this is how it ended less than an hour ago. police from two cities convergedded on an east bay neighborhood to search for a suspect in a shooting that made national headlines. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. a search for the suspect in that black friday robbery at a walmart is now over. after a tense standoff with the s.w.a.t. team all morning the suspect

surrendered in an east oakland neighborhood in the last hour much we're live from the scene with more. >> reporter: one hour ago san leandro police negotiators got on the bullhorn and asked the suspect to come out with his hands up. he complied. there is a couple police cars still milling in front. they did a weapons sweep to make sure there were no guns inside of the home. police say they have the out come they desired, a peaceful surrender. here is a look at the suspect. he is a 29-year-old man. san leandro police believe he is the man who pulled the trigger in the black friday shooting outside a san leandro walmart november 25. earlier this morning just after 7:00, police evacuated five people and a baby from the house here off 106th avenue and foothill boulevard. police received a tip from someone who had been inside the home and recognized watson as the shooter. watson was reportedly hiding in the attic for four hours.

s.w.a.t. teams weren't sure if he was armed. we spoke to his sister. she was concerned that her brother would not get out of house alive. >> this stuff was crazy. i ain't never in my life woke up to no ar-1500 round guns, clips, none of that. helicopter, dogs barking. my brother ain't had a chance to tell his side of the story. he is not the person you all think he is. he is not. he is not a criminal. he is not a killer. he is none of that. my brother is a real person and he loves people. we gonna show him love. i don't care what they give him. >> reporter: investigators say watson and two others tried to steal a stereo and other electronics from a man who shopped at a black friday sale in san leandro. officials say around 2:00 a.m. wawtd son and two other men drove up to the shopper and his cousins in the parking lot demanding he turn over the goods. when the man refused, police say watson shot him. the victim's cousins wrestled

phillips to the ground and held him until police arrived. watson will face charges of robbery and attempted homicide. back to you. >> thank you. tensions are high at this hour on the virginia tech campus where authorities are searching for a gunman who killed two people including a police officer today. officials say the officer was killed after making a routine traffic stop. the suspect shot the police officer and then ran on to campus. the other victim was found in a parking lot. the campus is on lockdown. students and faculty are being told to stay inside and lock their doors. you may remember in 2007, 33 people died in a shooting rampage at virginia tech. this morning a multiagency law enforcement sweep is underway in the south bay targeting gang violence. 20 people were pittsburghed up

this morning after a 7-month covert criminal investigation. gilroy police and state and federal authorities are going after 25 members of a criminal street gang. the charges against them include assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, and witness intimidation. san jose's police union ten actively agreed to extend 10% pay cuts. they were imposed to reduce the city's budget deficit and were set to expire in june. police officers have to vote on the agreement. the city council has to approve it. the pay cuts are expected to prevent police lay offs next year. grief has spread across the campus of oakland technical high school today after the sudden death of a recent graduate. >> you had that personality. whenever you see him, he would all the make you smile. he was always there for you. >> that oakland tech senior is mourning the loss of his

friend, 19-year-old fred thompson was a freshman football player at oregon state university. he was playing a pickup basketball game last night when he collapsed and died. he died of an apparent heart attack. an oakland tech grief counselors are helping students and staff cope with the loss. >> i think my fondest memory of fred is definitely when he walks in and with that signature smile. >> it's a shame that we lost him at such a young age. >> fred thompson would have celebrated his 20th birthday this sunday. doctors may decide today whether to remove a toddler from life support who was shot in the head last week. however, oakland police fear the child's death could set off a gang war in two of the city's poorest housing complexes. one-year-old baby was one of seven people shot during the filming of a rap video.

police have determined the shooting was the result of a a feud between rival gang members from the acorn and campbell village in west oakland. investigators say they took four persons of interest into custody last week after a raid at acorn. in san francisco, the there remains a strong police presence at justin herman plays all of the some determined occupy protesters tried to put up more tents. police wasted no time moving in and clearing them out. >> a small group of protesters remained at justin herman plaza overnight. one tried to set up a ten at 2:00 a.m. he backed down. >> when they had surrounded the tent and had their batons out, i dropped it. i'm not gonna risk going to jail over a tent. i'll let them have it. >> one more attempt came at 5:30 a.m. and got a a quick response from police. >> i said, he knows no tens are

officer used pepper spray to subdue the child. the department claimed the pepper spray was necessary because the boy was out of control. the family argued he was treated like a criminal. the social network giant facebook is moving to menlo park soon. that means thousands of new jobs. it also means major traffic issues for the area. we're live near the company's new home with information. >> reporter: the new facebook campus is at this busy intersection on willow road and bay front expressway. the people we talked with like the idea of thousands of new jobs out here, but they might have to change their status update when they get stuck in a traffic mess with thousands of new commuters. getting to and from work isn't usually the highlight of a person's day. now add a multibillion dollar

