we are following breaking news in san francisco. firefighters there are responding to a fire at ellis and jones streets. at one point the flames were shooting out of the window. crews though just got that single alarm fire under control. it all happened in the past 15 minutes. the fire department tells us there are at least three victims and we have a crew on the way and we'll update you tonight on the 10:00 news. now to a scare today at a bay area grocery store. a pickup truck suddenly crashed through the supermarket's front doors with customers inside shopping. patty lee is live now at the safeway in vallejo. patty? >> reporter: well, heather this gives new meaning to the term express lane and it started when a regular customer came here to shop for groceries. but instead of stopping to park, he drove right through these now boarded up doors. it took 15 seconds to turn this safeway into a makeshift motorway. >> i saw the car or the little

pickup truck go into my front lobby. crashing things out of the way as it went and slamming into my starbucks. >> reporter: fire crews say at least 25 people were shopping when the truck came through just after 8:00 a.m. >> there were a lot of people in the actual store and being checked out at the time that the person drove behind them. >> no one was hit or hurt not even the driver who was a regular customer in his late 80s. >> said that his foot simply got stuck on the accelerator and he proceeded through the aisles. >> reporter: my first thought was this was an intentional thing. when nathan was called to help clean up the mess he could not believe his eyes. >> you can see the tire tracks going through the store. all the way down to the starbucks, the starbucks had been hit. some of the case work in- between had been hit. >> reporter: the store closed for two hours while the front door was boarded up and broken equipment including the pickup truck removed. >> i was surprised. i'm like how did this car not stop right when he hit the

door? but it kind of kept going. >> reporter: the manager can listen to customers joke about the situation now. but only because the damage was limited to things that can be replaced or repaired. >> the fact that no one was there in the way and nobody got hurt or hit by anything flying through was absolutely amazing. >> reporter: the driver of the truck has not been cited. he was picked up here at the store by his wife and we are told he is embarrassed and feels bad about the whole situation. reporting live, patty lee, ktvu channel 2 news. another unusual accident left live crabs all over a major road overnight. the crash involving a big rig and another vehicle happened around 11:00 last night on highway 92 near pillar creek road not far from half-moon bay. the chp shut down both lanes of traffic when the rig spilled the load of live crab all over the highway. the road reopened at 2:00 a.m. two days before the planned shut down of the port of oakland the occupy movement is rallying on both sides of the bay.

ktvu's jade hernandez is stapping by live in san francisco -- standing by live in san francisco with protestors. jade? >> reporter: there's more to tonight's holiday shopping hustle and bustle. about 75 demonstrators tried the get the message out. we checked in on them about 40 minutes ago. one occupy san francisco supporter told me he estimated about 500 people began to march from justin herman plaza around 3:00 this afternoon. they marched down market to powell then union square. speakers have rallied the crowds. weekly marchers in san francisco have been a constant since the occupy movement began in the city but with a call to shut down to port of oakland monday afternoon. today's march had more emphasis placed on it and supporters of the movement felt back by even though who did not participate today. >> we have a good reaction from people along the streets and good turnout here. be back at the herman plaza

soon. >> if you imagine a bubble, you have the rich on top and you have the rest of us on the bottom. they can only rise so far before that bubble bursts. >> reporter: our crew also stopped by occupy oakland scheduled events this afternoon. about 20 protestors met at frank ogawa plaza to hear a lecture. now there's also a small group of occupy sf supporters in front of the federal reserve bank here in san francisco. more on that later tonight. reporting live from san francisco, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. another encampment was raided this time in boston. police moved in around 5:00 this morning arresting 46 people for trespassing and tearing down tends. officials described the sweep as peaceful saying they were very accommodating and the camp was set up 10 weeks ago. police say it had become a public health and safety hazard. in oakland police tonight are investigating is drive-by

shooting that left a man dead inside his home. officers responded just after 3:30 this morning to east 28th street near 11th avenue. that's two blocks from high land hospital. his family identified the man as 46-year-old thorn nest. his son told ktvu channel 2 news the family was asleep when they heard multiple gunshots and then tires screeching. the son says one bullet went through the walls and struck and killed his father. police say the motive is not known. palo alto police are looking for one man they say is responsible for two attempted robberied just this morning. officials say it all happened in the 10:00 hour in the north end of town and both to have robberies officials say the man spoke spanish, claimed he had and gun and then demanded money or belongings. no one was hurt. officers believer the man also stole a bicycle right out of an open garage. police in san francisco are asking for the public's help in finding a man who sexually assaulted two women in the city's mission district.

