it's deja vu for the second time in a month there has been a shooting in the same walmart parking lot. fire investigators are expected back at first light to follow up on the big fire from yesterday. what other city agencies will also be here as well. this is expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the year. it's getting under way. how busy travel is expected to be. a rare holiday session of congress today. the big vote looming for the payroll tax cut. ktvu channel 2 morning news continues. good morning, to you. welcome to friday december 23rd i'm dave clark be >> and i'm claudine wong in for pam cook. let's check your weather and traffic.

rosemary is in for steve. it may be a good day if you have shopping to do to go inside a mall. >> oh yes. gives me goose bumps to think of us sitting in the 20s. we have a freeze warning for the west bay valley and the east bay valley lasting until about 9:00. last time i checked areas around dublin, san ramon sitting in the 20s. mid 20s around napa and santa rosa. we'll take a look at what you can expect outside your door this morning and what we are look add for your holiday weekend coming up. hi sal. traffic moving well on interstate 880. we are expecting a good day today being the 23rd of december. we will see what happens. this is also a look at the san francisco northbound 101, southbound 101 traffic looks good. let's go back to the desk. in overnight news a san leandro walmart is opening up on time right now.

late last night police were all over that parking lot at the store. noelle walker is live outsides store where there have been two shootings in less than a month. >> reporter: yeah it's almost believable. the walmart opened for business here about two minutes ago. that is less than eight hours after a shooting in a parking lot here. it happened around 10:30 last night. a man was waiting for his wife to come out of the walmart when he got in a fight with a suspect in the parking lot. the suspect pulled a gun and shot the victim in the leg. >> the victim got into his vehicle and drove home. the suspect and this is what we are checking so far did follow them and continued to shoot at him as they drove. >> reporter: he got to his house two miles away. that is when an ambulance arrived to take him to the hospital where he is expected

to survive. it's deja vu on black friday. that is the day after thanksgiving. there was a shooting in the same walmart parking lot. that was caught on surveillance video. two weeks later the suspect in that shooting surrounderred after a standoff with police. the suspect in this shooting is still on the run. he is described as a hispanic male that may have been driving a gold buick. our time now just turning 6:03. san francisco firefighters are still at the scene of a five alarm fire that engulfed three buildings. it started just before noon yesterday in the city's western edition. ktvu kraig debro is at golden gate avenue in pierce street. you can tell us what investigators are -- when investigators are going back to that scene. >> reporter: fire battalion chief with the san francisco fire department told me a few moments ago investigators will come back here at first light. they will get a clear look with

what they are dealing with. after the fire investigators get here, they do their job the building inspectors will come because of the tops of the buildings up there remember the fire went through this building. at the top of the building there is the ceiling or roof. there is the piece of the building that shoots beyond the roof. the battalion chief says that is very, very brittle right now. they have to determine whether it's safe enough to go back into the firefighters and the residence. this fire started yesterday just before noon. and from our video from news chopper two you can really see how quickly it moved through the first building and then jumped to the second. at that time during the day there were a lot of heavy winds around here. that may have been one of the reasons the fire was able to move from build to building so quickly. san francisco fire department employed 150 firefighters. that is more than half of their force. because these buildings are so close together in san francisco and she said that is what you

deal with when you work in san francisco the buildings are so close together you need to get people here to prevent the fire from starting. >> we called 1502 the fire building and so that just tells me they almost -- they will start there. they will be looking through all of these buildings and looking at not just origin cause but how it extended. >> reporter: about 40 people had to be evacuated from the building. some of them got out themselves. others were helped out by the fire crews. from what we know right now four people were injured. two residence of these buildings also injured the tex tent of their injuries are not known. we do know some of the residence that live here want to get back inside to see if they can get their things out. they won't be able to do that until the building inspectors come here following the fire inspection team to see how

deal for people that collect these shoes. if you are standing in line somewhere to get your air jordans tweet me. this mornings commute on 880 northbound and southbounds traffic is moving along pretty well. also this morning if you are driving on 101 to peninsula that traffic looks good. and again the traffic is moving along pretty well but don't go too fast. let's go to rosemary. cold out there this morning. the cold will beat you. anywhere from 5-20 everyone 30 degrees colder than yesterday morning. it's very calm out there. satellite and radar showing you have a few high clouds spilling over our ridge of high pressure. we're not expecting any rain. it will stay to our north. this is doing us a little bit of a favor this morning. i would have liked to see it move in late last night. but it's still doing some good. temperatures have warmed a few degrees in some cases in the last hour because this blanket of clouds helps to keep that warm air we received yesterday from flowing back into the

