stadium across the country wondering what happened here at candlestick park twice. video on espn showed what appeared be one or more transforms blowing but we are sill in the dark as to what went wrong. the stage was set for one of the most anticipated games of the season when suddenly the lights went out. >> we are like what's that? you know -- you know it's just a little embarrassing on monday night football. >> reporter: embarrassing for the city of san francisco and candlestick park. >> reporter: we were in the middle of interviewing outside. what's missing? that's another. the lights just went out. it knocked out the lights and also temporarily shut out the escalators preventing many from getting in. police got on loud speakers to address those out received we have children in the crowd, let's be mindful of them. >> we are trying to make sure everybody is safe and that the

49ers have a great time here today. >> reporter: pg&e crews checked these 12,000volt lines outside the stadium. we were told they were dead but nobody seems to know why. a short time later the power went out again. more crews checked the maintenance locker at the stadium. a 49ers official said not to take pictures of the workers. fans inside were getting antsy. >> some booing mad but just sitting there. >> reporter: the outage disrupted cell phone service, some fans stuck outside were unage to contact their friends who had their tickets inside. >> i can't get ahold of them inside. i can't get a signal and they can't go find them. i don't know where they are sitting. >> reporter: a frustrating night for some fans who couldn't get inside the stadium even though they had tickets. other fans inside -- pg&e said it still doesn't know what caused the power outage, about

the only thing that can make 49er fans feel bet better is that the team won. >> and -- as for more on the game and the playoff run we will have that later in sports. >> in washington house republicans tonight decided to wait until tomorrow to vote on and possibly reject a senate measure to extend payroll tax cuts. they are due to expire january 1st. the senate passed the bill over the weekend extending them for two monthors for 160 million. republican house leader said they want them extended for a full year. >> it's time to stop the nonsense. we can resolve these differences, and we can do it in a way that provides certainty. >> reporter: the democratic leaders said they have no plans to call back members, many of whom have already returned to their districts. >> the world is waiting

watching to see what happens in north korea after the death of the dictator. they cried publicly today after learning the man they called their dear leader had died. it appears his third son will take over the state but that's not certain. united states secretary of state was in japan today and during a press conference with the foreign minister said she said the situation is changing. >> we both share a common interest in a peaceful and stable transition in north korea as well as in ensuring regional peace and stability. >> reporter: state media reports the lead dived died of a heart attack. >> the death is the talk of the town among the large korean community in the bay area and patty lee spent the day talking to members of that community and is here now with two very different opinions.

employees. they say they will open a second campus nearby. san francisco game maker zynga slid lower again today on its second day of trading. they opened last friday at $10 a share and fell 5% on the first day and almost as much today. the president democratic newspaper may soon change hands. it's owned by the new york times, the times management said it's in negotiations to sell it and 15 other regional papers to halifax. the owner of the daytona beach news journal. >> oakland police hope a dress will lead them to the identity of a woman who died last week. they say she was wearing this dress when weigh is found barely conscious. she later died. she was african american between 30 and 40, she was

>> reporter: we are at the veterans building, up on the second floor is the veterans resource center that helps vets find jobs. tonight they said vets often have a hard time finding work when they come home. rum coming home to a loving family during the holidays is a joyous occasion. veterans say the transition is difficult. >> it's a culture shock. leaving the military is -- it's a unique culture. >> reporter: james small served two store tours in iraq. he said when he came back he wanted to be a firefighter in san francisco hoping that his leadership skills and discipline in the army would make him a good candidate. >> i wanted to be a firefighter really bad and applied all over,. >> reporter: he said he was one out of 18,000 people applying to be a firefighter. he didn't get the job. he said all 15 members of his unit don't have careers they

strike a patient died. >> reporter: four thousand union nurses prepared to strike this thursday around the bay area. today both sides met with a federal made ater with no progress. they say nurses being asked to pay more for health benefits and losing paid sick days. >> we as nurses who take care of those who are compromised will come in sick. >> reporter: the representative said we remain committed to providing our nurses competitive wages and benefits while doing our part to make health care more affordable for patients. this would be the second streak in the past three months. back in september a patient died in oakland due to an error by a fill in nurse. they have hired temporary replacement nurses to bring on during the strike and a spokeswoman said today she expects high quality patient care to continue.

tom was given an up close look today at how the signature cables will be strung across that new bridge. >> reporter: it's a cross between a w, nch and a ski lift and will speed up cabling to eye degree unimagined before. >> things that didn't exist until we built it. >> reporter: a site that the bay area has never seen. a new way to string cable across the new eastern span of the bay bridge. >> a total of 137 strands, each has 127 wires. >> reporter: 17, 4hundred wires each able to hold an su, v will make up the cable. this animation shows that the cable strand wills be put into place. as it's moved each bundle, will travel along a roller system on the catwalk. >> as we pull the rope it gets
