channel 2 news continues. this is ktvu channel 2 news. thank you for joining us, it is monday december 12th, i am pam cook. >> and i am dave clark, here is steve. we have cloudy skies and very light rain, garden variety showers, at least something is falling from the sky with precipitation because we have not had any this month. highs today under mostly cloudy skies in the mid-50s, here is sal. good morning traffic is moving along well as you drive passed the coliseum with no major issues and the drive looks good at the bay bridge toll plaza but there is a stalled car which may cause slowing of traffic, let's go back to the desk. the demonstration started

officially ten minutes ago and protesters are trying to shut down the port of oakland and other ports along the coast. march march is starting live let's go to kraig debro on the move with the protesters, so what is happening? >> well, we are literally driving behind a row of police cars and ahead of them, they are with occupied oakland and supporters going to the port of oakland with tara moriarty, it is part of a day long action, protesters with many occupied sites trying to blockade all ports up and down the west coast including the largest oakland which is number 5 and long beach which is number two. let's look at the videotape we shot just probably ten minutes ago as you can see them

marching down 7th street towards the port of oakland. we were there when supporters began to arrive. it was to protest what the 1% was doing with the money they have and a lot of them feel the 99% is not getting the money through healthcare and many are asking are you not hurting them by blocking their way to work? >> well a lot of people are taking the time off to speak up for each other. >> okay. >> reporter: thank you. >> and i'm taking time off today too to stand up for everybody. >> reporter: and police initial initially were keeping their distance but that has changed.

they are still there giving you a live look but now that the march is underway, police are here in force again keeping their distance and they are here in case things do not go the peaceful way they have planned it. of course they put out a press release saying they disagree with the goals of today's protest, 07,000 people -- 70,000 people across the area believe it will do more to hurt than help but of course they are preventing that -- presenting that argument. coming to you we will be in a more stable position but for now in oakland from our news truck kraig debro ktvu channel 2 news. and we want to continue our coverage, tara moriarty is out at the port of oakland, what do you see out there right now?

>> reporter: well we are here and we have seen several buses some of them carrying protesters others carrying police. if you look here, you can see a bunch of lights and a bunch of police have set up blockade in that section. if you pan to the right there were protesters walking and a couple we have also seen walking their bikes. a few hours ago they were marching and loading on to vans about 60 of them. we have seen alameda sheriff's deputies and they are just up the road from where we are standing and stationed in one major sort of the area. they will be ready to try to prevent protesters from blockading the port and this is the second time in two months the protesters have tried to

shut it down. >> the statement is not heard yet, they have shut down all the occupied. this is a statement that you cannot stop us. you can shut down the camp, you cannot shut down the idea. >> thousands shut down and at the hour where they put up third and this area, they said they needed to get through. >> reporter: this time around the blockade is not being supported by the teamsters union which reps truck drivers. we want to mention a march today at 3:00 at oakland city hall where they want to march to the port. everybody is moving around and we don't see anyone central location for these protesters so we will bring it to you live

police don't know his condition but it happened during a robbery attempt. they are doing clean up efforts after a navy tugboat started sinking off richmond. there is a fuel leak which is believed to be 300 gallons of fuel leaked out. they have placed booms for containment and more booms are expected to be put there today. >> we have three layers of boom to make sure the oil does not get out of the dry dock area and we have seen no significant oil anywhere else except within the dry dock and we have done tests to confirm that. >> it is docked next to another decommissioned tugboat and both have been there for the last ten years. it was a less than festive moment for san jose in the park. parts of a ferris wheel started

falling to the ground and on south market street, they feature 20 carnival type rides. they saw a large churning of the ferris wheel -- chunk of the ferris wheel fall off. it started with a rivets attached to the box. this one knocked a big piece of fiberglass loose. the problem we are told has been fixed. the prime minister of iraq will meet at the white house as the last group of soldiers prepares to leave iraq. coming up, we will have a live report coming up from our washington d.c. room with concerns ahead of the new year's eve deadline to be out of iraq. you've got to get out of the house. do you have the toll plaza, i know you are watching a bunch of things.

