it's something we haven't seen in the past 24 hours -- truck drivers actually moving into the port of oakland. but are protesters done just yet? it's a popular place to take kids for pizza and fun. now some restaurants are accused of violating child labor laws. well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2" i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. we're following developing news in menlo park. firefighters are on the scene of a house fire. it's on ringwood avenue. allie rasmus joins us live with a look at what's happening at the scene. >> reporter: well, this is a single family home that caught fire on ringwood in arlington. this is right across the street

from menlo/atherton. there are several dozen firefighters still making their way onto the property. it appears the fire is out for most part. there was a family inside when this fire started.

however, this time of year, we always think about heaters and -- overheating. >> there was a grease fire earlier in the evening on the stove. it could be that grease fire was an extension of this fire. but we're not sure. >> reporter: you can see here with all of the fire trucks that this street you are look at, this is ringwood this is closed off to traffic, about a mile stretch of it. this street runs right parallel to menlo atherton high school. this street is gonna remain closed as firefighters finish up their work for -- for the next 45 minutes or so. we'll bring you an update later on in the show.

allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. thank you. 7:02. we're also following overnight news from the port of oakland. just hours ago, the occupy protesters have managed to block those showing up for their shift. what's happening now? here's tear tara moriarty. >> reporter: it's something we haven't seen or heard for 24 hours, trucks making deliveries, honk, waving. yesterday morning trucks were at a standstill, not able to get through. they had just received word that the 3:00 a.m. shift at the port had been shut down. companies that operate this berth told longshoreman not to

report for work. protesters say some sacrifices have to be made for one day to benefit the 99% in the long run. >> occupy oakland called for action. and a lot of people are jumping to be out here. >> reporter: that protester traveled from denver to be here this morning. now, 3,000 dren straighters began to -- demonstrators began to -- to march. everyone has left here from the ports but this is the second time the protesters have shut down the port of oakland. coming up we'll tell you about the next big event that protesters have planned. that's coming up at 8:00. live from oakland, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. meanwhile the chronicle is reporting that the movement is

that's 31. east-northeast san jose, a little puff of a southeast at sfo. there is a little -- there is enough of a breeze to keep some of that fog out of here but the rain really begins to pick up in southern california. i mean, they are getting a lot down there. we're not getting much at all. a little system might clip us on thursday for some rain. some of the forecast models are saying it looks like wind. it's a cold start, patchy fog. when you get low in the 20s, it's hard to get above 52, 53 unless you get an easterly breeze or northerly breeze. 53 alameda, oakland. antioch, brentwood, pleasanton. san jose the warmest, along with santa cruz and 55, redwood side. i think i saw 29 woodside.

will be sunny. we had our little system but it's been a powerhouse in southern california. big bear lake. there were numerous reports of waterspouts which are funnel clouds near la jolla but the snow continues, so they are getting snow there on the grapevine. as you know that causes all sorts of problem. it's still raining there. if have you any travel plans, l.a. and san diego you might want to wait one day and snow in the mountains. it is 7:16. four soldiers are dead after two army helicopters crashed in washington state. the army says the helicopters were on a training mission last night at joint base lewis mcchord south of tacoma. investigators are still trying to figure out if the aircraft collided or if they crashed

separately. president obama has formally asked for the up manned surveillance drone but the administration says it's not hopeful roip will comply. the drone was captured last week by iran's armed forces. iranian officials say they are close to recovering data from the drone. house and senate negotiators say they've made a change to a defense spending bill? order to avoid a threatened presidential veto. president obama had said that he would veto the legislation if provisions requiring military dud of terror suspects were not changed the new bill makes it clear that the -- that the fbi has the ability question terrorists. but it's not clear if that change is enough for a veto. leon panetta is in afghanistan. he made an unannounced visit. had -- this is lee on panetta

arrive -- leeon panetta -- leon panetta. time now, 7:17. happening right now, this morning congress holds its first hearing in the penn state sex abuse scandal. in fact, we're looking in live right now at the hearing. we've been watching it where some members of congress are proposing it to protect -- some members of congress are expected to get some very dramatic testimony from an abuse survivor. let's get back to the hearing woman. one of the first witnesses this morning is gonna be former nhl player and he will be

testifying about the abuse he suffered. he wrote a book about it called "why i didn't say anything" and has become a spokesman for abuse survivors. congress is considering legislation that all states require that anyone who sees or knows about a crime to report it. right now, only 18 states have those mandatory reporting laws. california is not one of them. california senator barbara boxer is gonna be testifying about a bill to change that. there's a push to withhold federal funds for institutions to be covering up abuse. we'll have more coverage coming up in about an hour. we're live in washington, d.c., alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:19. a preliminary hearing for jerry sandusky is over this morning. san dusk ways with -- sand

instructors will join darrell steinberg in sacramento. he's introducing a bill to create a free online library of digital textbooks that are used in many lower division colleges. the mount diablo school board may adopt a qualified budget at their meeting today. budget reports are categorized as qualified if a district may not meet financial obligations. the mount diablo budget would show the district might not be able to pay its bills through 2014. the board is looking to increase 4 million to increase its contract for solar power. 7:20. we're shivering here in the bay area. up next as we -- look at these live pictures, steve is coming back. he will tell us if there is a

