a tense situation for most of the day in a new ward neighborhood. >> and for much of the day that s.w.a.t. team surrounded that neighborhood as police there searched for a gunman on the loose. we are live now in that neighborhood with the latest on the investigation and if the suspect was found. alex. >> reporter: no, not found, police were searching for a person involved in the shooting

and they came up empty in that search, it is up the street in a house on olive. new ward police and the union city police department were involved here. also, there was a major crime tasks force from the department of justice involved as well. officers searched the house but they didn't find the people they went in looking for. this stemmed from a shooting around 11:00, a man was shot twice on a street but he survived those injuries. investigators had evidence that led them to a house nearby. we talked to some neighbors forced out of their homes tonight by the swat operation. >> it was a surprise because i never see like this kind of thing. two or three police cars. it is my first time. i have lived here for a while and never seen this kind of violence. >> reporter: the commander

from the newark police department says that the shooting is gang related despite the police presence in the swat operation on this street no arrests have been made but people that live here are back in their home at this hour. live in newark, alex saf vick. a water main break is calling concern in one san pablo neighborhood as there are concerns of a fuel line break. the incident started around 9:30, when crews found the 60- inch water main along with an 8- inch water line broken at fordam street. the trouble is that a kinder morgan fuel line runs through that area and there are concerns that flooding could damage that line. he says right now kinder morgan is trying to perge the line. five homes have lost water and

that the large break should not affect water supplies in other areas. occupy protesters marked a milestone in their movement today. it's been three months since the demonstrations begin and some are still gathered. >> reporter: there is a small group in this park, one ten remains standing, earlier today there was a louder message made. marking the 3rd month of demonstrations, this march attracted five hundred people for one cause. >> free bradley manning. >> reporter: free bradly manning as the supporters rallied in support of him, bradly was defending allegations that he was the source to wikileak documents. he was an analyst that had access to the information. >> whether or not he is guilty

he is accused of and a whistleblower exposing the facts we need to know. >> reporter: the march began along market and steward. marchers made a huge circle ensuring the reminder was here, some demonstrators pitched tents. >> they have shut down the occupy tent and this is the people's right to free speech and being in a city is not something that should be shut down. >> we are considering this a fluid march so we will make our decisions as they come along and if it was a permanent structure, i am sure we would take a different action. >> by night fall tents came down and one supporter described the concept of the movement. >> we look at an ocean wave and say that is a wave but it is not really, an individual part of water each one doing its own theme and it is in concert, a very natural thing. >> the officers in the park where the march ended didn't phase anyone. >> the efforts to stop it it is

sheriff says working with myth busters have been beneficial. >> the science educates our people each time they conduct an experiment. >> the show is focused on making things right for the homeowners and most activities of the bomb range has been suspended during a review of the accident. about an hour ago, san jose police announced that man suspected of killing a hell's angel's member has been seen in the south bay. police say suspect 38-year-old steve ruiz was spotted within the past 24 hours. investigators say ruiz shot toldson in october after an argument during a funeral over another hell's angel's member. anybody know anything call police. a teenager is behind bars on suspicion of killing geese and duck in two local parks. authorities arrested the 17- year-old concord boy yesterday and say he was taken to

juvenile hall. 24 geese were found shot to death in willow pass park. a 5000-dollar reward was being offered. >> a registered sex offender accused of kidnapping and raping a woman in oakley is in jail, 45-year-old steven clark was arrest around midnight in san francisco's hill neighborhood. the sheriff's department said clark befriended a woman at a bar last saturday and kidnapped her and assaulted her. he had been previously convicted of rape in texas and officials say he was spotted in san diego earlier this week but he got away. a san jose woman faces felony charges for a string of jewelry thefts involving grade school students. sonya va last quez went to six

campuses between october and november to find her young victims. she claimed to be a friend and asked to see their gold necklaces and replaced them with costume necklaces. police believe she sold the necklaces to jewelry stores. dozens of people are out of their apartments after a fast moving fire. >> reporter: it took just minutes for a small fire to spread through this 18 unit apartment complex on sure point court. >> we had two floors involved in the fire and six units that were occupied and six families that are now displaced and we are trying to get a count on that right now. >> reporter: an estimated 60 firefighters fought the blaze that started before 11:00 this morning on the 2nd floor. >> as we were running by the actual apartment in flames, a guy had a fire extinguisher and he was backing out. >> reporter: this gentleman lives across the hall from the apartment where the fire

