count of conviction and really treated bonds like anybody you would see in a courtroom. >> reporter: ilston followed sentencing guidelines that gave bonds two years probation, 20 days of home detention, 250 hours of community service and a $4,100 fine. the judge stayed the sentence while bonds attorney appealed his conviction. parella called the sentence a slap in the wrist and quote, almost laughable. bonds exited the courthouse to cheering fans. >> what did we think about the years spent on this prosecution and the resources? that's a question for you and your community. >> reporter: bonds attorney says the appeal of his felony conviction is expected to take at least 17 months. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. the person who spent the most time behind bars in the balco investigation is bonds' friend and personal trainer

swing shift is on right here at the pacific steel and castic company. but federal immigration authorities are forcing the foundry to fire thousands of workers who appear they say to be in the united states illegally. the pacific steel company says it doesn't want this but has no choice. the foundry is hiring 200 employees. some workers have been with the company for more than 20 years. >> it's been a -- it's been a very difficult situation that the company did not invite you know to happen here. >> reporter: the firings are a result of an audit or ice. pacific steel says the audit found that 200 workers had improper documents and is being fired. one worker who is not being

dismissed says that it's been hard for the workers. >> hard working people. >> reporter: pacific steel says it didn't know any of the employees documents were improper. >> some of the documents may not have had the correct social security numbers on them, there's now a system where there's instant verification required, that was not the case when those employees were hired. >> reporter: eug >> reporter: -- ignacio de la fuente is the union leader. >> now our job is to help them any way we can. >> i'm unemployed and i would like to see if i can get a job. >> reporter: the firings do not lead to deportation but it may be difficult for people to find new jobs. rob roth. >> reporter: meantime

california's unemployment rate fell last month to its lowest level since may of 2009. the state employment development says unemployment dropped from 11.7% in october to 1.3%. the state has gained 211,000 jobs since the start of the year. marin county's unemployment rate slipped below 7%. maris -- marin continues to have the lowest unemployment rate. in just the past hour, san jose police released the pictures of the man involved in that officer involved shooting that led to a death this morning. robert handa live with how it has all played out. >> reporter: at this hour police say investigators are still inside working on this officer shooting involved case.

a unit of officers specializes in gang suppression, when they stopped manuel fuentes for carrying an open container of beer. fuentes ran into this home, when officers followed him inside, he took a handgun from his waistband and threw it into a bedroom. at that time valente galindo picked up the gun and pointed it at officers. galindo has an extensive incidents, manuel fuentes is in custody for resisting arrest. late this afternoon someone filed a complaint that triggered action by the independent police auditor and the police internal affairs department. >> reporter: our job is to audit the investigation. we determine if the investigation conducted by internal affairs was fair, was

thorough and objective. >> reporter: the incident is san jose's eighth police involved shooting. >> it's really about not only the tragedy but the wake of distrust that happens in the community after such a tragedy. >> reporter: officials say both homicide and internal affairs investigations are flow underway in the death of valente galindo but could take months. the officer involved was identified as nine year veteran lee casio. robert handa, ktvu news. a man wounded wednesday afternoon in a police involved shooting has died. he ran off and fired at the officers chasing him. the officers returned fire, no officers were hurt. an alleged gang member was sentenced to life in prison today in a shooting that nearly claimed the life of a fremont police officer. 21-year-old andrew barrientos

was convicted of attempted murder in the shooting of officer todd young in august of last year. young spent weeks in the hospital. he was trying to arrest barrientos. a funeral was held for the young oakland boy who was shot during a shooting rampage in oakland. the community is gathering right now to remember harium lawrence and another child victim. >> reporter: today his family had to bury him. the vigil tonight that includes this quilt and balloons is to keep the little boy's memory alive just like his funeral this afternoon. six- >> reporter: hundreds gathered and listens to singers, preachers -- >> invigorate our souls and our minds and our hearts god. >> reporter: and many in fact, community that offered their condolences. >> i would also like to give the condolence from the city of

oakland where i am a public works supervisor. we want you to know that everyone over there says they love -- >> reporter: many stood at the podium trying to express anguish over losing this little boy. our cameras stayed away from the grieving family but many told us how hard this has been to the grieving family. >> he said papa that was my cousin that got shot. is he going to heaven with my grandma. >> reporter: there's been no arrests on the shooting that took place, since that night more than a handful of people were detained but on one related charges. mayor jean quan attended today's nearly three hour service. >> we can stop the killing in oakland, we can give the cycles of violence, cycles of poverty. some people think i'm naive or

stupid of doing this, i don't. >> reporter: hirum's parents don't want someone else to go through the pain of losing someone they love. >> after talking to them at the hospital, they don't want no more violence. >> reporter: this vigil is also being held in memory of carlitos nava who was shot and killed here in oakland this year. he was only 3 years old. we expect this vigil to begin any moment. reporting now in oakland, jade hernandez. the crew on board the bartoff returned to the bay area. that was just one of the happy reunions in alameda this morning for the 120 member crew. during deployment to the pa sirric, the crew intercepted a drug smuggling speedboat. >> we came upon the net we were hoping there was drugs in the net, instead we found five sea turtles. we were able to rescue four of

those sea turtles. one had already perished. >> crew members disposed of that net so it wouldn't snag any more turtles. an update now on a story we've been following all week long. pg & e has agreed to turn the power back on for a half dozen santa cruz county residents who disconnected their smart meters. homeowners tell ktvu they are happy about this news. pg & e says it will estimate the monthly bills based on a customer's history until state regulators decide on an option for homeowners who don't want the smart meters. pg & e says this is a short term solution for a unique situation. there were several new developments today in the effort to get san francisco waterfront ready for the america's cup. ktvu has learned that construction on a new cruise ship terminal is set to begin monday on pier 27. also today san francisco mayor ed lee announced a new deal with the organizers it shifts a new marina south of at&t park. >> this event is moving forward, the cruise ship terminal is going to move

forward. a billion dollars of economic impact is going to move forward. >> reporter: also as expected environmental groups appealed yesterday's approval of the rate's environmental impact report. they say they want more time to review the documents. pg & e has admitted fault, now it's showing off its new safety measures. the new hot stock hits the floor. we're going to look at very cold overnight lows and very dry weather. we'll talk all about that, see you in 10.

