coverage starts right now, this is ktvu news at 6:00. good evening, i'm heather holmes. and i'm ken wayne. firefighters are still going through the area of a large fire that left dozens homeless. ktvu's patty lee has more on where the firefighters had to help others to save the trapped residents, patty? >> reporter: well that is right, you can see the firefighters are still on scene here, shoring up the safety of this building, still, now some residents are still waiting to be allowed into their apartment so that they can pick up whatever valuables are still together. now you can see from the extent of the damage of the building here, nobody will be allowed to sleep here tonight. off it is not clear when or if residents will be allowed to return. it took just minutes for a small fire to spread through this 18-unit complex. >> we had two floors, six units that were occupied, and six

families now displaced. we're still trying to get a count on that right now. >> reporter: an estimated 60 firefighters, were there just before 11:00 this morning on the second floor. >> as we ran by the actual apartment that was in flames, the guy had a fire extinguisher and was helping. >> reporter: they were where the fire started, he said that neighbors banging on doors alerted him to the blaze before the alarm. >> i open up the door, there was smoke just coming at me, i was like wow, wait, it is not my room, i grabbed my shorts. >> reporter: the firefighters say they had to chase the blaze through dust in the walls, and ended up cutting a hole through the roof, which was so unstable they were forced to retreat. >> typically a fire will double in size every minute, and the fire spread quickly. >> reporter: nobody was injured. but the fate of several pets is still unknown. >> we have one pet still

inside, he is at the very far end. >> reporter: the fire department is still investigating the cause, but a displaced resident told me that the neighbor's heater caught fire and burned through their shared wall. but the focus tonight is on finding families places to stay. and the red cross is here on scene, helping them deal with all the uncertainty during the holiday season. reporting live, alameda, patty lee, ktvu channel 2 action news. and we have developing news tonight out of san francisco, where muni officials say their cable cars on the powell street line are now out of service right now. they say a malfunction caused a disruption on the line at about 4:00 this afternoon, right now muni is providing a bus bridge for the stranded passengers, they didn't say when the line would be up and running. and alameda county sheriff's office says that there will not be a repeat of the problem last week that set a canon ball crashing into homes. the host of the show, myth

busters were there for a packed meeting in dublin, they were shooting a segment on december 6 when a canon ball missed their target, and pushed into two homes, as well as a mini van, nobody was hurt, residents expressed anger over the accident. today, they said that it was beneficial. >> we're not scientists, we're law enforcement professionals. and so the science of this educations our bond people -- each time they conduct one of these experiments. >> the myth buster's executive producer says that they're focused on making things right for homeowners, most of the activities have been suspended during a review of the incident. and today, a marion county medical dispensary closing doors after 14 years, the marin alliance in fairfax was the oldest dispensary, and they were among those targeted by the federal government because

of the closeness to facilities used by children. the residents we spoke to today, supported the club. >> i think they should make it legal, tax it, and stop using law enforcement for this purpose. >> the pot club's owner didn't want to talk about it on camera today, she said in october she was given a deadline to evict the club, or they would face federal seizure of the property. and suspicion of killing geese and ducks, a 17--year-old concord boy was arrested yesterday, taken to the juvenile hall. his name has not been released. from october until just weeks ago, 24 ducks and geese were found shot to death with pellets and small caliber bullets in new hall. a $5000 reward was offered in the case. police have not yet said whether or not anybody will be paid that money. and family and friends gathering in oakland today for funeral services for a young college football player who died much too soon.

as ktvu john sazaki reports, despite having a scholarship, the young man had a serious health issue. >> i stretch my hands. >> reporter: 19-year-old fred thompson is remembered as a big man with a big heart. >> how many people do you know who could bring such a large crowd together at one time. from richland and oakland. >> reporter: he had gone to oregon state on a football scholarship. but 10 days ago he died of a heart attack from a pre- existing heart condition. his team came to say good-bye. >> his face mask was filled with a bright smile every day at practice, and we'll miss >> reporter: the memorial service had plenty of laughter, much of which was courtesy of thompson's grandmother. >> the last time i saw him, he was walking like this. i said baby your feet hurt?

