>> reporter: it took more than three hours but san francisco police raided the encampment at occupy sf. >> reporter: a major cleanup job underway here. what people who live in the area think about the action that was taken. seven people, gunned down. we lead that the oakland shootout -- we learned that the oakland shootout led to another one. and a cannonball crashes into a quiet neighborhood. >> i'm tori campbell. it's wednesday, december 7th. oping tower news -- topping our news -- it's finally happened. early this morning, san francisco police moved in on the occupy sf camp. we have team coverage. we begin with paul chambers at the foot of market street. what's happening there, paul? >> reporter: the cleanup is beginning here behind me. this woman is cleaning up this area. this is one of the places where occupy san francisco was. they basically took care of business -- you can see right here, she's cleaning up. as you can see -- now, this all happened just before 2:00 this morning. police went in and raided occupy san francisco. protesters say they were given five minutes to get all of their i tell. the or else was -- items or

else. >> as i was trying to leave, they would not let me leave. as i tried to leave, they zip tied me, put me in a bus with a bunch of other people and shipped me off to the jail. >> reporter: there was also a confrontation showdown with police and occupiers. at that time, police had to arrest 12or 13 people who they asked to evacuate from the area. they did not do so. so they were taken into custody. you can see the cleanup is happening out here. you can see these clay pots. the clay pots were taken out by occupy sf, thrown in the middle of the street of market. they also took out some furniture that you can see is not in the area right knew. they took that out -- rate now -- light now. they took that out. and -- right now. they took that out. we had to tell the owner of this place where his furniture is. it's on the other side of the encampment at justin herman plaza. i also found out that the

emergency assembly by occupy will hold two meetings today. one at noon, one at 6:00 at the ferry building. we also put in a call to the mayor's to see about the mission -- mayor's office to see about the mission street, if that is still offered. that's what's going on on this side. alex savidge has more. >> reporter: we're watching the public works crews from the city of san francisco finishing up the cleanup. if you take a live look beyond us. you can see a number of the obpie protesters have made their way back here to the plaza and they are essentially pushing up to a line of police officers who are guarding those public works crews as they obviously spray down the sidewalks here at the plaza and finish the cleanup job that they're trying to do. the plaza here, you can see,

the 100-plus tents that had been here for months are now gone after this early-morning police raid. officers in riot gear moved in just after 1:00. they first issued a warning over a loudspeaker and then began taking people into custody. seven protesters were arrested. we saw work crews loading items onto dump trucks. the chief said this had become a health and safety hazard. and people who live nearby say they are happy to see the occupy sf tents are gone. >> personally, i'm pleased. this is the freedom of these people and things like this, but i think this is much better. >> reporter: and the chief of police told us this morning that essentially negotiations between the city and occupy sf representatives had broken down in recent days and that's why this action was taken this morning. but straiters we talked to --

demonstrators say we talked to say it was not necessary. the park will be closed for renovation for a short time. for the time being, police are standing by here, no one is being allowed onto justin herman plaza. they are allowed onto the walkway. police tell us the plaza will reopen late other p this morning -- later on this morning. we're live in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. we've asked the viewers on facebook whether they think police should have cleared out the occupy carm. mary wrote "unfortunately, it was overdue. their mission can be discussed without the need to occupy any space." yvonne wrote," good job sfpd."

we want to hear what you have to say and we'll share some of your comments in the 8:00 hour on "mornings on 2". across the bay in oakland, security guards are keeping an eye on frank ogawa plaza. occupy oakland still holds general assembly meetings at the plaza, even after after it was cleaned up -- even after it was cleaned up. the city has hired a security firm to make sure they don't move back in. demand for extra security has been less than what the city expected. as a result, the city is no longer seeking extra funding for private patrols. we have new details about last month's mass shooting in oakland. seven people were wounded, including a 1-year-old toddler who is now on life support after being shot in the head. today's "chronicle" reports one of the suspects unwittingly crossed paths with the children's family at children's hospital just two days after