here in the traffic center, we have a live look and remember, we are following the occupied protesters, so let's go and look at those. bay bridge is decent, that is when they turn on metering lights. and traffic looks good as you drive passed the coliseum. this morning in san jose, northbound 280 looks good and 101 in san jose is off to a good start. we look at 101 in palo alto, that is a nice drive and so is 280 heading south. let's go to steve. we need the snow in the mountains, there is nothing up there and this is our first bit of rain and emphasis on little. we are looking at the 5 to 10

day, there is nothing. 48-52 most of it should be ending and we will continue to carry it out. you can see some of these bans and there are tremendous breaks so we get a few drops and our future forecast model, by 9:00 most of it is gone and it will still stay cloudy and we will get back into some fog. if the system generates a little wind, we don't have to deal with that. it is stronger in southern california. santa rosa mountain view, light rain, everybody else says cloudy. napa also at 44 degrees and we have some good moisture in southern california and we have

some good rain down there. the system will boot scoot down the coast. highs will be in the mid-50s and that is pretty good. napa 45 and 56, tuesday and wednesday looked quiet and after that everything is gone. we will be back to a quiet dry pattern as we go into the weekend. a long nightmare has finally come to an end for one american teenager. they are being replaced with kiosks at the mexican border. and they are beginning a march to shut down the port of oakland, take a look news chopper 2 overhead, you can see protesters are starting to move in and we have reporters there as well, we will be right back.

. the new idea to put in kiosks at big ben national park will allow people to scan their

documents and they would patrol the area around the kiosks. some say the unmanned kiosks will promote unlawful crossings. they are allowing the state to begin forcing measures that have been blocked by lower courts and the provision sets off an uproar each time. they want police to question a person's status if that person is here illegally. they are not sure if they will hear that case. they meet with the prime minister of the white house and it comes before the u.s. troops leave iraq. here is more facing the two leaders, scott? >> reporter: there are about 6,000 u.s. troops remaining in iraq as of this morning and they are scheduled to be

withdrawn no later than new year's eve. president barack obama and prime minister al-maliki will be meeting and iraqi forces are still being developed. u.s. military leaders say they had no choice other than to make a full withdrawal to give them immunity by the iraqi justice system. >> we did not believe it was appropriate, broad den to leave servicemen an women without judicial protection with some of the challenges it has and an immature judicial system. >> with the prime minister of iraq and president barack obama will join a press conference from the white house shortly

there after. they are now taking money from the pockets of mill tear moms and homeowners. they have discovered $300 million missing after unauthorized transactions and they say it was for overseased care packages and veterans in local shelters. they attached skimmers to some of the credit card machines stealing thousands from unknowing customers. a man who was kidnapped last july is expected to be reunited with his family. his mother and a cousin were visiting relatives in the philippine when they were all kidnapped. they allowed them to go but kept kevin he told his captors he was going to take a bath in the river and instead he ran.

>> we missed you and we can't wait to see you. >> kevin was flown to manila where his father and mother will see him. they kidnapped him and would not say if any ransom was kept for kevin. they will reduce service and they will operate with too fewer round trips from now and until april 1st. the ferry will a dust from this as well but the week days will stay the same. these changes are made as a way of saving money. sal has news chopper 2 overhead, how does it look for

traffic? >> we have trouble getting through this area and through chopper 2, some of them have split off they have gone and 7th street and a pack of protesters, another group of them are now on middle harp bore and they are -- harbor and they are now lining up to get into the port. we also have some pictures from our ground crew, you can see all sorts of signs and our reporters are there now gathering more information talking to people trying to find out the way they are doing part of a national day of occupy they plan to block the west coast ports and that's what they are trying to do now but it is not affecting any of the freeway traffic and we will keep you posted on what it is doing to the port. the bay bridge toll plaza is

backed up for a 10 minute delay and this is a pretty normal commute. santa clara still looking good on 101 and palo alto heading south, that looks good, steve and i have been telling you the roads are wet and steve will tell you more about the whether or coming through. >> we can use a lot more this week. this is just a whole hummer, temperatures are in the 40s but when you see the light green there is not much, a couple of 100th out of this, napa, san rafael, livermore 45, not much of a difference there.

it pulled the ads after the evangelical show said it threatens american values. now a senator said he will call for a boycott if lowe's does not reinstate the ads. he will be getting a pay raise january 1st, why the city's new minimum wage is making history. and charging jail inmates for their stay behind bars. it a police police are now lining up blocking the protesters from together something on the scene. we will let you know what happened coming up. of action. you have seen some police officers moving the place, we do have several crews and maybe about 300 protesters, we are just approximating, carrying signs intent on shutting down the port of oakland, let's go back to the desk. >> we are ready, we are actually looking at the protesters here and it seems like the police have formed a line. now i am looking at news chopper 2 and do you see police officers at the top, just a few moments ago they got into a line and appeared to be blocking these protesters from moving any further. this is near 7th and maritime

