mornings on two. it is sunday december 18 it i'm john sasaki in for mike mibach. >> i'm claudine wong. let's get a look at the forecast with steve paulson. >> claudine and john what a pleasure to be here. we do have a little different from yesterday. yesterday parts of the coast, the bay were warm. well the fog has come back. so temperatures there will cool down a little bit. it's still a frosty morning. there is a lot of 30s around. temperatures will be really cold here for awhile. a little bit cooler on the afternoon highs for those that didn't have that easterly breeze yesterday. i know gilroy was 67 yesterday. we'll bring temperatures down a little bit. also by the city was 59 today. 54 because of the fog. after 8.5 long years and the deaths of almost 4500 american troops, the iraq war is officially over. military convoy honked in celebration after it crossed

the border in kuwait. it happened for five hours under the cover of darkness. the 500 soldiers were ordered not to tell their iraqi friends before they slipped out of the base. >> feeling of elation. it really does. to see what we have accomplished in the last 8.5 years and to be part of the last movement out of iraq is hard to put words to it right now. >> some of the service members who left iraq today were on their second deployment. one soldier spent 3.5-5 years there. the bay area sent many troops and lost some in iraq. allie rasmus is live in alameda with reaction on our troops coming home. the general feeling among people we have talked to this morning is one of relief. we have asked a dozen or people out here and just about all of them said they were glad u.s. troops were finally pulling out of iraq. >> i'm glad it's over. i feel for the families that have made big contributions and

have a friend that lost a nephew and so i'm glad it's over. >> we showed you the video a short time ago. at least 4,000 american troops will remain in kuwait for the coming months. and the u.s. will also continue to have a nonmilitary presence in iraq with at least 1700 diplomats and close to 10,000 security contractors remaining in the country for the foreseeable future. that made some people we talked to this morning question whether the u.s. involvement in iraq is over. >> how many actual troops are there compared to contractors and consultants? it's not going to be like world war ii coming back. >> reporter: at the peak of the ward in 2007 during the so- called serge there was as many as 170,000 troops in iraq across 500 military

installations. as of early this morning the final 500 military troops left camp the last base military base in iraq early this morning. live in alameda allie rasmus. >> later today more than 160 local soldiers will return home for the holidays from afghanistan. they are part of the california national guard's 870s military police company. they spent the last ten months to protect a military base. troops will arrive throughout the day at all three major bay area airports. overnight news one person is dead after a crash in richmond. it happened sometime before 2:00 this morning on the 1400 block of ezmond avenue. that crash left three cars involved in a mangled mess. investigators are looking into the driver of one of the vehicles speeding out of control and hitting a couple of empty parked cars. the crash tore through a picket fence of one house. they have yet to release the

identity of the person killed. a little more than a mile away firefighters responded to a car in flames. we've learned investigators think that fire could have been set by young people. the car was empty at the time and no one was hurt. a man suspected in a hells angel funeral shooting has been spotted in san jose. steve ruiz was seen sometime yesterday. ruiz has been on the run ever since. please consider him armed and dangerous and he has ties to fremont, gilroy, and campbell. police in east palo alto are investigating the shooting of a 12-year-old boy. it happened just before 7:00 friday night. the boy was rushed to the hospital where he was treated for nonlife threatening injuries. investigators say right now they have no suspect or motive

for that shooting. about two dozen families are living in temporary housing after an apartment fire. it started yesterday just before noon on the second floor of an 18 unit complex. firefighters say eight of the units were heavily damaged by the fire. some other units were damaged by smoke and water. everyone was able to escape that building safely. >> open up the door and there is like smoke coming at me. i was like whoa. i went inside my room and grabbed my shorts. that's all i came it with. >> the fire caused an estimated $1.5 million in damages. the cause is still being investigated. san francisco firefighters are also responded or responded to an apartment fire yesterday. it happened at ninth and guda. one apartment was destroyed. officials say two or three families have been displaced. a gas pipeline that was exposed during a water main break was drained overnight. crews wanted to drain the pipeline before attempting to

