>> reporter: there were approximately 100 most life us military armored vehicles and 500 u.s. troops in this final tactical road march. the convoy trundled across the southern iraq desert from adder, the last u.s. base that only one month ago housed 12,000 american troops. the trek lasted to daybreak to the kew wait border. for iraqis there were many emotions. >> this is a jubilant moment, and we in iraq that we own the country now. the sense of belonging now is skyhigh. >> one thing is very important to understand, iraq's future is primarily up to iraq, just as it has been for several years and as we have seen in other countries that we have left, sometimes friendship develops better if you are not too heavy a presence inside the country. >> reporter: there will still be an american presence in iraq that includes

diplomats, security contractors and nonmilitary personnel. but today, for the first time since 2003, the soldiers are gone. many leaving on the same road that brought america in more than eight years ago. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. this morning we asked people here in the bay area what they think about the end of the war in iraq? >> i'm glad it's over. i feel for the families that have made big contributions and i have a friend who lost a nephew. and so, i'm glad it's over. >> if iraq becomes a true democratic country, than it's worth it, but we'll have to wait and see. >> the research center reports almost three-quarters of americans began with the iraq war when it began in 2003 and that view dipped to 50% in 2004 and reached its low of 36% in 200. today three-quarters of americans say they support president obama's decision to end the war. there is still some

division among lawmakers about the ending of the us military mission in iraq. house speaker boehner expressed his concerns this morning on "meet the press." >> i'm concerned about our very quick and rapid withdrawal from iraq. we have sacrificed a lot of lives, a lot of soldiers injured, a lot of our treasure to free the iraqi people and help them build a democracy. >> bohn wantt later this evening more than 160 local soldiers will return from afghanistan. they are part of the california national guard's 870th military police company. they spent the last ten months in afghanistan, helping protect a us military base there. the troops will arrive at various times this evening at all three major bay area airports. we'll have more on those homecomings tonight at 10:00. it has been a long night

and day for residents of a menlo park neighborhood. police conducted an exhaustive search for suspects after one of them opened fire. maureen. >> reporter: ken, in the last hour menlo park police gave us an update and told us three east palo alto men have been booked for parol violations and released photos of five weapons recovered after an early morning officer-involved shooting. law enforcement with guns drawn swarmed the area of meno park after police say a group of men opened fire on officers at 1:15 this morning and one officer fired back. >> first i heard one shot and then, like, 15 seconds later i heard two shots. and then i heard the cops coming. >> reporter: police were responding to a call about a group of armed men gathered outside of a home and say when they arrived the suspects fired at them and ran. >> really scary, because that never happens in menlo park, a

lot of police and swat and helicopters. >> reporter: it didn't take lock for police to recover this rifle and catch two suspects. but it would take hours and s.w.a.t. teams conducting backyard searches before four other suspects were taken into custody and two other handguns and two rifles were recovered. this family got an early morning automated call from police. >> the police said said they were serving for somebody and we looked outside and there was a cop car with the dog and flashlights and everything. >> reporter: several roads were shut down for more than ten hours while teams gathered evidence from the crime that covered more than two blocks. the closures kept several families from returning home. >> it was late. we didn't have no other choice, but to wait. >> reporter: police tonight say they are looking into any of the armed suspects are linked toy apossible retaliation for two shootings in nearby east palo alto, but tonight say it's too early to say if there is a

correlation. reporting live in menlo park, maureen naylor, ktvu channel 2 news. we first brought you this story during last night's 10:00 news, s.w.a.t. teams surrounded a home on olive street following the shooting of a 25-year-old man late friday. that victim suffered major injuries. no arrests were made during last night's operation, but three men were detained, although it's not clear request. police say friday's shooting appears to be gang-related. as raider fans pour out of the coliseum in oakland they are being greeted by law enforcement looking to crackdown on drunk-driving. ktvu's jade hernandez is live at tonight's dui checkpoint. >> heather the checkpoint is behind me and we have seen officers pull over drivers, we're live in to be of the oakland coliseum, here in the city. alameda county's avoid the 21 organization dispatch a 25- officer dui strike team this

