the occupy san francisco camp. police in riot gear have made dozens of arrests. we begin our live team coverage with ktvu paul chambers who is at the foot of market street. >> reporter: good morning, pam. this place is different than it was a few hours allege. it took police about 3.5 hours but they basically raided

occupy san francisco. there is people there cleaning the area. this is the department of works. there is a fraction of police officers that were out here an hour ago. this place looks totally different. we can take a look at video here. just before 2:00 this morning. that is when police went in and raided occupy san francisco. protestors say they were given five minutes to get all their items or else. and that's when police decided to go in. knock down tents and raided the area. one man we spoke to said he was injured by police. >> they grabbed me by the back of my neck and one officer forced my face down on the pavement. another said keep talking trash keep talking trash. now you are not talking trash are you? they rubbed my face into the pavement and lifted me up and banged me on the side of my face. >> reporter: now you are looking at his face right now and the injuries he has. he was also not arrested.

shortly thereafter people from occupy took to the middle of market street. that is when they had a confrontation with police. police told them to leave the area. when they did not leave the area they were taken into custody. we can come back out here live. you can see there are clay pots. you can see some point people from occupy threw on the window here. they took the clay pots and furniture from the area and drug it out into the street and threw it out and basically antagonized police officers and that is when things erupted once again. as you can see it's all clear here. police officers standing guard on the encampment as department of public works are working and cleaning the inside. of course we will stay on top of this and bring you the latest. i will tell you there was 12 people taken into custody for not complying with police. there was no major problems but two people resisted arrest and quickly complied with the officers. live in san francisco i'm paul chambers ktvu channel 2 news.

6:03. san francisco's police chief is telling us why the police moved in on the occupy sf encampment. alex savidge is here with that part of the story. and also with what is happening now. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, to you dave. we got the number and a number of arrests have gone up. they arrested 70 occupy sf protestors. here's the scene behind us. from our advantage point of justin herman plaza as crews put the finishing touches on the plaza. police moved in around 1:00 this morning. this is some of the cleanup as crews cleaned up items and debris. police say they came here about 1:00 this morning. they gave protestors a warning over the loud spiker and -- speaker and began to take people into custody. the police chief tells us this has become a public health and safety issue. he says negotiations between

the city and occupy sf representatives had broken down in recent days. but we just talked with a representative. one of the protestors that says that is not the case. >> this is unnecessary and i'm very concerned because i think it's going to be it's going to escalate in situation and cite people to do things. this will not make it work. what needs to work is both sides sit down and 100 commit -- 100% committed. >> reporter: some of the protestors have made their way back here to the plaza. police officers are standing guard around this area as public works crews finish up the cleanup job here. we have been told by the chief of police and bring representatives from san francisco police that the plaza should be open fairly shortly. you can see a fair number of police officers standing guard to make sure protestors don't make their way back into the

right into the quiet tasahara creek neighborhood. where children were returning home from school. amazingly no one was hurt. last night the sheriffs office spoke with the discovery channel that airs myth busters. >> they are very sorry this occurred. they have safety measures that are in place. they did have a misfire. and they are going to -- they have insurance for these kinds of things. >> the cannon ball blasted through a front door, then a bedroom where a man, woman, and toddler were sleeping. the cannon ball finally came to rest inside a mini van. the owner told him they had just gotten out of their car. this morning a bay area state lawmakers will face charges. she's accused of stealing $2500 in merchandise from niemann marcus in san francisco in october. the democrat said she was talking on her cell phone and mistakenly walked out of the

store with the item. hayshi is not required to be at this mornings hearing. barry bonds will be sentenced december 16th. they want a federal judge to sentence bonds to home confinement. citing barry bonds' charity work and should not be punished more than other athletes. by the end of the week prosecutors will present their sentencing recommendations. barry bonds could be sentenced to a year or more behind bars. stockton police are trying to identify the boatbody that was in -- body that was in an apartment. forensic experts have yet to determine a gender, race, or age. police are not searching for the 26-year-old tenant. he was in the process of being evicted when the body was found. time now 6:08. later today the food and drug

administration will decide whether to make it easier for teenagers to get the morning after pill. we will bring you a live report from the washington, d.c. newsroom why supporters say requiring a prescription for it defeats the whole purpose. today is the first spare the air alert of the winter season. that means anyone caught burning wood or pellets could face a fine up to $400. air quality managers say the cold air could trap the smoke particles near the ground. thousands of people in southern california are still without power after last weeks wind storm. almost 100 miles an hour winds knocked down trees and power lines across several counties. utility crews have been work for days to restore the power. they still don't know how long it will take. cleanup crews they expect the costs are estimated to be almost $4 million. time now 6:09.

