for another day. that is will mean dry cool weather for the afternoon. and we will be dry through saturday. that means we've got changes in store for your sunday. we'll take a look at what you can expect for today through the weekend and beyond coming up. hi sal. hello rosemary. traffic on 880 in oakland is a big mess because of a problem northbound 880 at high. i've seen some road work. did not get picked up in time. that is causing a huge traffic jam. we advise you to use 580 instead. we'll tell you when that road work picks up. it will be awhile for it to clear up. just up the road about a mile or two you can see traffic is moving very nicely on 880. if you get on the freeway anywhere after high street it should be a nice drive for you. heading south is not a problem. i will let you know more about this coming up. the toddler critically wounded in last months shootout remains on life support this morning.

the latest painful decision could be made hours away. ktvu tara moriarty joins us now from children's hospital in oakland. >> reporter: the parents of hiram lawrence are agreeing with doctors that their son is indeed brain dead and needs to be taken off life support. this is a very difficult time for the family. last night they saw them at the hospital here. waiting outside for those test results which revealed that the one-year-old has no brain activity. outside pediatrician has confirmed the finding. a family friend and pastor says the reality is hitting the parents and emotions are everywhere. last night the boy's uncle said another test will be performed this morning. only after that will hiram's parents make a decision. two days ago they held a news conference outside the hospital asking for more time to assess his condition. the boy was shot in the head and six other people wounded november 28th when three hooded gunmen opened fire on a group

filming a music video. two people in the group returned fire. police have detained half a dozen people on unrelated charges but have made no arrests. investigators say the shootout may have been the result of a gang feud. a candle light vigil will be held in san francisco tonight for the family and friends of a ucsf medical student killed in january. joe hernandez was beaten to death at a nightclub. the accused killer is still on the loose even though they released the surveillance video of the suspect. 6:03. later today oakland mayor jean quan said she will be talking about major league baseball at a news conference. this morning there are a lot more questions about more than the oakland a's. claudine wong is joining us live with the latest of pro sports in oakland.

>> we know mayor jean quan will be talking baseball today. there is not only uncertainty about the a's but uncertainty about the raiders. and the future of the warriors here in oakland. the warriors are thinking about heading across the bridge to san francisco. according to the chronicle they met with ed lee and larry bear to discuss a new state of the art arena near at & t park. the oracle lease ends at the 2010-2016 season. wolf is waiting on word from major league baseball blue ribbon panel. the giants have rights down there. the mlb must give the green light for the a's to head there. what could the mayor be discussing today? we know she wants to revitalize the area. and making the coliseum area more like l.a. live and staple center. >> probably more for tomorrow's

chance to tell his side of the story. it's just everybody and what they are saying. >> 21-year-old christopher was shot in the neck during an attempted robbery at the walmart parking lot. police continues to search for two more suspects. a fourth suspect was tackled by the victims cousins and arrested at the scene. inst lancaster a woman -- in los angeles a woman accused of pepper spraying customers will not be arrested. the district attorneys office won't say if she acted in self- defense expect it did review the surveillance video and concludes there were no felonies. our time now. >> new this morning. time now 6:07. hour long video surfaces of a missing american that vanished in iran.

coming up at 6:15 why the disappearance is being considered a hostage standoff. exams have been rescheduled at virginia tech university after oughtedly campus shooting. this is what happened last night. dozens of students chanting for peace. they stood in front of a memorial honoring the 33 people that were killed on campus. the university says it will help these students recover from yesterday's deadly attack. in the meantime, virginia state police this morning announced that ballistic tests show the same handgun was used to kill a university police officer and the suspect. officer dale crouse -- that suspect killed himself nearby. students were ordered city in their dorms after the shooting.

they were like checking all the doors to make sure they were locked. telling everyone to stay in their room. >> it's like an eerie ora around come pus. >> the police are waiting for autopsy results to come in to confirm who that shooter was. the officer that was killed was an army veteran. 6:08 is the time right now. back to sal for a look at the commute. sal. >> news chopper two has arrived to look at this backup on 880 northbound. and it's huge. the only good thing we found out when news chopper two arrived they started picking up the cones on 880. we just watched them do that. news chapper two is looking at the backup. what is happening overnight they are doing a little bit of

