we have the video of the first people leaving. we have scott olsen who suffered a head injury, he suffered a skull fracture on the 25th of october. this is the first time we have seen him back out here with the people of occupy, taking part of this. they said they are trying to shut down a port. they started this morning from bay area occupy groups. to shut down all ports from alaska to san diego. and caught in the middle of is port of oakland. i spoke with a woman bout this and said there are 99% people, the people who work for the port that can't get into work today. this is what you said to say. >> if it's for the greater good sometimes i have to swallow and take that and i would hope he would feel that way.

riddle with -- eric rasmusson. >> reporter: i want to show you what we are seeing. the crowd made it over the bridge. coming into middle harbor road. we are on the front end as the crowd makes its way into the port. this is a repeat of this morning. i talked to the longshoremen union. a spokesman told me none of the workers have been asked to report for the second shift tonight, that starts in a hour because of the protests and there is still no easy answer as to whether they support this protest or not. >> reporter: they backed up trucks and for a while slowed down business. erators shut down many unions opposed but still allowed members to carry out on their own. >> my union didn't openly endorse this. we did want work today. the 52 guys we had took the day

off. >> they say 150 of 200 workers could not get to their jobs because of the morning wave of protests and were allowed to go home. by mid-day officials were painting a brighter pictures. >> operations are back up and happening and workers are able to work at each one of the terminals. >> reporter: they wouldn't get more specific than that. while we observed trucks going in and out, some terminals were locked up. despite picket signs, some drivers told us occupy protestors are missing the mark. >> when you vote that's how you change things, by voting. not by coming into the streets. >> live here that port of oakland, you can see the large of protesters making its way on to the port right now. the port of oakland senerates $460 million a year. protesters, many of them feel

like the business of the 1% is done here at the port. we are watching to see what impact the latest wave of protesters has and we will bring you more at 6:00. live at the port of oakland, ktvu channel 2 news. >> let's go from the ground now, live pictures from news chopper 2, over head. you get a sense how big this is. we are estimating there are more than a thousand protesters, several thousand protesters. to set the table, many gathered at frank ogawa plaza this afternoon and then they started marching, first heading to the west oakland bart station, from there to the port of oakland. right now they are at third which is close to the port of oakland. they are trying to shut down port operations. there is debate about whether they were successful earlier today. the port said things were still

to go. >> reporter: gearing up from head to toe for round two of port protests. dozens of sheriff's deputies were ready, headed off for another potential face-off with protesters. the police chief described the demonstration as peaceful with just two arrests. a ktvu camera was there when they were brought to the police station. >> this was done in order to keep the port operational. we will continue to have a presence that port. >> the port may be open but there isn't much work getting down. lines of truckers sat idle wondering why police didn't do more. >> not enough. they could have cleared the paths and let us go through.

trucks waiting to get in. that has been the case all day long, though the port says it's open, not a lot of work getting done here today. noelle walker, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we can expect that line or those lines to continue. more live pictures. this is the reason why the drivers are essentially stuck. a large crowd headed for the port of oakland. their goal, to disrupt port facilities. we have been monitoring this crowd. while it is large, thousands of people, it is not the size we saw last month. however they did manage to disrupt operations at the port of oakland this morning, they are again trying to do that. we also learned a short time ago that those longshoremen that are scheduled to work have been told not to report.

so essentially the protesters are claiming victory tonight. occupy protestors converged on another port, many ports long the west coast. in oregon, hundreds of demonstrators locked arms, prompting the closure of two terminals. police arrested two people in the area. the suspects claimed they were heading to the protest. in washington state, protesters blocked a train track today and managed to delay a train. police moved in to arrest those who refused to clear the tracks. elsewhere, port workers were sent home. for our coverage it continues online throughout the newscast and also continues on our website, go to www.ktvu.com, we will be updating our top story. serious warning for women in san francisco following two

sexual assaults. ktvu's david stevenson tells us what people are doing to protect themselves. >> the assault happened on this treat but began around the corner. police shared with us how they are trying to find the suspect as residents reacted. >> i heard that they were violent. really early in the morning. >> women said they are taking steps to protect themselves after two sexual assaults. >> we heard it from a friend that messaged everybody on facebook and another friend at work put a message out. >> reporter: san francisco police say women walking in the mission district were sexually assaulted and robbed. the latest victim was attacked thursday morning. >> this is one that has taken