company with thousands of new employees and a traffic nuisance can become a traffic nightmare. a recent environmental impact report says facebook's new menlo park campus could clog intersections all around the area. it could affect highway 101. >> family members a at nearby schools are worried about how it could affect drop off and pick up. >> it will back up everything. it will cause people to be late for work. >> reporter: facebook does have a plan to ease some of the potential congestion. it promises to limit the number of vehicle trips to and from the campus to 15,000 a day. during high commute hours it will reduce that to 2600 trips. most people we talked with loathe the idea of more cars on the roads, some people care more about the big picture. ?ield assume there will be some traffic, you have to do what you have to do. i think the jobs -- we need the

negotiating, eh? you got it! for a limited time buy select seating and get 15% back. gentleman employees at a rite- aid pharmacy in vallejo are trying to figure out how they lost track of thousands of patient prescription files. the solano avenue store lost about 3,000 records in august. the company says there is a chance the files were transferred to another store and then thrown away. rite aid says the missing files did not contain social security or credit card numbers. the company does have electronic copies of the documents. lucky supermarket now says it has received more than 500 calls from customers affected by tampered payment card readers. the company says someone tampered with 23 self checkout machines at bay area stores. the discovery was made on

november 11, but disclosed on november 23. a san jose woman tells us someone withdrew $300 from her account and the accounts of two of her family members. >> i think it's horrible especially the week before -- few weeks before christmas, people have had money withdrawn from their account. now i don't feel safe using my debit card anywhere now really. >> lucky says anyone who used self checkout lanes at the affected stores should contact their banks or credit card companies and close their accounts. oakland fire officials are investigating a fire that ripped law home early this morning. the flames damaged a house on the 2400 block of rent wick street in the maxwell park district. the house was heavily damaged. no one was hurt.

there is no word yet on what caused the fire. fewer than half of all california families now qualify as blgdz class according to a new report. the public policy institute of california defines middle class as families earning at least $44,000 but no more than $155,000 a year. it says only 49.7% of all families in the state now meet that definition. in 1980, 60% of all california families were considered middle class. the number of people applying for first time jobless benefits has dropped again. the labor department announced today 381,000 people filed initial unemployment claims. that's down 23,000 from the week before. the number of new claims is at its lowest level since february. senate republicans this

morning blocked the nomination of president barack obama's pick to head the government's new consumer financial protection bureau. the move infewer rated the president and angered senate democrats. >> this morning senate republicans blocked his nomination refusing to let the senate even go forward with an up or down vote. this makes absolutely no sense. >> the motion -- >> senate democrats could not get the 60 votes needed to move ahead on the vote. republicans say the consumer financial protection bureau has too much power and they vowed to stall any nominee until the bureau is revised. bart passengers got an early christmas present today, free tickets to ride the trains. bart employees played cantedda today in what's become a a holiday tradition. they handed out train passes to customers at seven bart

stations in oakland, berkeley and san francisco. each pass will be valid for two one-way rides this saturday and sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. bart says it's a hassle freeway to do your holiday shopping. >> i have to pay every day. >> bart officials plan to distribute free passes to 65,000 people today. today is another spare the air day in the bay area. you are not allowed to burn wood because the cold air can trap smoke near the ground and affect air quality. anyone violating the ban could face fines up to $400. we're looking toward the east bay toward mount diablo, a few high clouds and some patchy fog. it's all related with that spart air day in place.

some morning fog returns early next week. no significant rainstorms in the forecast. definitely bundle up in the next few mornings. oakland city clerk has given the organizers of petition to recall mayor jean quan the go ahead to start collecting signatures. the backers of the recall petition have until may 14 to gather the nearly 20,000 signatures needed to qualify the measure for the ballot. complicating things, a second group has filed a recall petition with the city clerk's office. the city attorney will determine whether there can be two recall drives at the same time. it may be december but there is big news about one of baseball's biggest stars coming to california. new information on the proposed future home of apple. state farm. this is jessica.

stocks are down sharply today. investors over looking the good news on new unemployment claims and continue to be concerned about europe's looming debt crisis with the summit going on today and tomorrow. the dow is down 144. nasdaq is down 36. s a and p is down 20. apple has updated its plans for what the late c.e.o. steve jobs referred to as its new spaceship campus in cupertino. it will be environmentally friendly with the roof of the circular main building covered in solar panels.
