let's get your first look at weather and traffic. steve. >> we have mostly cloudy skies and a few light sprinkles going through. it won't amount to much. most of that light shower activity is near san jose and morgan hill. really a very, very quiet stable pattern. here is sal. good morning, traffic on 80 westbound is moving along pretty well as you can see no major problems heading out to the mccarthur maze. also the morning drive looks good at the bay bridge. let's go back to the desk. thank you, sal. time is 6:01. new details are coming in following the death of north korean leader kim jong il. they are urging the 24 million residence to rally behind kim jong un. we also learned a funeral is planned for december 28th. 11 days of national mourning are in effect until december 29th. kim jong il died on saturday from heart failure.

he was 69 years old. overnight north korea conducted a short range missile test. that is according to the south korean news agency. it's not clear if today's missile test is in response to the death of kim jong il. but it also may be part of a scheduled routine drill. its military is on high alert. the white house says president obama is monitoring the situation in north korea following the death of kim jong il. coming up at 6:15 we'll have a live report from our washington, d.c. newsroom with whether the announcement will lead to better or worse relations between the u.s. or north korea. news of kim jong il's death dragged down asia markets. there are worry there is could be new instability in the region. south korea dropped 4% at one point. markets in taiwan, singapore, and indonesia fell this morning. our time is 6:02.

repair crews in san pablo go back to work this morning on two ruptured water lanes. some streets and homes were flooded over the weekend and now there is a new worry. ktvu allie rasmus is in san pablo to tell us what is underneath some people's homes and has been there for details. what is going on? >> reporter: the water pipeline that broke is about five feet wide in diameter. it ruptured on saturday. it does cause flooding. that water line it's a water distribution line for east bay mud. it runs directly under elprtrell drive. this is a live picture we will show you. where you can see a big gaping hole in the middle of the road. not sure if they are still there. earlier this morning there was a handful of work crews standing next to that big hole. you can kind of give you per speckive of how big that hole in the ground is is. the workers standing around it look pretty small in compare

season. east bay mud crews are working to repair this but work crews with the oil company conocophillips are also out here on the scene this morning. that is because when this water main break happened, it caused water to spill out into the streets and flooding in nearby homes and when the work crews came out here to do the repairs, they discovered there was a six inch gasoline pipeline that ran next to the water line. it took the residence that live in this area this is a residential neighborhood right next to eloper trillion drive. they didn't realize a six inch gas line was running right by their neighborhood. conocophillips owns that gas line. company representatives say the gas line was probably built before the housing subdivision right next to it was. company representatives say it shouldn't cause any problems. shouldn't be a hazard for anybody in their people. we have reached out to the spokesperson in their community to see what the timeline for the repairs are for this

morning. live in san pablo allie rasmus. our time now 6:04. the south bay occupy movement just launched an effort to prevent an elderly couple from losing their home to foreclosure. the protestors went to san jose city hall last night. they want to raise awareness about an 89-year-old military veteran and wife that mistakenly signed a variable interest loan. >> these are the people that are part of the e9d% that foreclosures are effecting. my father is a world war ii vet. you know he was trying to live the american dream. now he's living the american nightmare. >> last night supporters held what is called a posada. it's a mexican tradition reenacting the trip of marion joseph asking for shelter. san francisco is paying for the after math of -- the

chronical reports the police overtime tab is more than half a million dollars. meanwhile the public works department says it has spent $47,000 in clean up costs at the plaza. and the parks department has spent another $50,000 to help repair damage left behind. san francisco police shut down the encampment at justin herman plaza almost two weeks ago during an early morning raid. 6:05. a fundraiser will be held tonight for the family of the ray lay hoe police officer killed in the line of duty recently. officer jim capoot was shot and killed last month. henry albert smith is held in jail accused of killing officer capoot. they will hold a fundraiser for officer capoot's family tonight in walnut creek. it will be held at skipolini's pizza. that fundraiser begins at 5:00 p.m.. computers -- commuters