50 years to life. the 44-year-old says he was high on drugs and angry about being forced to play child support. the u.s. supreme court is stepping in to the fight over arizona's immigration law. they have decided to review a federal appeal's court ruling that blocks several protitians in the law. one of them requires police while enforcing other laws question a person's immigration status if they suspect they are in the country illegally. obama administration argued regulating immigrating is the job of the federal government. officials said the federal deficit is expected to shrink. the budget office estimates the government is on track to run

an annual deafsult below $1 trillion. the deficit for the first two months is $55 billion lower than last year. the numbers could change if congress extends the sotes security tax cuts. fedex workers have been busy today. today is expected to be the biggest day for shipments in fedex's 40 year history. with online shopping, they are protecting they will move 17 million shipments by the end of today. during the season, the company is expecting a 12% increase compared to last year. it hired 20,000 seasonal workers to help handle the increase loads. we will be right back, we are continuing to follow that protest heading towards the

protestors joined in this day of action by targeting big banks. ktvu's robert handa is live to tell us more. >> reporter: we are that occupy san jose event. as you can see the group is joined by a number of other groups. occupy san jose wanted to show solidarity with other groups but there are no ports here so that rallied at wells fargo and bank of america to join the common theme. occupy san jose got an offer of amnesty by the city but only if the protesters agreed not to camp there for two years. joining me is shawn of occupy san jose. what do you think about that offer? >> i think that the people -- their individual choices but we shouldn't take it because the "o" in occupy is intense and we are not camping we are

occupying. the group plans to stay here for another hour. what occupy san jose does at city hall is still being decided. robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco police are watching occupy protestors. this morning officers manned fences outside the federal reserve building. over the weekend police arrested 55 people for sleeping outside the same building which is around the corner from justin herman plaza. no one was hurt. the city broke up the encampment last week. >> in berkeley, the largest encampment in the area. 100 tents in the past two months. police have been called there 24 times for issues ranging from animal bites to fights. some of the victims haven't

been cooperative. despite our rain and cold temperatures in the area there is concern about the lack of snow fall in the sierras. little, if any snow has stuck. region wide snow levels are at 17% of average for this time in december. even without the natural snow fall, 7 resorts were open over the weekend with man made snow. time to talk about our weather. let's check in with our chief meteorologist bill martin. >> temperatures outside on the chilly side all day. low 50s. there were a few sprinkles today. accumulation light. towards the south of california, south of the bay, scattered showers. showers spinning around from the south to the north. rotation is like this, coming up the valley, low is moving south. we could see a sprinkle or two overnight tonight but that's

are ready to take over the port of oakland. they are doing this as part of taking over the ports through the the west coast, alaska, san diego, this is round two of this. happened last month when the people came out here and stopped shipments from leaving the port, coming in and going out. that's what they want to do again. you can look at pingtures. you -- pictures, you can see them. we can come back out here live, this is the second faction of it. there is at will he 500 people out here. it's been peaceful, no problems. we are continuing to march with them. no issues whatsoever. there were problems earlier today but for the most part the mayor said she gives these people the right to march, march peacefully but she also has to protect the people of

in the building basement you could still smell the odor. we learned the generator diesel fuel system passed a test monday but failed saturday night. >> there was some sort of misfunction that caused the fuel to overflow. >> reporter: league leaking down to this -- leaking down to this room. these pumps discharged 1300 gallons of spilled fuel into strawberry creek. agencies are now investigating. some fuel made it to the bay. >> light sheen. just a little residual. >> reporter: booms near the berkeley marina appear to be containing the spill. several hundred gallons may remain under the city of