court ruled the three-drug lethal injection procedure. executions in california have been on hold since 2006. the state can appeal today's ruling or change the lethal injection procedure after receiving public comment. oakland major jean quan is fighting back today after protesters heckled her during her appearance last night at the commonwealth club in san francisco. they were upset of how the city of oakland handled the occupy movement. >> i think it's interesting that they don't take any responsibility of the violence that's happened as a result of their activity. i think a movement can't grow that way. >> reporter: quan also talked about shutting down two of her facebook pages she said it was hard to manage all three of her pages and decided it was better to just plain tape a single

page. - - b e tter to just manage a single page. just days after taking responsibility for the san bruno blast, pg & e is showing off its latest effort to help prevent gas leaks. tom vacar is live at lake san andres near milbrae where he spoke to the executive who overseas the utilities pipeline. >> reporter: the high pressure gas lines here included the san bruno line rupture, these new valves can quickly shut off the high pressure jet stream. >> if they sense an abnormal event, they can shut down automatically to stop the flow

of gas. >> reporter: just this one valve project in this one location will cost a half million dollars. in total pg & e will do this 228 times. of the 150 miles of major gas miles in populated areas that pg & e hopes to hydrotest has gone 100 miles beyond that. >> this will indeed be the safest gas system in the country. >> reporter: all of this rings hollow for an attorney representing several san bruno victims especially pg & e's recent statement that it accepts full responsibility for the blast. >> a smoke screen, anyone that was there that saw what pg & e did understands that what they did is gave people sounds bites that had no legal significance. >> reporter: if pg & e gets its

way you're going to pay for it at the cost of $25 per year. tom vacar, ktvu. dozens of people met today at the contra costa jewish center. a parent today told ktvu that they are trying to work something out to keep the preschool open until june. the center's gym will stay open. santa was on patrol in oakland this morning with a little help from his team of motorcycle officers. >> these are my elfs, let's go elfs. >> reporter: santa and the police team toured oakland looking for families with children instead of giving out tickets the officers passed out toys to girls and boys they met along the way. >> first i thought something was wrong. but then i saw santa and the police pulled us over. then they said that they were going to give us presents. >> you don't get pulled over by

santa very often. >> the toys were donated by the police drill team. flying is out, driving is in for holiday travelers this year. the company estimates 10 million californians will drive to their holiday destination out of 11.4 million travelers. it's an increase of 2.5% over last year. meanwhile aaa predicts air travel will drop 10%. crews will begin stringing the first strand of cable on the new eastern span of the bay bridge next week. the nearly 1 mile long cable will be made up of thousands of individual steel wires. caltrans says it will release more details about the construction milestone on monday. and for all intents and purposes the bay area weekend is upon us or upon you as it be. and i'll tell you what it's going to be a cold one. it's chilly outside now but not as cold as it's going to be overnight. checking out the reports at the golden gate bridge.

we go right to the live sensor. the winds are gusting at 17. now that's different than what we've been seeing. that's a westerly wind. this is like this. so it's a little bit warmer around the bay right now. and that wind will die down tonight. and the temperatures will drop pretty rapidly. the bay temperatures will be up a degree or two. but those bay area temperatures are going to be very cold tonight. frost back in the forecast, we had a lot of it this morning, we will see a lot of it tomorrow morning. it might be a little valley fog. as long as this high pressure stays put we'll stay in this pattern. these were today's highs. look at santa rosa. look at san rafael, 63. look at the bump in santa rosa. the way the mountains or the topography. that's a big napa and santa rosa, everybody else is a good five to 6 degrees cooler than they were. the satellite loop just has clear skies. it's just plopped downright

over the north of us and that's where it stays. overnight lows when the winds die down are going to be quite cool. especially santa rosa, napa and vallejo. santa rosa was 71 degrees today. they're going to drop down, that's a big drop in temperatures. 30degrees or more between the overnight low and daytime high. a cold tomorrow morning when you wake up. frosty in the inland bay valleys. plenty of it as well, clayton you're flight around morgan hill, you will find it in gilroy as well. frost isn't really a hazard. what happens is you go out to your car, if you're in a hurry, you scrape a little bit to see if you can see through. a lot of times you will give yourself ample time to get that frost off the windshield. tomorrow morning be prepared for it. so give yourself a little extra time because it'll be out there. as we go through the next several days you're going to see temperatures as i mentioned mostly in the 60s, low 60s not as warm as today. five day forecast with your bay area weekend in view. you go out and try to scrape the frost. you're in a hurry and you do a

little hole like this and get the wipers going. so give yourself a little bit of time. >> use the credit card, you just use that. >> you never make the hole big enough. >> not too many people have ice scrapers around here. you don't buy one of those, you don't need it. a gay rights group has gotten the go ahead for a repeal of proposition eight. that's the state ban on same- sex marriage. the group is love, honor cherish. supporters have until may 14th to gather more than 807,000 signatures to qualify for the november 17 ballots in california. voters passed the ban on same- sex marriage back in november of 2008. and it has been the subject of legal challenges ever since. coming up on bay area news at 7:00 on newschannel 36. the death penalty in california faces an uncertain future. why victims rights advocates are angry about a decision from a judge in the bay area. if you saw the occupy