the first attack happened in november, the second on thursday. he's described as african- american man in his mid 30s with a medium build. investigators say in both cases the victims were attacked from behind as they walked along 24th street between 3:00 and 6:30 in the morning. anyone with information is asked to call san francisco police. funeral services were held today in menlo park for a transgender woman shot to death last month in hollywood. family and friends of 32-year- old nathan vickers gathered this morning. vickers who preferred to be called cassidy died november 17th. some have called it a hate crime but the mother says the motive didn't matter to her. >> no, because he was my son. he was a good child. i raised him well. my son -- you see the church was packed. everybody loved my son. he wasn't a bad kid or anything. you know? he was a good child. >> police say they suspect the same man who killed vickers

robbed a second transgender woman a short time later fired at her, but missed. in san francisco today, an unusual summit aimed at teaching tolerance and protecting students from discrimination and harassment. as we report, the people who attended know the effects of bullying all too well. >> reporter: these students were all smiles as they posed for the camera, they say here they feel comfortable and accepted. feelings they don't always experience in other environments. >> like in middle school they would like kick me and like punch me for being gay. >> reporter: but they moved beyond that humiliation. >> in high school i found this thing called straight for your life. >> reporter: it's a network of student clubs across the state and today in san francisco they came together. they shared resources and personal stories. >> there's a lot more communication now. >> reporter: and took part in more than 20 workshops on everything from student health

to dealing with bullying. >> there were also workshops for teachers and student group advisers giving them advice on implementing a new law. it's called the fair education act and it goes into effect january 1st. >> that actually requires schools to incorporate the history and movements of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people into their social science instruction. >> reporter: in the workshop, educators got tips on how to address students and parents who may have concerns about the law. >> the law leaves it totally up to local schools to decide how to think it best fits into their plans. >> reporter: this year, he is teaching his own workshop on overcoming bullying. he says helping others is part of the healing process. >> when you help someone out, you're going to help like yourself out as well and kind of like you've taken responsibility. >> reporter: in san francisco, ali racemous, ktvu channel 2 news. now to the race for the white house. and at this hour the front runners for the republican nomination are going head-to- head in iowa.

tonight's debate just got underway. it is the first debate with newt gingrich at the top of the polls. he faces former front runner mitt romney as well as rick perry, rick santorum and ron paul. this is the first of two final debates in iowa. the second will be held next thursday. newt gingrich is defending himself tonight over remarks he made about palestinians. the jewish channel released footage of the interview on youtube yesterday. it shows the former house speaker calling palestinians a quote invented people because they never had a state. palestinian officials say they're offended by gingrich's comments but a spokesman for gingrich says he stand by his remarks and supports a negotiated peace agreement with israel and palestine. the congressional standoff with the payroll tax cut was one subject of the weekly address today for president obama. >> congress cannot end the year by taking money out of the pockets of working americans. now is the time to do what's right for the american people.

>> unless a deal is reached in congress, the president says nearly 160 million americans will see their taxes go up at the end of the month. president's also criticized republicans for blocking his nomination of former ohio attorney general richard core draw to head the nation's new watchdog agency. a northern california food company is recalling 6,000 cartons of cilantro tonight. because of fears of possible salmonella. the pacific international marketing company issued the recall after the food and drug administration found salmonella in a sample. temperatures grown in arizona and -- it was grown in arizona and distributed in seven states including california. no reports of illnesses so far. huge protests erupt in russia. hear what's behind the demonstration and why there's concern about a certain type of government crackdown on those protestors. i think it's really cool how everybody can use their own stuff. they need help with all their stuff. >> cool indeed.

posting online. liberian president ellen johnson-sirleaf joined her country women. they were honored for work for womens' rights, carmen is the first arab woman ever to win the award. and less than an hour ago in south africa, the head of the climate change conference said the so-called chi owe toe agreement has been extended another five years. leaders agreed to start talks on a new global pollution agreement. the united states, china and india have been opposed to any plan that would include a legal obligation to comply. some first responders in the bay area are answering a different kind of emergency this weekend. saving the holidays for hundreds of kids in need. ktvu explain how two massive toy giveaways are impacting. >> reporter: making christmas happen for tracy's five children is no easy task. how do you do it with five

kids? >> i pray often. >> reporter: this year san jose firefighters are answering their prayers with this toy drive connecting more than 500 families with gifts. it's a feat this 12-year-old knows santa would be proud of. >> they're really doing a good job here giving everybody all these presents and stuff. i think it's really cool how everyone can get their own stuff and need help with the presents. >> reporter: each one of the families that comes here to san jose gets one of the customized bags of gifts that are already wrapped. but it's no free for all. the process of matching them up with kids who are most in need starts in august. local charities help firefighters register each family to make sure everyone in this line legitimately needs help. >> as many people as that is, that's just a small fraction of the families in need here in this santa clara county. us as firefighters -- we get to see that every day. >> reporter: help arrived in a different kind of sleigh for military families in move fit field as part of operation toy