the city of borkly crack down on occupy protestors is aimportantly working. there are only seven tents left at martin luther king junior park. city crews are no longer harassed as they clean up the mess inside the park. berkeley issued eviction notices. the city says the encampment has become a health and safety hazard. arrests have been made for attempted rape, assault, and carrying a gun. the standoff on capitol hill over extending the payroll tax cut has inned. the house is expected to take action in just about 45 minutes from now. ktvu alison burns is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom on the one big hurdle that remains. alison. >> reporter: no one can object

for the tax cut extension to pass this morning opinion most members of congress have gone home for the holidays. house speaker john boehner will use a procedural move called anonymous consent. house republicans almost derailed the tax break holding out for a yearlong extension instead of a two month extension. speaker boehner changed his mind last night under pressure from senate leaders and the president. >> doing the right thing for the right reasons is always the right thing to do. and while everyone asked for a full year extension of these programs, a lot of people weren't willing to put the effort in as the holidays were approaching to get it done. our members were. >> reporter: the votes today are on just a two month extension of this 2% payroll tax break. so a bigger fight is looming in

the new year about a longer term extension and how to pay for it. we'll have live coverage of the vote during my next update in about an hour. for now we are live in washington, d.c. alison burns. time is 6:15. new zealand southern island is being rattled by more earthquakes. there you see them ducking for cover. several hours ago a series of earthquakes hit christ church. the first was a magnitude 5.8 followed by a 5.3. buildings and airports were evacuated and shut down. about 60 people were treated for minor injuries. this comes after that devastating earthquake that killed 182 people. people in tahoe are feeling an earthquake. they felt that last night. a 3 point magnitude quick did

hit. we will get details about the arrest of a serial arsonist. thomas hardman faces felony charges for setting more than 50 dumpster fires in pittsburgh, antioch, and bay point. hartman is due to be in court next week. air season is being -- arson is being suspected in a car fire. this happened early yesterday morning. the fire was contained before it damaged any of those apartments nearby. firefighters say it's possible that car was stolen and then set on fire to try to get rid of the evidence. california high speed rail authority is responding to a report that the bullet train project not create one million jobs. state rail leaders say the san jose mercury news story which we reported yesterday was correct when it explained how that number of jobs was figured. however high speed rail supporters says that does not

change the need for the system and adds the project will still create thousands of much needed jobs. 6:17. just about an hour from right now a russian spacecraft that is carrying an international crew will be docking at the international space station. they blasted off wednesday morning. they will be joining three other crew members already there. six men will be working and living together. more than 200 miles over earth for the next three months. time is 6:18. things have been looking pretty good. that could change later on today when people head out to shop. >> what i do this time of year i look for unusual things. people lining up for shoes or going toes airport -- going to airports. this morning you will find the roads clear but you will see clouds and people are already up shopping. some people still do go to work. going to work on a friday like

they normally do and the others going to the airport. golden gate bridge traffic looks good here. westbound bay bridge this traffic looks nice. there is no problem getting on to the bridge. if you are driving on the lower deck, it looks good as well. this is a look at 880 in oakland it looks good. 6:19 let's go to rosemary. it's a frosty start but i have to be careful when i say that because it's so dry out there. chances are it's very patchy. we are dry. we are cold. we are freezing that is for sure. our inland areas sitting in the 20s and low 30s this morning. around the bay upper 20s to low 30s and low 40s. our lunchtime numbers will be sitting in the 50s. wide spread 50s. calm conditions today. partly cloudy to mostly clear and for the afternoon mid to upper 50s for the coastline.

upper 50s to low 60s around the bay and inland. if you are going to the sierra for your holiday weekend, it will be a dry one. temperaturest will be awfully cold in the overnight hours. down ten degrees or so. mid 40s for the afternoon. light winds, mostly sunny skies. it will be a great weekend to head up the mountain. your extended forecast it will be a great weekend to stay put. sitting in the low 60s in the afternoon. temperatures just as cold tomorrow morning. the possibility of another round of freeze warnings for our inland areas. low 30s expected as we start christmas morning. monday afternoon going to be a dry one. sun and clouds expected there. and then by tuesday night the possibility of light rain move into the area. temperatures slide just a little bit sitting in the low 60s. there is your extended forecast. this morning the commerce department reports orders for long lasting u.s. products jumped last month.

durable goods rose 3.8%. that is the largest gain since july. record orders for boeing 737 and dream liner jets. retailers are hoping shoppers that don't like to battle crowds will appreciate extended hours. all toys r us stores are open continuously until 10:00 p.m. tomorrow night. and macies has 14 of its east coast and midwestern stores open around the clock. several of the west coast stores are open until midnight tonight. retailers say the extended hours are worth it because shoppers who feel rushed don't spend as much money. speaking of money. can you say millions of dollars? that would be the ultimate early christmas gift. how much is up for grabs in the mega millions lottery jackpot.

good morning, it's the holiday travel time. we have a live look at the terminal outside of san francisco international airport. it's the holiday travel rush here. there are a lot of lines as we have been reporting last night, this morning, throughout the day. likely to see a lot of people. get there early. we have another live report coming up soon. it was a wild bus ride in the east bay that left seven people injured. it all happened when a delta transit bus lost control, crashed through a fence. that all happened yesterday afternoon. one witness waiting for another bus told us what she saw. >> she started hitting the curb and knocked out a light. she had a full bus. she came this close to hitting our bus. the bus driver said to get off the bus. get off the bus fast. >> fire officials say a loot of the passengers on the bus were thrown around. they reported neck pain and dizziness and other injuries. an investigation is under way.