he said no, grandmother, i can't put no wrinkles in my tennis shoes. his high school coach said there was a message. >> remember how hard he stayed focus, and kept the tunnel vision on his goals, the goal was to help his mom and grandmother. >> reporter: thompson's grandmother says the message was critical for his friends to hear. >> to a lot of them, he was the only one that made it through all that. he was the only one that made it through his group that he started with, in richmond. so he was kind of like a hero to them. >> reporter: now his family hopes the death will prompt a greater exact emphasis on heart health in youth. and today, the occupy oakland movement, protesters marking three months since the demonstrations began. ktvu has more in oakland, where the occupiers are threatening to set up camp again. >> reporter: well, the occupy

website instructs the protesters to take back frank ogawa park tonight of . it is very quiet, but this is the third anniversary of the demonstrations, attracting hundreds of people. >> today we are marching in solidarity, with the whistle- blower. >> reporter: since the movement began, occupy san francisco supporters marched every saturday, highlighting an issue. this week the focus is on freeing bradley manning, the suspected source of the largest leak of documents to wiki leak, manning was an army intelligence officer in iraq. >> whether or not he -- is guilty of what he is being accused of, that he is a whistle-blower that is exposing the facts that we need to know. >> reporter: for others today was another day to make sure the movement maintained a visual reminder of the struggles of the 99%, the working class and under privileged in the country. a few hours ago, protesters here in san francisco put up

tents, but didn't use stakes to anchor them. >> it is unfair the city has shut down the occupy camp, and people's right to free speech. and so you know, having tents in the city is not -- something that should be shut down. >> we're still considering this a fluid march, so we make our decisions as they come along. and if it was a permanent structure, i'm sure we would take a different action. >> reporter: they were told the officers would just watch and wait until speakers finished. we're live at frank ogawa plaza in oakland. it is very quiet right now, but we'll continue to monitor the situation, reporting live, oakland, jade hernandez, ktvu news. and the three month celebration turned tense today, police say they arrested about 50 occupy protesters hoping to set up the new camp site on the empty church lot, the trinity church had asked protesters not to trespass on the property. but officials say a dozen

people climbed on to the lots today. and today, retailers cut prices, for super saturday, to help the bottom line, typically, super saturday is the saturday before christmas, but because that day falls on christmas eve, many stores are rolling out discounts soon, it appears many are waiting for them. the average shopper completed less than half of their shopping by december 14th. hayward city officials want you to spend your holiday shopping dollars in their city. and they're putting their money where their mouth is, if you spend more than 100 there tonight or tomorrow you can get a special gift bag. the offer is good for the first 150 people to show their receipts at city hall on monday morning. the gift bag includes two free movie tickets, a southland mall gift card, and gift cards to other local restaurants. and many delivering holiday food bags to hundreds of needy seniors in the east bay, dozens

came to the fire station, bright and early to fill the bags with food. the supplies were purchased with money donated by the berkeley firefighters as well as the community. after all the grocery bags were put together, the volunteers fanned out to deliver the food to low income seniors. >> it is nice because you can spend a few minutes talking to them. and some of them, it is nice to sit down and chat with them and spend quality time. you may be the only visitor. >> and this week they provided food to nearly 800 berkeley seniors. and police in to giving spirit today for this year's shop with the cop event. officers met with dozens of low income children at the police activity league building this morning, before taking them to target, well you saw it there by way of the limo for a 100- dollar shopping spree. the kids were chosen for their leadership and character, and crews spotted some looking for gifts and others, not just for

missing, most of those were sleeping when those were caught in the flood, the floods came after 12 hours of continuous rain in the nearby mountains of the philippines. and the bill passed on the payroll tax cut. the president is pressing congress to do more. president obama has been pushing for a year-long extension of the tax cuts, set to expire january one, the measure will continue the tax holiday for two more months, along with long-term unemployment benefits and a cut in medicare reimbursements for doctors, it included a bill to fast track a decision on building an oil pipeline from canada to texas, the measure would be paid by the fee from family and freddie mac. it was not be excusable for congress to extend this middle