we have sal working hard early. how is the east shore? >> the east shore is crowded nowadays dave and pam. it's very crowded coming out to the mccarthur maze and bay bridge toll plaza that is getting a little bit of a crowd now. they will switch the metering lights soon if they haven't already. all of a sudden you will see a bigger crowd lining up. the freeways are open in san francisco and the occupy raid did not have any effect on freeway traffic. this mornings commute on the livermore valley westbound 580 looks pretty good. no major problems getting over to castro valley. let's go to steve. >> thank you very much. and it's cold out there. lots cold. i tweeted upper 20s and 30s out there. some of you are cig where is the rain? where is the rain? i know many concerned about that. we need snow in the hill. knock for awhile here 37 i will get more on that in a second. a cold morning. that is already there.

mostly sunny. more the same tomorrow. quiet pattern as we go into the weekend. maybe warmer lows as we get partly cloudy skies. there is a little north wind up at santa rosa and napa. that puts their windchill add 26-- at 26. the pattern continues to be very quiet and dry. there is nothing forecasted for this week. maybe next week on the 14th but i think it will stay to the east of us. don't be surprised if rain doesn't show up until a couple days before christmas. it would make sense. dry pattern called a blocking pattern. they last about three weeks. lows drop into nevada, southern california, and eject off to the east. another one comes in. we get the wind but we don't get any rain. usually again they last about three weeks. everything in the upper atmosphere is stuck. 30s and 40s. oakland at 40 degrees. san rafael 34. observer dave at 32. fairfield was 28. now they are 30. there there is 20s out there.

having to talk to a pharmacist reduces the chances it has to work. right now it's only available without a prescription to women 17 and older. younger teens still need a prescription. critics say it's unappropriate to have the drug on store shelves next to other overthe counter medicines. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:17. republicans in congress now working on their own plan to pay for extending the payroll tax cut. house republicans say they will propose agregeall increase in -- gradual increase in medicare services. to help pay for payroll tax cuts and benefits for the long term unemployed. democrats well they want to pay for the tax cut by raising income taxes on millionaires. republicans voted against that.

republican presidential candidate mitt romney is the datest candidate that said he will not take part in a debate mod rated by donald trump. romney said he called trump personally and said he would not be able to make it. so far only newt gingrich and rick santorum said they will attend. rick perry and michelle bachmann have not said if they will attend. rob blagojevich will try to convince a judge not do give him a long prison sentence. a judge will announce how long blagojevich has to spend behind bars for 18 corruption counts. including an attempt to sell off president obama's old senate seat. blagojevich could receive up to a 20 year sentence. today a judge will hear testimony whether va tech will be fined for a shooting rampage

on campus. they fined the school $55,000 for not notifying students faster about the threat. the university waited more than two hours after two students were killed in their dorm before sending an e-mail alerting students. the gunmen eventually chained a building killing 30 people and then skilling himself. penn university plans to give more money to child abuse charities. last week the school promised to donate $1.5 million to raise awareness about child abuse. now the university is pledging $500,000 more. penn state decided to donate the money following the molestation allegations against jerry sandusky. back to sal to check on the morning commute. >> we are looking at news chopper two. making sure everything is still okay here at justin herman plaza. the cleanup continues. it looks like most of the

it is tuesday morning i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. time now is 6:30. we have breaking news for you. we have starting with that long anticipated raid by police on the occupy san francisco camp it happened a couple hours ago. police in riot gear moved in. they have made dozens of arrests. things are starting to calm down. we have ktvu paul chambers right in the middle of everything. what is happening now? >> reporter: this is a total different place than it was an hour and a half ago when this place was lined with police. there is still a presence of police and occupiers. and we can swing over to the right there. you can see there is department of public works people cleaning justin herman plaza. it looks totally different. hoppestly i forgot what it looked like when there was so many tent there is. we can take a look at video here. police went in and raided

