where all the work is underway. merry christmas to you ally. >> we are inside the salvation army kitchen. as the head chef we talked to, he told us there was such a thing as smell-o-vision. you can smell it is christmas in here. they have candied yams and ham over here. and smells delicious. >> volunteers have been here since 5:00 a.m. preparing 5400 ready made christmas meals. so many of the items on the menu. they have green beans and slosh, a ham with a pineapple maple sauce and some of the candied yams we showed you as well. >> they are making 500 meals every half hour. >> they will go litter on in the morning to folks who can't make it to the dining halls and some of the other churches today. we are talking about elderly

folks and people who may have a physical disability and prevent them from going some place to get a christmas meal today. >> most rewarding part is when we get letters, we say thank you very much. if it wasn't for your program, we wouldn't have had a nice meal. and the other part of the story, we wouldn't have anyone knocking on the door wishing us a merry christmas. >> 5400 meals they are preparing. that is 400 more than last christmas, the need is there. and it is increased from a year ago. >> we move from the kitchen out into the loading area where you can sethe open in front of us and got about 50 to one you hundred boxes of the ready made meals already loaded in here. >> starting at 8:30. 9:00. >> a group of volunteers will be heading out and driving to the location to hand deliver the meals to people who need them this christmas. >> channel 2 news.

airs today at 5:30 p.m. they are searching for three gunman who -- gunmen who shot and killed a man overnight. three people standing on a sidewalk shot into a car that was passing by. the man who was shot was taken to the hospital where he died later. right now. police have not released a description of the gunman or motive. in reno, an american airlines plane is being inspected. it is bound for dallas and took off just after 7:30 last night. it forced the pilot to fly the plane back to reno, where they landed 25 minutes later. >> the 134 passengers on board were reeboked on other flights. a man is recovering from a life-saving surgery made possible by an oakland family dealing with a tragic loss. >> he was shot and killed while driving home from the store. butler had just graduated from

5:00 a.m. preparing 5400 christmas meals for people in need. and the food prep is the first part of the process. there are packed up, loaded on a truck and delivered the meals to people. the the recipient are the people who can't make it to a dining hall. and the elderly. this live alone. it is a great, rewarding for me personally to make sure that everybody has a nice meal. and wishing them a happy holiday or merry christmas today. >> people wonder where the money goes that they put into the kettles. this is one of the programs. it takes hundreds of volunteers and that is a yearly christmas morning tradition for them. take them back out here live. the truck loaded up with the

boxes and this is what is inside with the boxes. they have 21 individual meals in them. the first truck left to start deliveries about 15 minutes ago. we just got word. they have already loaded in. and starting to deliver 3,000 meals. they have 1400 left to go this morning. thousands of people are able to take part in the christmas tradition. right now. breakfast is underway and dozens of volunteers prepare for the dinners. one of the organizers told us its to make the clients feel they are with families on christmas. >> we are serving up ham, turkey. all the stuffing. gravy, dessert. all the good stuff that it everybody expects on a holiday. it as big meal. everybody is going to be nice and full. breakfast started an hour ago.