started. he says neighbors banging on the doors alerted him to the blaze. >> i opened up the door and there was smoke coming at me and i was like whoa and i grabbed my shorts. >> reporter: and the firefighters had to chase the blaze through ducts in the wall and cut a hole through the roof which became unstable that they were forced to retrieve. >> a fire will double in size every minute and the fire spread relatively quickly. >> the fire department is still investigating the cause of the blaze but a resident says the neighbor's baseboard heater caught on fire and no one was injured but the fate of several pets is still unknown. >> we have one cat inside but he is at the far end and we are hoping he is okay. >> reporter: dozens working with the red cross to find places to stay in the short- term and it is unclear if or when they will be allowed to return to these apartments. but many will be staying in vacant units in other parts of

the complex tonight. patty lee, ktvt. a medical marijuana dispensary has closed its doors after 14 years, it was in fairfax and the oldest dispensary, among dozens targeted by prosecutors because they are near parks and schools and other facilities used by children. some say the closure was an injustice. >> it would be like me taking pepto-bismol or advil off of the market. people need this for their health and by closing it, you are depriving them of that healthcare that they could be getting. >> the owner did not want to speak on camera, she said off camera that her landlord was given a deadline to do this or he would face federal government penalties. the president is pressing congress to do more. president obama has been

pushing for a year long extension of the tax cut set to expire january 1st. the senate bill will continue the holiday for two months and unemployment benefits and medicare reimbursement for doctors. there's a gop provision to fast track on an oil pipeline from canada to texas and paid for with a fee on mortgages backed by fannie mae and freddie mac. >> while this agreement is for two months, it is my expectation, in fact it would be inexcusable for congress not to further extend this middle class tax cut for the rest of the year. the house is expected to act on the bill early next week. meantime in a statement today california senator supported this tax cut paid for rich americans, he says we should extent these priorities by

>> cal tran crews will shut down a freeways starting at 11:00, all lanes of interstate 580 in liver moore will be closed. crews will spend the night overnight demolishing the flyover. officials hope to reopen the roadway by 8:00 tomorrow. walnut creek police have released two men and arrested another suspect in a homicide earlier this week. police say 22-year-old michael viler turned himself in on thursday. the victim, 48-year-old jeffry patterson was found dead from blunt force trauma at a home on san miguel drive on monday, deputies initially arrested one man released wednesday and a second man was also taken into custody but he was freed without charges. he was a mountain of a

young man and a promising athlete at a pack 12 school but as ktvt reports his life was cut short by a medical condition. >> 19-year-old fred thompson is remembered as a big man with a big heart. >> how many people and young men do you know to bring such a large crowd together at one time? from richmond and oakland and oregon. >> at 6'4" and more than 300 pounds the graduate went to oregon state on a football scholarship but he died of a heart attack from a preexisting heart condition ten days ago. his team came to say goodbye. >> his face mask was filled with a bright smile every day and we will miss him so much. >> the memorial service had plenty of laughter, much of which was courtesy of thompson's grandmother. >> the last time i seen him, he was walking like this and i

firefighters as well as the community and after all those bags were assembled volunteers then fanned out to deliver them to low income seniors. >> it is nice because you can spend a few minutes talking to them and some of the seniors are lonely and it is nice to chat with them and spend quality time because you might be their own visitor that week. the random act food drive provided food to nearly 800 seniors. richmond police spent part of the day making sure the holidays are happy for dozens of low income children. it is all part of this year's shop with a cop event. 40 children were invite to the police activities building this morning where a limo took them to target for a $100 shopping spree. they were chosen by their leadership and character and our crews spotted some of the children looking for gifts for others. and with the holiday season in full swing there are toy drives under way and in 30 minutes what caused a chaotic