road work. they are shifting traffic around. it lock them longer than they thought it would if so again 880. even though the cones are picked up it will be slightly different for you. we recommend still using 580 and chp has lifted the restriction for trucks on 580 temporarily. it looks like there is still work going on there. let's move to other pictures now. this is a look at the bay bridge. it's a little lighter than usual. and also this morning we are looking at 880 northbound. there is a crash at mission boulevard involving an overturned vehicle. it's not causing a big delay right now. let's go to rosemary. good morning, to you. patchy fog and frost. what a gorgeous view of the moon. 6:15. the family of an american hostage that disappeared in iran is issuing a new plea this morning for his safe return. as alison burns reports they are also showing us a new heart wrenching video. alison. >> reporter: bob levingson's family is releasing the video now because they don't know what else to do. here's the website the family has set up. helpboblevingson.com. his son and wife make a plea to their unknown captors. they show a proof of life video they received more than a year ago. levingson says he's in poor health. running out of diabetes medicine and references his long career as an fbi as he calls on the u.s. government to try to save him. >> please help me get home. 33 years of service for the united states deserves

something. please help me. >> reporter: it's unclear where he is being held. investigators say the video was likely sent from pakistan not iran. back in march she believed levingson was alive. but u.s. officials have no idea who is holding him. why bob levingson was in iran in the first place during my next update in about an hour. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. 6:17. iranian television aired video of what it claims is a u.s. stealth drone plane that crashed in iran last week. military officials say here it is. the drone was supposed to be hunting insurgents in western afghanistan and no order to spy on iran. there is concern iran could gather very important surveillance information from this drone. the unmanned plane is said to be the same model drone that

was used to spy on osama bin laden before he was killed. political leaders are turning up the heat on holder. they are threatening impeachment saying holder withheld critical information from congress. the federal disastrous gun tracking program. >> the answers that you have given so far are basically saying somebody else did it. there is no responsibility within the justice department. if we don't get to the bottom of this, and that requires your assistance on that. there is only one alternative that congress has. and it's called impeachment. >> holder admits the feds made big mistakes in the gun program but calls the impeachment talk quote a political witch hunt. jean quan is facing two

separate recall drives this morning. her opponents picked up petitions yesterday. now they need to collect almost 20,000 signatures by may. quan says 11 months in office is not enough time to solve the city's problems and that removing her now is unfair. time now 6:18. the california state agency in charge of making sure that school buildings are safe is on the hot seat. the state auditors office says it investigated how the division of state architect implemented the field act. that is an earthquake safety law. the division has dessert fewed construction projects when they comply with that act. as of december 2010, 16,000 projects all over the state are remaining uncertified. the audit also says it has defective oversight. 6:19 is the time. back to sal for a look at the commute. how are friday light? >> not pam and dave.

it's pretty slow. you can see traffic will be slow. it looks like now there is also a couple chp cars there. northbound 880 in the vicinity of the coliseum. we are look at all the slow traffic here if you are driving up from san leandro over toward the downtown oakland area. it has been very slow as news chopper two is showing us. those are the headlights approaching from san leandro. this is because of earlier lane closures at high street. and also new lane configuration. things have improved. just about ten minutes ago they have opened up all the lanes. there is a new lane configuration. let's take a look now at the bay bridge. because of the road work i think on 880 the bay bridge which is usually crowded by now has not become crowded. i think a lot of people are still stuck on 880. there is a new crash in pleasanton westbound 580 at 680 it did block all the lanes. if you are driving from

right now all the lanes are temporarily closed on northbound 880. all right sal. time now 6:26. a sheriffs office was fire bombed. it happened november 15th in santa barbara county. this is surveillance video. the suspect walks up to the building, throws two molotov cocktails there at the sheriff station. the fbi is offering a $5,000 reward. 12-year-old pleasanton boy managed to collect hundreds of coats for the one warm coat drive. carson says it was easy getting donations. he went door to door to hand out fliers at pipless homes. at people's homes. so far he's collected 600 coats. his goal for next 1,000. time now 6:27. it was a scene of one of the worst acts of violence in the american history. what we know this morning about

the family attorney said that should happen sometime later this afternoon. you can imagine the family is completely devastated. they were here last night at the children's hospital of oakland waiting for test results which did show their child had no brain activity. the decision came after the family pubically acknowledged wednesday that they had reached a cross roads about the boy's treatment. doctors have said hiram's prognosis is grim. theyed that a second opinion from their pediatrician. six other people were wounded when three hooded gunmen opened fire on a group filming a music video at seventh and willow street. at least two people in the group returned fire. now police have detained around half a dozen people on unrelated charges but have made no arrests in connection with that shooting. investigators have said the shootout may have been a gang