repair the ruptured water lines. the problem was discovered yesterday morning. east bay mud found a 16-inch water main and a 4-inch water line had both broken. several homes in the area flooded and some lost water service. the morgan gas pipeline that was exposed connects to the conoco refinery in roe day owe. a little different pattern we had than on saturday. saturday the coast was clear and temperatures anywhere from low 50s inland to upper 60s. today the fog has come back. that will allow a cooler pattern. weak system sliding by to the north. strong system continues in southern california. the pattern is stuck. this won't do much of anything but cool us down a bit. tvs right now take your pick. anywhere from 30s and 40s. a little cooler for some. temperatures though i think we did see a 28 near napa. there are cold readings out there. the low continues in southern california. travel patterns may be in

arizona down to las vegas. l.a., san diego, you might want to keep an eye on the forecast. the low will eject out of here. the weak system will push out. that will give us a breeze. not until tonight and tomorrow. we have the fog on the coast. fog inland as well. it's still a very dry pattern. cold mornings. 30s and 40s. more fog. cooler highs today. especially closer to the coast. it's a dry pattern. no rain in sight. we could sure use some. instead of low to mid 60s we will bring temperatures down. there could be a few isolated. i will tell you this pattern is dry, dry, dry. it will continue this way for awhile. we'll have more including our extended outlook coming up. 7:08. today has been declared another spare the air day in the bay area. that means burning wood or pelts is banned unless it's your only source of heat. spare the air.org estimate

it will be a little cooler today with a little bit more fog. highs in the mainly 50s. newark police are questioning three men after a shoot and standoff at a home. swat team surrounded a house around 7:00 last night. they were searching for the person suspected of shoot egg and injuring a 25-year-old man at that same house on saturday night. officers detained three men. the neighborhood had to be evacuated during that standoff. >> for a little while. you never see these problems. >> neighbors were allowed back in their home. they believe the incident is gang related. no one has been arrested. santa clara police are releasing information about a man that stockpiled bombs. they arrested daniel pappas. a search of the home on rosemonth drive recovers hundreds of explosives. two of the bomb were so

unstable the bomb squad had to come in and remove them. new york investigators are calling it one of the horrific crimes they have ever seen. they are searching for a man that burned his exgirlfriend alive in an elevator. he doused her with a flamable liquid. woman's body was burned beyond recognition. building surveillance cameras caught pictures of the attacker that was dressed as an exterminator. system is scheduled to resume in a hearing of a soldier accused of the largest leak of classified intelligence? history. it will determine whether army private bradley manning. yesterday defense attorneys said manning showed signs of emotional instability by creating a female alterego online. they discovered the private was

gay and had gender issues. local occupy protestors want private manning released. >> free bradley manning. >> about 500 people marched in san francisco yesterday. with the end of the iraq war demonstrators say service members are part of the 99% and u.s. should protect their welfare when they arrive home. protestors pitched tents in the afternoon but all of them expect for one came down by nightfall. they are planning a mass protest. they are marking the three month anniversary of the occupy wall street movement. after getting kicked out of the park protestors had been eyeing the church lot as their new camp site. the church which served meals to demonstrators in the past said setting the tent city in the area would not help the mission of the church or the protestors.

six protestors were taken to the ground and arrested during a rally in raleigh north carolina. the demonstrators failed to dispurse on command. they were taken into custody two blocks from the end of their march. the arrest caused more traffic problems than the march itself. 7:14. the final death toll from a typhoon could be in the thousands. severe storms triggered flash floods. the red cross is estimating 650 people have already died. more than 800 are known to be missing. the government fears the numbers are higher. >> this is the worst everywhere you see police say it has been occupied with so many houses. now it's all of them have been washed away. >> while it has stopped raining there, the new concern is disease. bodies are starting to pile up. secretary of state hillary clinton is pledging american

thursday's presidential debate when the two sparred on u.s. policies for iran. a $1 trillion budget deal is heading to president's desk for his signature. president obama said he will sign it as well as an extension for the payroll tax it and unemployment benefits. however those two measures last only through february. the president wants longer term extensions but he is giving in on republican demand to quickly decide on whether to bill an oil pipeline from canada to texas. >> it is my expectation in fact it would be inexcusable for congress not to further extend this middle class tax cut for the rest of the year. >> the spending bill includes day-to-day budgets for ten cabinet departments. it gives the pentagon a small increase. california senator barbara boxer joined the president in supporting a yearlong extension of the payroll tax cut paid for by a new tax on wealthy meshes. she said quote we should extend

these priorities by asking millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share because those offsets won't dampen economic growth. a new poll shows growing discontent with president obama. the associated press poll shows 52% of adults say the president should be voted out of office. when he was matched against the two republican front runners. mr. obama had a 1% lead over mitt romney and 9% lead over newt gingrich. a historic peninsula post office could soon be up for sale. the building located on hamilton avenue will be sold as a nation-wide effort to cut costs. the post office sits on prime property. earlier this year a four story building was sold for $64 million or $900 per square foot. the hamilton office will be relocated but with no expected layoffs planned.