6:25. a very sad discovery. yesterday the bodies of two missing santa barbara men were found in a ravine. they were last seen sunday when they road off to test all terrain vehicles. recommending women with implants have their implants removed. officials say the implants are prone to rupture and leak a questionable type of silicone jell. none of the implants apore to be sold in the u.s. but thousands across europe and south america have thosism plants. city announced yesterday it's letting go 800 officers and 300 other administrative employees. veer cushion officials say the fired employs can reapply for their jobs but must pass a background check. they are trying to crack down

on corruption. in the meantime the mexican nay have will patrol that port city. police are looking for someone who stole packages at a post office. authorities say one pried open several parcel lockers and stole an undisclosed number of packages. there is a 10,000 reward being offered. instead of dreaming of a white christmas, a lot of lottery players are probably dreaming of a green one. green as in money. as in lots of it. tonight's mega millions jackpot has jumped to $173 million. the jackpot went up because no players matched all six numbers in tuesday's drawing. time now is 6:27. there were two shootings in less than a month. investigating now the latest attack at an east bay walmart. how the trails stretch from the stores apartment to the victim

clark. >> and i'm claudine wong. pam cook has the morning off. time now is 6:30. in the news for you right now overnight news a san leandro walmart there was a crime scene just hours ago reopen just a half hour ago. now as you look around there are no apparent signs that this was a scene of yet another holiday shooting. ktvu noelle walker is there at the store with the latest on what happened out there. good morning, noelle. >> reporter: born dave -- good morning, dave. yeah a lot of these people arrived this morning for early morning shopping. probably don't realize what happened here last night. this walmart has been the scene of two shooting. that one happened right after thanksgiving. if you go up toward the building about 30 yards up,s second one happened last night. that was right before christmas. the latest shooting happened at 10:30 last night. a man that was waiting for his wife to come out of walmart was

shot. police say as he drove home, the suspect then followed him and continued to shoot at him. the victim went by ambulance to the hospital where he is expected to recover. >> there was some sort of confrontation outside. the victim had some sort of argument. an argument with another individual that withdrew a firearm and shot him. >> reporter: on black friday surveillance video caught a shooting in the same parking lot. the victim in that shooting is out of the hospital and recovering at home. the suspect in that shooting surrounderred in front of our tv cameras after a standoff with police earlier this month. now back here live, i can see at least a dozen available surveillance cameras on the walmart building and around the parking lot. i've had a hard time believing the latest shooting wasn't caught on surveillance video. we do know the suspect is still at large. he may have been driving a gold

buick. reporting live in san leandro noelle walker. our time is 6:32. an attempted traffic stop by police in hayward ended with two people rushed to the hospital. now around 10:00 last night alameda county sheriffs deputies tried to pull over a small compact car. the driver refused to stop according to officials. and while attempting to get on to northbound 880 hit a freeway sign and a fence. the driver and the passenger inside were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. police say both will probably be arrested when they are released. a 49er fan says he was attack at monday nights game. the 66-year-old claims he was beaten up by ten men. we will tell you about the injuries he suffered at the hands of a steeler fan. the monday night game will always be remembered for two power outages and pg&e has sent a letter of apologies to the

49ers. they blame the first blackout on a wire splice. those splices are described as pieces of equipment connecting two overhead wires. pg&e has replaced the faulty splice and six others. there is no word what caused the second outage that night. san jose police have linked a gun at the center of a recent police shooting to the killing of a woman more than two months ago. last week a police officer shot and killed valena after police say he threatened them with a gun. investigators say the same gun was used to kill a san jose mother two months ago. valerie disappeared october 2nd. yesterday police arrested her husband in connection with her death. they are not saying what his relationship is to valena. 6:34. bay area airports are racing for a rush of teem trying to get to their destinations for the christmas holiday. allie rasmus is joining us live

