a college student has been found alive after getting stranded in snow for over two weeks. >> reporter: the special delivery police officers are making to kids in need. "mornings on 2" starts now. good morning. i'm dave clark. >> i'm claudine wong. tori campbell is off today. right now, nurses at eight bay area hospitals are beginning a one-day strike. >> reporter: sutter hair insists that during this strike patient care won't be affected. but the last time they had a strike, a patient died under a

replacement nurse. these replacement nurses are being picked up and shuttled to the eight hospitals affected by the strike. a spokesperson for alta bates says these nurses are highly trained and qualified. >> it's scary, especially, you know, me right now being pregnant. i'm a high-risk pregnancy. it's harder for me. unfortunately, i have had some mishaps happen. >> reporter: out here live again, you can see the nurses have just started their strike out here. they are just about a dozen people out here right now. but they are expecting a couple of hundred out here in the next few hours. now the hospital management says their staff nurses are paid

well. [ chanting. [ . demonstrators posted this video on the internet. they claim the video shows police beating them with nightsticks. officers moved in several times late last night, early this morning there at the martin luther king park. protesters even called the police police.

police in petaluma have issued a school alert after a suspicious man approached two students. police say an 11-year-old girl and her brother were walking home. the man was driving a black mid seed toyota pickup truck with an orange sticker on the window. if you have any information, contact petaluma police. in washington, the payroll tax debate is making millions of americans nervous. president obama wants lawmakers to pass a short-term extension of the tax cuts.

but house speaker john boehner and republicans are trying to extend a full-year extension. and in washington, d.c. john boehner and eric canter are holding a press conference. we're certainly watching that podium. they will be talking about this payroll tax cut stalemate again. this is an ongoing stalemate going on in washington. president obama delayed a trip to hawaii. so he can try to get something going there. we expect them to come to the podium soon. we'll try to listen to them when they do. late this morning, president obama is going to talk about the impasse. we'll hear more about that coming up at 7:15, during a live report from our washington, d.c. bureau. right now, oakland police officers are starting to spread some christmas spirit. ktvu's kraig debro has the details on what some lucky families and children are getting. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, dave. this is the oakland police officers association. this is the union's christmas

basket. what they do is collect toys, put them in the back of patrol cars and give them to needy kids. there is kind of a santa -- he's out of uniform there. how many years have you been doing this? >> we've been doing this over 30 years. >> 30 years. >> every year there is a need. it's been worse than past years. >> how do you make contact for those who need the help? >> our officers are out there 24 hours a day, seven days a week. officers get to see the people who really do need help during the holidays. so -- so, not only do we provide them with gifts and toys and stuff for the kids but we also provide them with a meal. >> what's the reaction where you come out there with toys and food? >> people are appreciative.

they are very pleased that the -- actually, the police officers are bringing stuff to their house. so they are real happy. it's a really good situation. it's a good community outreach for us. it puts police officers at different swags coming to your house. out of something negative, something positive. >> you are dropping something off instead of taking someone bay way? >> exactly. we're. >> and the police officers pay for this out of their own pocket. we do get a lot of generous donations. but the vast majority of what we bring to people are from the officers' pockets. >> reporter: we are gonna be following one or more of these cars when they go out later. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. let's go back now.

to you. mostly sunny skies. dry conditions expected for today. a fog-free start to the morning but breezy. 7:14. several bombings in baghdad killed dozens of iraqis today. local authorities think it was a coordinated attack designed to wreak havoc all across banged. look at the pictures. at least 14 explosions went off during the rush hour traffic. some of them near schools. about 60 people died. about 200 were hurt. so far no one has claimed responsibility. violence comes just five days after the americans left iraq. moments ago the united states announced it made mistakes in a friendly-fire incident in the middle east. the u.s. will take responsibility for the accidental death of 24 pakistani soldiers. a commando unit came under fire in afghanistan last month. that unit had trouble determining where the gunfire was coming from.

