them. >> reporter: lately homeowners here told us their eyes are not on these lights they are on the look out for suspicious activity. john lasen is part of his display. each year he looks forward to putting on this show of lights. >> i like colors, i made a lot of them. >> reporter: this year several thefts in the neighborhood are marring his enjoyment of the season. >> it's a really quiet neighborhood and i'm very, very surprised. >> reporter: neighbors tell us delivered packages are being stolen from their front porches, two incidents just yesterday. >> a car actually follows the ups truck or the fed ex truck and they jump out and run up and grab the gifts. >> i'm expecting some packages, a delivery today and tomorrow and so i'm house bound until the ups driver shows up. >> reporter: debby told us she stayed home all day and waited for her packages because she's concerned they'll be stolen if the driver leaves them on her porch. >> i'm supposed to be at dinner

threats of closing it during protests. >> allow him to speak. >> reporter: the matter sparked some heckling from the audience when it was mentioned by a public speaker earlier this evening. the resolution has yet to come before the council but earlier today one of the sponsors said he wants a clear policy in place. >> i think it's time for us to make sure that it's an unequivocal direction and message that we will not tolerate. >> the resolution estimates last week's shut down cost the port at least $12 million. members of the occupy movement says it only sparks their cause. oakland will be voting on a

new identification card. it will take 90 days before the matter returns to the council. u.s. stocks moved sharply higher today providing investors with an early stocking stuffer just before christmas. the dow jones industrial average was up 337 points closing back above 12,000. the nasdaq jumped 80 points. analysts credit encouraging developments in europe. as for housing new figures released today indicate new home stocks will top 886,000 this year up from 887,000 last year. and 554,000 in 2009. the national association of home builders estimates each new home built creates three jobs for a year. concord based round table pizza is set to emerge from bankruptcy tomorrow. a u.s. bankruptcy judge has approved reorganization that saves 3,300 jobs but also closed 200 restaurants.

tax cuts and unemployment benefits are set to expire january 1st. in washington, jennifer davis, fox news. more details now, the white house says not breaking the stalemate will cost the typical american family about $40 per paycheck. that works out to be $85 a month or $1,000 a year. the obama administration characterizes the typical family as earning $50,000 annually. the official white house blog is asking the question what does $40 mean to you? so we decided to pose that same question on our facebook wall. jessica says $40 is groceries for me, my husband and two kids. it's a lot when you need to feed your family. mark elviar says more than i can even describe in words. my family suffers so much, we visit local charities weekly to get food and supplies. i am employed by the cost of living has gone up so much. share what $40 means to you on

our facebook page. a woman has been indicted on charging that she killed michelle le. the indictment allows the hearing to take place against esteban. investigators say esteban killed le in may. le's body was found four months later in a remote area between pleasanton. a 7-year-old boy who fell off a ski lift at the sugar bowl resort has died. the boy was a member of the sugar bowl ski team and was wearing a helmet when he fell some 60 feet from a chair lift. two other boys were on the lift with him. authorities have not released the child's name or said where he is from. new at 10:00, the sacrifice made by a bay area family that is going to be featured on a float at the upcoming rose

parade in pasadena. ktvu's ken wayne is in petaluma tonight where he learned about a unique float and its message about organ donation. >> the petaluma couple has turned their family tragedy into hope. on new new year's day their story will be part of the rose parade. 11-year-old tre adkins died much too soon. in 2000 he was hit by a falling tree limb and suffered a brain injury. >> it was a moment when the floor became the ceiling. we were just stunned. >> reporter: tre's parents had just a few hours to decide if their only child's organs should be harvested to try to help others. >> if we have to suffer this loss at least some good can come of it. >> reporter: this week, tre's parents put the finishing touches on a floral float design. tre has already made a difference in at least four

away accounts paid off. we're live in concord, debra villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. california attorney general camela harris filed a lawsuit aimed at mortgage giants. harris is investigating the agencies involvement in thousands of foreclosures and what role the agencies played in selling or marketing mortgage backed securities. almost 770,000 california homes have been foreclosed since january 2007. is sonoma marin area announced it sold $191 million in bond to help pay for a commuter project that would link the two counties. however the money raised will go into an education crow fund

as an effort is now under way to overturn a voter approved quarter sent sales tax to fund the project. last night the city council approved the wording of it's official position on high speed rail calling for the project. the latest estimates say the rail system will cost more than $100 billion. that's about 2.5 times the original estimate. california's medical marijuana backers are pushing for statewide system to try to regulate the industry. a coalition of activists are preparing a 2012 initiative. the initiative would form a board. activists hope this will urge federal officials to ease down on their medical marijuana clubs and growers in california. there's still a lot of questions why the power went

san jose police were on the look out for the man considered to be armed and dangerous. the suspect committed two carjackings, threatened an elderly woman. >> reporter: san jose merged units and other officers swarmed on to el cajon drive where the suspect had crashed a vehicle after being spotted by police this morning near capital expressway and highway 101. according to police, the suspect 31-year-old jarek brown fled on food into the neighborhood where he was spotted by one man dangerously close to his own home. >> i was worried they might be

you kt -- ktvu channel 2 news. authorities released this picture showing the suspect at the chase bank on international boulevard back on december 13th. police say the man approached the teller about 5:40 in the evening and demanded money. right now there is a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. a san francisco man is facing drunk driving charges after driving a car down a 100- foot enbankment. the highway patrol says it took two hours to reach the car and the man inside because of heavy brush. he suffered minor injuries and was taken to san francisco general. police later arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence. investigators say it is a mystery as to what caused a small plane to spin out of control and crash on to a busy new jersey highway this morning. all five people on board including two children were

new figures show bad weather this year crushed california's grape harvest. the sacramento bee reports 3.3 million-tons were harvested. rains in june, a cool summer and shorter picking season are blamed for the drop off. on the plus side, wine makers say the grapes themselves should make for a good vintage. the weather is also having an impact on the sierra. there's almost no snow there and what's worse is there's no snow on the forecast. even though there are still some resorts that are opened for skiing. >> many of the sierra peeks are

barren and some ski lifts are idle. most dangling over slopes. but people are skiing on boreal. >> you can see behind us and see we have plenty of snow. cold temperatures continue to allow us to make snow. >> reporter: john schneider says they've been making snow on record amount thanks to consistent freezing temperatures overnight. but we have not had significant snowstorms in december. slaughter says some people had cancelled those trips despite ample manmade snow. >> the protection is something we have to deal with. a lot of people see it's not snowing and assume we don't have anything. >> reporter: the department of water resources says this is the second driest december dating back to 1921. for smaller ski areas such as donner ski ranch it means they

cannot open. but most ski resorts have snow making equipment. >> the snow is actually pretty nice. and the weather is phenomenal. >> reporter: while the ski resorts can make snow that does nothing for our snow pack. the state says historically when we start off in december, this slow that we don't catch up and the snow pack ends up below normal. and there was snow today for two siberian tigers who make their home at six flags discovery kingdom in vallejo. snow was brought in special for maxum and miska two 18 -month-old tigers. at first they were a little bit tentative around the snow but after a while they started to relish in it. digging around and playing. in the wild the critically endangered big cats live in russia and china and have very thick coats and if fur on their