afternoon. officers used this checkpoint as a base, where anyone suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances is brought by. we're live at 66th and coliseum way, in front of the coliseum where the raiders just wrapped up play against the detroit lions. today officers focused on raider fans who haven't designated a drive to get home safe. multiple agencies are involved, including anleandro, fremont and livermore. officers warned braves about not risking a ticket or even worse an accident of mixing alcohol and getting behind the wheel. >> having everybody recognize it's a holiday season and a lot of people are drinking and d- raying and shouldn't be doing that. we end up getting a lot of smiles and thanks, actually. >> reporter: the officers are concentrating their efforts between hyde

wakefield didn't survive a fire that started here at 7:30 this morning. >> we smelled the smoke of the we didn't hear any alarms. we heard a man yelling, really frantically. >> reporter: it was their neighborhood, jerry davis, who also tried to warn wakefield about the fire. >> i ran back in there, and couldn't save him. i feel like it's my fault. >> it's not your fault. >> you did what you could. >> reporter: vores say they know the fire started in wakefield's room upstairs. >> the report we have is that he was a smoker and that could be a possible cause. we're reluctant to say what it was at this point because it's under investigation. >> reporter: after the fire, officers were called in to go through the scene of the fire and officials say that standard procedure anytime there is a fatal fire. >> from what we could tell at this moment there is no obvious signs ever foul play. >> reporter: his family says wakefield worked for the city of oakland's maintenance department before retiring recently. >> he was children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews and when they got the

news it was so sad. it's so heart-breaking and's hard for me as well. >> reporter: a sense of loss felt by wakefield's neighbors, the people who shared this home with him. >> i'm going to miss him much. he with as a good friend of mine. >> reporter: alallie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. police say 49-year-old jimmy jinter was speed on esmond when he crashed. there is no word if alcohol was involved in the crash and no one else was hurt. just minutes later about a mile away firefighters responded to a car in flames. it happened just before 3:00 a.m. at cherry street and stanford avenue. investigators believe that the fire was set by a group of young people. so far no arrests have been made.

. highway patrol investigators looking into the death of a person on a south bay freeway. it happened just before 7:00 this morning on the capitol depressway off-ramp of interstate 680 in san josi. officials say the person was a pedestrian hit by a car. there is no word on why that person was onramp or if any arrests have been made. a pair of shoot in oakland yesterday left one person dead and two others injured. police say that first shooting happened at 3:15 in the afternoon on the 2600 block of fruitvale avenue. one person was shot and taken to the hospital and then later died.

the second shooting happened just before 10:30 last night on the 1200 block of 7th street. two victim were shot and taken to the hospital. both of them are expected to survive. no arrests have been made in either shooting. there is a knew push to make california's roads greener. the california business alliance for green economy presented a plan on friday to the air resources board to bring the biofuel business to the state of the group says the change would create green jobs and technology and also improve the quality of life. >> the low carbon fuel standard is critical to help transform the way people get around in california, to move us away from dirty, polluting pet role umfuels that contribute to our air quality problems. we have thousands of people dying every year because of air pollution. >> this comes as the state air resources board works on its plan to produce a lower carbon fuel standard. a bay area company has created a new home thermostat

. >> a coalition of conservatists and wild horse activists is now suing the government. the lawsuit is an effort to block the government's plan to castrate hundreds of wild stallions in eastern nevada. several groups filed the lawsuit, including the western watershed project challenging the plan calling it scientifically unsound. the bureau of land management says the project is another way to reduce growing horse herds that damage the land. let's check in with meteorologist mark tamayo and kind of gloomy in the north bay. >> those clouds took some time to clear, especially near parts of the bay and immediate coastline. this was the time-lapse looking out towards the bay, the low clouds have been increasing. and they will be a factor as we head into late tonight and early tomorrow morning. in fact, it shows up nicely here on live stormtrack 2. those clouds will be pushing back into the region as we head