the shooting. the 1-year-old boy's family reportedly beat up the suspect at the hospital. later we expect to hear from the parents of a 1-year- old boy wounded in the head. the family will give us an update on him during a news conference outside children's hospital. he was in his father's arms when several shots were fired outside a west oakland liquor store. oakland police did question some people last week but no arrests have been made. crimestoppers is offering a $35,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and convictions of the shooters. 7:07. police are now trying to identify a body found in an apartment in stockton. it was there for about four months. the body was found on monday in the downtown area. forensic experts have yet to determine the gender, race or the age of the remains. police are still searching for the 26-year-old tenant. he was in the process of being evicted when that body was

found. also, new figures are out, showing the homicide rate in the state of california dropped 7.8% between 2009 and 2012 -- 2010. the annual department of justice report also shows the -- the percentage of homicides that have been solved. 6.8%. that's the highest since 2001. over all this report is showing violent crime went down in california by 22% between 2001 and 2012 -- 2010. 7:08. we want to check in with sal. how is the toll plaza looking, sal? >> well, it looks pretty good. as a matter of fact, if you are trying to get into san francisco for this time of the morning, i would say it's uneventful. that's what you want. you don't want any surprises on getting into the city. the toll plaza backed up for about 15 to 20-minute wait which is very normal for this time of the morning. i know everyone has their routines. if you are driving in the carpool lane it will be less if you have three or more people

in your car. this morning's commute will be okay on northbound 101 in san francisco approaching the 80 split. the occupy protest did not have any effect on traffic in san francisco -- i should say the raid, the police action, whatever you want to call it did not affect traffic coming into san francisco. this morning's drive on the san mateo bridge, there is a minor accident, westbound 92. that's also not affecting traffic. however, southbound 8 0 near tennyson there is a crash on the -- the highway. let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. beautiful sunrise. it's cold out there. just heard from dirk in vallejo. he said i'm freezing. a lot of 30s there. all around there, pinole, 37. there's even a few 20s.

we have -- the days are nice. it's december and we need rain. we need a lot of snow in the mountains. it's bone-dry. no rain this week, next week there's a hint. one forecast model is going to try to bring one in and then the following week, wouldn't you know it, right before christmas, i think we'll get some rain. these systems drop in, they are called inside sliders. they come in through the sierra and then develop in southern california and then they eject out and then things calm down and then they kick up the wind machine. that's all we get. it's called a blocking pattern because they last about three weeks. everything above the atmosphere -- it can go across the entire globe and you will find high pressure, low pressure. and until that breaks down that's what we have. there's your trifecta, 30. 34 san rafael, same for redwood city, livermore is at 32.

20s, 30s today. thousands of people in southern california are still without power after last week's wind storm. almost 100-mile-per-hour winds knocked down trees and power lines across several counties. utility crews have been working for days to restore brower but they don't know how long it will take to return power to about 6500 customers still? the dark -- still in the dark. cleanup costs are estimated to be about $4 million. and a pasadena man got arrested after his power outage. he's accused of making angry threatening phone calls to a

hotline for affected residents. the man says he showed up at the city manager's office to file a complaint. that's when police say he was arrested after threatening to get a gun and shoot everyone. >> i don't own a gun, don't know how to shoot a gun, never had a gun in my life. >> he was released on bail. he once sat on california's energy commission appointed -- apointed by governor brown. more movement toward as new stadium for the 49ers in santa clara. last my the santa clara city council discussed a proposed stadium right next to the great america amusement park. $850million in loans have been secured. other financing will come from the nfl, the 9ers and from the sale of naming rights. the price tag is now top $1 billion. they hope to open the stadium by 2015. however, the city of san francisco is not giving up yet on trying to keep the team.