feud. that would make the second time this year a young child died from a gang feud. live in oakland i'm tara moriarty. police have not evicted occupy boston protestors despite a midnight deadline for them to leave their camp. even though the mayor set the deadline he did not specify when the camp would be shut down. no arrests were made and no tents were removed overnight. protestors estimate between 100 and 150 people are living in the boston camp. dozens of police officers cleared out the occupy santa cruz camp. police gave campers four minutes to clear out early yesterday morning. at least six people were arrested. 20 tents were dismantled. park officials say they cleaned up eight tons of garbage in two hours after the protestors were evicted. 6:33. it's news that a lot of bay area baseball fans are buzzing about this morning. oakland mayor jean quan has

called a news conference for noontime today. she is expected to make a big announcement about major league baseball. ktvu claudine wong will have all the details in the live report coming up for you at 6:45. heartless thief stole several hundred dollars worth of christmas gifts from a single mother in contra costa county. this time of the year the crooks really come out. this is carie mathis. she said someone broke into the trunk of her car. they stole most of the christmas gifts she had purchased for her six-year-old twins. her son's baseball gear was also stolen. >> i saved over a long period of time. $10 here and there. and you know it's gone. it's just gone because of somebody's selfishness. >> the sheriff department says they will take up a collection trying to help miss mathis and her children. in the meantime law enforcement officials remind us all don't store christmas packages in

years ago. >> reporter: good morning. yeah ironically they were here in the nation's capitol. inclueing the university's head of police to talk about that incident that happened in 2007. 33 people left dead that day. including the student gunman. which makes them particularly vigilant. now news conference has been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. eastern time. about 15 minutes from now to get the latest developments on what exactly happened yesterday afternoon and events started unfolding. when a virginia tech police officer made a routine traffic stop. gunshots were fired and started to unfold. unfortunately that campus police officer a four year veteran of the force. 39-year-old derrick crouse was killed. he was shot and killed. a second man is yet to be identified. a university of spokesman said that person was not a student at the university. we are waiting for the latest developments in the investigation. we are hoping to hear what the motive might have been for the

innow any growth. commissioner bud yet to rule on that. the raiders also facing an uncertain future. as the niners move to santa clara some question whether the nfl will put dollars behind that project if it's a shared stadium between the two teams. then you have the warriors. nba training camp opened today and this morning. there are reports the warriors are talking about moving to san francisco. the chronical reporting that the team met with mayor ed lee to build a state of the art arena near at & t park. >> as far as i'm concerned they should remain here. >> do you think they will? >> i don't think the city is trying to do anything to keep them here. i mean, we deserve just as much economic boom as everybody else throughout california. so why shouldn't we get to keep them? >> no doubt the coliseum is old. no doubt this morning there is

a push to get it renovated. the question is will it be enough to keep these teams here? live in oakland claudine wong. new controversy is brewing involving the uc davis pepper spraying incident. it has been one week since an independent inquire began and some are calling it a big waste of time. coming up who is saying it's worth it and the price the university has spent to pay for the investigation. the vta has approved $772 million in funds to start the first phase of the project in february. the extension would link the fremont bart station to the neighborhood of north san jose. that could be complete as early as 2016. 18 months ahead of the original schedule. the long-term plan is to extend bart all the way down to san jose where it will link up with cal train.

the assault allegations made between dominic strauss-kahn. there are three videos. strauss-kahn checking out of the new york hotel on may 14th. another video shows the maid who claims she was attacked reenacting the incident to her supervisor. and then two hotel staffers doing a dance there. there is suspect that strauss- kahn may have been set up. >> they could have found out they won the football pool. or the yankees made a big trade. >> prosecutors dropped criminal charges in the case. however the accuser has filed a civil lawsuit. strauss-kahn claims they had consensual sex. in the last hour government officials in india just arrested six hospital employees following a deadly fire this morning that left 89 people dead. the hospital staff is accused of abandoning the patients when

this fire broke out. as we said 89 people were killed. the fire started in the hospital's basement. a lot of smoke quickly filled the building. the hospital staff ran out of the building leaving 160 patients inside. in a story you will only see here on two. with the america's cup coming in 2013 there is growing concern that san francisco may not respond quickly enough for fire on a water. it was deemed seismicically unsafe and yellow tagged in 2006. because the station floor could k no longer support a fire engine, outside engine companies must go there and board the fire boats that are tethered to a crumbling pier. >> they say that has about 18 months of life left in it. it should collapseth collapse just before the america's cup comes to san francisco. >> the fire department is still confident in meeting response