with christmas a week away the demand for toy donations continue to grow. the toys for to thes program says the demand is the highest in years. according organizers have been -- organizers have been unable to collect the toys they needed. hundreds of seniors in the east bay have food for the holidays thanks to dozens of volunteers. they gathered yesterday at berkeley fire station five to fill hundreds of grocery bags. it was bought by borkly firefighters and the community after the bags were full they went out to deliver them to low income seniors. >> it's nice you can spend a few minutes talking to them. some of the seniors are lonely. it's nice to sit down and chat

yesterday was the inland fog. yesterday the coast was clear. it's a combination of the two. you put those together it will be a cooler day. hazy skies. southern california dealing with a whopper of a system. it has been that way all this month. there is no sign of any change. we might be talking about record heat at least for december. claudine you looked at me yes, that is true. fog in the valley. that is it. also on the coast means cooler temperatures. temperatures today it's a dry pattern. 50s for temps instead of the mid 50s. extended outlook if you are looking for rain keep looking. or do a rain dance. there is nothing there. little cooler as we head toward wednesday and thursday. a bay area company has created a home thermostat that looks and works like an ipad. it uses smart technology to sense when you are home. as claudia reports the inventors say it will slash your energy bills.

iraqis. good morning, welcome back. i'm john sasaki. >> and i'm claudine wong. it is now official this morning all u.s. troops are out of iraq. a military convoy under extreme security crossed into kuwait. this was a surprise withdrawal. it happened two weeks early to prevent insurgents from planning one final attack. the soldiers could not tell loved ones back home or iraq. the troops will head to camp virginia which is an american base inside kuwait. they perhaps could see loved ones by christmas. allie rasmus is live in alameda where news of the withdrawal is spreading this morning. allie. >> reporter: the general feeling among people we have talked to this morning is one of relief. we show you that video a short time ago of the last 500 troops to leave camp. they crossed the border in the early morning hours. the rest of the troops will

in california when california sent some of his first troops over to fight in the war in iraq. you'll hear from him and his thoughts on the troop withdrawals coming up. live in alameda allie rasmus. >> while the bay area is joining the rest of the nation they there are mixed feelings in iraq. some iraqis are nervous that the pull out leaves the country exposed to attacks. analysts say the country remains divided along sectarian lines. others are celebrating the exit of what they call american occupiers that are not invited. however they plan to cause a diplomatic presence. there will be private american contractors and securities throughout iraq. >> here is a final casualty total from the nearly nine yearlong war. the pentagon reports 4,487 service members died. iraqi deaths estimate more than 100,000 died from war related

deaths. this man 23-year-old army specialist david hickman was the last soldier to die in iraq. the north carolina native was killed last month. >> it's in the history books. it's like we know what happened at the end of the war. that was our friend. because he was a hero. simple as that. >> hickman was stationed at fort bragg, north carolina. that is where president obama spoke about the end of the war last wednesday. a former oakland football player that died suddenly has been laid to rest. 19-year-old fred thompson was remembered yesterday on the football field of his a madder. he collapsed and died during a pick up game of basketball. his teammates were among the hundreds to say goodbye. >> his face mask was filled with a bright smile every day at practice. we are going to miss him so

much. >> thompson went to oregon state on a football scholarship. today in vallejo we will be dancing to raise money to raise money for the slain police officer jim capoot. it's being called a zumbathon. all proceeds are going to go to capoot's wife and three daughters. california highway patrol is investigating a death of a person on a south bay freeway. he was hit by a car on the capital expressway. it all happened just before 2:00 this morning. chp is not releasing any information on the cause of that crash. foster city police are investigating first murder in nearly six years. police found a man dead in his home on water bury lane friday afternoon. they have not released details on the man's death.