at the ports and we did see the line of trucks strike to get into the port and they have essentially surrounded them. let's go back to pam. a california county is taking down soaring jail costs. riverside county started the plan in response to realignment. that is the concern and they say they will direct $6 million a year for their jail stay. inmates with no access will not be able to pay. time now, we are expect told find out whether the state will have to make more cuts to public education. on thursday, governor jerry brown will find out how much they are short with the revenue

lawmakers predicted california will have earlier this year. if the shortfall is $1 billion there will be cuts to public education including public education including k through 12 schools. let's go back to sal, sal, what are you seeing in the port of oakland? >> well we have two crews, kraig debro and tara moriarty both have their crews out there and we also have news chopper 2 looking at the march and protesters have left the west oakland bart station which have marched and taken them to the port of oakland and they have split into groups. they appear to be marching and again this is part of the

movement to shut down the ports and the seattle port right now we see in oakland, protesters appear to be marching in a circle and heavy line of police presence, a lien of police officers have stepped in between the marchers to keep them from getting into the port. we will keep you posted and let you know more about this as mornings on 2 continues. it is already a very busy morning, our time now is 6:29, we say good morning to you. it is monday december 12th. of course we have been watching it unfold right here, occupied protesters are trying to shut down one of the busiest ports in the united states. it is a situations that changing by the minute and we want to check in with tara

moriarty, tell us where you are and what you are seeing. >> reporter: we are in front of 30 and 33 and police have just arrived and threw themselves into the midst of all these protesters and there are hundreds of them, do you see those flashing lights and we imagine there will be some sort of a confrontation soon. there is a doesn't group -- decent group and they were chanting, moving signs trying to shut down the port. you can see big risk are lined up and they will not be allowed, but they are suited up in riot gear they are primed to step in at any minute, long shore are not officially backing the shut down many are complaining they couldn't get paid because they couldn't do their job. >> we all have to give up

something in this protest. some of us will have to give up paychecks. some of us don't have paychecks to give up. each of us will make our own sacrifice to change this government. we have a corrupt system and we need change. >> now thousands have shut them down and they say they will hold out a full 24 hours and these protesters seem to be very relaxed right now they are banging on drums walking around in circles, they have their signs out and again police have just arrived on scene and we will walk out see exactly what is going on. but for the moment, this is not the omar rally going to be taking place. a 5:00 we will march back out

here again. live in oakland ktvu channel 2 news. >> occupied demonstrators in san jose attempted to shut down the west coast place. they will be there for a march and rally. now early yesterday morning 55 occupied protesters were arrested for sleeping on the sidewalk outside the federal reserve building. they gathered there after the main occupied camp at justin herman plaza was broken up. they were given a warning after being told they weather would be subject to -- they would be subject to illegal lodging. and in san francisco, oakland makes the occupied berkeley camp largest right now in the bay area. this tent city at civic center

park went up two months ago and now it is growing by the day since many local occupied protesters have nowhere else to go. they have as many as 100 tents as well as a large dining area. they are looking for the person responsible for a deadly shooting kill a four-year-old boy. it is 815 saturday night. one of them died at the hospital and the second was released. detectives believe it is gang related and they are confident an arrest will be made soon. and the cal campus will reopen at 7:30 this morning. it was shut down because of a diesel fuel spill. a tank overflowed on saturday and released 1,700 gallons of

fuel. some of that fuel flowed into nearby strawberry creek. some of the fuel also ended up in the san francisco bay. >> it appears the amount that was released into the creek. it didn't have a significant impact on wildlife but we want to confirm that. >> that fuel spill caused a problem and the epa is now involved in the cleanup efforts. let's check in with sal castaneda. we are keeping up with occupied protesters and also the traffic and the first thing we will do is show you a live picture of the occupied protest here from news chopper 2. psych it looks like -- you can see it looks like 3 or 400 people and we will get a better count from tara and kraig down there who

might have something more accurate and it looks like they are marching at the port of oakland and this is from our ground crews which started at west oakland bart and walked down to the port of oakland intend on shutting down on business as usual for the occupied movement. they will be in southern california according to them. police are here, they have lined up and they appear to be trying to keep the protesters from getting into the port and it is unclear if any of the truckers are behind the line so it is unclear if any of these guys and gallons driving the trucks will be able to get in and conduct their business. it is more than a half hour ago as we saw them in the west oakland bart steaks and news

chopper -- bart station and news chopper 2 tells us more officers are arriving at the port of oakland and all of them appear to have their riot helmets on a long with their bat tons so we will stay and we have two reporters on the ground and we are trying to find out more about what will happen. some light rain coming in and this is a system for this month, we need snow up in the mountains, a friend of mine runs cattle and he said steve, we are worried here, we need some rain to get the grass growing. this system will not do much. this is just throwing in a few showers overall it will be a morning event and then it is out of here. light rain in the morning, more fog forming into tomorrow but we will get a break.