occupy san francisco. protestors said they were given five minutes to get all their items. that's when police came in and knocked down tents and raided the area. we spoke to one gentleman that said he was there. >> i grabbed -- i yelled out and said here come the riot cops i grabbed my bag and walked across the street. >> reporter: there was another standoff between police officers and occupy. police told them to leave the area. they did not. police told them to get in the middle of the street. that's when they were arrested and taken into custody. they were taken into custody. we are still trying to figure out if they were arrested at this time. now we also talk to one gentleman that said he was injured by police. he was not taken into custody. we can come back out here live. now out here you can see there is department of public works working. out here in this area is where

the problem happened. they took some planners. they took some furniture and brought it out in the middle of the street. that's when they confronted police out here. that has all been cleaned upright now. there are no major problems. no issues going on at this time. once again we were told there were about 70 arrests in all and of course police are still working on a situation. you also may remember last wednesday we were here i was here. as a deadline came when the city told them they could move to the mission street location or else. well, they didn't do that. once again occupy san francisco has been raided and working to clean up the area right now. we will of course stay on top of this and bring you as it develops. live in san francisco i'm paul chambers ktvu channel 2 news. the area that required the most cleanup was at justin herman plaza. that is where alex savidge joins us live with an update. alex. >> reporter: again a total of 70 people arrested this morning. two of the people according to the chief of police arrested

for assaulting officers throwing metal chairs at those officers as they moved in on the encampment this morning. overall the chief says things were peaceful. we will give you a lock at justin herman plaza. it's almost cleared out. the 100 or so tents that had been set up here are gone after this overnight raid. san francisco police in riot gear moved in just after 1:00 this morning. officers say they gave a warning over a loud speaker and shortly after that they started taking people into custody. the chief of police tells us negotiations fell apart between the city and occupy sf protestors. encampment was becoming a health and safety problem. occupy sf protestors we talked to this morning say this action was not the right move and it could spark a backlash. >> we facilitate any lawful demonstration for sure. and so it's the overnight lodging that becomes safety hazard and a public health

hazard. and certainly the people in this neighborhood deserve some relief. this has been going on for a long time. now they will have it. >> i think it's unnecessary. i think the way it could be handled could have been much more diplomatic. >> and here's a live look at justin herman plaza this morning. you can see some of the occupy sf protestors that were pushed out overnight have made their way back to the plaza area. police are guarding the plaza as public works crews finish up their cleanup job out here. again some back story. the city did offer occupy sf a spot. a new sight in the mission to set up an encampment there. now as you can clearly see this encampment at justin herman plaza oregon -- at justin herman plaza is gone. alex savidge. >> stay with us here at ktvu

and ktvu.com online for continuing coverage of the occupy san francisco raid. we will go back out to alex and paul coming up at 7:00. the chp busy investigating a fatal overnight accident on interstate 580. this happened just before 2:30 at first street this morning. police say a truck ran into an overcrossing railing. that driver was killed. the crash is being investigated but the crash scene has been cleared now. no traffic problems are being reported. bart says its central contra costa county cross over project is ten months behind schedule because of metal thefts. bart revealed two significant thefts in december 2010 set that project back. that is according to the chronical. the cross over project will allow trains to cross tracks in walnut creek and that is supposed to speed up the entire system. bart says copper shifts are on the rise with tracks raided at

least three times in the past week. time now 6:36. a second person is in custody in connection with that purse heist and pepper sprains accident at -- pepper spray incident at nordstroms. a 59-year-old man was arrested after he was trying to return a rental car. the suspect is among three people that tried to run out of the nordstroms with $10,000 worth of purses over the weekend. one man tried to stop him but he was allegedly pepper sprayed by the suspects. a female accomplice is still being sought by police. later this morning we are expected to hear from the parents of a toddler that was shot in the head in west oakland. they are going to give an update on one-year-old hiram lawrence's condition during a press conference outside of children's hospital. little hiram was one of seven people wounded on a shooting on november 28th. that incident was caught on surveillance video. oakland police did question some people late last week.