city leaders have been working on their own plans quietly. mayor ed lee is due to meet tomorrow with 9ers owner, jed york, for what could be one more attempt to convince the team to stay. the food and drug administration may tee side to today -- decide today to make it easier for teenagers to get the morning-after pill. alison burns is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom. >> reporter: the morning-after pill, called plan-b, is most effective if it's taken within 24 hours of unprotected test. so the drug's maker and public health experts say any barrier for getting it, like waiting for a prescription or having to talk to a pharmacist reduces the chance it has to work.

they want the fda to eliminate the age restriction. right now it's only available to teens 17 and older. critics say it's totally inappropriate to have this drug on the shelf next to other medicines, like cough medicineses and antacid -- antacids. there's a pill called blowfish. it's for hangover. it's made up of caffeine with a maximum strength painkiller. once dissolved in water, it claims to get over -- get rid

of hangover symptoms. republicans and congress now working on their own plan to pay for the text ending the -- extending the payroll tax. democrats they want to increase income taxes on millionaires. however, republicans voted against that. republican presidential candidate, mitt romney is the latest candidate to say he will not take part in the debate moderated by donald trump p later this month. he said he called trump personally and said he cannot make it. he joins jon huntsman and ron paul is in declining. although they say the reality star is making a spectacle out of the process.

only newt gingrich and rick santorum said they will take part in the debate. rick perry and michele bachmann said they haven't decided. a wild stunt staged by a popular tv show nearly turned into a strategy in the east bay of dublin. they fired a cannon from the range. but then the stunt went terribly wrong. the cannonball apparently hit something that caused it to go over the hillside that protects the area below and flew hundreds of yards into a neighborhood where children were returning home from school at 4:15 in the afternoon. the cannonball hit a home and a minivan. fortunately no one was hurt. tara moriarty is getting reaction from both sheriff deputies and neighbors and she will join us live at 7:30. this morning former illinois governor, rog blagojevich, will try to convince a judge not to give

him a long prison sentence. he will address the judge when his sentencing resumes this morning. the judge will then allow how long blagojevich must spend behind bars for 18 corruption accounts, including his attempt to auction off president obama's old senate seat. blagojevich could receive up to a 20-year sentence. 7:19. an administrative judge will hear testimony on weather virginia tech university should be fined from that -- for that 2007 shooting rampage on its campus. the education department fined the university $55,000 for not notifying students faster about the threat. the university waited more than two hours after two students were killed in their dorm before sending out an e-mail warning other students. the shooter eventually chained a billing and killed 34 people before killing himself. penn state plans to raise

more money for child abuse donations. last month they said they were gonna raise $1 million for child abuse and now they say an extra $500,000 will be donated for that. they decided to donate the money after the allegations against retired coach, jerry sandusky. it's another chilly day in the bay area. steve paulson is up next to tell fuss it will warm up any -- tell us if it will warm up any time soon. 8x

what's causing fires in their vehicles. government engineers reportedly said the coolant system leaks after a crash. one report says it could should be fairly simple to fix the problem and prevent the leaks. that report also says the cost will be about $1,000 per car unless the government demands a complete restructuring of the battery holder. 7:23. two hours from now, a ribbon cutting is scheduled for the first phase in the vasco road safety improvement project. construction in eastern contra costa county began in may 2010 and should be completed by the end of the year. a one-mile section of the road near livermore was widened to accommodate installation of a solid concrete median. the project covers an area in contra costa county just north of the alameda county line. there have been a lot of head- on accidents. in fact, there have been 16 deaths on that stretch of road

between 2000 and 2010. a lot of people have been asking for this and this is a big deal. >> sure. 7:24. let's check in with sal. you've been busy this morning. how is 280? >> it's not great. some slow traffic. i'm always reminded when i see this kind of stuff, at the very least, if it's crowded and a lot of people are going to work, that's exactly what we want, correct? but we perhaps want people to go more evenly or perhaps take transit because this freeway is not doing well all the way into cupertino. let's take a look at the maps now. you will see this red area. we were just showing you -- you can see 280 is the slowest freeway. now 85 is not that bad. you might want to consider that as your alternative right now. and i'm sure it will get busy later. the bay bridge toll plaza is backed up out to the macarthur maze and the metering lights are on.