could see something new on the bay bridge. they will start on a cable for the snoeks is. and more patrol officers will be patrolling the dangerous section. tara moriarty joins us live. >> reporter: we just got off the phone with the chp they want to remind folks to take it easy on the s-curve. as you know the speed limit on the upper deck is 35 miles an hour around the s-curve. 40 miles an hour an the lower deck. we have seen quite a few officers out this morning. they are adding patrols at the s-curve. chp wants to make sure you go the speed limit. they will be acting as a visual deterrent. the extra presence will go a long way to keeping this span safe. construction crews will be installing the first strand of cable. you are looking at animated video of what the project will look like.

it will be the longest in the world pressuring at more than a mile. now the chp says you should not slow down to try to look. keep your eye on the road. if you would like to see progress made on the bridge, you can go online or to treasure island where they have a display set up via construction camera. i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. 6:07. the police have been quite busy looking out for dui drivers. some drivers didn't get the message not to drink and drive during the holidays. it was a crack down in sonoma county that arrested 49 people. 18 others were arrested in a county wide dui sweep. 6:08. let's check the roads right now. sal is watching every place. what do you see out there? >> we are starting with the toll plaza. because we are getting a little bit actually we are starting with the east bay i should say. i don't want to jump ahead of

welcome back. your time is 6:13. this morning the payroll tax cut extension is not a sure thing. on saturday the senate passed a temporary bill to continue the payroll tax cut for two more months. republicans in the houseover representative want the legislation to be for a full year. the house will vote on the senate bill today. if the republicans are united in voting against the bill it will fail. >> it's pretty clear that i and our members oppose the senate bill. it's only for two months. the president said we shouldn't go on vacation until we get our work done. and frankly house republicans agree. >> it's not clear what will happen if the house as expected votes against the senate bill today. after voting for the bill on

saturday the senate adjourned for the year. 6:14. this morning there are new concerns about the stability of korea after the death of north korean leader kim jong il over the weekend. that is after we heard reports a couple hours ago that north korea has tested a short range missile this morning. carol han has how the white house is reacting with this. carol. >> reporter: dave, the white house is pledging solidarity with south korea which is on high alert this morning after reports that north korea has test fired a short range missile off its east coast. the news agency says a test happened on the same day the country announced the death of kim jong il. they are trying to confirm that account. the u.s. is reaffirming its relationship. they both agreed to closely monitor all developments. while north carolinians are mourning the death of their

greeted by hundreds of well wishers in gaza. the news agency is reporting the u.s. is on the verge of transferring taliban prisoners. now held in guantanamo bay and afghan government custody. they have been in secret talks with afghanistan taliban insurgents. and now the u.s. is offering to transfer some prisoners in exchange for action against the taliban leadership. that includes denouncing international terrorism and the willingness to enter into political talks. 6:17. a very touching home coming over the weekend who bay area soldiers that spent the past year in a war zone came home. last night ktvu cameras were there at san jose international airport when one of the largest groups of military personnel came home. members of the 185 military

traffic. it has been kind of sweet. not too bad. >> yeah. traffic is moving along pretty nicely in some injures. but it's getting busier in others. it's not going to be a completely monday light traffic. let's take a look at the bay bridge where right nows traffic is backed up for about a five minute delay at the toll plaza. no major problem there is. as a matter of fact, if you are driving to the toll plaza, you will see traffic moving along a little slowly as you approach the maze. also interstate 880 traffic looks good in both directions as you drive past the oakland coliseum. if you are driving in contra costa county it looks pretty good. 80 westbound still a nice drive. 6:citizen let's go to -- 6:19 let's go to steve. thank you. few light sprinkles. we wish they would stick around a little bit. we need the rain. it won't amount to too much. some 30s but a lot more 40s due to the cloud cover and areas of

