authority. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now this is ktvu channel 2news at five. >> good evening. i'm ken wayne. >> i'm heather holmes. a smell of diesel can be detected across parts of the uc berkeley campus. as crews worked to clean up a fuel spill. alex savage live with the fall out and the cause of the 1700- gallon spill. >> reporter: that fuel spilled from a faulty generator on campus. 1700 gallons leaked and some of it flowed here into strawberry creek. you can see pads have been put down, some of the fuel went downstream in to the bay. workers in biohazard suits used a pump to suck up spilled fuel from the creek. university officials say the problem started upstream in the basement of stanley hall where

last night a generator started leaking fuel. some plowed flowed in to pumps. >> normally that's not a problem but when it in this case is released with in the building and went into the stumps, then they pumped a mix of ground water and diesel into the creek. >> reporter: mark is with the office of environmental health and safety. he said only a fraction of the 1700 gallons of spilled fuel got into the creek. >> it appears that the amount that was released into the creek didn't have any significant impact on wildlife but we want to confirm that. >> reporter: he said some of the deesel also flowed down into the bay. that area was closed off today and the coast guard put out booms to contain the small slick that they describe as five feet by ten feet. >> diesel is toxic to almost everything. >> reporter: after today's spill they are worried about

wildlife from birds to fish. they think the university should have had safe guards in place. >> the diesel line ruptures in a building should be a physical barrier that prevents it from going to the stream. >> reporter: the signs have now gone up urging people to stay away from the creek at least for the time being. the epa has now been called in as well to try to figure out how this spill will impact wildlife moving forward. we are live in berkeley. >> days after being evict from the plaza occupy san francisco protesters moved to a different location. the latest camp didn't last long. police moved in early this morning and arrested more than 50 people. >> reporter: more than a hundred police officers in riot gear lined up along market street. they told the 60 protesters who

had been sleeping there it was time to go. >> you can't live on a public street to set up cooking and bed stuffs and book shelves and things and then live there. >> reporter: police arrested 55 people, many had started gathering here a couple days ago after the main camp was broken up last week. >> we are out here protesting every day. human beings need sleep. that's just how it works. >> reporter: department of public works crews took four truck loads of things and cleared the street. people going into work watched. >> i feel sorry for them. it's really sad. >> reporter: why? >> because they have any reason to protest. they don't have a house, they don't have a job. >> we have been providing probably for a week now homeless services, beds,. >> reporter: the 55 people

arrested were cited and released and by 9:00 many of them started to make their way back to the sidewalk in front of the federal reserve. james was one of the people arrested. >> why should i have to have permission to sleep in a public spot? i'm a part of the public. republican he said he will stay here even if it means standing instead of sleeping on the sidewalk. in san francisco. >> across the bay occupy oakland protesters are calling for a day long demonstration tomorrow. you may remember this scene from last month when occupy protesters shut down the port of oakland. they plan to bring back this tactic tomorrow and coming up later at 5:30 oakland mayor's open letter questioning the motivation for the planned blockade. >> a 14-year-old boy is dead tonight and another is recovering after a double shooting in santa cruz. the shooting happened last night. deputies not released the name of the dead teen.

the second 14-year-old was treated and released. investigators haven't released any suspect information but did say that the shooting appeared to be gang related. they say they are confident an arrest will be made soon. people who live in a public housing high-rise in san francisco have questions about a fire that swept through the building yesterday. some say they smelled smoke before the fire alarms went off. we have returned to that scene tonight to get answers. >> reporter: you can see some of the smoke damage in the high- rise behind me from yesterday's fire. city housing officials say they are concerned about the allegations that the smoke alarms didn't go off. charles came home today in a red cross blanket. he said yesterday he was trapped in his apartment which had filled with smoke. >> i couldn't see six feet in front of me. it was pretty bad. >> reporter: other residents say their first clue there was a fire was the sound of fire

truck sirens, not smoke alarms. >> i smelled the fire and then the alarm went -- it didn't go off. >> reporter: the units have smoke alarms and so does every floor. the housing authority said the department of housing and urban development just inspected the fire system a week and a half ago and they passed. >> we know the fire systems in place and are working. if somebody is saying that they are -- that it didn't go off there could be a reason such as that the smoke never got into their unit. >> reporter: some who smelled smoke claim the main alarm didn't go off. >> i didn't hear the one in the biling. my alarm went off. >> reporter: the housing authority said they will question each resident to figure out if there was a problem. fire officials are investigating but say some of the firefighter who responded did hear alarms though it's unclear if it was on all floors. >> >> we will make sure everything is in order.

this could have been a lot worse if the systems weren't in order. >> reporter: officials trying to determine a cause the blaze. tonight the red cross is helping 27 of the resident who have apartment that are unliveable. the housing authority is working on getting them transferred to another property. reporting live from san francisco, ktvu channel 2news. >> another san francisco fire forced almost a dozen people from their homes last night. this is a photograph of the flames sent to us by a viewer, take a look. the building is at 4th and utah street. about 100 firefighters were called to the scene. the fire started just before 10:00 and took about an hour to control. firefighters say everybody made it out safely. >> we had no injuries to civilians or to firefighters and the firefighters were actually able to remove some pets the building so there were no deaths. >> reporter: firefighters say they don't know how or where

the fire started. the fire spread to a building next door but it wasn't heavyly damaged. the red cross is helping shelter those displaced residents. >> concern rising in san francisco's mission district after police asked the community for help to try to find a man who assaulted at least two women. police say the latest happened last thursday. the first attack happened back in mid-november. police say both times the women were attacked from behind as they walked on 24th street in the area between delores street. the attacks happened between 3 and 6:30 a.m. though the women fought back they weren't able to avoid toa assault avoid assault. >> we look around making sure nobody is hanging out. >> reporter: police have released this video of the suspect. he is a black male in his mid- 30s between 5'9'' and 6 feet tall with a medium build.