with the occupy sf enrampment cleared out, it's getting a good scrubbing this morning. alex savidge joins us live with a look at what's happening. >> reporter: good morning. a major cleanup job is underway. you talk about a good scrubbing. that's what's taking place. you can see some of these crews from the department of public works. they are spraying down the sidewalks. we've been watching them do this for the last couple of hours as part of this cleanup. meanwhile, police are standing guard keeping protesters back. earlier this morning, officers in riot gear moved in around 1:00 this morning, 70 protesters ended up being arrested. two of them arrested for assaulting police officers, throwing metal chairs at them, according to police. the 100-plus tents that had been here were then taken down. we watched crews early this morning, loading furniture,

clothing and other items into dump trucks and taking those items away. the chief says people will be able to get their personal belongings back. but one occupy protester just told me he watched his stuff getting trashed. >> my jacket and all of that, i had my bag. i had two sleeping bags. i had my rei tent. i had everything and they just sat there and crushed it. they did not care about myself. >> it looks like hurricane katrina blew through there. if you look at it from up above. but they will be conscientious and thoughtful and separate the trash from the belongings. >> reporter: the police chief said there was a breakdown in the negotiations that had been ongoing between occupy sf protesters and the city and that's why the action was taken this morning. protesters say the city was negotiating with the wrong people and as you can see, live this morning, protesters have made their way, a small group of them have made their way to

will have a live update at 8:00 a.m. a stunt changed by a television show turned into a very close call in the east bay. tara moriarty is live in dublin where a myth buster's experiment went terribly wrong. what happened, tara? >> reporter: well, that's right. take a look at the damage created by a cannonball. this is where it hirst hit -- first hit, the cement here and the show mythbusters was doing some sort of an experiment over at the alameda county sheriff's department range. if you see the hill, that's how far away it was. the cannonball missed the intended target, tore through the cinderblock wall and then it went on a path of destruction. the cannonball soared 700 yards into a residential neighborhood and bounced off a home and chipped the cement driveway.

it tore through the front door, raced through a flight of stairs, whipped through a bedroom where a man, woman and child were sleeping, crossed lanes of the road, smashed the roof of a house and finally lodged itself into a minivan on springfield drive. the show is based in san francisco. it's on the discovery channel. and the show uses stunts to dispute myths. what kind of experiment were they trying to do? >> a cannonball myth and they are basically testing different things that come back in -- a cannon that would have the same effects as a cannonball. >> i understand they've been suspended. you are gonna have to reeval

23-year-old anthony loza worked at andrew hill school in energy athletics. he's accused of arresting a minor associated with the groups. there's no evidence that he molested anyone at the two places where he coached. a bay area assemblywoman is accused of stealing $2500 in merchandise from knee man mar cut in san francisco -- neiman marcus in san francisco. she said she was talking on her cell phone and mistakenly walked out of the store with the items. she's not required to be at this morning's hearing. former giants' slugger barry bonds will be sentenced on december 16th. a jury back in april found him guilty of obstruction of justice in connection with the balco steroids investigation. his lawyers plan to file an appeal but have just asked him to be sentenced to home

confinement. they cite his charity work and say he -- and say he should not be punished. prosecutors are expected to present their sentencing recommendations by the end of the week. bonds could be sentenced to a year or more behind bars. 7:36. a second person now in custody in connection with a purse heist and pepper spray incident at the nordstroms in walnut creek, now, according to the "contra costa times" the 51- year-old man was arrested on monday as he was trying to return a rental car allegedly used in the heist. the suspect is among three people who tried to run out of the nordstroms with $10,000 worth of purses over the weekend. one man tried to stop him but was allegedly pepper sprayed. police are still out there searching for a female accomplice. san francisco police say crime on muni is down despite an unusual string of cell phone thefts. there have been four robberies on muni trains and buses just