from sfo with what the situation looks like this morning. it looks good out there. >> reporter: it does. if you are flying out of sfo this morning, the good news is you don't have to worry about any delays. typically when we are out here reporting this time of year. there is sometimes delays to tell you about. that is not the case out of sfo this morning. that is not the case nation- wide. the air traffic conditions and the weather conditions appear to be good. in fact, some of the flights on the board appear to be leaving a little bit early. that is unusual. let's show you the security line here at terminal two at sfo. it's fluctuated quite a bit. a half hour ago it was pretty packed. all those passengers look like they zipped right on through. now there is no wait at all. now despite what you are seeing here. today is supposed to be the busiest day of the holiday travel season. 134,000 air travelers coming

through sfo today. that is up 5% from a year ago. san francisco appears to be bucking the national trend at least when it comes to air travel. that is because most air parts nation-wide air travel is down about 10% from a year ago. here in the bay area there is still a lot of demand. especially for international travel. >> this year we had lawn. the lawn service improved. also we had expansion of service. virgin america starting new services this past week. so a lot of these carriers that exist are adding service out of san francisco. we are standing next to the check in counter at virgin america. this is one of several airlines that added flights this year. as you heard airport spokesman saying they think those new carriers are part of what is behind the increase in air travel here at sfo. 134,000 passengers expected to come through sfo today making

and the morning commute that traffic is moving along nicely. let's go to rosemary. did you say shoes? >> yes. air jordans. >> 40 minutes or so until our sunrise. we are waking up with partly cloudy skies. that is good news. it's helping to hold the temperatures steady. and hopefully we won't see anymore cooling between now and the sunrise. we have calm conditions. a big difference from yesterday. temperatures a huge difference with the calm, calm conditions. mostly clear skies for most of the night. that allowed our temperatures to really plumet. 23 degrees in napa. 26 in santa rosa. it was colder a little earlier this morning. the clouds helping out a little bit. 32 degrees in concord. freezing for you. areas right about benicia still dark. no sun just yet but hovering in the low 30s. livermore checking in at 29 degrees. san jose 33 right now.

36 degrees redwood city. areas along the peninsula and palo alto reporting mid to upper 20s. 37sfo. 31-degrees at the airport in oakland. 39 degrees in the city of oakland. but in any case it's a chilly one out there. we do have freeze warning for the north bay and east bay valleys. satellite radar the last hour or two we have watched high clouds sweep through. that is giving us a break when it comes to the sinking temperatures. we will continue dry today. the storm track staying to the north. we are looking at high pressure in place through your holiday weekend. while we are awfully cold this morning, our temperatures in the afternoon light slightly cooler than what we saw yesterday. not too bad. upper 50s to low 60s. 57 in the city. 59 san jose and dry. your extended forecast low 60s in the forecast for christmas eve as well as christmas day. we will be awfully cold once

good morning, to you. welcome back. here's a quick look at the top stories we are following for you right now. san leandro police investigating another shooting at the walmart store parking lot. reportedly the shooting victim got in an argument with a gunman and shot in the leg. he's expected to recover but that shooter got away and still on the loose. there was another shooting a few yards away at that same parking lot on black friday morning. in washington lawmakers are convening on capitol hill to approve the deal extending payroll tax cuts. the u.s. senate just approved that deal a couple minutes ago. the house now has to pass the extension before it can then be

sent to president obama for his signature. the extension is only for two months. the house republican group originally wanted a yearlong extension. today as you have heard many times is get away day for a lot of holiday travelers at sfo they are expecting today to be the busiest day with more than 134,000 people passing through. we have not heard of any delays. as always double check with our airlines. san francisco fire investigators say they will spend the day to figure out what sparked a five alarm fire. it all started yesterday. ktvu kraig debro is there now with what investigators are say examining that are -- are saying. they are set to arrive shortly. >> reporter: that is right. the purpose is to make sure there is no hot spots and flair up and the fire would reignite. investigators will be here at first light. they will be able to see

better. they will go to 1502 golden gate. the battalion chief calls that the fire building. you will see why. the battalion chief out here says will not say the origin was in this building. investigators will determine that. flames pushed by gusty winds quickly jumped to two other buildings. the fire was under control in three hours. despite the potential danger to three people. half the city's fire department responded to the call. the battalion chief out here this morning told me the layout of the city makes that necessary. >> the danger of working in san francisco because we have zero lot lines so the proximity of one building to another is so close. exposure issues of are real concern. we have not had one this big in eight years. a fifth alarm is absolutely unusual for us.

the dow is up 30 points today. the stocks opening higher today. setting the s & p for a fourth straight day of gains. 6:55. pedestrian was hit and killed in daly city by a car while crossing the street. it happened on highway 35 at hickey boulevard just before 6:00. the victim an unidentified 49- year-old man was in a crosswalk when he was hit by the car. he died there at the scene. the driver of the car was not cited but police impounded her car as part of the continuing investigation and investigators say it doesn't appear alcohol was involved. the first x factor champion has been crowned. last night 19-year-old melanie amaro was named the win ore after $-- winner of a $5 million contract. at one point during the