drop. men and women had their pick of more than $500,000 worth of new toys and clothes. >> been in the military for 15 years and this is -- been you know helping out a lot of families. i mean when i started off in the military, we didn't make a lot of money and you know, for having big bills and stuff, and this helped a lot. >> reporter: eric rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news. the chp also working to keep the holidays happy for kids. the agency's golden gate division held the annual stuff the patrol car today. the toy drive is all part of the statewide tips for kids program which collects and distributes toys the children in need. they also use the event to promote child safety on the road. volunteers laid wreaths on military graves today. san francisco is one of 500 sites where volunteers pate respects this morning. the group wreaths across america is behind the movement to pay tribute to troops on the

second saturday of december. in virginia, volunteers laid 90,000 wreaths at arlington national cemetery. that's where the tradition started 25 years ago. each year, a different historic cemetery is chosen. organizers say the greenery helps keep the memories alive. clear skies over much of the bay area this morning. gave thousands of people a good view of a rare celestial sight. a total lunar eclipse. the eclipse started just after 3:30 this morning when the earth's shadow began to fall on the moon. the moon was completely blacked out by 6:06 a.m. the eclipse lasted about 50 minutes. dozen of people went to the earth and science center in oakland to see the eclipse through the center's telescope. >> it was spectacular: first time here and it was awesome being able to look at the telescope and to see the whole moon. >> it is pretty cool.

there won't be another total lunar eclipse though until april of 2014 and nasa says that one will also be visible from the u.s.. and fortunately not a lot of clouds in the sky to prevent people from getting out and seeing all that. mark, how's it looking in the sky tonight? >> the skies will be changing and thankfully we had the clear skies to start out the weekend but the high clouds will be increasing early sunday morning and right now on the maps on live storm tracker 2, mostly clear skies over the bay area. we'll check in on some of the current numbers as we do we'll zoom in and temperatures in most areas back down into the 40s. san jose right now around 50 degrees reporting fair skies. also a bit of some haze. this was the scene today looking out to the estuary and also the bay out there. some lower clouds developing into patchy fog in near parts of the shoreline. tomorrow morning with the clouds in place, it won't be as cold tomorrow morning compared to this morning but still, a few neighborhoods back down into the lower 30s.

for santa rosa and napa, san jose at 39 degrees, oakland at 40 and vallejo in the mid 30s around 35. you can see on the satellite that radar and a cluster of high clouds moving in just overthe past few hours. i am tracking another weather system out here to the pacific. not too impressive on the satellite and it's a pretty weak storm but it will be approaching our region. our local neighborhoods for tomorrow. so the main impact for the your sunday. more cloud cover out there, partly to mostly cloudy skies. we do bring in the chance of a few showers but the main center of the system remains out here in the pacific and actually has it tracked ahead down to southern california sunday night and monday. but you can count on the cloud cover and also cooler temperatures afternoon highs only in the lower 50s. here's our updated forecast model showing you the clouds tonight at 10:00. it will be dry tonight at 10:00 if then tomorrow morning not a lot to show you. in fact throughout the day, in the too generous with the

shower coverage here. a few clouds at 8:00 and you have to look hard but not a lot of activity here. a few showers in the pacific showing up here and also a little bit of activity approaching the coastline. so a chance of a spotty shower or a sprinkle but still the main impacts more cloud cover and lower afternoon highs. that's reflected in the forecast for tomorrow morning around 7:00. right around 40-degrees in most spots and then by the afternoon hours most neighborhoods back up into the low to mid-50s. so everybody comes down at least for the afternoon highs from today's readings. santa rosa barely 50 for tomorrow afternoon. san mateo at 53. here's a look ahead the extended forecast. you can see the rain cloud just representing the chance of a spotty shower or sprinkle for tomorrow. mainly in the afternoon into the evening hours. some lingering clouds for monday. mostly for the morning hours and another quiet weather pattern setting up for tuesday and wednesday. and then we could be tracking some more showers by thursday of next week but we'll have the updated forecast on the weather system in the pacific coming up and it could kind of change the

timing of the coverage and we'll have that update at 10:00. an unusual -- sorry. >> that's all right. the obama administration is working to clarify listings for endangered species. a new policy proposed yesterday would no longer allow different classifications in neighborhooding states. the rule would replace a 2007 bush era policy that allows for example a plant or animal to be listed as endangered in one state but not in another. they say it would help clarify the species eligible for protection under the act. now an unusual holiday traffic session is underway. -- tradition is underway. hear what's behind a group of jovial santas and why they're wandering the streets of san francisco.