scene this morning in berkeley. the republican presidential candidate michelle bachmann is pushing back after ran paul accused her of hating moslems. >> i have never said anything that foolish, the real hate that you hear is coming from the president of iran. >> the dispute was kicked up thursday when the two sparred on u.s. policy with regard to iran, while paul warned against any war with iran, michelle bachmann says it was the greatest reaction in world history. presidential candidate rick perry is drawing pension benefits while still earning his salary as governor of texas. in january perry began to receive retirement benefits worth about $7700 a month. he is still bringing in his 150,000-dollar salary as

governor. some see a double standard as he campaigns against runaway government spending. perry has been on texas' public payroll since 1958 including stints as state representative and agricultural commissioner and lieutenant governor. the des moines register endorsed mitt romney today saying he was the most qualified of the gop candidates. the editor said what they called romney -- cited what they called romney, sobriety, wisdom and judgment and saying he is leader. the editorial board is endorsing candidates since 1988 and since then three of the four republicans they have endorsed have gone on to be the nominee and of those only george w. bush became president. a new poll shows growing discontent with president obama. the poll by the associated press gfk reports 52% of adults said obama should be voted out of office and when the president was matched gather

either of the two republican front-runners, mr. obama had a one percent lead over mitt romney and a nine percent lead over newt gingrich. when asked about the economy, 37% of people responding said they expected things to improve next year. an east bay man that knows a thing or two about cars, crashed him right into a mailbox. the highway patrol says real estate developer ken bearing slammed into the mailbox by his rolls-royce. it happened in the community of black hawk which he helped developed. he helped start the auto museum filled with several rare automobiles. it took more than two hours to pull the rolls-royce free and there's no word on just how the accident happened but the highway patrol says investigators have ruled out alcohol as the cause. secretary of defense leon panetti goes to libya and what made the trip historic and what he had to say about the

drivers in southern california are breathing a sigh of relief after cal tran reopened interstate 60 known as the pa mowna free way, it has been closed since wednesday after a tanker caught fire and that caused problems as drivers were forced on other freeways and there is no word on how long it will take to repair it. officials identified the gunman in yesterday's shooting rampage inside of an office building in owendale, the

shooter is 48-year-old andre turner. police say turner, a southern california edison employee showed up at work and shot four of his coworkers killing two of them before taking his own life. investigators are looking into a motive for that attack. secretary of defense leon panetti made a short stop in libya today. the secretary said the newly formed government had a long transition ahead but confident it would succeed. the four hour trip was the first the american secretary has made to libya. panetti offered u.s. support but no discussion about army aid. >> libya is in the hands of the libyan people. they will chart their future. they will determine what assistance they require from the united states and the international community. >> yesterday the u.s. ruled

back most of the sanctions imposed on the government of libya during gadhafi area and released frozen government assets. hundreds of american troops are in kuwait after leaving iraq. they arrived in camp virginia before they head home. the last combat troops left iraq today, 4474 u.s. service members died since the war started in march of 2003. in other news of the world tonight in the philippines at least 521 people are dead and many more missing after tropical storms hit overnight triggering flash floods, some homes were swept to sea as people slept inside. the storm caught the people off guard. the storm was said to be one of the most ferocious to hit since the 19 70s.

the second day of violence between the military and protesters in cairo. fighting has been there for 48 hours and nine people are dead and many shot to death and more than 300 others are injured. egypt's military is feeling more confident of it's the power in the wake of recent elections. and singing and in celebrations in tunisia, tens of thousands marked the anniversary of the earth spring. it was a year ago that a student set himself on fire in despair after police confiscated his card and his death release add moment that spread to egypt, libya and elsewhere. the singer nicknamed the

diva died in cape verde. >> 's vorra performed without shoots and often spoke during her performances won a grammy in 2004 and put in of orphanage at age ten she was a seamstress but at age 16 a friend encouraged her to sing in bars and her career started and her recording career started in 1988, in ill health in recent years she was forced to retire earlier this year. the president of cape verde has called for national mourning, she was 70 years old. hundreds of parents waited outside in line for hours to be the first to pick out free gifts for their kids. we'll tell you why the situation got a little chaotic this morning. trying to be in the record books, what two salvation army workers had to do for hours.

