throughout the bay area people are in the holiday spirit giving of themselves to help others. ken pritchett spent the day at saint anthony's. >> reporter: volunteer volunteer sherri haring always has a smile and has a lot to smile about. >> i used to be homeless when i first came here like for two and a half months. . >> reporter: that was ten years ago. she knows what the people here are going through. what a hot meal and kindness means to them. >> terrifying. it was terrifying nobody will let you go to the bathroom or get a drink and nobody cares. . >> reporter: her life has seen change and so has the tradition. they still feed thousands but now they hand out handcrafted scarves to 5,000 in need. >> we are see age few more families today and we expect our numbers to be slightly up again. >> reporter: depending on which organization you talk to

donations this year or either flat or like here, they have risen slightly. however the need has grown and out paced that giving. >> merry christmas. merry christmas. >> reporter: the founder says much more needs to be done. more help is needs in these hard times. >> we would like to say that we have seen a great increase in giving but we haven't. >> reporter: he said it has seen a 30% increase in need for all of its programs over the last two years, on this christmas day more than 5,000 meals will be served. the dinners will continue as will the need. long past the holidays. in san francisco, ken pritchett. >> the salvation army also spent the giving to those in need. they made meals for more than 5 people unable to leave their homes because of aids, sickness or disability. those meals were delivered to

their front doors. the volunteers sometimes the only visitors they get all christmas. >> thousands of needy children got a visit from some of santa's helpers today. today we rode along with one of the many groups who drove their trucks around the city to hand out toys. more than 10,000 toys were collected at the restaurant. the organizers of this toy drive say all children should have a chance to open gifts on christmas day. christmas is a day of celebrating community and family all over the world. >> importance of family is of course come home to prince phillip and me personally this year. >> reporter: the queen released her message today. it was recorded before her husband was in the hospital for surgery to clear a blocked artery. she reflected on the weddings of two of her grandchildren

their burned building. >> irelessed it was christmas eve and they would spend christmas without a christmas dinner. i decided to make them one. >> i can't say enough about glenn. she is great. i really appreciate her. >> reporter: the red cross is also helping out the group with homes at the holiday inn until wednesday. >> the holiday tradition of lighting up a fireplace has been banned in the bay area. it was the 10th spare the air day of the season. we are live in redwood where we talked to a family that found a unique way to get around it. >> reporter: here the fire wood is all cut and ready to go in this house. the family who lives here was hoping to wake up this morning and build themselves a nice fire on christmas morning but because of that no burn order, they had to take a more creative approach. it's a festive alternative to a traditional wood fire. instead of a yule log they have

a couple dozen glowing candles. >> just looks nice. it definitely makes the season -- christmas day. it's christmas and holidays and winter is all about sitting around the fire. >> reporter: janet and her family were disappointed to find out christmas was a no burn day in the bay area. they understand how important these spare the area alerts are. >> we want to respect people that do have problems with the smoke. >> reporter: for the 10th time this season the air quality management district has called for a no burn day. lisa said the cold, dry weather traps wood smoke pollution close to the ground. >> have you warm air above and cold air below and it creates this cap and we have had this condition almost all of december. just unfiltered air pollution going out and not only impacts your neighbors but also increases the air pollution inside your home. >> reporter: even on christmas

day dozens of air quality inspectors out drive around on the look out for anyone illegally burning wood in their fireplace. the unhealthy air can really hurt those with breathing problems which is something this family is mindful of. >> you want to have a roaring fire but some days you aren't allowed to so we put a few candles in just to give us a little bit of flame. >> reporter: wood burning violater dear sir be fined more than $400. there has not been a no burn notice issued for tomorrow but air quality inspectors still asking people to voluntaryly skip the wood burning fire until the air clears out. >> some are calling a christmas miracle that a 22- month-old boy is a live tonight after being thrown out a second story window by his mother. it happened this morning at a san jose apartment building.

police say the 24-year-old threw her baby out the window and then jumped out herself. witnesses say they landed on a small patch of dirt. thto live. investigators believe mental illness played a role. >> update on the story of hope we first told you about last night. a man is recovering from transplant surgery because of an oakland family that gave the gift of life. daniel murphy got a liver transplant from charles butler junior. he was shot and killed on thursday while driving home from the store. his family said he planned to be a merchant marine. murphy said that he is grateful to butler's family for the chance to watch his children, his grandchildren grow up. family members of a southern california soldier say he is in critical condition following a shooting at his

homecoming party. relatives of christopher sullivan say he was trying to brake up a fight between his brother and another man on friday. the man pulled a gun and shot sullivan in the back shattering his spine. sullivan was award the purple heart after surviving a suicide bombing in afghanistan. >> there is no holiday for the highway patrol. so far in santa clara they reports 243 people have been of ther arrested for driving under the influence since it started on december 16th. they say there have been no dui deaths so far but there have been two accidents linked to drinking and drives. >> excitement building right now in oakland. just about two hours from now the warriors will play their season opener and of course it's a season that almost didn't happen. jade hernandez live where fans are being welcomed back. >> reporter: the warriors play the clippers tonight.

. the pope prayed for peace in his yearly christmas day message today. the 84-year-old delivered the message to a packed crowd. he prayed for comfort for flood victims in thailand and in the philippines. once the numbers in the retail federation thinks holiday spends will be up about 4% from a year ago. even so not everybody keeps those holiday gifts.

you can see neighborhoods back down to the 40s. we aren't talking about any freeze warnings but a few neighborhoods will be back down in to the upper 20s over night. still a few subfreezing spots. for tonight fair skies on the cool side. tomorrow cool morning, dry forecast and the extended partly to mostly cloudy. we could track a few rain drops but only a chance and not expecting much. no significant rainfall at least on the long range weather maps. here we go tomorrow morning, up in sanity rosa and napa, same for fairfield. san jose at 36 and oakland in the upper 30s. high pressure in command of the weather basically for most of the month and it'll stay for tomorrow after that cool start, fair skies as we head in to the afternoon. here is the change as we head into tuesday this cold front will approach the pacific northwest. this will thicken up the high clouds in to tuesday, shower chances, will be mainly to the north. we do bring in the chance of a few sprinkles or maybe a few

light north bay showers for late tuesday lasting in to wednesday. only a possibility and the highest chance will be north of the golden gate bridge. hear we go with the forecast model. tomorrow morning may be a patch or two of cloud cover. most of the significant cloud cover. far as the forecast highs, most other areas into the 50s, tomorrow will be a little bit cooler than today at least with respect to the afternoon highs. that means san francisco mid50s. san jose tops out 56 degrees. santa cruz in the upper 50s around 57. here is a look ahead. the extended forecast and you can see a few changes here. quite a few clouds over the next few days with partly to mostly cloudy skies. tuesday night and into wednesday, not amounting to