crime stoppers is offering a $35,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooters. the girlfriend of the man suspected of mowing down a firefighter is scheduled for arraignment today. 22-year-old elisa tejda faces an accessory charge. now witnesses say the two had been in a fight earlier at the nearby jack in the box. police recently found the suv that they believe was involved in the hit and run. investigators accuse the girlfriend of trying to cover up the crime. 6:38. san francisco muni investigating an unusual rise in cell phone thefts. there have been four robberies on muni trains and buses yet this week. in the most serious incident a woman stabbed a 65-year-old man after he allowed her to use his

cell phone. police are still searching for that suspect. despite this weeks theft crime on muni is down by 7% compared to last year. it sounds like muni not effected right now by the occupy sf raid but let's check in with sal. >> funny you should ask that question. we were just getting reports that the police are just letting the muni supervisor there on the scene know they can indeed run their trains through that area of justin herman plaza. there is a big muni car turn around there. it sounds like everything is being opened. we just heard from our reporters on the scene that things are as normal down there. expect for a small group of people. we'll hear from them in a little while. let's take a look at the bay bridge. we do have a backup there that is i don't know about 10-15 minutes. nothing out of the ordinary.

237 westbound stop and go traffic. crossing 880 there are no major problems there if you are driving on to the 880 freeway southbound to milpitas you will see slow traffic there as well. this is a look at northbound 280 traffic is moving along pretty well. moving pretty well all the way up into the valley. 6:39. by the way there goes cal train. that is just for steve. i appreciate when you do that, sal. i nowhere this is. this is across from cover i have cove. cold out there. let's face it temperatures just really cold out. a lot of 20s and 30s. there is a little system that is floating around up here. it will produce a few high clouds. the pattern is just so quiet. people are now saying what is the deal? some dry stretches here or weeks and weeks and then we need rain. not next week. i think the pattern is next week where we will see wind again. there is another system digging

in around the sierra. don't be surprised if rain doesn't show up around the 21st or 22nd. i've seen hints of that. but that is out about 15 days. until then i think things look really quiet. it's a dry pattern. it's called a blocking pattern. lows block in the sierra, nevada. but they usually last about three weeks. we are about a week and a half into this. don't be surprised if this extends into next week. there is a little bit of a model discrepancy. 30s for temperatures. 31 santa rosa. the north wind at five miles an hour means the windchill is 26. even oakland at 40 degrees. 20s kenwood. petaluma at 29. there is nothing going on. everything is just blocked as i just explained. expect for a little low dropping in giving us with a few high clouds. mostly sunny out there.

we are starting there in the santa clara valley. as you mentioned 237 stop and go driving into the valley. a lot of stop and go traffic continuing. so we are off to an early it's not that early it's dark. we have a lot of stop and go traffic. interstate 880 a little farther up still looks good right here in front of the oracle arena there. if you are driving this morning to the bay bridge toll plaza, it's a 10-15 minute wait there. 6:50 let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. we have mostly clear skies. a cold morning. 20s and 30s and the days will be very mild. the pattern is stuck. in a week and a half maybe things will break down. until then not much of a change. no change tomorrow. the weekend looks like a quiet pattern. maybe warmer lows as we get partly cloudy skies in here. a little system up to the

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. i want to take you back to san francisco live this morning with today's big story. this is downtown san francisco where you can see things calming down. just hours ago the police officers there in riot gear moved in and cleared out the occupy san francisco camp at justin herman plaza. you can see there it used to be filled with tents. we are in contact with the police department. we are told there have been at least 70 arrests.

stay with us here at ktvu for complete team coverage. our time now 6:55. san francisco is ordering a 24 hour fast food restaurant to close its doors at 2:00 a.m.. it's a jack in the box in the richmond district. neighbors say it atracks unruly crowds. police say a fight that started inside the restaurant thanksgiving day morning ended with the victim being intentionally run down by a car. the city wants its restaurant to close earlier before the owner applies for and receives a proper permit. however jack in the box officials say the restaurant has been working to improve security there. they have added security guards and installing better lighting. a new advertisement campaign by mcdonalds is raising a lot of eyebrows in chicago. the city's now billboard features a giant box of french fries with golden lights coming from it. it's part of the restaurants best fries on the planet campaign. but some people say it looks