canada has pulled out of the proto honda on climate change. they say that will not solve the crisis. canada's withdrawal comes just days after almost 200 countries agreed to work on a new deal to assign a new treaty to replace the first one that runs out of the end the year. by pulling out, canada will save what would have been about $14 billion in lines for not meet the regulations of that

the jersey sandusky child molestation case. he -- jerry sandusky child case molestation case. our reporter is standing by in pennsylvania to tell us how this decision keeps his accusers from testifying, at least for now. good morning, dave. >> reporter: good morning. a lot of people this morring checking their hearing in a packed courtroom it was aflowbsed -- it was announced that the defense announce ed would like to -- announce ed would like to -- announced he would like to waive the hearing. it was expected today that 11 witnesses were gonna testify. many of them were the alleged victims of jerry sandusky. a few moments ago, his attorney spoke explaining it was a 51-49 decision to decide not to proceed with the hearing. the next significant date is january 11th the at that time there will be an rainment for

we'll show you the live picture. you can see there's no more flames. there's no more smoke. there is a political bit of steam coming from the top of the house. firefighters are still out there here starting their investigation into how all of this started. let's show you video from the closeup of the house. the red cross is out here tenning -- helping -- is out here helping the homeowner. he was inside when the fire started. he got out safely. he's not hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation. but firefighters found out that yesterday, there was a small grease fire on the stove of the home. the homeowner was able to put it out himself. but sometimes the grease can continue burning in the vents above the stove and they found out the same thin that can happen when you use your fireplace a lot. the same thing that can -- can

happen with chimneys. >> it's important to keep your chimney clean. >> reporter: the fire spread throughout the attic. you can see where some of the fire burnt through the home. now, the homeowner tried to call 911 but by the time he was -- by the time he relationized his fire -- luckily, a passerby called here. you are look at firefighters just hosing off their equipment. there is an investigation underway. this street you are looking at is ringwood. near arlington. we want to mention that this street runs parallel tole the -- parallel to the school.

live in menlo park, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:34. a bicyclist accused of killing a bicycle in san francisco is due in court today. police say 23-year-old randall ang was riding his bike at mission and the embarcadero when he ran a red light and hit a 63-year-old -- old woman. she fell and hit her head. prosecutors say there was no evidence that the bicyclist was drunk or drugs. if convicted, he faces a maximum sentence in year -- a maximum year sentence in jail. cuts come after california failed to meet a $4 billion projected increase in tax revenue. public keaks faces the chargest cuts the uc and scu systems could lose $100 million each. and community college fees could go up $10 per unite.

7:54. the chp investigating a big crash last night involving eightby rigs north of los angeles -- eight big rigs north of los angeles. it happened in the truck tunnel near state route 14. now, that crash caused the traffic to back up for miles. at least three peel were treated for minors. fortunately nothing ruptured.

we want to check in again with sal and see what's happening on the roads. we're gonna go right outside and look at some of these live pictures that we have for you. westbound bay bridge, the traffic is backed up as you drive out to -- towards san francisco. if you are gonna be getting into the city you can sigh most bridges are doing well. out to a live look at oakland right in front of the coliseum. traffic looks good there northbound and southbound. this moving, if you are trying to get into the silicon valley -- silicon valley, southbound 101 looks pretty good. southbound 280 if you are gonna go to stanford. right now traffic is a little bit heavy in that area. a little bit of fog, around point reyes lighthouse. just a little patchy fog.

we're back with allie rasmus. she has more information on this fire. >> reporter: it's a single family home that caught fire. you can see firefighters are still out here on the scene but this fire is put out so there's not much danger around the surrounding hole. the temperature that lived here noticed the fire, he -- we saw

what looked like black smoke. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. but firefighters found out that yesterday there was a small grease fire on the stove. the homeowner put the grease fire out himself but firefighters say sometimes that grease can continue to burn up inside the vents above the stove. they explained, something for people to have -- sog for people -- something for people to keep in mind is you use your fire place a lot.

>> it's very important to clean your chimney. >> reporter: the homeowner was abe to get out safely. he tried to call 911 but the fire had already taken out his electrical system. there were pedestrians walking by who noticed the fire. the hole is going to have to be turned -- torn down. this street is closed off to traffic as firefighters continue to clean up their work. ringwood is shut down. it's right next to menlo ather ton high school. if you are trying to get to this area, you may have traffic troubles to deal with.

[ sirens ] this is new video into the ktvu newsroom. it shows the aftermath of this. police say one to three men armed with a machine gun opened fire this morning in the city's center. it's believed the men also threw several grenades at a bus shelter. police say one of the attackers is now dead of the moltive is not known but officials say they had records. 8:03. well, back here ats hole, the trucks are rolling again at the -- tara moriarty has more. >> reporter: well, longshoremen

shipments. protesters and even some lock shoremen told us that sacrifices have to be done once a day to benefit 9%. the next big event that occupy protesters up their sleeve is occupy the bay on new year's day. 8:32. occupy demonstrators targeted ports up and down the west coast and last night the protest at the port of seattle got out of hand. just look at this. police used pepper spray breaking up a crowd of about 100 demonstrators. they tried to block the main entrances to the port. several responded throwing paint and other items at the police. they did make at least a dozen