good morning. right now traffic is looking a little bit slow at the toll plaza. although it's not completely slow. the fast track lanes are moving through without any delay. you'll see a good drive on the bridge. this is wile. a police chase in southern california ended suddenly. the police car crashed into a building. police were chasing a gunmen when the police car went out of control and smashing head on through this fence and into a vacant building. luckily no one was hurt. the fire department was called in to cap off a broken gas line. san francisco mayor ed lee announced last week the city would match a private donation of $1.5 million to house homeless families, homeless activists were both happy and also confused. mayor lee said part of the city money would come from the mayor's fund for the homeless. according to the san francisco

united states. >> now no foreign dignitaries are expected to be allowed at kim jong il east funeral next week. in overnight news. the plane caught fire when on the ground. a mechanic was working on the plane when it caught fire. they quickly put out the fire. in hercules a van crashed into a children's church nursery. it happened around 10:00 last night. church goers say a special holiday service just ended when the driver of the van accelerated from a nearby parking lot. fortunately nobody was inside at the time of the crash. there is no word on the drivers condition or the reason behind the crash. a fatal crash on the peninsula is under

investigation this morning. this happened about 1:00 a.m. on highway 280 at farm hill boulevard in woodside. a car was speeding when it left the freeway and crashed into a tree. the driver was ejected died there at the scene. police say alcohol may well have been a factor in this crash. time now 6:32. construction crews at the scene this morning of two broken water maines in san pablo. they are trying to patch up a problem that has flooded part of one neighborhood. ktvu allie rasmus is out there right now. with the latest on the repair work as well as some new concern under several houses. what is happening? >> reporter: dave, the largest water pipeline of the two that broke is about five feet wide in diameter and runs directly under el portrel drive. this is in san pablo. the break happened on saturday but repair work on that line is still going on. you can see there is traffic detours here as a lot of cars

crossing right in front of it because of us. there is a large number of construction equipment around here. if we show you the view from our mass cam. you can see a large gaping hole in the middle of the street. because of the equipment around it, it might give you perspective. the construction trucks look pretty small compared to the large size hole they are doing this repair work on. east bay mud crews are working to repair this but they are working alongside with work crews from the oil company conocophillips. when the water main break happened it was discovered it runs parallel to a six inch gasoline pipeline. east bay mud screws made that discovery on saturday. we spoke to a representative with conocophillips says it connects to the refinery in roe day owe. >> once we found out there was a water line break and near the pipeline. we shut the pipeline down as a

recaution and drained all the product. there is no gasoline running through theline at the moment. >> reporter: that gasoline was not damaged by the water main break. when the water main break happened it caused flooding to the home in this area. some residence were surprised to know there was a gas pipeline going through our neighborhood. the conocophillips spokeswoman said she does not know when this pipeline was discover. allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 news. happening right now more facebook employees are getting ready to report to the company's massive new campus inmen low park. moneys of work -- in menlo park. hundreds of workers have moved out of the old site. today all of facebook roughly 2,000 employees will go to work in menlo park. the new campus could house as

many as 9400 employees by 2014 which has caused traffic concern for neighbors. police in menlo park said a man opened fire on officers. coming up in ten minutes what was found during that search and how some neighbors are reacting. 6:35. new york police say a man that killed an elderly woman by setting her on fire inside of an elevator did it because the woman owed him money. 47-year-old jerome isaac there turned himself into police there. he is afraid 73 -- he sprayed 73-year-old gillespie with a flammable liquid. surveillance cameras show isaac lighting amole tv cocktail and throwing it into the elevator. he told them she owed him already 2,000 for work he has done for her. iowa is taking steps to

the experts say pollution around the bay area will hold in fine particlet matters. this is a sixth spare the air day so far this season and winter doesn't officially start until thursday. >> it's that time of year. >> yeah. 6:37. let's get to sal to see how roads are. >> if you are driving to san francisco today, i think you should have a pretty decent drive. although there is a backup already. let's go outside and show you that westbound bay bridge that is backed up for about 10-15 minute delay. the metering lights are on. no problems on the way into san francisco. if you are driving on the 880 freeway north and southbound here, it looks good past the coliseum. no major problems there. if you are driving on westbound 580, it looks pretty good. westbound interstate 80 see slow traffic here and there.