that too many employers already have in dealing with the economy and what's coming out of washington. >> reporter: meanwhile, here is a live look at the white house website. at the top you see the countdown to the expiration of the tax cut. in nine days and 13 hours, taxes go up for 160 million americans. the white house says it means working families will lose about $40 every two weeks. president obama has invited some families that will be affected by the tax increase to the white house today. he will be appearing with them in making his speech and turning up the pressure on house republicans to act. for now we're live in washington, d.c., alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. today arling ton cemetery is reporting to congress on the accuracy of its gravestones and burial sites. this comes after revolutions that people have been buried in the wrong place or misidentified. last week, two top officials

attacks. nine car bombs, six roadsides, all happening within two hours, rush hour. you can imagine the chaos here. no one knows exactly where it could hit. some of these targeted moffet place. another exploects happened out -- explosion happened outside of a school, another outside of the integrity commission there. at least 23 people were killed there. imagine the disruption this brings into people's lives where they don't know where they -- where they can be safe. is behind it? we don't know. there were explosions in those as well. now, iraqi officials are saying they warned the u.s. something line this could happen if the u.s. left iraqi to its own defenses. you have to remember that president obama said a couple of weeks ago, there's no fuller expression for support than leading iran lead its own

the 49ers want to build a stadium right near the great american park. they've secured a $50 million loan. however, the grassroots group, santa clara plays fair, is collecting signatures to put the issue on the ballot again. they say voters who approved a stadium measure last year were

not told exactly how much it would cost. the stadium is projected to cost a billion dollars. the search is still going on this morning for an explanation to monday's power outage at candlestick park. pg&e says it thinks a downed power line caused the first outage just before the kick jo. but it has no idea j the stadium blacked out a second time at the start of the second quarter. investigators from the city of san francisco and 49ers are looking into the blackouts. 7:25. let's go right out to sal castanedo who is following this collision involving a chp motorcycle. what do you know? >> we know that the officer was injured a little bit. not major but we did see the collision block all of the lay. the traffic is backed up out -- up out to -- northbound on 8 8 -- on 880. a lot of them came because of

occupy protesters are accusing officers of excessive force after overnight confrontations were caught on video. tara moriarty is live at martin luther king park. what's happening now? >> reporter: tensions have been sort of flaring all morning long at the camp. people are really anxious because police have been trying to kick them out overnight. there are quite a few tents left. one man was keeping his belongings at a mini -- minicamp that showed up overnight. >> here they come. come here. look out behind you. behind you. behind you. >> whoa! that was absolutely ridiculous! >> reporter: now, this video was shot by a protester around 2:00 in morning, when police moved in a second time. they also clashed with folks here around 11:00.

protesters say that police used clocks and hurt some -- clubs and hurt some people. officers served eviction notices earlier in the week and wanted everyone out of here by 10:00 last night. >> overall, it's been pretty antsy because they gave the eviction notice last night and once they served that, people started getting paranoid. some people stayed and bunkered down. >> reporter: now, police say there's been a spike in violent crime. tuesday night police arrested a man for attempted rape after entering a woman's tent -- after entering awoman's tent.

[ chanting ] another occupy camp has been removed on the campus state of california. university officials recently told them they could not stay during the holiday break. after negotiations students finally took down the camp this week. it's not clear if they will put it back up next semester. a grim prediction for the mayor of oakland. mayor quan says there may not be a way to stop the protesters from shutting down the port. the city of oakland will also spend about $100,000

what's happening? >> reporter: they've been loud calling out grinch. this hospital is one of eight affected by this 24-hour strike. the leader of the california nurses association say there are many issues. but the big one today is the hospital management's plan to reduce or eliminate sick pay. >> we will be taking care of our compromised patients who are already sick. we really do not want to do that. that's not what we want to do to our patients. >> reporter: the hospital has hired replacement workers and say patient care will not be

we're at the scene of developing news in oakland. kraig debro is on east 19th avenue where a water main break was shooting gallons of water in the air. kraig? >> reporter: yeah, it was quite a picture here just about a mile south and eve of lake her writ -- lake merritt. you see a lot of water coming out. the water main aprobably about pa 60-inch cast iron main. it's probably three feet deep. water is still coming out. and to the right here. and what happened was when the water was gushing, the east bay m.u.d. crews couldn't find this other main over here, this other valve. once they found it, they were able to isolate the water.

so that means that people down the street have water. but it's the people on east 19 the that are waiting for water service to return. it was a real gusher. take a look at that. water is going up 10, 15 feet in the air. in fact, it busted out a window in an apartment building and the water is getting in the garage, and it's just trickling out. crews didn't get out here until 7:00. once they did, they isolated the valve and shut off water in all four different drebs. if you take a look at -- different directions. if you take a look at the street, you can see the asphalt looks pretty compromised there. i talked with somebody on scene and he said what they will do is patch up the hole and have crews come in. he says the street is not compromised at all. but right now they are still
