you what justin herman plaza looks like right now. some speaking on the open microphone. we counted two tents that have gone up so far. police backed off, after setting up a perimeter here earlier. at around 8:45, things came to a head when there was a clash between protesters and officers. officers scuffled with several protesters. tackling some to the ground. tensions would raise from time to time during the past few hours. shortly after 6:00 tonight, protesters march from the federal reserve building to justin herman plaza. they tried to reoccupy the space police removed them from this morning. officers in riot gear moved in, surrounding the dozens of protesters who moved inside the perimeter. >> justin herman plaza is

closed for the public. >> reporter: protesters did not heed orders. one of the protesters who was detained appears to suffer from convulsions. >> the police officer removed couldn't believe around there that tight. >> reporter: this woman was arrested during this morning's raid. she was back tonight. >> i was a nurse in southern california. i lost my job two years ago, i've been on unemployment. >> i think that's a public space. that's for the people, not for people to just sleep and hang out. >> reporter: the protesters say they're determined that their message and movement don't end. about an hour ago, police backed off, and took down the perimeter. i spoke with a police spokesman several minutes ago.

he told me no one was arrested, their message is simple, that the park is closed for repairs. that is the latest from here reporting live in san francisco, amber lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. take a look at this. this was the scene early this morning, as the police moved in, and raided the occupy camp. they were joined by sheriff deputies, firefighters and public work crews. protesters were given just five minutes to clear out. the raid resulted in the arrests of nearly 80 campers and protesters. mayor ed lee says the protesters have cost the city $950,000. at least three more occupy protesters were arrested this afternoon. police say they were blocking traffic on lower market street. the three people were among the 50 people trying to disrupt operations. most of the protesters left

after the arrest. personal property confiscated from the encampment is being returned to protesters. the city hauled the items to an operations yard on caesar chavez street. the yard will be open to protesters tomorrow and friday. we are going to keep monitoring this situation in san francisco throughout the hour. as you can see right now, there are several tents there, as well as several dozen protesters. we'll check back with amber lee at 10:30. continuing coverage of the growing fraud case involving lucky supermarket shoppers. lucky said tonight, it's received more than 500 calls so far from concerned customers. ktvu's lloyd mcquesta is live with one victim's story. >> reporter: company officials are saying the tampered card readers along with 23 others in the bay area have all been replaced, but more people are

coming forward, saying the balance in their bank accounts is lower than they thought. >> monday, when i checked my bank account online, i noticed that $300 was withdrawn. >> reporter: she said it was made at a lucky's check out store in san jose. she learned others in her family also had unauthorrized withdrawals from their accounts. >> i contacted my father-in- law, and he had money withdrawn from his account as well. $500. >> reporter: lucky's said someone put sniffer devices in card readers to grab account information and person identification numbers. we talked to an expert at a computer security company. >> a sniffer is fundamentally really concerned about pulling information off a network or a require in some form, as

opposed to just the skimmer, which is a bolt onto the front, that you're trying to get that magnetic stripe. >> reporter: lucky admits finding the problem on november 11, but not disclosing it until november 23. that delay has some customers upset. >> now i don't feel safe using my debit card anywhere now really. >> reporter: the scope of this fraud is yet to be determined. a few years ago, there was a similar breach at lonardi's. the losses were put at $300,000. san francisco police are looking for a man they say scammed elderly women out of thousands of dollars. police released this sketch of the man who they say is impersonating a bank manager. he urges the women to hand over cash from the account, and then disappears. new video of a house fire

in san leandro that sent a woman to the hospital tonight. firefighters say a grease fire broke out in the kitchen. the woman tried to put out the fire herself. she was taken to the hospital suffers from smoke inhalation. alameda county firefighters were training nearby and were able to respond with quite a large force. the red cross is helping the family find a temporary place to stay. the girlfriend of a man who allegedly ran down a firefighter in san francisco on thanksgiving was in court today. prosecutorses say she tried to hide the rental car eduardo esquavel used. he is held on $5 million bail after being arrested back on november 29.

former san francisco crime lab technician, debra madden pleaded not guilty today to a federal charge of fraudulently obtaining cocaine. she allegedly stole small amounts of cocaine from the crime lab for personal use in 2009. it led to the closure of the lab and the dismissal of dozens of cases. a riot at folsom prison. at least 50 prisoners began rioting at 12:30 this afternoon. guards fired rifle rounds and used pepper spray and rubble bullets to stop the riot. some used the chaos to attack other prisoners with homemade knives. two guards suffered minor injuries. one prisoner remains in the hospital tonight. the wild half mile journey of a misfired cannonball that tore through a couple of home and a minivan took a new twist

prostitution in the city of berkely. officials say they're seeing an uptick in prostitution reports coming from berkely high school. heather, officials are scrambling to find ways to address this problem. >> reporter: certainly scrambling indeed. concerns over high school girls pacing these blocks here on san pablo avenue, is leading to action tonight. members of a city commission that drafted this resolution, taking a stand against prostitution, and once this resolution is completed, it will be handed over to the city council for consideration. it has long been the mecca of berkely prostitution. now comes word that some of the woman working san pablo avenue, are not women at all, but young girls, still in high school. >> it is a big issue for us. these are youth. these are young people. it's a sensitive, and tragic situation so we're very concerned about it. >> reporter: berkely police tonight comfirm they're receiving 1 to 2 referrals a

