shut downs. we are waiting to hear if all councilmembers will be on board. when thousands of protesters moved in on the port of oakland for the second time in less than two months officials say it cost businesses four million dollars. >> i think it's fine if they want to protest but don't close down the 5th largest port in the united states. >> takes use of force, tear gas to stop that you okay? >> absolutely. that's what will have to happen. otherwise the customers will leave and go somewhere else. >> reporter: now some members want to put that message in writing. >> i think it's fine for us to make sure it's a message and direction that we won't tolerate. they have been critical of the mayor since police first clashed protesters in october but later let them reestablish a camp and interrupt business at the port. >> chief jordon working with

woman on charges for the murder of michelle lei. they say it was handed down after a three day hearing. 470 pages of transcripts have been sealed. she has not given a plea to the murder charge. lei went missing in hayward last may. she was found in september. >> today a judge sentenced a man to 65 years to life in prison for the murder of a security guard. prosecutors say the 20-year-old shot and killed gary jackson in revenge for jackson identitying him in a gun case. it's a story we first covered in 2009. his family and friends mourns 28-year-old. jackson signed a witness statement saying he saw the suspect carrying a sawed off shot gun . lee gunned down jackson in revenge even though the charge was dropped.

>> san jose officers say they spotted jarrick brown near capitol expressway and highway 101. he is wanted in connection with a carjacking on december 7th. police say brown crashed and ran. >> i saw the guy jump over the fence and went behind my house and my neighbor house. i didn't know. >> the neighbor said brown forced him into the garage, threatened him and stole his toyota camry. >> we learned the 7-year-old who fell from a chair lift in sugar bowl has died. the resort said that the incident is under investigation right now by state regulators. the unnamed boy was a member of the sugar bowl ski team. he and two others were riding the lift on sunday when the boy somehow fell out. so far inspectors say they have found that lift was functioning properly. >> it's still a mystery

tonight what happened when the lights went out at candlestick during the 49ers game last night. david stevenson is live with what we have learned about the power outages. >> reporter: pg&e said it all started here with this power line that they say is responsible for the initial outage before kickoff. there a number of unanswered questions about what happened when the lights went out at candlestick. >> as we were pick up some things to head in to the stadium, there was a flash, you could see the reflection and the lights went out. . >> reporter: that was captured overhead as a 12,000 volt power line separated, plunging the park into darkness for 20 minutes last night just before the kickoff between the 49ers and the steelers. >> when that wire came down to interrupted service to the park. we are still investigating the second power outage. >> reporter: that happened in the second quarter and stopped the game for 16 minutes.

it's not clear if that was caused by pg&e or conditionl stick park equipment. >> we sent out an emergency command letting them know something was happening. >> reporter: smoke forced 40 people out of two lucky boxes. san francisco mayor said he and others at the game couldn't get cell phone coverage. >> we will work on that. i think the 4thers will talk about that. they have plans to increase cell phone use at the park. >> reporter: for now pg&e is investigating what caused this power line to separate and what they call a rare happening. >> sometimes it can separate from just to much corrosion. we all -- in foggy environment but what we do is send these pieces to a lab that we have and we analyze it. >> reporter: the mayor called a meeting of pg&e the fire department and the constituent and local public utilities commission to try to prevent more outages, especially with another playoff game at

numbers expected to increase 4% for 2011. travel and tourists are expected to generate more than $104 billion in direct spending. that's 10% more than last year. travel related employment is expected to account for 4% of the tollal employment. >> the state controller said he has found more than $3 billion in waste, fraud and abuse in state and local government. that's more than any state controller has found in the history of california. the office said it gets tips from both the public and the media. >> you know we are identitying the dollars that could be savored at the state of california. the win here is for the taxpayer. >> the controller's office said its working on 200 to 300 audits on any given day and their goal is to return that money to the state's general fund. one of the audits involves

hercules. they started auditing them after reviews raised red flags. they were questioning the acruracy of their transaction reports. the controller is also looking at millions of dollars in deficits in the redevelopment agency. >> bay area sciencists did it again. they made another discovery of planets outside our solar system. new john fowler join us with the find of the first earth sized planet around another star. >> reporter: they are important because of their size. what that means for answering the biggest questions of all. they are 950 light years earth. two of five planets orbiting a star. they are the first earth sized planets found around another star. >> today we change our frame of reference. no longer is the earth one out post. now today earth is one of a