berkeley. there is a potential, a potential for contamination and even explosion hazard. reporting live, john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. the coast guard said booms used to contain the oil from a sunkal tugboat. it has been docked for the past 10 years. it began sinking yesterday and leaking fuel into the bay. no wild life has been effected so far. >> the wind was with us and the oil stayed within the dry dock and we be three layers of boom. we have seen no oil anywhere else. >> the coast guard also placed a boom around brooks island. it's believed 300 gallons of fuel spilled. the boat will be pulled off the bottom of the harbor and then torn apart. mitt romney says newt gingrich is now the

part little work was being done and little work is being done there tonight as well. earlier we showed you a long line of trucks waiting to get in. some of the truckers are very upset saying they are losing money. they don't get paid if they don't get in and they have payments like everyone else and they are losing money by this demonstration. these, now, live pictures of the protesters. right now they are on middle harbor road next to the port in front of eagle marine services. so far no arrests tonight. there were two arrests earlier today but none this evening and things have been going fairly smoothly, no problems. there is always some concern that once the sun goes down that's when things tend to happen. there are police, you can't see them but there are police keeping an eye on things. so far everything has been

peaceful. you see there are lot of trucks all lining up to get inside. there was one quote from a trucker saying i am losing money, i have a truck payment, insurance payment, just like everyone else, although there are other workers who are very supportive of this demonstration that is going on right now. we are keeping an eye on it, we have reporters keeping an eye on it. a pleatical group is launching a new television ad attacking the obama administration for its ties to solyndra. the group cross roads is calling the obama administration's half a billion dollars loan garn to solyndra an example of croneyism in the white house. the administration defended the move saying it postponed immediate bankrupt for the

happeningright now protesters taking their message right to the port of oakland. and those who conduct business in the nation's fifth busiest port just a few minutes ago this crowd of protesters arrived there at the port and just as they did this morning they managed to slow down operations there. you see there people with drums. i was there last month when they did the same action and it was almost a concert atmosphere. just as last month they started getting on top of the trucks. we have seen a line of trucks, no indication of any activity like that, but there are some truck drivers who are up set and say they are losing money over what the protesters are doing. take a look. there are some of the truck

drivers stuck in the middle of the demonstration. you heard from the mayor earlier in the newscast. she was begging the protesters not to take this action, taking about the economic fall out this could have. we have been following this protest all day long and live pictures right now of the activity taking place at the port of oakland. this gives you a new perspective of how large of a crowd it is. hundreds of people, many of them carrying signs, all of them wanting to send a message to those doing business at the port, many argue they are suffering because what is happening, we will be following this, go back to this protest as soon as we learn more about exactly what is transpiring here. mean time, occupying the fifth largest port is causing delays. ktvu's consumer editor tom

vacar joins us live now with the dollars and cents of today's slow down. >> a case of serious consequences. >> reporter: the port of oakland was quit, way too quit. with three of the seven terminals closed, few trucks waited. not the usual 4,000 rigs. those the occupiers were gone the damage was already done. >> takes us for one day shut down, it will take us two weeks to recover. >> reporter: today it's a major cargo terminal that port. they handle imported good for major retailers across the country. >> there is a lot of merchandise that will be delayed. >> reporter: protests are giving the port a bad name with shippers. >> the port of oakland is called a discretionary port, which means that customers

today they showed us a 10,000 cashier's check left on their door step. >> my mom -- >> reporter: family and friends have been protesting outside the hospital for weeks. they claimed the hospital misdiagnosed her condition in 2009 and allowed a tumor to get out of control. they saidarve their chemotherapy failed they took her to a clinic in texas and now wants kaiser to adopt the new treatment plan. >> i want kaiser to know there is hope and they should allow us -- they should pay for that. >> reporter: in a letter kaiser called the treatment unreliable. the family continued to pay out of pocket and then the bag appeared. >> somebody listened to us.