this week. the dean of the haas business school sent a mass e- mail independenting -- independent kag -- indicating a student and suicide. the business school plans to appoint a safety council to review security measures and also student concerns. a ucsf study finds mixing marijuana and narcotics is safe

to treat chronic pain. it's the first study to look at the combined effects of the drugs. researchers study the 21 men and -- studied 21 men and women and found there were no negative side effects. he hopes further studies will help support the use of marijuana to treat chronic pain. clayton valley hool's appeal for a charter school will go before the contra costa board of education tonight. the mount diablo school board rejected their petition last month. however, county educators may approve the idea. they are expected to make a recommendation next month. the public, you are invited to tonight's hearing. it will be held at pleasanton elementary school on oak park boulevard. the meeting begins at 5:30. it is 7:39. an investigation is underway into an early-morning accident in san francisco. a car struck a pedestrian on

florintine street. the crash happened just before 6:00 this morning, about an hour and a half ago. the victim was taken to san francisco general hospital. theirs no word yet on the person's condition. also a fatal accident on interstate 580 in livermore overnight it also being investigated. this happened just before 2:30 a.m. at first street. officers say a truck ran into an overcrossing railing and the driver was killed. the crash scene has been cleared here. no traffic problems are being reported. let's get an update from sal and get you where you need to go. >> reporter: all right. good morning. we're doing pretty well in the bay area commute when it comes to unexpected things. we do have slow traffic to deal with. let's start out about 280 northbound. you can see traffic is pretty busy and now highway 85 is beginning to get slow from 87 through los gatos and saratoga. it was just a matter of time that people ream iced that --

it's doing is bringing higher clouds and that's it. it might have helped keep the lows you. it was colder yesterday morning. we had crystal clear skies. december's been a very dry month. we've had a lot of wind. we haven't had much in the way of rain. next week does not look promising, maybe the week afterwards. it's a pattern that's stuck. everything kind of has to rearrange itself. so far i don't see anything. a lot of upper 30s, a few 20s. there is the little guy. he's not doing much. jet stream stays way to the north. dives down to the middle of the country. really cold air all the way down into texas. temperatures cold not only here but many other places as well. for us, the cold start areas of frost. mostly sunny, light wind. but it's kind of a cool day.

early trading today as differences emerge between european officials struggling to craft a debt crisis deal ahead of this week's leadership summit. taking a live look at the big board. you can see the dow is down 64 at 12,085. the nasdaq down 31. s&p down 10. new this morning, mexico says one of moammar gadhafi's sons tried to sneak into their country. mexican authorities held a news conference revealing that intelligence agents broke up a plot to smuggle the sun and his family into mexico under false names. moammar gadhafi was killed in october after being overthrown by libyan reles. son is currently living under house arrest still in africa. afghan president hamid karzai is vow to confront pakistan's government over attacks on shiite warshippers in afghanistan. at least 60 people were killed. a sunni muslim group in

pakistan has claimed responsibility for the attack. president karzai says he believes the claim the u.s. embassy and kabul says one person is among the dead. today is the 70th anniversary of the japanese attack on pearl hare bore. the bomb -- harbor. more than 2400 americans died in that attack. 120 survivors are expected today at special ceremonies at the uss arizona memorial. now, locally, here in the bay area, there are three events to commemorate the anniversary. the first is on coast guard island in alameda the begins at 8:00 -- island. it begins at 8:00. another ceremony on the uss hornet and then this afternoon there is a special ceremony lighting the beacon on top of mount diablo. 7:47. well, people down on their luck

still busy cleaning up justin herman plaza after police raided the occupy,f encampment -- occupy sf encampment. what's the mayor saying out there? >> reporter: the mayor just e- mailed us a statement from ed lee, just a short while ago. essentially what he says as he supportings the movement of occupy sf, overnight camping here just could not be tolerated and that's why action was taken. as you can see, occupy sf is no more. justin herman plaza has been cleared out. work crews are scrubbing things down. as you look over here, you can see police are standing guard. there are some protesters who made their way back to the plaza. officers first moved in just after 1:00 this morning. protesters were warned to vacate the area and then shortly after that, arrests were made. 70 people were arrested.