no persons of interest have been named. it was the first reported homicide in the city in 2006. and just the second since 1996. san francisco police will hold a community meeting tomorrow to discuss a fatal officer involved shooting in that meeting. officers shot a man on wednesday during a traffic stop after he said he ran and fired two shots at officers chasing him. the man later died. no officers were hurt. tomorrow's meeting is in the northern community room on fillmore vote. it starts add 4:00. a registered sex offender accused of kidnapping and raping a woman is in jail. stephen clark was arrested on friday night. the contra costa sheriff department said he defriended a woman and kidnapped and raped her. officials say he was spotted in san diego county earlier this week but got away. a san jose woman accused of

stealing from an elementary woman. police say 28-year-old sandra stole high school gold necklace from several students. she sold the necklaces to jewelry stores. it happened on six campuses. officers say she told susan she was a family friend. asked to see the gold necklaces and replace them with costume jewelry. there will not be a repeat of the myth buster cannon ball stunt mishap. >> i thought the safety precaution -- we thought the safety precautions were in place to have a cinder block wall and a berm behind the firing. that will never happen again. >> the host of the popular cable show attended the meeting yesterday. you will recall the myth busters crew was shooting a segment at the alameda county bomb range when a cannon ball went off course and slammed into two homes and a mini van. it happened so close to their homes the sheriff says he's

service streets. there is no word how long it will take to repair the overpass damaged by that fire. a south carolina toddler is back with his family after being lost for more than a day in the woods near his home. 21-month-old jason burton spent a night alone in the rain and cold. jason was eventually found sleeping on a log beneath an enbankment. the boys family said he must have walked out the door while his mother was in the bathroom. all american muslim is sparking protest. about 100 people gathered outside a lowe's store in michigan yesterday near the city where the show is filmed. lowe's pulled its ads after a christian group from florida started an e-mail group against the shows advertisers. >> it has nothing to do with antimuslim sentiment. it's just no group should be able to hold an american company. like this. it should be able to advertise

block of desmond avenue. police are trying to figure out what happened. you can see that crash left the three cars involved in a mangled mess out there. investigators are looking into the possibility that one of the drivers was speeding out of control and hit a couple empty parked cars. the crash tore through the picket fence of one home. police have yet to release the identity of the person killed. san jose police say the man accused of killing a hells angel member has been seen in the south bay. steve ruiz was spotted in san jose within the past day. ruiz shot steve townsend. ruiz has been on the run ever since. anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call police. police are investigating the shooting of a 12-year-old boy. it happened just before 7:00. the boy was rushed to the hospital where he was treated for nonlife threatening

injuries. right now they don't have suspects or motive for that shooting. foster police are investigating the first murder in six years. police found a man dead in a home on friday afternoon. investigators have not released any details on that man's death. no person of interest has been named. it is the first reported homicide in that city since 2006. only the second since 1996. newark police are questioning three men after a stand off at a home. they surrounded the house around 7:00 last night. they were searching for the person suspected of shooting and injuring a 25-year-old man at the same house on friday night. after a few hours officers eventually detained three men. the neighborhood had to be evacuated during that standoff. >> i've lived here a little while and never seen this kind of problem. >> police believe the incident is gang related but no one has been arrested. gas pipeline that was exposed during a water main break was drained overnight.

crews wanted to drain that pipeline. the problem was discovered yesterday morning at the intersection. they found a 60-inch water main and 4-inch water line has broken. several homes in the area have flooded. the pipeline was exposed and connected to the refinery. two dozen families are living in temporary housing after an apartment fire in alameda. it started yesterday just before noon. firefighters say eight of the units were heavily damaged by the fire. everyone was able to escape the building safely. >> open up the door and there is smoke coming at me. i was like whoa. i went inside my room and grabbed my shorts. that's all i came out with. >> the fire caused an estimated $1.5 million in damage. san francisco firefighters

the case yesterday. yesterday we had that easterly breeze. some areas inland. fog just socked in and stayed cold. that easterly breeze sends temperatures into the 60s. coast and bay many locations were warm. that is not the case today. this system coming in is giving us more of a westerly breeze and temperatures will come down about five or seven. very, very dry pattern. it's just stuck. globally it's stuck. not just here. if you are looking for rain it's not happening. there is nothing on the extended forecast. southern california is getting the rain but we're not we've had a couple days. actually the days on the 11th and 12th were a couple .01. the most i remember seeing was a third of an inch at vacaville. the rest of the areas had a tenth of an inch to a quarter. a lot of 30s out there or 40s. san francisco was held up a little bit because of the fog. starting to move down the san mateo coast.