arm in fairfield. jason perkins rang the bell for more than 57 hours and he did it all for charity. >> thank you, sir. merry christmas. >> this afternoon in san francisco's union square butch ser rana sat down his bell after ringing for 54 hours and ten minutes and 25 seconds. sorinao and perkins were around 24 salvation army ringers taking part in this. today was a big day for retailers. it is called super saturday and that's when stores roll out discounts and rely on heavy shopping volume to make a profit. people have been waiting for the deals. the national retail federation found that average shopper completed half of the shopping by december 14th. drivers in oakland are getting an early gift, the city of oakland is offering free parking today and next saturday to encourage more shopping. drivers don't have to feed the meters but they do have to

stick to the parking time limits. officials estimate the offer will cos the city $125,000 but the city says that loss will be made up with business revenue. law enforcement across the bay area are cracking down on drunk driving this weekend and already arrests have been made as part of the avoid campaign. police in san ra fell set up a checkpoint at 6:00 and between then and midnight officers checked 1440 vehicles and arrested two people on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and 7 people for driving with a suspended license and 12 others for driving without a license. the campaign runs through january 2nd. people in sonoma have two new places to drop off unwanted medications, bins are available at the so knowma hospital on andrews street. it is important to get rid of the medicine to protect the environment and to keep the drugs from getting into the

wrong hands. an oakland man is asking for help to find one of his lost sheep. edward neighbor, he says one of his sheep jumped the fence after a german shepherd got into the sheep pen. they believe the sheep is on the hill. if you find the sheep you are asked to contact animal control. a controversial plan to remodel a lake tahoe resort caused a major hurtle. the people hope this is what it will look like. it was approved the company's 250 million-dollar project to turn the 50-year-old area into a brand new resort and others say it will increase traffic but others say it will be environmental friendly and it begin in 2014. >> snow in san francisco, a

bay area managers have declared spare the air day burning wood inside or outside is banned unless it is your only source of heat, there's 1.4 million fireplaces and wood stoves in the 9 counties and they say air pollution from burning can cause health problems during the winter.

we have been dealing with the dry weather and a very stable weather pattern and the air quality has been coming down a bit and cool numbers and these are the current numbers, santa rosa 37 degrees and napa in the lower 30s right around 33 and napa will be on track to reach the uppers to tomorrow morning. you can see the forecast low of 28. san raffle around 36 and san jose in the upper 30s and we will have patchy dense fog developing in the north bay inland valleys and for the east bay as well especially closer to concord and fairfield. here is the setup. high pressure has been in command of the weather and you will notice the rain showers to the south and los angeles having a wet weekend and so far and into the second half of the weekend and in the bay area it has been dry month so far and you can see the first couple of weeks pretty dry out there and then a couple of rain storms. can't call them storms but a few showers and last week and we are setting up another rain

free forecast and with that some patchy morning fog and overnight lows in the 30s to 40s for most spots and skies becoming partly sunny and 65 degrees and the weather pattern lasting in the next few days and next weekend. as far as the fog, get the stable weather and the dense fog and dense enough that we have a fog advisory in place at midnight for the central and southern san juan valleys. here is the forecast model showing the fog developing, a bit more expansive at 8:00 tomorrow morning and in the afternoon for the most part hazy sunshine and partly to mostly cloudy skies and it is reflected in the forecast beginning tomorrow and you want to bundle up, a lot of 30s and by 12:00 partly sunny and by 3:00 hazy sunshine and the readings in the upper 50s. here is a look at the highs, most neighborhoods coming down a few degrees from today.

san jose the forecast high around 58 and santa cruz at 60 degrees and the raider tomorrow, it will be dry and cool and temperatures in the 50s, around 55 to 56-degree. here is a look ahead at the extended forecast with the remainder of the week end in view, more clouds to start out the day on monday and overall partly sunny for the afternoon hours and fair skies tuesday and wednesday and maybe a few extra clouds by thursday but heather and ken this is the time of year that we talk about in storm tracking mode across the state and also snow in the sierra and nothing to show up over the next -- right through next weekend. it is not officially winter yet. things could change. thanks. some kids in san francisco woke up to a winter wonderland. some of santa's helpers dumped the snow in the civic center plaza. snow hill gave kids a chance to slip and slide and some for the very first time on snow and there was an opportunity to