anyone with anyone information is asked to call the police. immaterial. >> a man in a wheelchair tried to cross a street was struck by a van and killed. it happened around 9:30 at the intersection of gomer and patrick. police say the driver of the van was not hurt and stayed at the scene. officers don't believe drugs or alcohol were involved. the name of the victim hasn't been released. >> three people have been detained after a high speed chase. around 2:30 the highway patrol said they saw a car weaving recklessly. they chased the bmw through oakland and into richmond on interstate 580. they say speeds exceeded 100 miles an hour before it crashed into a pole. that started a fire and temporarily knocked out power to several hundred customers. all of them have had power again by noon today. >> a pursuit 234 in concord lead to an officer involved

shooting. officers were called to a disturbance at a party just after one. they say an armed man and others got into a car and sped away. when officers tracked down the individual the suspect displayed a handgun. they say the officer fired several shots in self-defense. nobody was hit and the three people were taken in to custody. in san jose investigators searching for clues in a shooting that sent one man to the hospital. it happened around 8:00 last night on monterey road and skyway drive. the man was a wanted parolee riding in a stone car. they believe he was shot by someone who pulled up in another vehicle. he was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. no arrests have been made. there is a possibility of light showers here in the bay area tonight and early tomorrow. mark is analyzing the latest and is here now with the details. >> reporter: you may have noticed the increase in the clouds over the past few hours

and even producing some light showers and sprinkles. the coverage not impressive but you can see some activity at least approaching santa cruz and around mountain view and redwood city. that possibility will linger as you said into tonight and also into a good portion of monday. for your monday mostly cloudy, there is a chance of a shower and temperatures tomorrow morning will not be as cold as this morning. coolest locations will be in the lowest 30s near napa and santa rose a san francisco around 45, san jose 42 degrees. here you can pick out the developments off shore. this area of low pressure not to impressive but the last few frames little bit of activity on the radar especially for the south bay, closer to monterey. the updated forecast model as we take this into the evening hours and by ten we could track a few spotty showers n is all very light, not amounting to much. still the possibility into tomorrow morning as well for the morning drive between seven and eight. coming up i will show you the changing conditions for

american families in michigan. in a statement the store apologized for making some people unhappy. the company didn't say if it would start advertising again during the show. >> a convicted murderer is dead and his prison cell mate is suspected of killing him. the department of corrections said the 38-year-old agency found unresponsive in his cell at california state prison sacramento early yesterday morning. he was later pronounced dead at a hospital. there is no word on the cause of death. officials say they believe his cell mate is responsible. the death just a few days after 11 were hurt in a riot at the same prison. >> alameda county officials joining health care leaders to discuss the health care overhall. that is set for tomorrow morning at the board of supervisors in oakland. officials will go offer how health care reform affects care. that includes short term health care services usually in hospitals or emergency rooms, tomorrow's event is the second in a series of hearings on the

jade hernandez is live with the mayor's open letter questioning the rationale of the port as a target. >> reporter: in my hand i have a copy of the open letter sent by the mayor to occupy protesters. she doesn't want this port shut down tomorrow. in fact with in the letter she says the port of oakland is not the home of the 1%, rather it generates 73,000 jobs in the area and it's connected to 800,000 job across the country. she said i encourage those who want to make a statement on monday to do so peacefully and respectfully and to keep the port open, the lively hood of many of the 99% here in oakland and throughout northern california depend on it. she goes onto say shutting down the port sends the wrong message to the truckers, warehouse and shore men who may be affected. we stopped by the plaza where a hundred demonstrators gathered

coverage and its not much, focused down toward santa cruz, you can see the coverage. better bet of picking up light shower activity around santa cruz -- some action here not much right around wood side and between mountain view in the form of a light shower or just a few sprinkles. this will be the pattern. it could increase in coverage into late tonight and early tomorrow morning. talking about the clouds increasing. this was the scene toward san francisco bay. you can see a little bit of a break in the cloud cover late this afternoon but still plenty of overcast across a good portion of the bay area. as far as current numbers updated we were starting to cool off into the 40s, 46 right now in fairfield, santa rosa around 49 and san jose in around 51 degrees. satellite and radar you can see the high clouds moving in to the bay area. you can see activity once again showing up on the radar.

this system responsible for this is out in the pacific and it's not going to make landfall but it'll be approaching southern california. southern california has showers in the forecast for tomorrow. this will be close enough to keep the clouds in the forecast for tonight into tomorrow morning. the chance of a few light showers and temperatures mainly in the mid50s for afternoon highs. here we go with the updated forecast model. we will go into the evening and could have action. right now it's showing at least for the ten and 11:00 hour in the east bay and parts of the south bay. tomorrow morning for the morning drive not a lot of coverage but can't rule out the chance of a spotty shower for monday morning. here is the change in to the afternoon by three, four and five. the clouds start to lift out revealing mostly sunny skies and that will set the stage for a couple dry days in to tuesday and wednesday. for tomorrow morning that chance of a shower, most areas around 40, by 12:00 partly cloudy and more sun by three