span the entire white house and you can see them vanning the packages and loading them. the back door is open and they will it be going across making their delivery. we have a senior manager here in oakland and what do you account for as more packages being shipped this year compared to last year? >> well we think it is a sign of the economy trying to turn around and people are getting out earlier to make sure their gifts get out. >> how many people do you have here working? >> well we have 75 people who are regular people here and this morning we will probably be here until 7:45 so we sort and then start going out to make deliveries. >> and nationwide to help with all sheets packages, the company had to do a lot more

hiring? >> yes we did. we brought in 20,000 employees to help with the unexpected volume and this year we are expected about 17 million packages to pass through our systems worldwide. >> and there were 20,000 people hired to deal with the packages circulating this month? >> that is correct. >> and now it will continue like this and there will be a lot of activity up until christmas eve and the manager said they will be doing some christmas day deliveries as well. we will continue to stay here and we will check back later on the show. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. many people are homeless after a fire and many say they didn't hear a thing. truckers at the port of oakland stopped because of a

. time now 644, our top stories right now our top story at the port of oakland, you are looking at live pictures from news chopper 2, protesters from occupied and a lot of riot police. occupied protesters are trying to shut down one of the busiest ports in the united states and this is a situation changing every minute. ktvu channel 2 news' kraig debro is there and what is happening kraig? >> reporter: it turns into middle harbor behind me and you can see a row of 18 wheelers as far as the eye can see and there is a huge row there and these truckers are at a standstill. on the other side of the intersection there is a little bit of movement and we will find out if they are able to get into their ports but if you

look here, the situation is about the same. we have been talking to truckers about this protest and a lot of people have made the observation that they are shutting down a job site which is hurting regular working people. they are moving at the west oakland bart station marching here one at 5:30 one at 3:00 in the afternoon and they are trying to blockade west coast ports to do that because of the wealth -- wealthier americans are not trickling the money down well enough. and now both support the movement here and they are torn

about the movement. how do you think this might be helping you? >> well somebody has to wake up. this is for everybody but somebody has to wake up. >> i believe -- i think there are ways of doing it and this is a start, this is a base ground for people to start and maybe work from this point. it gives a new avenue of what might work better. >> reporter: now there is a heavy police presence from just about ten minutes ago and what i believed to be members of the oakland s.w.a.t. team, they looked like they had an armored vehicle and they are looking to see if there is any turbulence. there are two other reasons protests are going on today, one they are protecting solidarity with long shore men in washington and they have

been having problems there and some truckers down in the l.a. area people feel they have not been able to unionize and there are other reasons and of course we will be following this all morning long and all day long. reporting live kraig debro ktvu channel 2 news. >> make sure you stay with us for the occupied port protest and we will have that top story from ktvu channel 2 news. >> that fire began early saturday night at an apartment building and everybody made it out of the building and some say they never heard any fire alarms. they also said the see rent was the -- siren was the first clue that something was wrong.

is a lot of activity affecting the port of oakland and protesters are not allowing any of the trucks drive through here and so far police have been forming a line and there are no direct confrontations of any huge significance as you can see. and at the bay bridge, it is a normal commute backed up for about a 20 men delay. also it looks good on the peninsular, it is still a nice drive to fremont although it is getting slow on the way to fremont. let's go to steve. cloudy skies and light rain, this is a weak system that will be with us for the morning, and actually we have some pretty good rain, we have a counterclockwise motion and there is a lot of drying on the edge tonight.

. welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 news looking at the big board, dow jones industrial average down 150 points, it is almost 4% s&p 500 is going down with it and it is down more than 1% and the 4th quarter will not be as good as expected. sal? right now dave and pam of course we have been following the occupied march which has started at the west oakland bart station and several hundred protesters came from there a couple hundred at least, this is near pier 56 and oakland police are there as

well. a couple have split off trying to block access for truckers in and out of the port of oakland and these are pictures from the ground, protesters seem to be lining up, police are there and so far we have not seen any major confrontations except for police officers keeping them from going further into the port. they have several crews at the scene and we will let you know more coming up. we have a month that has been too dry, this is not much but we will be out of here in the next couple of hours, temperatures will remain in the mid-50s. one man took over pg&e one year after the deadly san bruno