few minutes. first after 8.5 long years and the deaths of almost 4500 u.s. troops the iraq war is officially over. a military convoy honked in celebration after it crossed the border in kuwait. it happened before dawn and under the cover of darkness and in strict secret city. there are mixed feelings in iraq about the withdrawal. some are nervous it leaves the country exposed to insurgent attacks. but other iraqis are celebrating the exit of what they call american occupiers who weren't invited nor welcome. however the u.s. still plans to keep a strong diplomatic presence in baghdad. all right here's a look at the final casualty toll from

four people live in the different units. the fire started in the upper floor unit you are looking at with the window burned out. you can see the smoke damage from up above that. it looks like an oning that was completely burned off. at least one person confirmed did not survive the fire. one person killed in this fire. at this point fire officials haven't been able to tell us whether that person was a man or a woman or the age of the person who did not survive this fire. one person killed in this fire that happened early this morning. firefighters say they were able to contain the fire to that one single apartment unit. there were challenges getting access overhead. 23 you look at the roof of the building there are still a few firefighters up on top. they had to tackle this fire from the roof because there are bars on all the windows on the outside. they couldn't get in from the outside. fire investigators told us an arson investigator is on the way out here. they say at this point they

street movement. demonstrators scaled a chain link fence to get into the church parking lot. the church which served meals to demonstrators in the past says setting up a tent city in that area would not help the mission of the church or protestors. six protestors were taken to the ground and arrested during a rally in raleigh, north carolina. the demonstrators failed to dispurse on command. protestors said they were taken into custody two blocks from the end of their march. the arrest caused more traffic problems than the march themselves. a former oakland tech high school football planar died suddenly has been laid to rest. 19-year-old fred thompson was remembered yesterday on the football field of his high school a matter. the oregon state freshman collapsed and died during a pick up basketball game. thompson died of an enlarged

different pattern. yesterday the fog was out mainly toward the valley and east bay. it stayed foggy and cold there near the coast. 67 at gilroy. 62 around 64 from santa rosa to redwood city. that is not the case today. you can see a big increase in the fog. coastal fog. peninsula south bay and east bay most of that is fog free. much of the coast are dealing with a lot of low clouds. it's still a dry pattern even though we are cool there is no rain in sight. some of the 10-15 day outlooks don't bring us any rain at all. had a little bit last thursday. and then after that it has gone dry. every indication says it will continue to go dry here. expect for fog. occasionally we will get that northeast wind. another low will drop in southern california. the pattern has stopped. new mexico, colorado, and into

good morning. mainly fog free. there is a little bit down toward san jose. mainly on the coast and also up in the north bay and in the delta. for san jose temperatures sunny and hazy. hundreds of people are missing after a boat carrying migrants headed to australia capsized off of indonesia. about 250 people were believed to have been on board. the boat was only designed to carry 100 people. many of the people on that boat were from afghanistan, iran, and iraq. the icy relations between the u.s. and north korea by gnaw be falling. a significant donation of food to north korea.

an investigation is under way in a fatal fire in oakland. this happened about an hour ago. allie rasmus is live at the scene. >> reporter: john an arson investigator has just arrived. we can see her inside through the burnt out window of this second story building. this building you are looking at is where the fire started. it looks like a house but it's carved up into six different apartment units. this is a building on the 700 block of arthur. an arson investigator is usually called to the scene whenever there is a fatality. one person was killed in this fire. there is at least four people that live in this building. and were home when the fire

started. and firefighters confirm at least one smoke alarm did go off. but it was one of the neighbors one of the people who lived here you will hear from him in a second that first saw a cloud of smoke. he was the person who warned his neighbors to get out. >> we were asleep and we didn't we just smelled smoke. we didn't hear alarms. we heard a man yelling really frantically. >> two ladies on the corner they told me what about the old gentleman. what about the old gentleman that lives in the building with you. i ran back in there and i couldn't save him. i feel like it's my fault. >> it's not your fault. it's not your fault. >> and that gentleman and some of the other neighbors out here told us the person who believe did not survive the fire the person they believe was killed in this fire was a man a neighbor in his 50s. we believe he lived in that