jose over the weekend. police want the publics help to locate 38-year-old steve ruiz. he is considered armed and dangerous. time is 6:44. it's going to be a busy day on the bay bridge. crews are expected to begin work on a cable for the new section. and the chp stepping up presence on the s-curves. tara moriarty joins us live with what commuters should and should not look out for. tara. >> reporter: traffic is starting to pick up this morning as you make your way into san francisco. right here at the s-curves. this is an area that officers are going to be targeting starting today. if we flip around here we can take a look over this way. i want to show you the section over here. you may notice if you drive the bay bridge a lot. this section to the right is a little spot officers like to sit at right before you enter the tunnel there with radar gun. they are making sure that folks are going the speed limit and that is thanks to outside funding officers are being added to the area. the speed limit is 35 miles an hour on the upper deck, 40

6:47. police on the peninsula are questioning several men in connection with a shootout in a menlo park neighborhood. police say a group of men opened fire on officers early yesterday morning in the bell haven area and one officer fired back. no one was hit by the gunfire. police were responding to a call about a group of men with guns. when officers arrived that is when the men shot at them and took off. three of the suspects were found. they also found several handguns and rifles. 6:48. there are reports of a complete reversal at cal state university. a huge change has taken place on campuses and this could be a reflection of the economy. coming up for you at 7:05 we will tell you what has changed and the action the university is taking. 6:48. let's get right to sal now. sal, it has been a pretty nice monday morning as we head into a big holiday travel week. >> it has been. i want to remind people that tonight is a big football game

at candle stick park. people will be come into san francisco at a time they normally wouldn't be. give yourself plenty of extra time. let's take a look at the golden gate bridge. we do have a lot of 49er fans in marin county as well. this might actually be crowded this evening. sometimes on the golden gate bridge we do have while it's unusual slow traffic southbound we have a big backup coming in from the tunnel. this mornings commute at the toll plaza westbound it's pretty good. the game starts at 5:30. people start coming in early like at 3:00 or as early as 2:00 for some. moving along and taking a look at the southbound we're off to a nice start. for the most part northbound 101 and 280 still look good. you should have a nice drive up highway 101 through palo alto and redwood city. let's go to steve. thank you i sir.

a very good morning. we have low clouds around scene fog. believe it or not a system going from east to west which has produced light sprinkles and showers. it's moving off rapidly. a few sprinkles. it's all part of the process of another low dropping down into southern california. we don't get much of anything in terms of clouds. mostly sunny. no rain expected for very light showers or sprinkles in the morning. believe me it's about gone. good travel weather this week expect for areas of fog which form nights and morning. but there is no big storms on the forecast. no rain or snow. they could use some. not only here but up toward sierra. it looks warm. very warm. high pressure fires right back in. it's a quiet week. expect for areas of fog. there are thick pockets of that. 40s for many. 30s for a few. there is the line santa cruz mountains back over to santa

holds a community meeting today. it's about last weeks deadly officer involved shooting. this cell phone video was taken moments after wednesday's shooting. police say a man fired shots at police after he ran from a traffic stop. police fired back. the man was shot in the head. he died thursday night. today's community meeting begins at 4:00 p.m. at the northern police station. the winning coach of a texas high school championship team is one of seven people recovering this morning after being hit by a run away electric cart on the field. video of the incident may be difficult to watch. the unmanned cart raced to have the of the field -- to the center of the field where the coach was answering questions. there you see there the grounds crew member jumped in and hit the breaks. what cause the -- the oakland raiders are helping the toys for to thes program.