month from berkely high officials about suspected student prostitution. >> to collaborate with the school and to give a young woman possibly some support. >> one or two girls a month, that's a huge number. >> reporter: she yields the commission on the status of women. they gathered tonight to work on a resolution to combat the growing problem of human trafficking and sexual exploitation of minors. two months ago, berkely pd conducted a sting operation here, targeting prostitutes and their johns. in just three hours, made six arrests. >> we're hoping they will support us in the creation of a task force. >> reporter: that task force will be comprised of police in the hope of steering high school girls off this path and providing them with the services they need.

officials hope to have a final resolution in the hands of councilmembers. a third suspect in the deadly motorcycle gang riot in a nevada casino was extradited from california to reno today. he is believed to have started the fight inside the sparks casino. it ended in the death of san jose hells angels president, joseph pettigrew. a second will be arraigned in reno on friday. he's accused of firing the fatal to the. a hells angel's member is out on $300,000 bail. as the gop presidential hopefuls look toward iowa, newt gingrich is looking at a big lead. 33% say they are backing

what many consider a dangerous stretch of a rural contra costa freeway is safer tonight. it is complete after a year and a half of work. crews installed a concrete safety median to help prevent head on collisions. they also added a passing lane. it was originally designed to be a two lane country road, now it's a major artery. >> definitely a lot safer. it takes out the one-on-one factor a little bit. >> 16 people have died on the road since 2000.

federal stimulus funds paid for the $8.5 million project. new details tonight in the story of an oakland family fighting to keep their young son alive. 23-month-old hiram lawrence was shot while in the arms of his father. his mother is asking doctors for more time. >> reporter: here's a photo of hiram lawrence's first halloween, dressed as a doctor. today, the boy is surrounded by doctors at children's hospital in oakland. >> the doctor said he wasn't going to make it out of surgery. he made it out of surgery. now they're saying, he's still not going to make it. but he's showing progress. >> reporter: hiram was caught in a spray of bullets a week ago. surveillance video captured the chaotic moments at a west oakland liquor store park lot. the boy was in his father's arms when he was hit by a bullet to the head. hiram fights for his life, his family is fighting the clock. >> when they tell you it's time to take your baby, without

connection with the shooting. oakland police investigators interviewed him this afternoon, all six are being held on charges unrelated to the incident. a former black panther convicted of killing a police officer will be spared the death penalty. the philadelphia d.a. announced today, he would not pursue a death penalty sentence against him in part because he didn't think the prosecution would succeed, since witnesses are no longer available. he was convicted, and sentenced to death in 1992 for the shooting death of a police officer. an appeal's court ordered a new sentencing, after ruling that instructions given to jurors in the original trial could have been potentially misleading. he has long proclaimed he was framed. doctors at this san francisco hospital say two pets brought in this week might have been poisoned. the suspicious test results and

new at 10:00, san francisco police are investigating the possible poisoning of two family pets. jana spoke with the owners who said they had been home all day. with why doctors say the deaths are suspicious. >> reporter: the family brought their cat and their dog to this animal emergency hospital with seizures. hours later, both pets had died. one doctor says they did find possible traces of methadone in one of the bodies. the family says their two pets,

a male cat named cowboy and a female shepherd mix named dakota were in good health. at first their cats, then later their dog suddenly started having seizures and vomiting. >> she just went nuts. it was like the exorcist came in. she was just running frantically. >> reporter: the family took the pets to the animal hospital. a doctor treated them, but later that night, both animals died. a preliminary test on the dog was positive for methadone. >> a very unusual case. >> reporter: san francisco police say animal care and control officers are now investigating this as a possible poisoning. >> they're going to determine whether or not there was any type of foul play, and if there is a potential suspect that is out there, poisoning these animals. >> reporter: the family says both animals were home all afternoon and the family searched their house and yard for suspicious materials, or possible sources of poison, but

a security flaw this weekend unveiled private photos of facebook founder mark zuckerberg. the photos were marked as private, they did not reveal anything inappropriate. the company says the error was quickly fixed, but some people were able to view a limited number of other people's private photos. mcafee announced it was laying off employees. the santa clara company says the layoff of 3% of its force will come from worldwide

operations. making it unclear how many jobs will be lost here in the bay area. business analysts says the security software company remains profitable. the u.s. justice department is investigating apple, and five publishing companies over allegations of monopoly control of the e book industry. federal investigators european regulators are investigating how they're operating. in news of the world tonight, in china police arrested more than 6,000 suspects in a child trafficking ring and rescued 178 children. authorities say the suspects were part of two separate networks that sell children. china has a big child trafficking problem, in part to the strict one child policy. tens of thousands of children vanish every year in china.