investors were encouraged by positive news out of europe and a 9% jump in housing construction here in the united states at the closing bell, the dow was up 337 points, the nasdaq was up 81 points. >> need yeah families would came for a holiday food box fought a christmas surprise. dozens got a free tree. it's a story we brought you last flight from san francisco. a tree grower in oregon donated 100 trees to the salvation army in each city. he said he wanted the trees to go to people who wouldn't otherwise be able to get one. >> it hasn't happened in 90 years. what ski resorts doing to make sure this dry december still provides a white christmas. . >> and you can bet it'll be another cold one. temperatures getting down into the low 30s in the inland bay valleys, fog back and frost. we will look at the five-day forecast with the weekend in view. 8@

senate san jose police officers association approved a 10% pay cut for another year. it was set to expire in july of next year. now it'll continue into mid2013. the union said the agreement will save san jose taxpayers $30 million and keep officers being laidoff. the city of alameda's interim fire chief has been named official chief. he was in his second week as interim chief when a man drowned just off crown beach on may 30th. firefighters did not try to save him. he was believed to be suicidal because of a policy they say prohibited them from making water rescues. the city later changed that policy. last month a state cleared

paramedic was the fire department of wrongdoing for that drowning. >> today california attorney general filed suit against fannie may and freddie mac demands answers about foreclosures. she is asking them to list all of the empty homes they foreclosed on and provide information on the agency's role in selling or marketing risky mortgage backed securities. pg&e is taking new steps tonight to keep its customers happy. new at six john is live now in oak hand where he spoke to the utility about how it's trying to get back in its customer's good graces. >> reporter: this is tower substation c which is running a major port of the power. they have had an image problem which they appear to be repairing. in downtown berkeley where street musicians bring their own power people said pg&e needs to do some damage

control. >> they have a definite pr probm. it's a mess. >> i don't think it would be a bad idea to try to create a good pr campaign for them. >> reporter: this month they have changed their approach toward two controversies. first they accepted liability from the san bruno explosion and fire that killed eight. >> we have a commitment to the customers and we are committed to delivering safe and reliable energy. >> reporter: some residents have also complained about smart meters. pg&e said it hopes to allow people to opt out of the program for a price. >> what are you seeing in -- the most recent comments is a really good step forward for those who want a set of options. >> reporter: this woman is happy with her smart meter but said pg&e has some work to do. >> i don't think that they totally understand how annoyed people were about what happened in san bruno. that is sort of unfortunate. >> reporter: crisis

anything. >> reporter: not all ski resorts have snow making donnor ski ranch hasn't been able to open. >> a warm fire tomorrow will be forbidden again. air quality managers have issued the 8th spare the area alert for tomorrow. bill martin is tracking the conditions right now in the weather center. >> more of the same. no rain or snow in the forecast, what's interesting, the story about snow making in lake tahoe. going up there for years skiing mountain bikes and over the last ten or 15 years you ride around the summer on your bike and key them working the slopes, they have the water holding systems, liting lakes and they have pipe that reason out like sprinklers out to the yard and when it gets cold enough as it has been they start making snow. its been bad for natural snow but the conditions have been really good for making snow. that's why they will be able to accommodate skiers.

we talked about the biggest weekend of the year for them. it's interesting when you go up and see these pipes or where they went in and it's just like you do our sprinkler system on your lawn. little bigger flow. several changes, the long range forecast and that's the way it'll be. subtle changes meaning a little less frost, maybe a little more, cooler, few more clouds but just about the same. cool erin stead of, 29, 28. few clouds in to thursday and friday. high pressure owning us. as it does we have had a little wind. i wouldn't say -- the hills it has been breezy. today it was. in those winds are allowing the fog not to be such a player right now. if we didn't have wind the fog would own us right now and build up. when aim thinking about is the travel for the holidays. you don't want to travel around the central valley with that valley fog. we don't have a lot of that.