class tax cut . >> the house will act on the bill next week. and police arrest two men, and yet another man in a homicide case this week. michael miller turned himself in on thursday, the victim, 48- year-old jeff patterson was found dead from blunt force trauma on monday. deputies initially arrested a man who was released on monday, a second man was arrested but released without charges. and a registered sex offender accused of kidnapping and raping a woman in oakley now is behind bars. steven clark was arrested around midnight at the cathedral hill neighborhood. the contra costa sheriff's department says he became friends with a woman on saturday, and then kidnapped her and raped her at his home. he had previously been convicted of raping another woman in texas. and san jose police

arresting a woman regarding theft. they say that 28-year-old sandy velazquez claimed to be a friend, and now faces six counts of felony grand theft. >> and more than six hundred kids, parents and one toy room. this week, berkeley started to hand out toys as to give aways. some were anxious to be first in line. >> reporter: they lined up before dawn, in coats and blankets, parents and grand parents waited for hours so the kids could have toys. >> they have a wide variety of toys, teddy bears -- looks like toys "r" us. >> reporter: inside, volunteers organize toys by age group and

gender, outside some parents were anxious to be first in line, and a few arguments broke out. >> they started to tell -- the -- people -- >> reporter: police issued numbered tickets and the crowd calmed down. >> everybody gets something, they don't run out. everybody gets something. >> reporter: police say there are lots of toys to go around. this year they claim to give out 3000, and the donations are up. >> last year was lean, i think this year was normal. >> they really appreciate the volume, and the situations they have. >> reporter: 300 families pre registered to pick up toys for several hundred kids, this mom says by the time she buys clothes for the kid, there is no money left for toys. >> i am really grateful for this hope, the other parents appreciate it as well. >> if i didn't come, my kids wouldn't have anything. so it is a blessing. >> reporter: while their kids end up with the presents, the opportunity to give their child a toy is a gift for the parents

too. in berkeley, ktvu channel 2 action news. and state fish and game officials say a gray wolf in southern oregon is on the move, and may soon cross into california. if it does it would be the first confirmed wild gray wolf in the state since 1924, game officials say it is a male, wearing a gps collar. since the species re-entered oregon since 1929, the numbers there are about two dozen. state fish and game says they expect sooner or later, the gray wolfs will come back in california. and a spare the air alert for the bay area tomorrow, that means burning wood or other solid fuels, wood stoves, as well as outside fuel is banned. tomorrow, the levels will be high and unhealthy for somebody with breathing problems, the very young as well as the elderly. and that sure is a pretty

shot out at the bay bridge, let's look at the weather and air out there. >> whenever you have a stable weather set up, that means the poor air quality will be the concern, the potential spare the air for tomorrow, possibly beyond that as well. for current numbers, cold out there, 40s toward napa, fairfield, san francisco, 50s, san jose at 53 degrees, overnight lows, chilly, the cooler locations in the upper 20s to right at 30 degrees, so napa right at about 30, fairfield, 29, and suspend i san jose in the upper 30s, and patchy fog for the north bay valleys and inland valleys as well to start out near sunday morning. it has been a dry morning, the one exception, not here in the bay area, but down to the south, towards southern california they have rainshowers, still producing rainfall for the second half of the weekend into tomorrow. but actually, into possibly monday. as you can see it has been dry

for december, the first week in december, the second week, a few rain clouds, remember last week, once again, another rain- free forecast, high pressure is in command of the weather, one issue once again, patchy fog, especially for the inland valleys, plenty of sunshine, hazy sunshine in the afternoon, temperatures on track to meet the mid-to-upper 50s. dense fog, concentrated in the central valley, visibility coming down to about 500 feet or less. so be extra careful, driving through the central valley tomorrow. the dense fog advisory beginning at midnight, and in the bay area, patchy fog starting out the day as you can see. partly to mostly sunny skies in the afternoon hours, patchy fog could develop by late tomorrow afternoon. the forecast, as you can see by 7:00. lots of areas in the 30s, hazy sunshine by 12:00, mostly sunny skies, temperatures, we'll trim them down a few degrees from