two of them were arrested for assaulting police officers, we're told. police say two officers had metal chairs thrown at them. the chief of police said this raid happened because negotiations broke down between the city and occupiers. but one occupy protester said that's not true and he's angry about what happened. >> i think it's unnecessary. i think that the way this could have been handled do have been much more diplomatic and it could have tended to the concerns on both sides. we facilitate any lawful demonstration for sure. and so it's the overnight lodging that becomes a safety hazard and a public health hazard and certainly people in this neighborhood deserve some relief. this has been going on for some time. >> reporter: police say once the cleanup job is finished here, it will open back up to the public. we're also told by occupy sf

occupy san francisco. protesters say they were given five minutes to get all of their items. there were several confrontations -- excuse me, several disputes between officers and members of occupy. they got in the officers' faces after throwing furniture in the street and talking to police officers. police had to make a couple of arrests because they asked people to evacuate the area. when that did not happen, police decided to take people into custody. as we said, there was 70 people in all that was arrested. police wanted people to get out of occupy and raided the area. >> we don't have nothing. nowhere to go. i'm a little upset. just a little bit. >> reporter: now, here's a statement from the mayor -- in order to maintain public health, public safety and return the plaza to everyone's use, police peacefully and orderly ended the encampment. we continue people to continue their occupy protests and the city will continue to respect

is making a spectacle out of the nomination process. so far, only newt gingrich and rick santorum have said they would attend. thousands of southern california residents still have no electricity after last week's wind storm. 100-mile-per-hour winds knocked down trees like that one and power lines in several counties. utility crews have been working for days trying to get the power back on for more than 6,000 customers. they are not sure how long it's gonna take. cleanup costs are estimated to be about $4 million. a pasadena man's frustration over the power outages got him arrested. he's accused of making angry, threatening phone calls to a hotline for residents affected. mr. common says he showed up at the city manager's office to file a complaint. that's when police say he was arrested after threatening to get a gun and shoot everybody. >> don't own a gun, don't know

how to shoot a gun, don't -- never had a gun in my life. >> he was released on bail. at one time he was on california's energy commission appointed by governor jerry republican. it's 8:49. an administrative judge this morning has begun hearing testimony on whether virginia tech university should be fined for the 2007 shooting rampage on campus. the u.s. education department fined the school $55,000 for not notifying students faster about the threat. the university waited more than two hours after two students were killed in their dorm before sending an e-mail alerting others. the gunmen eventually chained the building and killed 30 more people and them himself. penn state university plans to donate more rain poise raised from its football bone to child abuse charities. last week, the school promised to denate $1.5 million.

now penn state says an extra $500,000 will be donated. penn state decided to donate the money following the molestation allegations against retired coach jerry sandusky. officials at uc berkeley say they believe an armed student on campus last month wanted to commit suicide by police. the dean sent out a mass e-mail yesterday indicating their investigation is almost complete. 32-year-old christopher travis was shot and killed after allegedly pulling out a gun in a computer lab. now, the e-mail didn't go into specifics but it states the suicide theory is based on his past and recent behavior. the business school plans to appoint a safety scandal -- council to review security measures. a ucsf study is finding that mixing marijuana and nationals like morphine -- and narcotics like morphine is safe for treating pain. this is the first study to look

it is 8:55. a second person is now in custody in connection with a purse heist and pepper spray incident at the nordstrom in walnut creek. according to the contra costa times, a 51-year-old man was arrested monday as he was trying to return a rental car that was allegedly used in the heist. the suspect is among three people who police say tried to run out of the nordstrom with $10,000 worth of purses over the weekend. a man tried a man tried to stop them but was allegedly pepper sprayed. crime on muni is down. there have been four robberies on muni trains and buses this week. police say in the most serious incident, a woman stabbed a 65- year-old man after he let her use his cell phone.
